If so, do you know the answer to the following problem?

I was using an LCD 1280x1024@60hz with Ubuntu. I've now hooked up a CRT monitor to that PC and while I can change the resolution fine the only option is 60hz for refresh rate. I need to change it to 100hz.
I used to be able to do this by editing a file in Mandrake Linux but I don't see the same file in Ubuntu. What file do I need to edit to fix this?

Have you tried System->Preferences->Screen Resolution?

The file you need to edit is the same for all Linux distro. It's either /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XFree86.conf . It's usually the first nowadays.

Cheers

The preferences is where I went and all that is available to me is the 60hz I was using on my LCD.

XFree86conf is the first file I looked for and it's not there. I'll look into the other file you mention though, thx.

It's things like this that will just keep me coming back to Windows.

Ubuntu is weird. It sets itself up to be root. I'm used to using Mandrake as root or limited user where I never had any problems editing files. I edited the file as shown below by doing this: sudo gedit /etx/X11/xorg.conf
but I still can't select anything above 60hz under preferences. What gives? Anyone?

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 28-51
VertRefresh 43-100

Dig out the CRT manual and see what the min and max values are for Horizontal Sync and Vertical Sync, and set them in there.I think the HSync field is what's holding it back.

Be careful though. If the values are wrong the CRT may be damaged (newer ones are usually safe though).

Cheers

I think this may fall on deaf ears. The thread is 12 years old and the last time Gatticus posted was in 2007 and Mr B in 2012.
