CANADIAN HOCKEY 'LIVING LEGEND'
Howard William Meeker, C.M. (born November 4, 1923) player in the NHL, youth coach and educator in hockey and announcer as well as a former PC Member of Parliament. He was born in Kitchener and lives there today.
'Howie' is the last surviving member of the Toronto Maple Leafs 1947 Stanley Cup team, the Maple Leaf 1949 Stanley Cup team, the Maple Leaf 1951 Stanley Cup team, and the inaugural NHL All-Star Game.
He won the 1947 NHL Rookie of the Year - Calder Cup, and later ran a famous 'Hockey School' for years.
On January 8, 1947 he tied the NHL record for most goals by a rookie in one game with five goals against Chicago.
He was well respected for his keen insight and jovial attitude.
He was the first to say, "KEEP YOUR STICK ON THE ICE!".
On December 30, 2010, Howie was named a Member of the Order of Canada.
Still going strong at 96 years old!!
