Long balls make the game more exciting for most people and thus helps increase tv ratings and game attendance. MLB is a business after all!

It's the same reason why the NFL made rule changes to create higher scoring games and why NASCAR changed its points system to make the top drivers more competitive with each other towards the end of the season.
