The raised LCD display is very common these days, and I'm not sure why. I think that's how it looks in the BMW as well. Also, rumor is that it's power has been understated, and that it actually puts out more power than what they say.
As for old school, I have the digital dash in my Mustang, and I love it, so I guess I'm OK with something not being old school
