Just arrived back at the aerodrome at Lemmes in a camion after a sightseeing tour. Unfortunately, my machine is still languishing just our side of the lines near Verdun. I was out on a general observation of the lines, trying to determine where we were, and where they were. The first thing that drew my attention was the flashes of a terrific bombardment, and came down out of the clouds to find one of our forts getting pounded. A little further off, I saw a convoy moving along the road, and went to investigate. As I drew closer, shells erupted all along the road and on the convoy. And it was at that moment that I heard the unmistakable sounds of my aircraft being hit by small arms fire from the ground. I turned for the lines, but the damage had been done, and it was all I could do to make it to our side.

We will remember them.
