There's a progamme airing on the History Channel this Firday at 8 called the Christmas Truce, promising to shed some light on the events more than 90 years ago. I'll try to catch it and let you know what is to be learned from it.

Quite amazing, that the front fell silent during those hours. As you point out Roger, the men were quite happy to let the guns remain silent but the blooming generals ordered their poor soliders to resume fighting at gunpoint and under threat of courtmartial, if they did not obey orders.
