That's right - and about £15,000 per Spitfire during production. Every newspaper, boy's comic or annual of those days reminded us of that valuation - and how grateful the Minister of Aircraft Production was for that mountain of aluminium which was offered from the kitchens of the nation. Or so Home Front propaganda would have us believe.
