Was that place in Kent anywhere near Kenardington or Ashford? The DU-X you refer to was a mock-up which I photographed at Duxford nearly two years ago and one of the 'cannons' was damaged then. The original post-war gate guardian was Spitfire 16 SL542 which crashed at Duxford in '56 when landing and stood outside the control tower, painted pale blue, until 1961 at least. After being moved about a lot it went to the States many years ago. It is now reported that this aircraft is again currently on sale because the owner has been unable to complete the rebuild project.

So, let's have a whip round and raise £650,000 shall we?
