After the war (as an instrument fitter) my father worked for the gas board. He was a (junior) member of a committee deciding standardisation. They decided that all small screw threads should be in BA (British Association) incremented by even numbers eg 0BA, 2BA, 4BA, 6BA etc. Except the GPO (now British Telecom) who adopted only all the odd sizes.

And of course (and for very many years) the light bulbs on military installations, and even ordinary railway trains, were a different size bayonet fitting, although that was to stop pilfering.

There is progress in action, nobody thinks of nicking light bulbs now, although a surprising number of people still take all their bulbs when they move house leaving the incoming householder in the dark!
