Most of them would never have been able to endure the humiliation of returning alive so I don't know about that.

Perhaps they just sat around for days and days painting characters on their ceremonial head bands and waiting patiently to die a glorious death for their emperor? It could be that a large number were never called and thus never afforded the pleasure. The 'Divine Wind' was of course a threat that only came at the very end of the war.
