The world population grows apace as though all resources are infinite. Disasters that once claimed thousands now claim hundreds of thousands because there are far greater concentrations of people ready to be affected by any given disaster. As you have implied, nature produced a natural balance over millenia until it started to become eroded and polluted by the ascent of man and the modern industrial revolution in particular. 'Head for the hills' is an old Hollywood cliche but one which I feel will have an increasing relevance in the decades to come.
