Actually, it stood for Farman Experimental due to the fact that the aircraft looked like the Farman series of pusher-type aircraft.

It was also a P.O.S. airplane that couldn't hardly get out of it's own way. The Germans shot the he11 out of them to such an extent that they HAD to switch them over to night bombers.

They had a real bad habit of tossing the fuel tank and engine onto the crew in the event of any kind of crash landing, which usually ended up in killing them.
