Action Shooters

Battlefield

Battlefield 3 is my current favorite game, and I'm spending a lot of time with it. The recently released pre-order pack, Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand, is a great pack. A long time ago one of the members of the team mentioned that the Bad Company series was not over, but no further word on that. The Battlefield 3 DLC pack was recently released. Otherwise, EA seems to have let the current version die-out for this year. Let's hope I am wrong.

Call of Duty

Activision has confirmed another Call of Duty is in progress. No additional information is available at this time.

Carrier Command

This Sci Fi game is from Bohemia Interactive. From the web site: "Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is a breathtaking combination of action game with strategic elements set in a vast detailed archipelago. It reinvents the classic gameplay of the original Carrier Command to deliver a truly next-gen experience." Will this be a title BIS fans of Arma 2 can enjoy?

Counter Strike: Global Offense

The Counter Strike blog site reports that the CS:GO beta has been updated, and plans continue for the popular series latest edition to be released later in 2012.

Far Cry 3

Ubisoft says they learned a lot from their mistakes with Far Cry 2. Far Cry 3 takes us back to a tropical island, where it's survival of the fittest. Other than that and a screenshot or two, no further information. It is slated to be released by year-end 2012.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Scheduled for a late May release, GR:FS is the next installment in the brand. Although it looks to be more action-oriented than all the previous ones, I’m hoping for options. GR:AW 1 and 2 looked like arcade games but they came with options to turn off all the ridiculous settings, and hopefully GR:FS will do the same. Still, I'm looking forward to it. The single player will have a storyline like all the others. But I’m hoping for good multiplayer and good co-op multiplayer from this title.

Mass Effect 3

I’m not a Sci Fi gamer myself, but I played Mass Effect 2 (ME2) and thoroughly enjoyed the 3rd person shooter's storyline, good action, and battles. Mass Effect 3 (ME3) arrives March 6th. It looks to be fantastic — and it has co-op multiplayer included.

Medal of Honor 2

According to CVG, Medal of Honor 2 is set to be announced at the 2012 Game Developers Conference on March 6th. It is scheduled for release in October. Danger Close is the developer. The blog is here and a new update is here.

Sniper Elite 2

Sniper Elite was a damn good game that didn't catch on as it should have. I am kind of surprised they found the funds to come back with another one for 2012. Lets hope they can improve where it needs it, and yet still keep the great sniper feel in the gameplay.

Spec Ops: The Line

With a tag line of "It's been 6 months since Dubai was wiped off the map by a cataclysmic sandstorm..." this new shooter that shows some tactical elements takes a different route than the usual fare, and may be a sleeper. Due for release in June 2012, the Spec Ops: The Line web site here has several gameplay screenshots.

Other Action Shooters

There are about a dozen games coming out in 2012 that are effectively clones of the very successful Call of Duty series. Someone needs to use some imagination for fresh ideas and create a new genre of shooters. The Tactical Shooter is rare and dying, while the Action Shooters are just way too far out there, and too many. Everyone wants to be Call of Duty. Well, you can’t folks.
