I thought I'd start a short list of features to share with all of you (against my better judgement - you all know I need every edge I can get over you) which you may or may not be aware of. I decided this was worth starting when Shadow couldn't believe I hosed a MiG with the Blackhawk on NTC.

- Radar HELLFIRE doesn't need an active radar signal to fire on a stationary target in LOAL mode. In LOAL mode, all you need to be is within range and have a target selected on the TSD in order to hit the target. Naturally doesn't work on moving targets.

- DWO Apaches can use RF using the above method, simply track a target with TADS, switch to LOAL and fire. The missile will automatically track the target's last known position.

- CRTL+~ will access every flight's current target data and transmit it to your TSD. This is handy when a player can't send a PFZ to others and a threat needs to be dealt with. Using the RF LOAL method in conjunction with accessing target data is quite handy.

- You can padlock the Blackhawk's door guns by hitting F4 with a target selected. This makes the gun automatically track your current target in a linear fashion. All you have to do is pull the trigger!

- You can sneak up on front line tanks and be in their immediate presence without them attacking you. Doing this, you can line up in a perfect hover behind a tank and fire a 50-100 round burst into their rear end, quickly killing them in the process before they can react. This won't work on T-80s, but it's very effective on that Iranian T-55 copy. If you fired on them beforehand however, you won't have the advantage of suprise.

Anyone else got some features that may/may not be known?

- When you want to lock up a target infront of you with TADS and you are in FCR-mode, select the target first with FCR then switch to TADS when you have a visual on it (quicker than selecting targets with TADS which "scan" a much wider area).

- Always fly in a straight line when shooting the gun (even if the target is to your side. If you turn or pitch the helo in any direction while shooting, your CP/G will try and compensate but is not quick enough and you waste ammo.

- If you are unable to hover, disengage the wheelbrakes (B) before landing at your base to do a rolling landing.

Along the lines of using Radar HF in a Longbow(NR)

Usually, in order to send a PFZ, a chopper must have a radar. However, in a Longbow(NR) switching to the FCR mode (even though it reads INOP) allows you to send a PFZ to other flights (AND employ Radar HF in LOAL mode.)

Quote:

- If you are unable to hover, disengage the wheelbrakes (B) before landing at your base to do a rolling landing
Similarly, if you have a damaged engine and don't have enough power to lift off, releasing the wheel brakes (esp. on an incline) allows you to do a rolling TAKEOFF which may give you enough Translational Lift to get you in the air.

In fact you don't even need to go to GUNS view. Selecting a target from the cockpit and flying so it is to the side of the chopper within the fire zone of the guns allows you to just pull the trigger while in cockpit view and if the target is in constraints, you will hit it. Also - always take the Miniguns!!!!!!!!!!

- There is a padlock wingman command (SHIFT-F4, I think...) which will allow you to see where your wingie is. Very helpful in MP if you lose sight. The Padlock will slew your view so you can head toward that position. I don't think it functions if the wingman gets shot down and respawned.

- With some fancy keystroking, you can have the Radar operational while in TADS mode. This allows you to SEE additional threats on the Radar screen, while having the ability to to Full Screen TADS and detect and engage infantry that do not show up on radar. You cannot employ Radar(HF) in this mode, but it is very useful when carrying Laser(HF) on a Radar Longbow.

You can also "pump" the collective to keep rotor RPMs high without dragging them down in event of rotor damage or engine damage.

Good find! Didn't know they were automatic like the M230. Definately worth remembering.

Didn't know about this one either - that should make finding each other within a flight much easier.

I have actually done this before without even realizing it was some kind of trick lol.

on NTC maps if you fly under 20 or so ft (naturally it a wee bit difficult to keep it there on realistic flight) but strangely that SAM can't touch you (except shilka's or anything else with a gun) even if they got a full lock on

if you come in low enough you can fly right up to em they may fire but the missle will go above you by a good 10ft. kinda a exploit but still good fun.

also a usual...if you have a fire: if the engine is dead and on fire, let it burn out as long as you dont have a fuel leak it wont spread. if the engine is just damaged and on fire, shut it down. NEVER use the fire extinguisher unless YOU REALLY NEED IT (IE: your last engine is on fire, apu is on fire, or if you have a fuel leak and a fire). I think one time i had a engine fire and had to turn the engine on and off 10+ times but never used my extinguisher once...kinda amusing, course it was NMC when i got back

OK let me have a stab at it...

1. You can do auto rotation landing in LB2, nicely modelled

2. You can use a TrackIR in the 3D cpit, but its not very smooth. Good enough for navigation
but I wouldnt recommend it for close in combat.

3. You can hit stationary targets with the rockets, if youre airspeed is under 10kts absolute or relative. Some can, some cant.

4. You can create new missions with MissionPlus editor. But no one makes em like the Shadow...

5. Its far better to get soft kills with the laser than the radar. Also limit your gatling gun's
firing rate when selecting soft versus hard targets. Save the ammo for when you need it.

6. Multiplayer can be good enough to fly in close formation, but it works best when all players
use the SYNCH to monitor refresh in the DGVOODOO wrapper AND the monitor refresh rates are close to
the same (60 or 70 or whatever Hz). Otherwise when getting close each will see the other ship
wink out when within a couple of ship lengths away.

7. Make use of the artillery, airstrikes, and AI wingmen to complete objectives. Dont have to take
all the risk yourself in MP or Solo game play.

8. I like to fly low and slow and run silent in LB2. Shooting up targets that arent on the pri
or secondary list only wakes up the enemy and sends attack aircraft/helos your way. Save the
free hunt for the way home and youll be sure to have mission success and live longer too.

9. The FAC role of the Kiowa was never fully implemented with the PFZ setting of Kiowa to Apaches.
However, with voice comms the Kiowa can be a nimble and fun experience to fly along with the LBs.
The "willy petes" work fine and can add more realism for those willing to take risks like the real
hotshot FACs do.

10. Finally, have to say this...
If you havent flown online multiplayer with front/back or Pilot/CPG with two players together,
then IMHO you just havent experienced the best LB2 has to offer and still has as its unique feature.

That is all...

Unfortunately, calling in arty results in a huge barrage that nonetheless only takes out a single target (the on you had designated when you called in the strike). This can be a GOOD thing when taking out a SAM radar and defanging the site for a cannon attack.

When calling in the A-10 for a CAS strike, however, the Hog kicks a$$ and takes names!

Not sure if I already mentioned this, but calling in an airstrike on a friendly helo (e.g. wingman or someone you have to escort) results in an F16 flying constant air cover. Good as an extra layer of protection against enemy helo and fast movers, but dangerous if it exposes the F16 to SAM activity.

I've been given the nod (by a certain member of this community) about this topic becoming an article. What do you guys think? And where - at SimHQ or just my site?

Just bear in mind that my strategy guide includes a lot of these tips...

the single most important news to readers might be that LB2 survived the
broadband, multi-core technology and Vista migrations.

LB2 is still flyin and continues to be king with the unique shared MP cpit feature.

Not bad for late 1990's code.
