Is 64bit worth the effort/trouble?

Posted by: adlabs6
on: Today at 01:24 PM

I chose 32bit for my Windows 7 install. Wanting to run some older software, and a successful testing period with the RC were enough to satisfy me. The one main advantage I'd see with 64 bit, more RAM, I don't have and don't plan on with this build.

Happily, I as times change I can always use my 64 install media when needed. For those who don't know, my Windows 7 Upgrade Retail came with two DVDs in the box, one for 32 and 64 bit.

Dilemma

Posted by: BILL_
on: 11/19/09 01:47 PM

I buy 'built' computers. No 'brand loyalty', but I *am* familiar with HP's recovery DVD system, etc, so I just bought a new HP. All their upper level, *real* systems are 64 bit. I haven't had a single irregularity that I could pin on '64 bit'. I have had a couple times my Logitech mouse messed up, but that is IT. I am 'currently' running W7, as I am wringing it out, to know what I can of it before somebody I know buys a new computer and asks me questions. There are 'little' things about W7 that are awkward for me, and I expect in a while to go back to VISTA-64...which I both like, and never had problems with, except the mouse thing. I *suspect* I can cure that by using the HP corded optical mouse, but IT doesn't 'wheel' something I ALWAYS 'wheel'. Point of fact the best computer in the house is VISTA-32; runs PERFECTLY, all the time! ....But I can't buy a new, upper level, 32 bitter, etc...etc...etc.

Lots of blarney here, maybe some part of it will help you... I tried.

Posted by: RSColonel_131st
on: 11/18/09 02:36 AM

Well, the license won't be much cheaper than the DVD + License.

I'm not sure, technically it is possible to define on the DVD which keys work with that installation. So it's possible that an OEM key would not work with your Family-Pack DVD.

Your best bet is to buy an OEM license and media. Any particular reason why you want to use the DVD you already have?

Is it OK to use OEM Windows on your own PC? Don't ask Microsoft

Posted by: RSColonel_131st
on: 11/17/09 07:15 AM

BTW, the large German PC mag I get here at work - which is quite detailed and much better than the average mag you find at the store - has tested Win7 and states that the OEM is fine, it just doesn't include the two free Support Requests. Not even a mention of any legal hardware tie.

So, if even these editors got it wrong, how can MS expect the average customer to get it right?

What is the difference W7 32 and 64

That, and knowing which 32bit games are LargeAdressAware (able to use 3GB instead of 2GB) might help calculating the advantage of 64bit and how well 4GB RAM hold up.
