ROF minimizing itself?

Posted by: Laser
on: 11/19/09 06:17 AM

Perhaps not the Java itself, you need it from time to time - i'd just check if it tries to update itself and remove that option (e.g. from the registry 'Run' entry) or maybe from its applet in Control Panel. I *guess* that will solve it too without removing the updated java runtime.

Am I experiencing the same crippling stutters as other folks?

Posted by: Agent X20
on: 11/17/09 11:24 AM

I flew another mission last night, again without Fraps running, and had smooth frame rates and no stutters when the enemy flights appeared or in combat. There were only two enemy planes however so it wasn't the best test.

And sadly my ace N28 pilot died after colliding with an Albatross. I was gutted. Seems despite the problems this game HAS gotten its claws into me.

I did also re-enable reflections and shadows and that seemed to run ok as well.

Interestingly with FSAA enabled in the ATI control panel and not in game, RoF screenshots capture without FSAA which is bizarre. I'm gong to retry FSAA enabled in game rather than the ATI panel and see how it runs.

Still very promising overall but I'm not quite convinced it was 100% Fraps...

Settings question about POST EFFECTS

Posted by: VF-2 John Banks
on: 11/17/09 08:06 AM

Bloom really impacts the fps rate. I would recommend to use post saturation, as this setting drastically improves the way colors are displayed in the game. Without post saturation, it looks very cartoonish. I think the effect it has on your fps rate isn't really that high, if there is any effect at all.

The new system I plan to buy

Posted by: Copterdrvr
on: 11/14/09 07:51 AM

I'm running an Intel i7 2.66 ghz cpu with 6 gig of ram on an MSI X58Pro board. I have two, stock-speed ATI 4870's in CrossfireX. The monitor is a 22 inch LG LCD at 1680 X 1050. I'm running Vista 32 bit with all the updates. I'm also running TrackIR5 which is absolutely, 100% mandatory to achieve the visual "sense of flight" I'll talk about later.

I have everything cranked up to the max except for anti-aliasing, which is set to X4. The game remains fluid at all times, regardless of what is taking place or what I'm flying over. I'm constantly amazed at how "real" the sense of flying is in this game.

I'm a helicopter instructor pilot/check airman by profession and my flight training was courtesy of the United States Army. The first time I ran ROF, I spent about an hour just sight-seeing. In my wandering, I noticed some tree-lined rivers and decided I'd do some "swoopin' and poopin'" down the river like in the old military days. I was stunned at how realistic the whole experience was. When I looked out the side of the cockpit and saw the highly detailed terrain and watched the trees smoothly floating by, I was back in my O.D green helo again, flyin' through the treetops!

I've been flying helicopters for over 30 years and flight sims since before the days of the original Gunship. I've never had the sense of actual flight that this sim and hardware combination provides me.

The i7 cpu and the boards that support it are really being discounted now. The DDR3 memory is also very reasonable and the 4870 GPU's can be had for 150 bucks. I was an AMD fanboy for years (I tend to stick up for underdogs!) but and i7 quad core 2.66 gig chip for $290 is hard to beat and the charts show it beats the AMD chips pretty handily!

Copterdrvr

How to Load Skins in ROF?

Posted by: Bleddyn
on: 11/09/09 01:14 PM

I made a post on this for people asking on the RoF forum. Obviously the Skin Sharing Tool is the easiest way, but you end up with whatever others have decided to share on it. If you prefer to pick and choose, this is where you would manually install the files.

Current skin folder structure is;

For selectable planes:

Rise of Flight\data\graphics\skins

Skins are divided by plane within that folder. Folder names for each current plane are:

albatrosd3
albatrosd5
breguet14
dfwc5
fokkerd7
fokkerdr1
nieuport17
nieuport28
pfalzd3a
pfalzd12
se5a
sopcamel
sopdolphin
spad13

Simply place the skin (dds) file in the appropriate plane folder. You will have to create the plane folders if they do not already exist from a previous skin.

For default skins: (This is what will be on your plane at mission load, and also on your wingmen for single player missions.)

Rise of Flight\data\graphics\planes

Folders are the same as in "Skins" above, however, inside each of the skin folders you will need another folder named "textures". Additionally the skin you want as default must be named the same as the folder.

For example, the full path to a default skin for the N.17 must be:

Rise of Flight\data\graphics\planes\nieuport17\textures\nieuport17.dds

Hope that is clear and keep in mind, this may change with 1.009
