I might be proven wrong later but having just watched the episode you are referring to where Eli holds the gate open by sticking his arm through the event horizon I think it was pretty obvious from the ships reaction, shuddering etc., that this was a short term solution that would only work for a few seconds... a minute at most.

We finished SGU's 2 seasons. It was definitely getting much better in season 2 and it's a shame that it ended as it did. Would have been nice to seen more of the "descendants" of the Destiny crew that resulted from their 2000 year time travel into the past.

In addition, Don S. Davis died relatively recently. He played a great role on SG-1 as well and he was also on "Twin Peaks" and he made a couple of appearances on the X-Files as Scully's father.

Davis died around the time of SGA last season and was memorialized in the naming of the Dadelus class battlecruiser "USS George Hammond" in the series finale.
