When I listen to music, I like to give it equal or more attention than anything else going on. So with most video games, I won't listen to the music I like because I can't have it as a background. For instance, Sniper Elite 4 has nice background music which is not a distraction, but I could never replace it with jams I like because I prefer concentrating on the game. Doom is way to busy. But Cold Waters - now there is a game that has enough slow moments to fill with my favorite music. Sneaking to a spot to release your special forces group? Even with time compression it can be quite a wait, so I use my boat as "my own personal stereo set." I like to imagine that the Soviets have "Pavarotti coming out their a$$es!" Or in this case, anything from Duran Duran to Rush to Tchaikovsky.
Anyone else?
The issue is not p*ssy. The issue is monkey.

Can't agree more about Cold Waters, was only listening to some chilled synthwave last night while playing it. Excellent game also, putting more hours into that than anything else at the moment.......though that damn land strike mission, grrrr.

I do that as well. If I'm playing anything turn based like a Total War game or Ultimate General: Civil War, I will usually be listening to some music on my iPhone.

Agreed. Playing a lot of Factorio, and some Cold Waters, lately with my Marantz surround system providing background music.
I would play my own soundtrack when I got to points in Red Dead Redemption where I free roamed a lot. When I just wanted to get lost in that great map and "be there" I turned off the game's music(which for the game was excellent)and play my own. I grew up with Marty Robbins and others who sang real western music or songs of the old cowboys. Those great old songs which usually they or their melodies directly came from the old country and then working cowboys would adapt them to tell stories of their profession or day to day life and experiences. In particular, I loved listening to parts of the soundtrack to the movie "Jeremiah Johnson." A little different but very much in the same spirit and it was just such a great movie score. My favorite track to listen to would be this one as I rode horseback through the world. So peaceful and matches so well to the horse's slower gates. A great escape for me. Ah so good:
If its a creative sort of game or sandbox with not much story going on then I'll sometimes listen to other music maybe even play something on Pandora or on a YouTube playlist. For the Silent Hunter games I like getting one of those historical music and radio mods that adds tons of period appropriate music and radio broadcasts to listen to for those long steams across the ocean.

I don't normally listen to music while I'm gaming. However, I do have a Flight Sim playlist that I listen to away from my PC. These songs (MP3s), for one reason or another, remind me of flight sims or compels me to play them.
Included are game tracks from Falcon 4.0, Jane's F/A-18, Flanker 2.5, SFP1 (original Strike Fighters), EF2000, TFX, PSF (Project Stealth Fighter), F-19 and F-117...
I need to edit the excellent TFX tracks and credit them to Barry Leitch.

Still lurking about
I always liked playing Led Zepplin's Immigrant Song right when I was a few miles from target during a ground pounding mission in SF Wings over Vietnam. Also, Rise of the Valkyries.

Unreal Tournament (Game of the Year Edition) was addictive as hell. Can't believe how long ago that was.

Yeah, the last one I played was UT 2004. A friend and I would just play it in coop mode against AI bots.
