Yes, they should be speaking West Saxon, Kentish, Mercian and Northumbrian. And of course Danish, Frisian and Celtic. smile

Well, at least they've kept the names: Æthelflæd, Æthelred, Æthelwold. Also, like in the books, you'll get the Saxon names for towns (Eoforwic for York, Lundene for London) and settlements (which transform on-screen into their present-day names; in the books, Cornwell provides a glossary)

Why men throw their lives away attacking an armed Witcher... I'll never know. Something wrong with my face?

I prefer the Latin "Londinium" and "Eboracum". It sounds much catchier. smile

Not this Saxon, mate.

John of Snoddesbyri near Weorgoran ceaster.

As for films and progs. 'Empire of the Sun' is a worthy mention.

As previously mentioned 'Waterloo' for the unforgettable aerial shots of the assault on the squares. 'The Duellists' for the standard of combat set in the beautiful cinematography.

As for TV, nothing comes near 'Band of Brothers' before or since to my mind.

As for 'The Last Kingdom' it pales for me against 'Vikings' from Amazon, featuring many of the same historical names, though it does ire me in 'Vikings' that the female characters, considering the dire injuries they receive in battle and from their menfolk, and the harsh living conditions of the time, never seem to age in the 20-odd years so far depicted.
