OK, I'll probably do it, not that you stole my thunder or anything with your excellent AAR biggrin

Axe and I got a couple of hops in last night. He hosted a KTO Iron Fortress that we've been working on. We both managed to survive each mission, though in the second one I took way too long stooging around looking for targets.

I did apparently manage to collapse my front landing gear. So I got that going for me, which is nice...

Thanks for the flights Axe man.

Axe and I got in another mission last night, another interdiction with CEM. Somehow I was given credit for my kills, plus all of Axe's kills, and a medal haha. Thanks Axe, rather generous of you I must say biggrin

now hold on just a second!

Well it does imply that I'm in charge of kills and medals, so you better be nice. I have been found out.

It's amazing what a good ole set g and a couple of bools can do. I could prevent as well as award, now that I'm in the matrix. yep

Hey Axe, I'll have an Air Force Cross on the next hop if you please biggrin

I want to complete the set and that''s the one that's missing.

Actually I think I've worked out what it will take, a post by Ricunes many months ago got me thinking in a new direction and I think I have a good idea of what it will take, but I never frag missions like that so it remains ungotten.

I agree with that, the AFC should happen!

Here's what I do know with certainty:

1--lot of ground kills
2--lot of air kills
3--lot of sams and missiles trashed.
4--extra nice to Axe

that's it!!!!!!!

Good news, lemme know what I owe ya.

As for the medals, yes all of that (and more) is true, with a generous helping of number 4 no doubt. But there's clearly more to it. And the most mysterious for me is 'mission complexity'. I often wondered just what the hell does this mean.

When I was still new to BMS I was sort of wracking up the medals, plenty of air medals and DFCs. But even on missions where I killed a ton of crap I failed to get a sniff of a SIlver Star. Missions with 4 and 50 kills, DFC. Then one day Ricnunes made a post showing his shiny new Silver Star. Looking at the details I realized his kills weren't any more than I get on some missions. So what was the difference?

Mission complexity.

His mission featured many different flights in the package. Escort, SEAD, other strikers and probably support like jamming and so on. So I drew the conclusion that F4 sees the complexity as how many other planes or flights are on the mission.

So I set about making one myself. And I got a Silver Star. The other flights did nothing as I recall. Just having them fragged gave points for complexity, as I see it, and the higher decoration was the result. Thing is I rarely frag missions like this. I do want an AFC though, so I keep thinking about doing it, just never actually do.

I agree, it's got to be based on the smaller, more difficult aspects to ascertain.

The code is simply amazing in this regard.

Seriously, I have thought that bringing home a damaged jet is a contributor, as odd as that may sound.
(I believe I did that for mine.)

Also, but not my damage this time:

Do you recall a while back I brought a damaged AI back home. He had no navigation and I went to get him in enemy territory. When he saw me visual he followed me home.
As I was going to him he was flying in circles for the 40 or so miles I had to go back to get him. He was low and smoking. Once there WVR, he got a tally on me, immediately turned to me, I saw that and turned home, and he followed.
We got home, going slow and low over enemy territory. Crazy. I had chill bumps and shut it down for the night.

Weird stuff like that.

Otherwise I don't know what it really is.

I forgot luck too. Not luck like lucky shot, or lucky the sam missed, but luck on the correct arrangements to get the medal. I'm thinkin that even if set up for that specified goal, being as the campaign

is dynamic, it'd take a good deal of luck for the right stars to align to make it possible.

That is probably THE most important and impossible to predict ingredient.

Maybe it goes by a combination of record.. Get a couple of frats and you might never see one? Achieve a critical victory in a given area?

I've seen that Jason, and I believe it to be correct. The question is though, what scores points?

My unofficial list

-- challenge rating (modifier)
-- realism percentage (modifier)
-- air kills
-- ground kills
-- hit percentage
-- type (value) of targets destroyed
-- enemy fire evaded
-- mission complexity
-- landing
-- survival (including wingmen)

Now, Axe makes a good point about damage. I hadn't considered this. Quite frankly, I am overly concerned with survival and often punch out at the first sign of a hit. Shameful. But perhaps if I tried to land a few more....

Wharfrat, I cannot say you are wrong, but my understanding is that medals are awarded based on the merits of each mission in isolation, campaign and longevity medals aside.

Yeah, I would not have bet on it either, but it has proven to be a very complex program, even in the early days.
Landing a damaged plane? Maybe it gets you some points towards a medal, but I bet the crew chief might have a few suggestions about how to present it to you ! wink

I don't think the points, well, feels right. I have seen a utility or something where you can read your promotion points. But I have never seen any way to know your Medal points. It just don't feel right to me. Not in the cumulative way that promotions are awarded.

I could understand if points were for a single mission, but not for adding up on your logbook over time. Have you guys ever seen your Medal point total anywhere?

No, but the overwhelming majority of my Falcon time was in AF. I could manage the campaign fairly well and got pretty good and hitting some targets and bringing the plane home. remembered seeing some points chart at one time, but would have to get back into that to see it again to say much more

The link seems to make a distinction between mission points and metal points. Am I getting it wrong.

I used to have a logbook reader, as I suspect most did, but cannot recall at what stage. I'm thinking around SP4 era? It wasn't the editor, but just a reader IIRC.

And yes, last mission points are displayed in the BMS logbook. Mission points and medal points seem to be one in the same.

However, we also have a score, and that is what is used for promotion and I believe also pilot rating..

You guys already know this, just clarifying.

Actually I have to be wrong. No way mission points are medal points. Last mission points never says 4000 or higher and I have plenty of medals. So assuming the link Schnidrman provided earlier is accurate, then 'last mission points' cannot be the same as those used for medals (medal points).

And.. which is different from score.

Clear as mud.

LOL and so that sprouted an idea that medal points are mission points times score.

Because mission points of 2000+ are attainable and a score of 4, say times 2500, equals 10,000 equals Air Force Cross.

Soooooo, assuming for a moment it works something like this, the question will distill down to what factors contribute points to the mission points?
