My dad just got one so that meant I got to set it up. It is nice. I recently broke my regular Kindle so I was without some kind of portable e-reader for over a month - now I can use the Kindle app. This reminds me that I saw a comparison review between the Fire and iPads - the reviewer considered the Kindle's plastic case as a negative compared to iPad's metal case. What he must not have considered is the extra weight that iPads have which makes them not as purpose-oriented toward being an e-reader like the Kindle. If I still had my Kindle I'd much rather use it to read in bed than the iPad.

If your talking Netbook then no it cant do much more. I have yet to see a laptop with ssd that can do what an iPad can do. Namely, convenience for size, usability and reliability. If I want to open up a book while sitting out side I can. If I want to pull up sports stats while watching the game, super easy with the Apps. Why would I want to drag out a laptop that produces more heat on my lap then my furnace does.

I loved my Etch-o-sketch when I was a kid. Hmm might have to see if I can find one now.

Yes and you are the target audience for Apple - its an easy to use locked down Fisher Price PC - but Skatezilla is probably a technical user - and therefore is right in saying you cant do jack **** with an iPad in that regards. With a Netbook you can still install a real OS and use your current programs, experiment here and there and do everything you need to.

I've had my iPod Classic for almost 4 years now so I've avoided the dreaded cycle of doom so far.

Actually I am a technical user as well. Your comparing two different subsets of electronic devices. Comparing a laptop to an ipad is like comparing a desktop pc to a laptop. The desktop is bigger, badder and you can change out components alot easier then a laptop. And I find it funny that you call the ipad a locked down fisher price PC. Its not a PC. Its a tablet for viewing multimedia applications on. I am not the one that started the comparison, I am just showing the fallacy in such an argument. Until you own a tablet, you have no idea of what your missing out on as many have attested to.

I have an iPad and an iPhone - and I'm not convinced you understood what Skate was getting at - a Netbook is pretty much a scaled down Laptop - you can install any OS (Operating System) on it.

Both iPad and iPhone run an OS called iOS - to me its a pocket PC running a cut down version of Darwin - and no its not just for running Multimedia apps on it - I use my iphone for basic port scanning, RDP, VNC - theres a lot of apps out there - but its still limited and locked down compared to Win/Lin/OSx

I'm HOPEFULLY about three weeks from getting a new New iPad for 200.00 (can't see $500.00 but for that price I'm in!), and I'm stoked if it happens. I was never an Apple fan at all until I got my iPhone and now, even though its just a 3GS I'm a convert. Also getting the new phone in whatever form it takes.. My brother and his wife have one and it's awesome. I'd still use my PC for strafing T-72s and my laptop for storing and posting vacation pics to forums but for general web browsing nothing beats the instant on of my phone combined with the (near) size of a laptop screen.
