Remember, too, Sakai was part of the Tainan AG (considered by themselves and others to be the elite fighter force of the already elite IJNAF); moreover they were purposely doing everything possible to save weight so as to extend the range of their Zero's beyond their normal capability (hence also pulling the radios out). IJA pilots did not usually have the same level of esprit de corps or fanaticism as was attributed to IJN flyers
