I have CD and I want to get back to playing this when new version comes out. I get windows errors when I see the options screen. Should I just delete and start fresh install and patch up? What is the correct patch order and where to download? old_simmer

This is for BOBII. The old Rowan BOB will not work with our updated software.

Here is the install procedure that I recommend (Hopefully then, you will have the same install on your PC that I have on my PC):

Each Step is Important (Note- do not worry about the MultiSkin for now as you can install it later). The 2.11 update is free at the A2A web site on the BOBII General forum.

1. download and unpack the 2.11 self installer or re-download the 2.11 just in case you had a corrupted download the first time
2. Uninstall old version or BoBII
3. Delete all files from the BoBII folder (leave none). [IMPORTANT: These old files left by the uninstaller can cause issues with the new EXE.]
4. Run a registry cleaner (like CC cleaner - a free program) as you had an old install of BobII (Important to cleanup)
5. Reinstall BoBII game CD or Download version that you purchased
6. Run (execute) the 2.11 Update that you downloaded

Re-do the following Windows 7/Vista fix as you had a new install:

Right click on shortcut and go to properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Check "disable desktop composition" and check the privilege level, run this program as an administrator.

Try a few Instant Action Missions. When you want to run a Campaign then start a new campaign.

I tried complete uninstall and reinstall as instructed and I get the same promt " Microsoft window Battle of Britain English Text has stopped working and problem has caused program to stop working. Windows will close and attempt to solve problem" which it never does. Well I'll try again later. Thanks for the help.

A few questions: How long ago did you have this running before?
Do you know what version you have, prior to patching?
- Check in the bottom of the opening screen.
If it has been several years, you will probably need the
newest d3dx9_nn.dll file, which means updating your DirectX 9.1c (or is it 9.0c?
I've forgotten) to the latest version (there have been about 25 versions of DX 9.?c)
I have d3dx9_24.dll through to d3dx9_43.dll in the \windows\system32\ folder.

At which screen exactly do you see the failure message?

You might give me you PC specs and look for a file called crashlog.txt in the BOBII folder and cut and paste the first 20 lines of the last file in this thread.

Also give me what is printed on your CD.

Thanks. It's running now. The sky seems striated and clouds not well defined. Any hints on graffics settings?

Sorry to chime in so late, JK...I'm still fairly new to Bob.
I've run the whole gambit on my system with removing & re-installing Bob..
I can tell ya that I've found the simplest way is to just open your explorer and delete your Battle of Britain folder altogether. Then, as mentioned above, run a registry cleaner.
But here's the trick-
Whatever reg cleaner you favor, use an option to 'look' for anything in the registry containing the word "britain".....
I use JV16 powertools. It's alittle old...(2005), but when I tell it to only look for key entries containing 'Britain' , it takes about 30 seconds to reveal all the references. Then you simply highlight all of the finds and delete them.
So now, we've deleted the BoB folder...and we've removed registry references.
Now when you load BoB straight from disk (install)...you'll know when it took correctly.
The first thing you see is a small reference to the fact that BoB will configure a 'default' setting for your joystick. This is the signal that will tell you your BoB installation was clean & successful.
I've done this I'd bet 30 times....exploring the different patches and how they perform.
And if you merely use the 'uninstall' feature from within Windows or BoB....there is a large trail left behind, as mentioned above that will absolutely ruin any further attempts to load BoB from scratch.

Hope this helps...
About the graphics now-
Its best to set everything down to no more than 'Medium'...
And set your Anisotropic to either 4 or 8....start off at 4.
I have an older sytem so I can tell ya how I work w/Bob for fluid fps and respectable graphics.
I've found on my little vcard that 4x anti-aliasing will do just fine. If you have an option for multi-sample...use that.
Be sure to look for the video card's reference to anisotropic. Select the option that allows the application to handle these tasks...less work for the video card and BoB handles the rest pretty good.
Mirror on/off...I've found that I really don't use the mirror so I don't employ it. A few tracers flying past my view tells me to jink and start looking around.
Advanced settings in BoB will reveal a hi-def landscape. Un-check that box for starters.

First, BOBII requires a screen print size of 96. If you have change your DPI to a higher number (example 120 DPI or medium) then BOBII will crash to disk on a Menu Screen. To change your DPI to 96 in windows7 in desktop right click. Select screen Resolution and at the bottom click on "Make Text or Other Items larger or smaller". Then select smaller 100% (default).

Second, I assume you are running the 2.11 Update as you did a install and I see you are running Vista.

Below are the 2.11 release notes:

Note1: this update will bring *any* previous version up to 2.11. You do not need any previous patches at all.

Note2: You will need the latest DirectX to run 2.11.
You will get a missing .dll error if you do not. When you run the 2.11 self-installer it will point you to the Microsoft DirectX update page. Update to DirectX9.0c (June version). Unfortunately, there are multiple versions of 9.0c so if in any doubt, update.

Note3: The MultiSkin patch should go ON TOP OF Battle of Britain 2: Wings of Victory v2.11 Patch (English) OR Battle of Britain 2: Wings of Victory v2.11 Patch (International)
You should have a 256M gfx card to be sure to run without issues.

Note4: How to back up your existing settings from earlier BoBII updates.
Buddye's installation guide HERE-> http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/vie ... 0&t=19368B
Back up your Bdg.txt and \savegame, \2dGauge, and \keyboard folders (these folders contain all your settings and joystick buttons)

Note5: If you have a low end system and experience a crash once into 3D, go to your bdg.txt file and set LANDSCAPE_TEXTURE_SIZE = 1024 (the default is 2048). This will reduce the landscape texture resolution by a factor of 4 and should help users with low system memory.

Note6: Windows Vista and Window 7 users. All Vista and Windows 7 users will need to apply the 'Vista/Windows 7 fix' to your desktop shortcut as a fresh 2.11 install will overwrite the previous shortcut.
Right click on shortcut and go to properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Check "disable desktop composition" and check the privilege level, run this program as an administrator.

Note7: Forcing VSync with ATI card
There is a known issue with the latest ATI cards and VSync. See http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/vie ... 10&t=21660
In short, you need to right click your ATI tray icon and enable through that (Wait for vertical refresh->Always on).

Note8: Framerates over densely populated areas of 3D objects
See the section later in this thread. Object rendering is not as efficient as we hope to make it in the future. Be prepared to check your Ground Object Density settings in densely populated urban areas. See below

Did you implement Note #6 (Imporant)?

Third, is you DirectX 9c update to the latest? If unsure run the Microsoft Web installer here(it will update only what is needed):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en

Fourth, if you are running a wide screen monitor check this thread and implement:

http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12695
