The scifi writers never took the slow mass and resistance to change, of government and people into account in their 'predictions'.

Although it is said that Jules Verne's account of future-Paris, from an unpublished manuscript found in his safe, was scarily accurate.

For years there were predictions that computers and automation would increase productivity so much, that we'd all be able to work 20 hour work weeks and live in splendor. Our biggest problem was supposed to be how we'd fill all that free time.

Well, productivity did skyrocket, but the typical worker saw almost no benefit in lifestyle or wages.

Flying cars for the masses would be such a nightmare. The masses can barely control a car on the road effectively so I don't see putting the same people who can't drive a car well in the air would be safe in any way. That and thousands of flying cars blocking out the sky in the cities would be another drawback.
