Hey folks,

I intend to buy some hardware so that I can play ROF on something else than my Laptop....Currently, I play in 1920x1024 on my 42" plasma, with shadows, reflections, textures high, trees and grass low, no post effects, no AA, no Vertical Sync.

I can get, when i'm alone or 1 vs 1, around 23 FPS....Never more.

And i can't play campaign mode, because with all the things happening on the ground level, plus the AI planes in the sky, i encounter an unsolvable lag/stuttering problem...

So i decided to buy a reasonably priced rig. Keep in mind that i don't won't to take part to the "highest FPS possible contest". I just want RoF to be stable with 30 FPS plus when there are 20 AI planes in the sky.

So here is what i intend to buy:

PHENOM X4 9650 - Quad Core - 2.3 Ghz - Socket AM2+
Radeon HD 4870 Vapor X (1Go memory)

Do you think I can achieve what I want? smile

Thanks!

Look at my specs. That and even higher will give you an almost "carefree" system.

Sounds good Arrow, but If you are an AMD/ATI fan, then go for the future, so get a AM3 socket and a decent DirectX11 card like a HD58XX series, As for the future RoF will be directX11 game.

Check also the PC systems around a Intel i7 or i5 series, prices are lowered.

For the OS forget the cheap Vista deals on that and go for Win7.

I'm running an Intel i7 2.66 ghz cpu with 6 gig of ram on an MSI X58Pro board. I have two, stock-speed ATI 4870's in CrossfireX. The monitor is a 22 inch LG LCD at 1680 X 1050. I'm running Vista 32 bit with all the updates. I'm also running TrackIR5 which is absolutely, 100% mandatory to achieve the visual "sense of flight" I'll talk about later.

I have everything cranked up to the max except for anti-aliasing, which is set to X4. The game remains fluid at all times, regardless of what is taking place or what I'm flying over. I'm constantly amazed at how "real" the sense of flying is in this game.

I'm a helicopter instructor pilot/check airman by profession and my flight training was courtesy of the United States Army. The first time I ran ROF, I spent about an hour just sight-seeing. In my wandering, I noticed some tree-lined rivers and decided I'd do some "swoopin' and poopin'" down the river like in the old military days. I was stunned at how realistic the whole experience was. When I looked out the side of the cockpit and saw the highly detailed terrain and watched the trees smoothly floating by, I was back in my O.D green helo again, flyin' through the treetops! copter

I've been flying helicopters for over 30 years and flight sims since before the days of the original Gunship. I've never had the sense of actual flight that this sim and hardware combination provides me.

The i7 cpu and the boards that support it are really being discounted now. The DDR3 memory is also very reasonable and the 4870 GPU's can be had for 150 bucks. I was an AMD fanboy for years (I tend to stick up for underdogs!) but and i7 quad core 2.66 gig chip for $290 is hard to beat and the charts show it beats the AMD chips pretty handily!
