OK, maybe that is what I set up. Go into OPTIONS in game and the key up. You can pick whatever you want but I have found that doesn't conflict with anything.
The story behind this goes like this. My wingman and I had engaged a group of Mig-17's in our F-86K's. Two Migs bugged out and I got the trailer of a second pair with an AIM-9B when I saw the leader extending away to escape and I went after him on a tail chase. I misjudged my overtake though and missed with my cannon bust. I attempted to snap roll to the right over and away from the Mig but felt an impact. I thought I was going down but I was able to level the wings and checked the outside view but saw no damage. The Saber was still flying perfectly. Then I remembered the Mig and saw this. I guess the F-86's right wing is stronger than the Mig-17's right wing and stabilizer.
Great Skin Ant! Would be cool to have that bird in Luftwaffe colors. During my military duty, the German 707 often came to Airbase Hopsten (where i was stationed) and trained toch & Go´s.

That decoy cockpit is more affective than I thought - even though I saw the missiles and knew that was its belly - for some reason I looked at the front and for a second thought it was banking towards me - doh!
If you are referring to me, that a add on terrain I made for the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR) using the SFP2 Engine and Euro tileset with upgrades.
Some Strike Fighters 2 (Israel, Europe and Vietnam) All Merged, Windows XP SP3/DX9, Mirage Factory F-14 Package, HDR Mod (i think i left it off in these shots)
The F/A-18 was made for SFP1 but I think they have upgraded it to SFP2. I just upgraded it on my own. The skin is my skin that I made a long time ago and just work away on. You can find other skins available for it at Combatace by others.
If you are looking for another F-18 simulator...check this one out.
just some examples of Strikefighters 2 europe with december additions. Note flown on a Asus G73J laptop with HD5870 graphics card. In HD , smooth as silk.
I'm doing fine in ground attack (especially with the Hunters) but my dogfights always seem to end like this:
I made it all the way back to the airfield with that second one, but with no way to shut down an individual engine, the fire got too big and I blew up on finals!
It's my own terrain but with I think either Polaks or Gepards tiles and I'm favoring the latter for some reason. It covers from Damascus to Beirut, the Bekkaa Valley, Ramat David, Tel Aviv and a city where that target above is located. Plus a couple of terrorist camps and some mountain top radar stations.
No Sony, one of your own pics......geeze...do I have to get the German to launch choco bombs at you?
I don't know why but I have always hard a hardtime to except those tanks on the airframe (I think it was fueltanks but I could be wrong) on the F-16. I think they destroy F-16 fine lines.
Capun has his released which is the Alphasim MSFS freeware conversion version. It uses the Vigilant cockpit and needs some touchups but it works. The other Bucc by Ravenclaw will be out sometime with a Bucc pit.
Very nice, Damson! But you have some distracting "jaggies." Maybe turn up anti-aliasing or higher rez?
Thanks Plainsman. I can't use higher resolution than 1440x900 as this is my native screen res (I assume you viewed the pics by right-clicking on them and select View Image - in Firefox it works don't know about other browsers). I don't use anti-aliasing because from the distance I'm sitting in front of my screen I wouldn't notice any difference
@Digger52 - what are your PC specs? I have downloaded the high res update for Germany in SF2E, but it is causing really bad slowdown! Incidentally, my specs aren't wholly accurate: I've only got 3gb right now, but I have a couple of shiny new 2gb RAM sticks heading my way as we speak - Corsair. Will another gigabyte of RAM make much difference - especially given that the new RAM is faster and a better make than the old?
Specs are - operating system vista 32 bit 2 year old quad core intel running at stock speed, 2.83 mHz 4 gig of ram video card ( probably the key to good performance) - 480Gtx with latest drivers
Funny thing is that WOE runs very slow, however the Strikefighters 2 series ( I have them all) run fantastically, obviously TK optimised for DX10 and for Vista/ Windows 7
Thanks for the reply. Hopefully the new faster (and extra 1 gb) RAM will make a bit of a difference. I've seen major differences with certain games before when upgrading nothing but the RAM.

The RAM arrived today and the Windows Experience Index (for what it's worth), has my system running at 7.2 in all areas apart from the HDD, so according to that at least, it's made a huge difference.
Naw, unfortunately the F-14 game will take place in late 70s or early 80s. TK has stated that he will not take on avionics any more modern than that. Though, I would like to see carriers with more detail like that for the new game. I keep dreaming that he's gonna sneak the F/A-18A in there, and make it a 1984 campaign, but I doubt it.

There is much to cover between 1950 and 1982
so why bother with something like lomac when we already have lomac/DCS?
i'd wish better 60's/70's avionics (which is already very varied and interesting) implementation (which already begun with the RWR moddeling, but things like DIANE for the a-6 or multitargeting for the f-14 system are awaited i think)
Nice screens soulfreak, especially those ones from portuguese air force, touched my heart I used to watch them flying near my home once i have a military airfield 15 miles away from my home. I think that in the late 80's beginning of 90's they still were the main fighter plane in service here in portugal. A beautiful plane imho. Nice work again
Thanks. We had a big slowdown due to our members traveling, new jobs, new house (big impact ) and other life problems. The pit is framed up, both seats and its slowly coming along. Exterior model is basically done for the Mk3-Mk5 / 5D. Only a couple of skins but we got some good refs in color so should be able to get some new SQN colors up. Its too bad that TKs engine wont allow for shotgun air to air rockets.
Yes the CF-105 AVRO Arrow. Why it went away is still being debated in many circles. Exterior model is done for the Mk I but that is about it. Some paint jobs and decals. We have a Arrow fanatic with us waiting for the Mk II with the weapons bay.
racing, this is the SF2Third Wirescreenshot thread, not the Falcon 4 one. :p
Fixed it for you, my screens are from WOV, the original version.
Fixed it for you, he wrote racing (shortened version of mlracing), not Dogsbd
I wasn’t replying on behalf of mlracing, I was responding to the erroneous notion that this screenshots thread was for “SF2” rather than all Third Wire sims.
@ SkateZilla: Can´t wait for your Carrier! Really nice. Btw, will you make an earlier version too? f.e. late 80s - early 90s? With some more different ACs?
So while doing some web browsing on RCAF aircraft, I found the Lancaster again with the Ryan FireBee drones on them. This is of course a different Firebee than what we have in game. We have a BQM-34 FireBee. The model is supposed to be about 22 ft in length. Should fit on a Lancaster. Switch it from aircraft config to weapon config and some fiddling to get it into position on the Lancaster.
Here is the result. Never though about the Firebee being the wrong size after shooting them down many times in the distance.
erm, what part of "THIRD WIRE SCREENSHOTS" is hard to understand?
Quit spamming us with the F-16 Sim Spam. We dont care about wing flex, or Fake VTOL F-16s, or Random Wing Wiggle/Oscillation, F-16s Doing Carrier Ops or Cockpit Buffeting or "Head Movement".

I think a head movement/buffeting mod would be great and add to the immersion factor. Wing flex etc., not so much, but to each his/her own...
But yeah, post it in the regular forum, not screenshots.
At the center of the image the second F-15 can be seen firing probably a sparrow. where did you get the boost effect?
I think that's the effect from the Unified Effects pack, that can be downloaded from CombatAce. I have that effect pack installed and also have that effect working, so I guess it's from the Unified Effects Pack.
Really nice shots arthur. Is the F-16 a model from SF2 Israel with different skin or entire new plane?
Thanks! It's the Netz from SF2:I . If you have Pfunk's F-16A Blk10 installed, you can just drop the skins into the Netz folder and they work. In my SF2:E install, I just changed the name of the plane in it's .INI file so it says "Falcon" instead of "Netz". His F-16 hasn't been updated to the latest patch, so I use stock TW to avoid any weirdness whenever possible. I'm a little bit OCD :P
Carlo, its a mix of Brian's tiles, Stary's TOD's and trees, with a couple of TOD's replaced with some from Baltika's UK terrain, that way I could get trees closer to the airfields too.
You should try to post your comments with screenshots so the place stays on track.
I don't think he will ever release anything cause if the game is TK's, and I believe that it is, then what he is doing would take lots of modifications that aren't sanctioned....if you know what I mean.

Tez sie zdziwilem. Pewnie to sprawka Pureblue bo to jego Anatolia...
Kodiak, wow! I had no idea how great TK modders had become since I last played SF1 more than 8 years ago. Again, fantastic looking planes and what scenery are you using? Also, I'm assuming all of these great looking models can be found at Combatace.com?
Everything you see on my screenshots is available at Combatace (if I am not mistaken). The terrain you see in most of my screens is the Taiwan terrain, one of my favorites. The desert terrain in some screens is the stock SF2 one with high res textures, also available at Combatace.
What graphic mods do you use? (Lighting, Clouds, Sky, etc)
Your shots look really good.
SD
Main graphic mods are: -Postprocess shader tweaks by Stary (very slight vignette and blue tint) -ENVIRONMENTSYSTEM.ini (clouds) & VIEWLIST.ini from one of the big mod (NATO FIGHTERS 4+ or SF2I 48-56 Mod - i don't remember) modified by me I also recommend Unified Effects Pack by Stary.
+ Anatolia v2 by Pureblue with Stary tiles - one of the most beautifull terrain.
Sorry SkateZilla but i disagree. There are few mods from Insky on CA like: Xian JH-7A, Chengdu J-10A, Tu-22M3 BackFire C, J-20A Lurking Dragon, Improved rain effect V1.2 and not stand alone like Su-35 or Su-30 in Spectre8750 mods like Modern Warfare: Korea, Taiwan; and more...
And now a distraction from NA. Those Tomcats look beautiful, but not my cup o' tea, I have to say... I fired up SF2 after a year or so...from my involvement with the Falklands 82 Mod. Having a blast with the Scandinavian Front Campaigns Mod! Killing a nimble fighter with non guided rockets can be so much fun! Started some historically accurate pilot skins too...
For those interested, check out for the TSF Campaigns, for SF2E at Combat Ace:
Wow, does it work properly? And one more question, what environmental mod are you using? (clouds and stuff) I've been missing such cloud coverage, long time now...
The clouds are Sarcasm v1.2 but I have replaced the STR_CLOUDS3.TGA from that mod with one of my own because the one in sarcasm 1.2 makes the clouds look more darker and gave me the feeling flying in rainclouds all the time. (If you want that STR_CLOUDS3.TGA pm me) Now they are more white and I think better looking, but that is just my own humble opinion Terrain in the Yak-41 shots is the default desert with the high resolution textures. That is all for enviroment mods. All can be found at combatAce website.
The Yak-41 is from SF1 and I just installed it into SF2, did not yet test it properly, flies okay, like it did in SF1, but the vertical take off I did not yet test, like I said.

Thanks, Kodiak! I had tried SARCASM 1.2 but, I didn't like it's colours of the sky... In addition with the darker clouds it adds, the background looked kind of cartoonish to my eyes... So I uninstalled it...
Not really interested in the Yak, was just curious if the Vertical take of was modelled...
I haven't got NA yet but TK must definitely do something about his shorelines...(and clouds!) In no way they seem to belong to a 2010s sim! Modded old engine maps look better in some respects to the new one... Look at that great Birdog screen posted by soulfreak!
I have finally bought SF2NA today (I recently bought Acer Aspire 7750G with Win7 as my desktop runs on XP) and run the first single mission and grabbed some screens while was at it, enjoy. I have one question, is it normal that the jet blast deflector doesn't work on the Nimitz (take a look at the first pic)? I remember them working on old Wings Over Vietnam. I've gotta say it looks pretty sweet.
On my way back to Nimitz after first successful mission in the campaign over Iceland I met a flight of Tomcats from sister squadron (VF-41 Black Aces) so took the opportunity to take some pictures for the squadron photo book I handed the camera to the GIB so he could capture the moment from his point of view. Thats me with #3 and #4 in the backround. RIO checking out remaing ordinance on Black Aces Cats - they will add few kills to their killboard today! OK Merlin, enough fun for today let's head for home. These 3 shots were taken by the crew of the escorting vessel and from the Nimitz portraying my landing. Caught 1st wire - LSO's landing score will lover my average, but what the hell I got 3 kills today!
Damson, how did you get those camera views? Did you edit your viewlist or is it somewhee for download?
Great screenshots!!
My best regards, Kodiak.
Thanks Kodiak!
I didn't used any ini edits, no mods whatsoever - vanilla install. And it's quite simple really - I just pause the game, press CTRL-F12 (for free roaming camera) and position the view to get the shot that I want, even from inside the cockpit of aircraft model - this way I took the shots from the RIO seat and from the pilot seat with the RIO in the shot.

Ah, I see. Makes for some really nice screenshots!
Nice plane hopefully someone will make a new Su-34 so that we unlucky bastards that missed insky's model can get the chance to fly one as well. I'm not much for Russian aeronautics but some planes I like, i.e the Flanker, Flogger & Fulcrum family & of course Early MiGs (MiG-15, 17 & 19)
Another batch of shots from few missions of the undergoing campaign. Reconnaissance over Iceland. On my way home passing some barren island. Trapping EA-6B Prowler Another mission: Intercept unwelcomed guest - Bear. Playing with my wingman on route to intercept point. This is my new wallpaper (really ) I give my wingman free hand as I follow him to our target. Trying to catch up... FOX ONE - first Sparrow from my wingman is on the way to ruin some ruskies day. Here's one from me - I'm almost 100% sure it will be spoofed. The same moment from missile's side of view. Yet another one from different angle FOX ONE again... the last one was indeed spoofed... ... as seen here. And another one from my trusty wingman (I wonder how many Sparrows will go to waste today?). We're in Sidewinder range - FOX TWO! ...from different angle. and that is when my film ended. The rest is history - the Bear was shot down by second AIM-9.
Here's some shots from fleet assault - I was flying cover and didn't want to get close to enemy fleet, but managed to capture the moment in which enemy vessel was hit, good thing I packed good photo lenses that day... - Contact Ball! Another recconaisannce over Iceland - still feet wet. Feet dry...
2 bonus shots with Bucaneer on the Nimitz with working jet blast deflectors (it must be aircraft dependent, it didn't worked with Tomcat or earlier version of Bucaneer).
Greetings Kodiak! Nice shots, what environment mod do you use (ENVIRONMENTSYSTEM.INI tweaks maybe?) - I'm unable to achieve such clouds coverage like yours in that shot even in broken weather conditions.

damson, this is with SARCASM 1.2 (not 1.3) but I replaced the file STR_CLOUDS3.TGA from SARCASM with my own, because with the one from sarcasm the clouds look too grey and more like rainclouds, I like my whiter clouds more. That is all I have for enviroment tweaks. If you would install SARCASM 1.2 like me and want my STR_CLOUDS3.TGA let me know, then I'll give you that file.
it seems 90% of game players today know those fancy terms such as "Anti-Aliasing" "HDR" "Shaders 3.0"... but 90% of game players get used to looking at a 2D computer screen taking stationary screenshots and never wondered what "3D" means. the clouds system is used in SF series for years and still no substantial update, there is a reason - most people can't tell the difference between 2D clouds and 3D clouds, and rely on updates of flat textures believing those clouds will look better if more time is spent on the textures. well, that solution is good for both game player and developer.
most people can't tell the difference between 2D clouds and 3D clouds
If you think you can call better shaped, denser emission of 2D billboard graphics a "3D cloud"... well, good luck. I have yet to see a true 3D mesh cloud. Why? Because it's no point making one.
Good copy of RL cirrus shape of multilevel emitters for single cloud would take minutes to render I guess. Remember, alpha-based materials rendering is still pain in a** for modern average Joe computer
edit: correcting my previous post -yes I've seen 3D clouds... back in the first half of the 90s (Su-27 demo, F-117 2.0, Tornado... been there done that)

I think what he means with 3D clouds are volumetric clouds, not polygons like in F-19.

in fact, anything better than a cloud-formed-of-single-particle-which-turns-with-the-viewport is good enough. even some years-old flight sims (from Russia) have good looking 3D clouds.
I tried to land this as the Israeli pilot did but I couldn't control it. Boring escort duty in bad weather conditions. Another escort mission deep into enemy territory resulted into this: merging with polish MIG 21 somewhere over East Germany / Polish border. I dumped those tanks as soon as I got this picture View from the polish MIG 21. He got a shot with an K-13 (AA-2 Atoll) at the friendly F-4E before I shoot him down... On finals at Ramstein AB.
The funniest thing here is that if the stuff that mlracing is posting is in fact a "modded" SF1 or SF2 than it looks inded much "worse" (graphically) than the first Strike Fighters (SF1) with almost every graphic setting on LOW. It's really odd to see someone modifying something in order to look worse than the original. Well, mankind can sometimes exhibit very strange or odd behavior. This definitly gives the saying: "Don't fix what ain't broken" an even more important meaning!
Mlracing is definately hacking the code. I know becouse I used his modified exe for F/A-18 PSF a while back. He made pretty awesome changes to it (you can look for this thread somewhere on simhq btw).
Mlracing if you reading this please consider uploading your videos to some other site (youtube perhaps?) as this japanese? site is so slooooow - your videos are unwatchable there.
Ricnunes those vids are not for nice look but tech hacks that do not need nice backgrounds to show what's the purpose of given video
The main purpose of my previous reply which can to some extend be considered "bashing" is not because of his work itself but because he simply refuses to ask any questions regarding his work! He posts screenshots after screenshots, videos after videos after which people made several questions (which is normal) and his only "reply" was to post more screenshots and/or videos. For example I asked him what game was that (regarding the screenshots that he posted) and the only "reply" that I got was more screenshots.
Curiously, I only got a reply from him was after I "bashed" his work... I don't think this is the "right attitude"...
many say that F14 is much better looking than F18, yet F14 is out and F18 is rising. well, the military must be governed by odd mankinds.
because the F-14 cost too much to maintain compared to the F-18, its not about looks, its about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
The multipurpose capability of the F/A-18 was also a MAJOR factor - the F/A-18 is able to do everything that the F-14 did (if it does it worse, equal or better it's an another matter/discussion) while the F-14 wasn't able to do everything that the F/A-18 does.

MLRacing, you are strange one... I have one challenge for you, and don't take this as my negative approach towards you (I'm not) -try making something with TOD objects (those populating tiles) and try forcing the engine to use custom 3D objects for them

TODs are there for performance reason. each object is formed by minimum polygons. there are already other ways to put custom objects on the terrain. so why change the TODs? -- if your PC is fast, you can use the existing ways to put in custom objects. if your PC is slow, changing TODs to detailed objects will also slow down the game.

Yes but not much, all some (=me) need are picked roof buildings, small blocks of houses etc. I guess <50 polys per object, not much these days. Also populating tiles with targetareas objects would be pointless and resoure killer when one can place them tile-specific and they are automatically repeated on all given tile type on map. Remember all the houses in EAW in cities? Something I'd love to be able to achieve in SF2 but right now not possible due to engine limitations
Cool! I suspected as much, but with the great paints, it really through me off. Thanks for the info. Great looking plnae. Too bad it never came to fruition.
Here are some shots from my last sortie in the campaign (which I won BTW). My task was to provide cover for ground attack aircraft striking the last soviet-occupied airbase on Iceland.
Going feet dry with first victim splashing into cold water near the coast line. Making sure that the sky is clear above last soviet held air base for ground pounders to do their job... ...the base was hit hard. One last peek at the remains of the soviet presence on the island before I head home. My flight rejoins. Cruising over Iceland admiring the hilly eastern coast of the island. I had 2 elements up in the air for this final sortie. On the base leg turning into finals. "Call the ball." The campaign lasted for just a few days, nevertheless it was lot of fun. Next time I see you in the Corsair...
the word "simulation" can mean a lot of things. for some people it means simulation of technical data(F-18 can do mach 1.8 and no more! ), historical data ( there is no F-16 in the year 1965! )... for some people it means simulation of technical theories ( acceleration = force / mass )... and a 3D model of aircraft is just a shell that looks nicer than the "X-Y-Z" symbols. i don't mind an F22 doing VTOL like F35 or an F18 flying in the outer space, as long as the shell looks pretty. i prefer a single 90%-correct-looking 3D model with 1000 historically-wrong functions than 1000 pieces of 60%-correct-looking 3D models with historically-correct functions in the package, which can easily be found on the internet. so if you see a guy made an outer space flight game with an F-18 model, don't think he is an idiot who believes there is plenty of oxygen in the outer space. he may be smarter and more knowledgable than any "expert" whom you believe in.
some "expert" would say: if he is not an idiot , so why does he use an F-18 model in an outer space game? well, why do you play a game in front of a PC? why not buy a real F-18 and fly like real? if you are soooooo into realism.
F-16 can't do VTOL! F-16 can't do carrier Op! yeah blah blah blah, a real F-16 should have an MS keyboard and Logitech joystick in the cockpit , or your "sim" can't be realistic.
Sorry Fenix, this is not aim at you. i am just talking about the common tendencies of people's thinking.
some people think they are experts and the most common reason is that: they haven't seen the real experts, or, they can not understand what the real experts do. just like a pilot who calls himself "ACE" would never expect being shot down by another pilot, until he was.
the word "simulation" can mean a lot of things. for some people it means simulation of technical data(F-18 can do mach 1.8 and no more! ), historical data ( there is no F-16 in the year 1965! )... for some people it means simulation of technical theories ( acceleration = force / mass )... and a 3D model of aircraft is just a shell that looks nicer than the "X-Y-Z" symbols. i don't mind an F22 doing VTOL like F35 or an F18 flying in the outer space, as long as the shell looks pretty. i prefer a single 90%-correct-looking 3D model with 1000 historically-wrong functions than 1000 pieces of 60%-correct-looking 3D models with historically-correct functions in the package, which can easily be found on the internet. so if you see a guy made an outer space flight game with an F-18 model, don't think he is an idiot who believes there is plenty of oxygen in the outer space. he may be smarter and more knowledgable than any "expert" whom you believe in.
some "expert" would say: if he is not an idiot , so why does he use an F-18 model in an outer space game? well, why do you play a game in front of a PC? why not buy a real F-18 and fly like real? if you are soooooo into realism.

Seems like my comment didn't sound as good in text as when I said it. It was not an attack on you thats why I added the smiley after the comment so it wouldn't be taken wrong but it seems it was taken that way anyway. I'm sorry if I upset you with my comment it was not meant to do that. Once again I'm sorry.
it was not your problem Fenix. just that your comment reminded me of some others' behavior and i know what they *serve* . i always like Sweden. at first it was for the rallying, but car racing is old story for me. 1 year ago i got to know the lastest jet fighter of Sweden - JAS39. i love the design, looks more even than EF2000 and Rafale. but there is no high quality 3D model on the internet, so i added canards to my existing models of F-16 & Mirage-5 to simulate the functions of canards.
also i feel that Sweden generally has a more neutral culture than some other countries. also, Sweden has something of its own so it doesn't need to *serve* other countries, JAS-39 is an example.

Yes. Though I haven't played for some years now, I recall that rule. These were never really dressed up like they could have been... Very shall we say basic, candid, and untouched by time? Or rather some old pics that were never intended for release in this state - but rather for self amusement.

maybe the relatively richer people in Sweden are more willing to pay more tax so that the country can spend more on the military.
Well we pay a hell of a lot of tax here but it certainly doesn't go towards the military. Or the police. Or anything else except corrupt politicians and paying for other's welfare.

There is JAS 39 for both SF1 and SF2 and I think they are great looking.

True. But SAAB has nothing to do with our goverment, SAAB is a corporation that is own by private stockowners and our Military buys material from SAAB like any other customer. But lets go back to what this thread is for screenshoots.
i knew about the JAS-39 for SF, but some mis-shape turned me off. compare the 3D model with the real one, the biggest problem lies in the back of the fuselage. while a Mig-21 type of tube-shape fuselage is quite easy to model, the JAS-39 has more complex shape - from rectangle shape section at the front to circle shape section at the rear, in between is the tricky part. generally speaking, only professional modelers can get this type of shape right. considering this area is large in the whole aircraft and it's often visible, the mis-shape is too obvious to me. i know the modders for SF are doing it only as a hobby, i shouldn't ask for more. but when i have better looking models, i won't use a model that looks odd to me.
I'm as interested in some of the terrain I'm seeing, as much as the airplanes. What terrain is that great airfield from, in Sundowners screenshots, on page 68.
Its at Capun's. There is a thread there by Gepard. It was a ground static model and they made it flyable. I don't know if there are any updated skins for it.
Now ya just have to get rid of that Skoshi Tiger pilot.
Good call, Saguanay. I didn't notice. Nice detail though, but for the wrong plane. Other mods I made include transplanting the flight surfaces from the NF-5A: It flies more to my liking. Also added gunsight depression for rockets/bombs.
Right on. Now you have to lose the winders...sorry. All attack for us. 434 SQN used to be stationed about 30 mins from home. They used to come down the river valley on the way back from the low level training area.
I see looking in my "In Canadian Service - Canadair CF-5 Freedom Fighter" I'll have to repaint the tanks for the CL and wingtips grey bottoms to match that grey bottom aircraft.
The model doesn't have the tanks included yet so when that happens then the grey bottoms will be an easy fix.
i wonder how would the special effect look like from other angles. i haven't found an efficient way of representing the transonic wave which would look realistic from every viewpoint, even though i can create 3D models and particles of any shape.
OOPS! Looks like the plane captain forgot the pylon/heater rails.
NIELS
No, the paint job is of an EARLY B model Phantom. VMFA 531 flew the N model with ONLY a blue tail. When I first checked in tho, we had a white rudder. The rest of the tail, royal blue.
Oh Hell - There on the jet, my eyes are going south on me more and more. The shadow on the fins made it appear like the rail was missing. Looked closer
Mika, when did the Third Wire Sims get detailed cities a detailed city such as that? The terrain was the weak part of the sim for me. That and the lousy sky textures. That seems to have changed. This might be worth another look.
I see in the screenshots I see a square marker in the DIANE display which seems to change position when the aircraft moves, what is that marker?
It's a steerpoint marker. DIANE is for looks only. No other functionality, other than pitch/roll. Though, I did add a CCIP mod for accurate bombing. Cool detail: When using LGB or EOGB, copilots display shows camera view (but too bad you can't see it very well).
It will not mark targets. It doesn't point at the waypoint exactly, but the course you should be on to get to the waypoint (I forget what the proper term for this is. I'm not very IFR competent.)
Well, when it comes down to a plane vs another plane, there's always so many variables that it's nearly impossible to outline "Which's the best"...
But I can honestly say that's a mighty fine machine. Easy as a pie, powerful as the eponymous weather phenomenon... I've been largely impressed by both flight characteristics and carefree handling. In proper hands and flown smart, they're basically unstoppable.
Thanks. It almost worked out like the real engagement. They split. I put my wingman on number 2. I made a mistake on the loadout with the AIM54 still loaded so my wingo tried engaging with Phoenix. I came back around and engaged the 2nd Fitter with a Sidewinder. The Fitters tried on both occasions to shoot us with gun vice missile as you can see in this pic.
3. Download and install Stary's tiles as Linked above.
yes?
Actually, Gerwin's latest from that link incorporates a nice mix of his and Stary's tiles that I think looks a little better than just one of the two. Stary's stuff looked great at low level, Gerwins was better from altitude. The blend is spot on in my opinion.
WoW, great! That's for me! Never bought an aircraft DLC (only bought Campaign generator and Mission Editor DLCs) but that will definitly be the first one that I'll buy!
I was pretty surprised to see them in the first place. I've seen F-117s doing nightly low-level(!) attacks in swarms(!) before, but the B-52 were definitely new to me.

After a mo-bo fail and loss of the base games, Mods being OK, this is a result of a environment fail that is being fixed but this shot looks pretty good I think.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 09/23/1311:01 AM
@Digger and Arthur, are you guys using any sort of graphic tools such as FXAA or SweetFx? From your screen shots, it looks as though the graphics have been tweaked a bit. If you are using them, I would like to know how to install. I use SweetFx with a few games, but can't seem to get it to work with my WOV YAP3 install. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 09/23/1310:55 PM
Hi Fish,
Yes i am using SweetFx plus NVidia control panel with settings maxed out for quality on program settings specifically for Stikefighters2( including FXAA).
To get SweetFX to work you need to install in your main strikefighters program folder and in your mods folder for both menu and flight.
Here are 4 examples of some modern jets over vietnam using Green Hell 3 terrain mod and sweetFX.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 09/24/1311:20 PM
Thanks Digger, but I need some clarification. Which files go in the Flight and Menu folders? My version of SweetFx has an automatic installer. No manual copying of files into folders. Thanks again.

some shots from a Turkish Airforce Phantom strike on a rebel comms centre
going feet wet

whilst the strike was successful, didnt have time to take a screenshot of the bombs impact as bounced by migs and taking hits from AAA. My wingman had already taken a hit

some shots from a Marine Harrier strike ( unmitigated failure unfortunately) on a factory complex in the Crimea ast he Black Sea goes hot
heading out the A10's tasked with AAA supression. Intelligence has indicated only defences are AAA so we have been given the A10s as support armed and dangerous wingman on station our aircover,in hindsight we needed more contact, our Falcons start popping off missiles as we try to stay focussed on the target return fire this is going to hurt this is going to hurt more- I had "target lock" mentality and reacted to the missile warning too late, a split second after this shot a missile detonated up my tailpipe. In hindsight 2 Falcons as CAP was never enough as they were overwelmed and 2 russian fighters got through to us. Both Harriers destroyed before making the target

Oh man, that's really nice. I may have to see if I can find that mod.
Can you fly that on the Red side in SF2:NA?
Flying for the red side? Yes, with a few ini file tweaks, effectively adding a cockpit to aircraft that do no otherwise have one.
That Yak-38 model isn't available right now, but will be before this month is out.
Or better (or easier) yet, purchase the "Campaign Customizer" which costs a mere $6.99 USD and after having the Yak-38 working within your game and the Campaign Customizer installed, you can use the Campaign customizer to easily create a new campaign based on any existing SF2 campaign (such as the one in SF2:NA) where you can select an interesting set of options such as choosing the player's side, name of the squadron, player's squadron aircraft, etc...
If you're interested, you can purchase the Campaign Customizer here:
I've found out you still need to do some ini editing anyway even with the campaign editor because the editor doesn't add cockpits to planes without that line in the ini. ANd almost every plane from the "Red" side is missing cockpit at least if the planes are stock.
ANd almost every plane from the "Red" side is missing cockpit at least if the planes are stock.
Actually, every stock red-side aircraft is missing a cockpit. However, there are high-quality cockpits available for the MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-17PF, MiG-19, MiG-21F/PF/MF/Bis, and soon, the MiG-23 variants. The aforementioned Yak-38 has its own pit.
So yes, some ini editing is required, but it's a rather straight forward procedure, as the required file is already present and easily accessible in a given model's folder.
I've found out you still need to do some ini editing anyway even with the campaign editor because the editor doesn't add cockpits to planes without that line in the ini. ANd almost every plane from the "Red" side is missing cockpit at least if the planes are stock.
Yes it's true that the Campaign Customizer doesn't do everything and certainly doesn't do anything related to adding add-on cockpits or extra aircraft but just like Fubar said, most or many add-on cockpit packs already includes the required edited .ini file(s) so installing most or many of these add-on cockpits is just a matter of simply copying the cockpit files from the pack to the right aircraft folder (and overriding the required files).
Anyway even if you had to manually edit the .ini file in order to have an add-on cockpit or aircraft to work this is a process that it's still much more simple than editing the campaign .ini files in order to have flyable or new squadrons for the opposing side with new aircraft, so on this regard the Campaign Customizer does you much, if not most of the work necessary in order to for example be able to play a campaign for the red side with a red side plane.
I know all that but my post was directed to your post about the campaign editor you wrote so it sounded like all you needed was the Campaign Editor.
Sorry if my post/suggestion regarding the Campaign Editor gave you the impression that this tool also allowed the player to install new addon aircraft. That was not my intention even because I though that the name "Campaign Editor" made that clear enough.
However and incurring the risk of repeating myself, it's way much harder to edit a campaign (or create a new one) in order to for example to allow you to play with the other side (Red) with flyable squadrons with new addon aircraft than it is to install a new addon aircraft (or cockpit) which is usually a very straightforward task. The Campaign Editor helps you on this regard.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 10/07/1402:16 AM
You have to understand... I have been playing DCS for weeks with little or no SF2. But I have flown SFP1 since the Walmart release. Returning to the SF2 unslatted early F-4E is like heaven to me. The F-4E in SF2 has a great feel to its flight model... as good as the DCS MiG-21bis IMHO. TK could compete with DCS if he could afford to put just a little more polish into SF2. I love flying the MiG-21, especially the DCS:MiG-21bis, but I love killing them with F-4's even more

YAP objects are compatible with the SF2XX genre. You just have make the required INI edits for them to function as the SF2xx objects do. They will function okay without the edits.

I have YAP3 and YAP Flight School but I thought they only worked with the original Wings over Vietnam, so they're not installed

Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 12/06/1505:39 PM
So as far as I can tell this is an old model from pre-2006 from WPNSSGT or another fella. No names on the file.
Some problems. 1. Needs a few more polys added for rounding and details it out but other than that, pretty good. 2. A poly prob right around where the side numbers go on the fuselage causing a decal bleed onto the nose. Fixed it somewhat by moving the decal down a bit. The other thing about the side decals is they show up twice, another time on the inside of the intake. 3. Landing gear struts will pop up through the fuselage as the gear retracts. Put its just a flash. 4. Right elevator is mapped to the left side. Fine for the grey skin but now for the camo and a few probs in the camo skin between the fuselage and the wing gloves. Not seen on the grey skin though. 5. 10 animation slots used 6. Missing the pylons on the inner wing stations. Initial loading of those weapon stations looked dumb since they were hanging in the air.
Plane is re-skinned and working on details. Fun flights.

Stary: I'm still trying to complete/fix some of the old WIP data inis. Tis been going on daily for 2 weeks, but as with inis they don't showcase with flashy screenshots:( Then I need to test the campaigns with revised strategic nodes. Haven't even added your tigercat/starfire cockpits yet. Then need to look at whiteboysamurai's ww2 Essex. One step at a time...

yup is the best approach, me impatient as I tend to be, used to screw installations by adding way too much at once and being unable to pinpoint the CTD-causeing mod(s) later

curious about the WIP data inis you write about
thanks for understanding m8!... and yeah i'll get there just with more focus on stability.
the inis.. I guess short version is if AI/player takes battle damage the FM switches to "hard". So AI can stall/spin if it pulls too hard which it often does. some of my inis have too strong pitch command and a full pitch can easily overshoot to departure. If it's player he can recover, but if it's AI it doesn't know how. So the aero data need to take this into account (which it mostly does in TK's default data).
so i adjusted pitch moment, adjusted elevator angles, adjusted lift center. but you change one, many other params need changing and you find more problems so it's a snowballing effect...
I reckon it's also because we've made planes more durable in these guns only theaters, as the same with your korea enhancement mod. TK's default setup planes are fragile, plus most times you have missiles or at least 30mm "nuclear" shells where planes go down with just 1 hit. becomes different when you're shooting machineguns etc. they take hits but sometimes they continue to maneuver/fight.

Hello all,
After seeing this series of screen shots, I'm ready to spring for SF2 "entirely" to fly in the Korean war (I don't have an interest in jet combat beyond that time period).
In looking over the Korean Air War add-on, plus this wonderful set of tiles/objects, I'm fine with the retail outlay, and I want to bring in everything on this list:
Requirements: SF2 Israel, SF2 Vietnam, SF2 Europe, July 2012 patch level or above.
Recommended but not necessary: SF2 Expansion Pack 1, SF2 Expansion Pack 2, SF2 North Atlantic.
I've found everything on the Third Wire site except the Expansion packs. The Expansion Packs only show up at free download sites. Google has old links into Third Wire to buy the Expansion packs at retail, but they are dead ends.
Are the free download Expansion packs legit?
I used to have an extensively modified version of FE2, so I may have some of the pieces already. I can't remember which SF2 pieces the FE2 installation is based on.
Just want to have my ducks in a row and know I can put all the pieces together before I do this.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 02/03/1703:11 AM
SFP1's original Korea was easily one of if not the best mods for SFP1. The latest/greatest SF2 Korea is even better. It is a great experience being able to fly virtually any aircraft/mission that historically occurred in Korea. For pure F-86 vs MiG-15 combat, I enjoy DCS World more at this point because of the flight and systems modeling. But If you want anything more, nothing else beats SF2. You can fly night missions with Skyknights and Tigercats, ground attack missions with F-51, F-84, F-86, F9F, F4U, F2H, etc. You can fly red side, or other UN forces as well. If you enjoy the terrain, the time frame, and the history that goes with it, it will be a very long time before you get bored with SF2 Korea.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 02/06/1702:54 PM
well SF has scale. open modding allows community addons for any aircraft so KAW is mostly complete aircraft wise. plus a dynamic campaign engine; plus decent AI; plus not bad damage modeling.
it is "low-fi" but it is FUN.
you also learn stuff. for example what i learned about the F-86 series' wing evolution (below is from myself's modding notes):
F-86F 6-3 wing for reference. one small change for wing, one big change for the aircraft!..
result of 6-3 extension
lift area+ wing loading- ceiling+ climb+; zero lift drag-, max speed+; aero center+, stability-, bombing accuracy-; chord+, aspect ratio-, induced drag+; roll response-; high sub sonic vortex gen, critical alpha+ max lift+ instantaneous rate+ (a2a prowess+); deletion of slats, stall speed+ low speed handling- low speed maneuverability-;
summary: increased a2a effectiveness but also brings quite a few vices, especially design intention 6 AR, 4.78 final early slatted, 6-3 extension makes it worse
result of 86F-40 12in wingtip extension vs base 6-3
lift area+ wing loading-; zero lift drag+, max speed-; aero center-, stability+; aspect ratio+, induced drag-, sustained rate+; roll response-; slats restored, stall speed- low speed handling+ low speed maneuverability+; slats improved open at high sub sonic, critical alpha+ max lift+ instantaneous rate+;
summary: best wing of the series
series summary: 86E best handling, underpowered; most a2a prowess at its time 86F 6-3 w/o 12in ext; most technical maturity 86F 6-3 w/ 12in ext, a little outdated 54'-55' time wise.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 02/06/1707:00 PM
Thanks for all this good feedback, guys!
Still haven't pulled the trigger, but will on the next slow rainy day. I found some YouTube vids of the KAW mod for SF2 that blew my mind!
Also, won't be touching the what appeared to be pirated expansion packs. I just didn't see that "Show All Windows 7" button at the bottom of the page.
Apart from the legality and the fact that they own the copyrights, little companies like Third Wire need our support even if they have stopped developing this product. They might come back if they see a steady stream of income still coming from an old product.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 07/01/1804:10 PM
It's a F3D SkyKnight and it's from Capun's download site. I just started working on the skin. He just released it as a Beta. The only other skin I have seen for it is from a guy on CA, Spinners and he made a what if USAF skin for it and I don't think its for download.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 04/25/1910:55 PM
The Floggers do look nice...I especially like the early Flogger-A variant with the 20% narrower chord wings...it looks fast. Currently working on some early WW2 and pre-WW2 FM tweaks for SF2...representative pics below for a far eastern scenario...will eventually get to uploading this FM pack...I particularly like the early "Army Zeke" (Ki-43) and Curtiss P-36 dogfights for early war scenarios...other two pics. are from my Cold War prop FM package...high-alt. Me109 getting ready for a morning flight...and a jeep waiting for me on my return.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 04/26/1905:41 PM
Some nice stuff there, vonS.
For me, SF has always been the so far never realised, missed chance for that Holy Grail of WW2 flightsims, 'EAW2'. Highly modable, an established community, an underestimated dynamic campaign, respectable graphics with dynamic shadows, good aircrew animation, ability to have unit and individual aircraft markings, and decent, basic squadron management (or 'roster management'). As FE/FE2 proved with WW1, it would still make a very good basis for a very good WW2 sim which with community mods providing more planes and maps, could beat the socks off the more modern, more 'introverted' and DLC-based rivals.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 04/26/1910:34 PM
Nice pics all - found memories of SF2 and the like. I tried it for WW2 (there are some big mod packs for it for that) - but when I played a mission and watched each Beaufighter in turn (an entire squadron) attempt to dive bomb a ship, each diving too steep and all crashing, one after the next, I kinda walked away at that point. Maybe I will try it again sometime for WW2 (still have an enhanced Vietnam version on my hard drive).
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 08/02/1910:28 PM
Nice, clean aircraft, the Seahawk. I fondly recall building the Airfix 1/72 model, which not only had both RN and Bundesmarine decals, but also the taller fin for the latter - not bad for a 1960s Series 1 kit.
Re: Thirdwire series Screenshots - 12/10/1905:42 PM
Great pics. gents' - I hardly get time to post here on the TW thread on SimHQ so here goes with a few pics. from FE2...currently testing my ver. 9.9 FM update pack using the lovely map for Caporetto by gTerl. Action with Pfalz Parasols and the Morane Bullet, also did a precarious landing. This sim is always full of surprises and gives a lovely sense of flight. The lighter-colored trees are Geezer's tweaks, one of his modifications for the Italian theater.

I agree. Its quiet in a lot of departments as of late. Nice Phantom shot. Saguanay's Viking shot through the trees is also cool. Haven't flown in Thirdwire in a long time. Always loved the Century series planes.

For some reason I always remembered this post of yours (Saguanay) and my reply both of which I quote above, this despite being quite old (more than 7 years old!).
It seems now that you must take the dust off your F-35 in the paintshop and make it "fly"

For posting a full image and not just a series of thumbnails that have to be opened, open the thumbnail image from the post you just submitted, right click and select "copy image address", then edit the post you just submitted, click on the "insert image link" button, then right click mouse and copy and past the url you saved and apply it to your post and complete the post editing. Now your post should have a full size image within. I'm not sure if this will help you or not but its what I do now. It used to be easier by just using the insert image function but now it has to be done in a roundabout kind of way. There may be another way but this is the only way I know.
