DCS WWII: Europe 1944: Kickstarter is LIVE - 09/07/13 06:02 PM

I'm sure most of you have seen this kickstarter project in other forums, but for those that haven't here it is.

If you visit this forum your probably a fan of Olegs and luthiers efforts with IL-2 1846. This is their new project. Check out their new partners and hopefully pledge what you can.

So $1000000 will net you a narrow-scope western front edition of IL-2?

Nah.

It will scale upwards depending on the pledges reached. The higher the pledge level allows more employees to create more maps/aircraft/features etc.

If the hundred thousand level isn't reached there will still be a free demo that includes the
•Republic P-47D-28 Thunderbolt;
•Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX;
•Messerschmitt Bf-109K-4;
You will have to buy the P51 and FW190

After the free demo is released, and sales/pledges are enough to warrant more theaters, it will happen. Kickstarter is allowing the development to hire more people and get more done in the year. There long range plan is the same as the original IL-2 series, but without being handcuffed by publishers/investors. Personally I would much rather have the developer making decisions rather than beancounters.

Interesting financial model. I can see what they are trying to do, and I will monitor this to see how it pans out.

Cheers,

ATAG Bliss is giving away a set of Crosswind Rudder Pedals if we get 1000 people to pledge $40 or more.

I pitched in $100.

Looking to the future, a new WW2 sim based on up to date technology is good for gamers.

The developers obviously have unsurpassed experience and could make the best WW2 sim ever -- provided the game engine runs smooth (I think CoD was let down by the engine -- not the concept). If 1944 is based on an evolved DCS engine, I think its a good gamble -- and a cheap gamble in the big scheme of things (PC costs, games bought, time spent).

I may consider being a backer but I have not seen what sort of copy protection it will have. A bit of a worry as DCS have limited installs as far as I know. But could be wrong there.

If like other kick starters you got a protection free version I will kick in straight away. But not interested if backers have protection or activation to content with.

But I hope they do well, 1946 is still going strong so I hope their next one is a success.
In fact 1946 may be their biggest hurdle.

I got that perfectly fine, but why, of all engines in the world, DCS?! They don't even have a large-scale map!

The kickstarter is a great way to avoid this.

The Normandy map is scalable in every direction. The Normandy map will probably scale faster or slower depending on kickstarter monies available to hire more talented people for a very time consuming task. Not to mention the Ardennes map, etc etc etc thru to the Pacific Theater, and beyond.

Yes kickstarter is a great way to avoid beancounter roadblocks, which was my intended point. It also requires the developer be far more accountable for financial/developmental actions, as they won't be able to rely on relatively steady investors monies, and will depend on a finite Kickstarter and sim sales. I support the genre, because it the only genre I'm interested in, and because its a niche highly detailed genre that has become too time consuming and expensive for most large private investors to bother with. Its an incredibly cheap investment for years of entertainment value.

I'm hesitant to invest in this sim, but I haven't ruled the idea completely out of the question. Some stocks you buy purely because they pay dividends. Some you buy because the face value is below market value, and is expected to go up. In some cases you buy because both assertions are true for a given stock. I can't decide which sort of investment this sim is. I'm already curious about why the 109K was chosen. Only 750 were produced, and though the fastest variant it was not a stable plane at high altitude (so I've read).
Also, in view of other landscapes (IL2, IL2-CoD, IL2-BoS, Wings of Prey, and War Thunder) the DCS landscape will need to step it up in that area. Maybe forthcoming landscape renderings will help make the case for investment.
Also, if DCS really believes in the sim, why doesn't it finance the project? Given it's footprint in combat sims, it wouldn't be like the bean counters would rule the day. A hard one to judge.

I understand your position fully but thankfully there were enough people who aren't sitting on the side lines waiting to see if the project will be good enough to support otherwise none of us would be getting a chance to find out for ourselves if it is worthy of our support in the future. Hopefully the project meets enough of our expectations that after its release it gains enough followers to be successful for a long time. smile

any chance for a random generated campaign engine like DGEN? not even dynamic, just random generated.

I put some money down.
If nothing else, I'll get a cool, limited edition T-shirt, but I have confidence in Oleg and Ilya.

Somehow your post breath a little "I'm more than you trooper" but I'm sure that's just a misunderstanding from me not being native english language.

Re: DCS WWII: Europe 1944: Kickstarter is LIVE - 09/25/13 11:03 AM

Although I bought all things IL2 and loved the series, (I spent lots of money buying all their products) I was not, and still am not happy with the money I wasted on CLoD.
I'll gladly buy this offering 'after' I see good reviews and it is up and running.
I have seen on all the forums talking about this new game that 'we should' put money into it to make it viable... That is a very narrow view to take, with the inference that if we don't we will be somewhat responsible if it isn't a success.
Please allow me to choose how and when I spend my own money!
I have spent much of my hard earned cash on all of Olegs products in the past and have more than earned my right to sit back on the fence with this one...

Nowhere in my post did I say I have supported the KickStarter project or tell you to support it.

Enough people, none of us, - descriptive terms that are not singular but plural in nature.

Even though I quoted your post I tried to make my post as plural in nature as possible so it wouldn't be seen as directed solely at you.

I pleased to see oleg is back and working with dcs eagle dynamics now only if they can get the old janes crew/ EAW, cfs, airwar aceshigh novalogic crews and of course Spectrum HoloByte. smile Should be interesting. All the new wwii sims just dont do it for me and are too greedy with charges for small ammount of content even though these new models and cockpits require much more time and skill to make.

I think we have been spoiled with the massive cfs free content and ammount of aircraft in il2 series. But to me online play is what makes it worth while and a large community, How many players can be in one massive game, map size (full world w/ refueling and rearming ) different fronts aircraft is a must one front is just boring to me and why i could never get into cod even though patchs made it better I still prefer il2 because of content and has more players online which is nowhere near the 1000s we use to have daily.

Also different game types would be interesting like the old airwarriors series. Taking over bases or destroying all runways and factories to win the map along with planes per map.

I dont think a flightsim will ever be a big money maker unless its main focus is the air that includes land troop/vechiles and sea like arma/cod/ro2/bf4 with vechiles etc to get the masses into it for the fps with vechiles thats fast paced arcade with somewhat realistic flightsim and get them hooked on the wwii aviation.

What ever it is they comeup with hope its good and caught my interest. Grow the mustache back for the success of the flightsim
