Man, that was so painful to watch.
Surely, the Luftwaffe Fw190Ds had self-starters.

Could this be the reason why so many were caugh on the ground.

Any Luftwaffe experts, out there, want to clarify this impression?

Hi,

In his "operational" configuration .. this engine was equiped with a starter (see the "starter generator" in the drawing... and the pic)
The FW 190 was a very advanced fighter plane for the era and was fully equiped of sophisticated electrical systems (his cockpit panel and equipement prefigure already the jet age panels)

Only when Americans use it (maybe they had not find the right button .. the panel is sophisticated !!) smile

Afaik the engine starts were made without the "Kommandogerät", a small "computer" which adjusted the engine´s settings for optimal operation. Some of the sophisticated equipment WC is talking about...

Those very late Fw190 are gorgeous, sure they can put a bloody fight in the correct hands even for pilots like Clostermann wink

Hey, that's not a nice thing to say about Chinese manufacture. If it was made there the winder would snap, the motor fall off, and then the factory manager shot... laser

Oh ye of lttle faith..Most german planes had an inertia start as a backup if electrical power wasn,t available.Operation is easy...Keep winding over the "Real heavy" flywheel then to start ignition just drop the clutch.Same if your push starting a car..Same operation.
Spitfires had the Coffman starters or electrical start but behind the pilots seat on the Frame 11 bracing was a starting handle to be used by ground crew if needed..
