Well, I was going to go to bed, now I can't stop watching their videos. Wow, these guys are incredible. I really like this one.

I have a Leonid & Friends thread in the music forum, and they are amazing. Vasily (singer who does Terry Kath’s parts) is just a beast.

Unfortunately, looking over their tour dates, they seem to keep to the North and California. I'd go see these guys if they came down South, no question.

Hearing the old Chicago hits live would make for an incredible date night. They play NYC so maybe I can line up a show with my 3rd trip already in planning, or somewhere along the route.

Amazing sound!

But can they write their own, original music?

I don’t know but I completely agree that music composition is an entirely higher level of talent.

Let me put it this way: the number of people who can sing and/or play an instrument is a LOT higher than the number of people who can compose music.

While this is from a few years ago I gather it's still true today. Most of the hit songs today are written by two guys:

I'm sure they can, but as Zoso (a popular Led Zeppelin tribute I see frequently) said, "Ya gotta pay the bills." You see, all these guys want to play a certain *type* of music but that type is no longer popular enough to sustain a living so they play covers which is (mostly for nostalgic old-timers who generally aren't interested in discovering original music...people like me smile ).

I watched a well done documentary on Zoso and they would much rather play their own music, but people won't come out to hear it.

Something interesting I read recently...

Usually a venue agrees to pay royalties when they book a tribute band (music of a single band) but not with a cover band (music of a decade or era). I don't know if that's true. Maybe someone here who's been in a tribute or cover band can confirm.

even if they only do covers, its better than 99.999 % of the sh1t out there nowadays...

Bummer. frown

I thought music was dead a decade ago, but then I discovered the indie scene and haven't looked back. I hear new music all the time, mostly on college radio and youtube channels. I love variety. smile

This is the key right here. Music (stuff like straight up Rock that flourished from the 60's through the 90's) only died from the mainstream.

I think it's easy for us to forget at times that what constitutes "mainstream music" has been constantly changing for centuries. Why aren't Gregorian chants popular with the mainstream today? Or opera? Or barber shop quartets? All three of these genres were incredibly popular with the general mainstream audiences at the time when those genres first appeared.

My older brother feels the same way (lives in Tucker so probably listens to the same college radio). Being that my musical tastes is more diverse than some, I feel that my catalog of 70's and 80's (with some 60's and 90's) is enough variety to last a lifetime. I'm really not interested in listening to radio or searching the 'net for new music I'd enjoy, which for me would be like finding a needle in a haystack. Besides, nothing new is going to remind me of driving to Biloxi and Gulf Shores, trying to get lucky on a beach at sunset...like old Chicago. wink

There have actually been thorough studies conducted where it was shown that nostalgia plays a HUGE factor behind the music preferences of many people and that music has an especially strong psychological effect on the human mind during the childhood and teenage years.

New music to me is for younger people. It's their time (referencing The Goonies). May they experience life to the fullest with the proper soundtrack to trigger their memories in later years...with a big ass smile on their face. biggrin
