In a world trying to belittle who "we" are and where "we" come from that letter written by Lt. Cmdr. John Shea is really worth reading.

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe three US fleet carriers were lost during the war. Hornet, Wasp and Yorktown.
I know a few light and escort carriers were lost as well.
Edit: I forgot about Lexington. So 4 fleet carriers were lost.

12 carriers were lost if the Langley is included.

Right, this list also includes escort and light carriers.

Thanks for posting that link F4U.
As the dad of two young children, I found John Shea's letter to his son tremendously affecting.
On par with the Sullivan Ballou's letter to his wife eighty years earlier.
