RIP Jerry Pournelle.

RIP Jerry Pournelle. - 09/11/17 07:46 AM

One of my favourite science fiction authors and political commentators. He will be remembered not least for his Iron Law of bureaucracy:

...in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people: those who work to further the actual goals of the organization, and those who work for the organization itself. Examples in education would be teachers who work and sacrifice to teach children, vs. union representatives who work to protect any teacher including the most incompetent. The Iron Law states that in all cases, the second type of person will always gain control of the organization, and will always write the rules under which the organization functions.

Great collaborations with Larry Niven, and the first author to write a novel on a computer!

Sad news. RIP.

I first encountered his writings back in the early '80's when he wrote for Byte Magazine.

From there, it was an easy, logical, and extremely enjoyable foray into his various novels -- I too, think his work with Niven was exceptional.

He'll be missed.

Truly a great man has passed. He'll have lots to talk about with Heinlein and Arthur Clarke. So many great books, Lucifers Hammer, the Mote books, the Codominion books, Janissaries, Footfall......the list just goes on and on. His two books based on Dantes Inferno were some of the most brilliant stuff I ever read.

RIP
