looking for a classic Colt 1911 .45 suggustions? - 03/04/16 07:31 PM

Hey boys and girls, retirement is 28 days away... after 30+ years of military and law enforcement service looking to find me a retirement gift... googles not helping much on this. I don't want one of the new modern .45 1911's like the Springfield, thou it is nice... I'm looking for a new military spec 1911 .45 like the one I shot in my Army days back in 85.

I new weapon that is made old school M1911 .45

anyone got some suggestions? places to look? people you might know?

thx.

Don't know anything about 45s to give any meaningful suggestions.

Just want to say congrats on your tenure. You survived the beat. Here's to a safe final 28 days and a happy retirement.

Happy retirement Magnum!! Hopefully this means you can join us for ArmA Military Mondays. biggrin

As for your Colt question, I would just PM Bill Grant. smile

Don't skimp and buy a lame Kimber. You only retire once, splurge a little on a Wilson or Les Baer or something wink

Magnum, if you want something just about the same as the military without paying premium price try the Rock Island 1911's. Pretty much exact copies. They are good guns for the price. I have one and it has been good.

Here is a review. Get it without the upgrades.

I have the G.I. Government model. Like you I wasn't after a fancy or expensive gun; just something nostalgic of what I carried.

That's nice Maddog. A few changes from the Government issue, but very nice.

I ask the same question for 90% of the guns people buy. Most folks love spending money on toy collections, far as I can figure. Same as boats or motorcycles or something.

Magnum, congrats on retirement!

Choices are:
Springfield Milspec 1911
Remington R1
Rock Island Armory 1911

All are great.
I listed in Quality & price order.

That said I would look for a Dan Wesson VBob or Valor.
Or a Wilson.
Or an STI from Texas! biggrin

I'll third, fourth or fifth a Rock Island 1911. Good, basic, traditional M1911.

Wait, didn't you just transfer to the water police six months ago? Summer season is starting, Magnum! Beautiful young ladies are checking if their bikinis still fit... Now is the time to enjoy.

...I see they already gave you your own boat? click

Got a RIA m1911-a1, I changed the grips to McCormick thin rosewood as I didnt like the stock wood. The Newer RIA GI have the rollmark moved to above the thumb safety which is nice. (mine has a billboard)

Now I was looking for the closest WW2 GI version and the RIA seemed the closest at the time. anyway...

Auto Ordnance GI-type 1911BKO is a “no frills” pistol with styling similar to the US service pistols.

My first 'brand new' handgun, a Colt 'series 70' 1911.
Still looks like new, bought it in 1970 IIRC.
From what I've learned, the basic difference is, when they came out with the series 80 they had to have a safety that would lower when you pull the trigger and unblock the hammer from coming down on the firing pin. That means there is another function involved, moving the blocking lever from blocking the hammer.
Which is why the series 70 is preferred over the newer ones.

The pin block on the 'series 80'

My series 70;

What I wish I had, 'Gold Cup Series 70', but can't afford;

Actually "MY" series 70;

Note the wear on bluing at the tip of the bbl, and the slide.
That's what happens when you use a holster.
....for a decade or two....
Wouldn't happen, on a SS Gold Cup wink
