If you zoom wa in at the bottom of the imagine while facing the peak, you can see base camps which give it some scale.

Re: Astounding picture of Mount Everest - 12/19/12 05:40 AM

If you rotate the view all the way to the right, you will see a
ridge in the middle distance, in between two (gravel covered)
glaciers. It has a rather ragged edge to it, and if you zoom
in to the second peak along that ridge from the left (bottom)
you will see it is festooned with strings of coloured cloth,
and just to the left of the top, there is a guy standing there.

...My main impression from this pic is *gravity*. And with all
the shards of rock the size of skyscrapers shedding off those
mountains, I am reminded that this is also earthquake country.
As in my part of the world, when one of those things lets loose,
the bigger blocks of debris will bounce all the way across the
valley, and run up the far side as much as half as far as they
fell.

Other thought: the air is incredibly clear, and the elevations
make for lines of sight far longer than one can experience anywhere
else, but the lack of familiar structures makes it hard to
comprehend the scale. I'm unable to find anything past the
middle distance to calibrate the size of things.

Re: Astounding picture of Mount Everest - 12/19/12 06:45 AM

Yep, is there anything on the mountain to get a sense of scale, no people at all?
Ive always wanted to see Everest in person, climb it? no thanks.

I figured that one doesn't really get how big it is from the picture of the mountains alone...

...then I zoomed in and found the tents and the campsite.

Amazing photo! The clarity is incredible - when my wife and I were travelling in Nepal last year the smoke and smog was often so bad we could barely see the hillsides just a few hundred metres away! Of course that just made the occasions when the wind changed and cleared it all away even more memorable and breathtaking.

If you start at the topmost group of climber's campsites on the left edge of the glacier, and follow the left hand edge of the glacier up towards everest you will see quite a few groups of climbers making their way up and down the mountain. There's also some prayer flags strung out on the glacier itself, and in the top part of the glacier there's a bunch of tents and a long line of climbers. I couldn't see anyone on or around the summit itself though.

There's a mobile phone tower among the trekking lodges (the stone buildings with the blue roofs way over on the far right). The inexorable march of technology! smile

Beautiful.

Except for the hundreds of tents. What a circus.

Re: Astounding picture of Mount Everest - 12/19/12 11:53 AM

Right! Where the (main, left side) glacier swings away to the right and
disappears from view, right where the edges of the two mountains form a
"V", if you zoom all the way in and look beyond to the flat region above
the V, you can see a great mob of people standing on the snow, and a small
line of them travelling away and up what looks like a fearsome slope of
ice. They follow along the right hand edge of an immense chute of ice,
and at two elevations you can see little clusters of tents.

I have no clue which way they would proceed from there.

This is just great, now half of our office have been at a standstill for longer or shorter periods of time while people scroll through the whole picture looking for climbers, tents and other fascinating stuff. I'm sure our CEO would have a few well-chosen words for our opening poster... biggrin

Zoom in and follow the left side of the glacier in center left of the picture. Go slow and you will see them. My coworkers have found climbers and even a couple of advanced camps. Also found a team of 3 with a figure a few hundred yards downslope who appears to have said the hell with it.

There are a lot of dead bodies there. If you ever make the climb, from what I've read be ready to see some dead frozen people...

After listening to the audiobook of Into Thin Air, this is about as close and detailed I need to be to Everest. Such a harsh and unforgiving environment.

Heck, the pictures of many of them are online. One area of the mountain is called "rainbow valley" because of all the brightly-colored jackets that clad the climbers that never made it back.

What an awesome photo. The highest I can spot anyone is about half way up the Lotse face, maybe around 7000m.
