Soupdragon, what a collection of great music. But I must say that I got stuck on the Elvis song and must take some time to recover before I listen to your other recommendations. Thanks!
JayHawk that was #%&*$# Awsome...... Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones rawx.....and those oldies loved it, you could see they were telling the young guns how to play. Fantastic. the Foo fighters drummer is fantastic too.
Flatlander, nice choices mate. Loved the Tull piece particularly. great stuff. Is your missus a jazz buff by any chance? thats some great jazz playing by Mr Coltrane.
SD my wife like pretty much any pop music American Idol included. I love all music on the other hand. This here is giving me Halloween costume ideas...
taken from the Vienna album. A fantastic Group, a fantastic track and a fantastic album. Unfortunately kept of the number 1 spot in the UK by this piece of #%&*$#.
Can you #%&*$# believe it? makes you wonder doesn't it.
bit of a tangent, but, I love Madness. Seen them 4 times in concert, brilliant. I love this one, even though it was recorded under the dangermen series.
Yuck didn't like that version of watchtower at all. sorry mate but that was awful. It's like there is only one inspector Clouseau (peter sellers). And the only singer of along the watchtower is Hendrix.
Funny I never got "into" Springstein. I like some of his early stuff with the E-street band but I never really got the whole springstien phenomenon in the 80's
What a great video. Do you live there AirDog? Must be great to see the place you live in so long ago. Funny thing is, what struck me is that every single person/animal is now dead, wow, how wierd is that. Great video though. I loved it
SD, have you ever seen them in concert when they do one of their hootenanies? They have local musicians (instrument unimportant) audition, and perform with them onstage at shows! Here's a good video of that:
hootenanie is a Scottish thing right? Not sure what you are trying to say here. they have an open mike session? If so cool. unfortunately the video stopped playing so I am guessing. But it looked great and I now think weezer are a cool band
Badfinger plays Day After Day live - Nicely done by a superb band, but no piano, which is a signature of the original glorious George Harrison production. Pete Ham amazes once again.
QUOTE FROM YT: Boston performs More Than A Feeling LIVE at Giants Stadium, NJ, 6-17-79. Rare video of the ORIGINAL BAND! NO, this was not a sound check.
A good live version of Foreplay/Longtime year unknown
I love Fleetwood Mac, And I thik Stevie Nicks is/wad fantstic. I like to think I called my daughter after sara in the song, but my grandmother was called sara too, so maybe not, But Fleetwood Mac are bloody brilliant.
SD, I really enjoyed the Specials track you had on the last page! Nice to hear some old-school second wave Ska. So here's some third-wave/ Skacore from this side of the pond.
This is a great track. reminds me of a young girl I was with at the time.
The guy sounds a bit gay now, but the memories it envokes are certainly not Al Stewart is a good guy for getting me laid (again). This seems to be chick music, but I love it
Now to bring us more up to date I give you ..............(drumroll) RadioHead!(tshh)
I love this track, probably my Favoriite From these guys, although they do have a great repetoire. Creep is a great track too, if you dont know it take a listen to it.
I love this peice of music. I could say all the BS about missing my dad and all that. But it is a great song, Oh and I miss my dad, gone 8 years now. But I loved this song before he went. So enjoy and please make the most of you dad, you never know when he migh be gon from your life, and when he's gone he's gone for good. I feel really sad now but at least I was there when he went. God bless.
Please forget all about Res Dogs. This is a fantastic song, ruined by being placed into a nasty place in a film made by some hollywood dickhead. great group, great song.
I remember I was in Spain when Live Aid was on. This is a great song from a great singer. Paul Young used to be the lead singer in a band called the Q-Tips, and they stayed at my mates house once, maybe my claim to fame
I don't particularly like this song, but it is such a perfectly timed song, everyone loves it. Try it, start singing it and see how many people sing along, I bet it will be most, if not all of them. Everyone knows this song.
she's not from Cardiff mate , thats Nina Pearson from the Cardigans who are Swedish. but she might as well be nice Cardiff girl Oh! and before the PC police arrive The Manics are from Newport, not Cardiff
I wish I couldfind a good video of Luther singing this, but all I can find amongst all the wannabe's is this. It's a shame because it is a beautiful song.
It's now an out-of-print hard-to-find album called Buckingham and Nicks. Quite good, and from what I understand is what made Mick Fleetwood look them up - rest is history.
Mace great song, but I am not sure about the vid that goes with it. I was at some of the Poll tax protests. And with the Miners in teh 80's and it was bloody hard to see shiot going on. But I digress. Wasn't this Mr Cash's last album?
One of my favorites back when I was a DJ in an "Adult Entertainment" Bar, some Bimbo would come up with like a huge book of CD's and say "You WILL play this, this and this when I dance".......
LOL
I played this just to let them know who was boss:
remember they were on stage half naked already.......
Took me three years to get to that point. I dealt with CRAP you would not believe. Had a GREAT time and RAN away...that's why I am still alive.
I find that every good music thread needs an absolutely horrible song to balance things out.
And so, I present the following by The Chemical Brothers. I wish they had fallen into a vat of very corrosive chemicals prior to recording this atrocity.
Dig this Nixer, real cool cats :-) hehe check out that bass ..always wanted one, but my Les & Jazz are gonna have to do. I don't think I can sit on em like that tho ...might screw up the jacks! ;=D
My favorite "Stones" songs. Almost 50 years later and they can still rock out. What an awsome band! Plus they have captain Jack Sparrow playing guitar. How awsome is that
Airdog what instrument was that guy playing? Is it one if those middle eastern things (dunno the name) very unique sound that guy has.
SD
ahoy SD :-) it's called a Tuvan Igil
here's what I learnt in 2 minutes:D
"An igil is a two-stringed Tuvan musical instrument, played by bowing the strings. (It is called "ikili" in Western Mongolia.) The neck and lute-shaped sound box are usually made of a solid piece of pine or larch. The top of the sound box may be covered with skin or a thin wooden plate. The strings, and those of the bow, are traditionally made of hair from a horse's tail (strung parallel), but may also be made of nylon."
agreed, unusual & he's very good with it. Kinda cool what can be done with 2 strings.
..I remember seeing this band when I was 12. The owner of the music shop in Biloxi was about to have a stroke because he loaned the super-beatle amps to em to use that night. The stage was plywood & the amps were rocking back & forth from all the jumping ..almost falling over a few times yeah it was loud as hell!
GRRRR! I was about to post a bit of Genesis, namely ABACAB. I'll post it any way 'cos I love this song. I know the jury is out betsween Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins but i think they both do a great job.
20MM as much as I love EJ there is only one singer in that video, and thet wouldmbe Mr Pavorotti, seems to me to be another "I am brillliant" video by Mr John, whom I am starting to despise by the minute.
One of the major problems with rock & roll these days is it seems everyone's doing what they've always been doing, and very few bands are willing to be different and do their own thing. So, I give you...different!
Holy crap, I haven't heard the Crash Test Dummies since Middle School! Another one in the same vein (I've always loved the guitar part at the beginning of this song):
partied with this dude at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport once the good old days...
Dude!
First time I ever heard Johnny play was at this wannabe Pop Festival in Orlando, Fl....1970....I think Not sure... That's where I met Stan Owsley and Wavy Gravy...Strange Cats
A few months later, Next time was at a concert in Orlando...my best friend was the promoter, I kinda had the run of the place. We talked Johnny and his brother Edgar ( was playing with him at the time) into driving 80+ miles to my friends beach house and they jammed with the band we had for like two hours! Amazing stuff. I told Johnny this was my favorite song of his and him and my friends did a great job...Edgar was playing sax BTW that nite. TOTALLY AWESOME!
Got lots of JW stories........our paths seemed to keep crossing

Take that. Maybe the Gayest band ever but I love this song, and I think Gary Barlow is a great songwriter and may be held back by his asociation with take that. He has written some really good songs.
When I was seventeen years old, I saw a fellow worker die. Electrocuted. An accident.
We gathered together afterwards and assessed what had happened. Everyone was in a state of shock, forgive the pun. I had never seen anybody die in front of me.
The company sent everybody home. I remember getting in the car and plugging in an 8 track tape, and this is the song that played:
You know how I roll. Mary Chapin Carpenter is one of my top all time performers. Such a strong voice, great words, you got the whole package. Much more than you ever see on YouTube. Some real rockers and some absolute tear jerkers and everywhere in between.
I'll be glad to assist. The Carpenters music meant a lot to me in my college days. My g/f and I would listen to these songs and well, you know. Anyway, this is one of my favorites.
Moving on, we have America. I met a guy from London one time in a bar and he said the very next time I was there to look him up and we'd go see America. It happened, it really did.
I swear to god the story about the guy from London is true. I never got the quirk about his wanting to meet me in England to see America until years later. I was dense.
Here's another interesting but little known fact about America. I listened to their 8 track tape that had Ventura Highway on it over and over and over while I read "The Exorcist". True.
Don't despair Collin Raye fans, I have not forgotten you.
In This Life
I've seen that look before, here comes that doubt again, you think that girl we saw was more than just a friend. Yes there was a time I thought she had it all, she meant the world to me back when the world was small. That was a river, this is the ocean.
Say what you want about Phil collins. I think he's brill. Maybe not quite as good as Peter Gabriel but still a great artist. I love this, from the lamb lies down on broadway album.
Nope. I'm only a partial idiot. She does read my articles though. Could the forums be far behind? Ruh roh. Nah, it's okay, I can fantasize, she knows I have my little crushes on certain women. Sade is one.
Oh yeah! Great song. And, best album cover of all time. I can still see it in my mind, that dark haired apparently naked babe covered with whipped cream. How I wanted to lick..
Oh please. Every single male actor who played a part in the following video should get an Academy Award For Unbelievable Performance in the Face of an Unbelievably Good Looking Woman Without Even Blinking.
I was fortunate to be at a convention where they had a "Rat Pack" group of impersonators. They were good! The guy that did the Sinatra numbers was primo.
I am a rock, I am an island. I have my books and my poetry to protect me. I am shielded in my armor. Hiding in my room, safe within my womb, I touch no one and no one touches me. I am a rock, I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries.
Not much comment necessary on this next S&G piece titled "Voices of Old People ". But listen to it. It's not a song. It is what it says it is. Towards the end "Are you happy? Are you happy here?", "If you mean, you could say yes, I was so happy and everybody 'What is this?"
"It's just so beautiful, like just a room. Your own room. In your own home".
Very sobering. I heard this when I was sixteen and I didn't know too much to make of it. I sure do now. Hope you do.
Even though I'm a slight metalhead I still have some taste.
The entire concert that this comes from absolutely rocks. You know, we used to laugh at our music teacher at school when he said as you age your music tastes also mature. Now I find I could listen to something like this all day long
The video that drove Charles Manson over the edge........
and now he's singing this....
and I am singing this...actually got the priviledge to see them live, yep Duane was there, circa 1971 (??? fuzzy memory there) in Tampa, FL. They freakin ROCKED!
Not a fan of David Letterman, nor of Blue Grass, but I'd have loved to have seen this live. Just a bunch of people at the top of their art playing. Doesn't get better than this.
Check out the drummer. ZOINKS!!!! At least I was surprised.
'twas pure fun to watch. When I came across this I was actually looking for some of Steve Martin's old comedy bits. He used the banjo in his act back in the 70s.
This one is purely personal. My mother-in-law used to sing this until her husband passed. This is for her and her family. I love this song too.
It's funny how a song can send you right back to a memory. |This is one of those ons for me. Up the rugby club after the game with the beer flowing and Pat settling everything down a bit later with this song. it really does bring a tear to my eye. Happy days
Here's one for you... I never heard this song until I watched the documentary film "Touching the Void". During one of Joe's many deliriums, he experiences a very strong reminiscence of a Boney M song, "Brown Girl in the Ring", a song he hated thoroughly; at one point he was thinking "bloody hell, I'm going to die to Boney M".
After I watched the film, I just had to check the song out for myself. Now it rolls around in my head at the most inopportune moments, lol! I must say though, it's kind of a catchy tune.
I ABSOLUTELY love this song. But I must admit I can't listen to it with out a tear in my eye. My daughter is at that age where she is about to fly the nest and this song just hits so many strings in my heart I just tear up, I know.......But I just can't help it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXXudCBmIDY this is a good example of a Kiowa medicine song, with good harmony and a fast pace. I guess I need to learn how to embed a youtube video too.
Tell me that's not a bank of blond Fender reverbs!......I burned a couple up using aluminum foil instead of fuses....God knows what they are worth today
OMG I never realised Cee lo Green was this good. But the guy is a phenomenon.
lets hope he starts to sing more bluse numbers. The guy asawsome, and don't forget Jools only alows LIVE music on his show.
Love his backers and band though, what a sexy group. Fantastic. Please watch all of the vid. When he sings "old Fashion" it sends tingles up my spine. Fantastic. Oh and I LOVE that suit.
Hers's a golden oldie from a band born in West Vancouver BC. They were a Led Zeppelin cover band when I saw them three years before this video in my high school gym during noon hour.
As you may gather I'm a Police/Sting fan. although the guy is a bit of a cock, although not as big a ock as Bono, there is no doubting the guy is a musical genius.
When I saw coldplay play this I was mesmerized .. but I was stoned then.
Aiiieeeee! Stop abusing your ears man and check out the real deal! (Radiohead). Coldplay shamelessly ripped em off, accept no substitute! (Singer Thom Yorke ranked 66 in Rolling Stones all time greatest singers list, for what that's worth).
Reckoner (live)....Dedicated to all Human beings
Nude (unbelievably great vocals)
Hot rock Minx-Goddess Polly Jean Harvey (PJ Harvey)
PJ Rocks me world, lol. Dynamite, very talented songstress and sex on legs (which never hurts!).
Mumford and Sons (best british band i've heard for years), The Avett Brothers (new to me as a bril but i love this track) and of course, Bob Dylan.. Musical beauty.
Nice one, Myrig, I didn't watch the Grammys, but seeing these guys playing together had to be the highlight of the night. Especially with the large amount of nominated fluff this year. Gotta love the Avetts and the Mumfords. And what can you say about Dylan, a guy who's nearly 70 years old, who tours constantly, and is prepared to nightly play a different set from a selection of more than 200 songs, all the while rearranging each song on the fly just for kicks. I don't know of anybody who can match that. The term "legend" seems less than appropriate.
This one always make me tear up knowing he passed away within a reatively short time of doing it. Less than a year if I remember correctly. I also remeber thinking how different he looked from what I remebered of him the first time I saw the video.
I think I posted this before, but I'll post it again, just in case. What a fantastic set this is, just brilliant, and it looks like pete is really enjoying himself. Fantastic.
When I started the first grade back in the early 70's the first friend I made was this girl named Susie. She had sandy blonde hair and green eyes. We were good friends. She also had a sister named Linda they both died three years later. This song was playing on the radio on the way to school that first day.
With all the other crap...that's here....what the heck
I now present one of my favorite songs I'd play for dancers with an attitude...unlike my my good twenty dollar bills with legs...errrmm girls
Complete Garbage music, but they usually got the point....especially when they went to my boss and complained about it and he'd tell them "Ohhh but babbyyyy, you don't like buttsexx?? I love this song!"
If they persisted to be "girl music critics" they'd get a dose of John Phillip Sousa or some Bagpipes (yep, true story) and then...with all my other girls and friends singing along they'd get this. AND usually halfway thru the song the bouncers would be escorting them out with the crowd cheering..no matter how hot they looked.
In the 80's and nineties being an "adult entertainment establishment" DJ was the most awesome, most politically uncorrect job you can imagine.....ESPECIALLY at age 45 ish...yep the ultimate midlife crisis golden parachute! I got out alive and desease free...by some freakin miracle...and a little brains I think. I treated it as a job ( I love well played music made by humans...with instruments) and just collected my CASH and the occaisional awesome fringe benefits as I progressed. After six years of it....I ran away. I hated where "music" was going. and I was just too old for the job.
Then... there were the sad ones...
Speaking of the Black Crow's, I actually had a BIG black dude come up and say I was a racist for even playing their music! I was really busy, this was my during "real glory days", I had like twenty five hot chicks, and honestly didn't give a flying fork about this guy's babble and told him to take it up with the management. Nahhhh.. he blamed it all on me. My DJ booth was 3 feet up and one foot lateral from the dancers dressing room door and he was already harassing the girls as they came out...and my bosses son, all of about 22 years of age, big, strong and loved to fight was always lurking at the front door there.
The guy put one hand on me and disappeared in a cloud of my friend, the bosses son, and a bunch of insane drunk dancers!!! I guess they arrested him in the ambulance...dunno was busy cueing up my next music...multiple (3) sony cd players...very low tech today.
Anyway loved that bar, and still do to this day. I haven't been their in a LONG time...BUT if any of you are ever in Daytona Beach, FL and have the urge to go "party" PM me...from what I hear my rep lives on. Imagine going to work and having a 3000+ watt RMS, all awesome speaker system jukebox that spits out really pretty girls when you play a song. It was a dirty job and I was the man to do it.
Who in the world would pour a bass clarinet, a violin, a xylophone, a trombone, guitar and keyboards into a soup, and have it come out as this interestingly creative masterpiece of a song? FRANK ZAPPA! That's who. The beginning sounds like a cacophony of confusion, and yet it's perfectly timed and performed.
Don't panic people, its just Punk Rock. The Ramones made it their own, the sex pistols never cared about what you 'think', and the Prodigy continued this proud tradition.
Innovate, or stagnate. The choice is yours, and yours alone.
Shariff don't like it.....How sad, Cry me a f*cking river. Meanwhile, for you're entertainment here is the ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS, They come brandishing the TRUSTY SWORD OF TRUTH, and we will have satisfaction.
V. Vendetta. You cannot stop us, for we are LEGION.
Here is Nick Drake, check him out. He plays sad songs but they are always from the heart, and that's all that matters to me (PLAY FROM YOUR F*CKING HEART!!!*Bill Hicks*)
Some great stuff Cavu and Co (Soup boyo, have seen Adele live and aye she's very good )
Some Polly Jean Harvey goodness (she rocks) and she's hotter than the Sun in my humble opinion.
Been listening to this album a lot lately, one of the greatest Soul records of all time in my opinion....live Chicago gig by the Marvelous Marvin Gaye....
I was definitely born in the wrong era lol, I've just turned 35 and maybe I'm a wee bit younger than some here.....about half of my record collection is 60's/70's! I also have a vinyl 'Chess Records' collection about 2 feet high, priceless and not for sale at any offer....I don't care if you're Bill Gates...some things can't be bought.
Heard this on the radio a few weeks ago and it reminded me what a great record Joni Mitchells 'Blue' really is....This is one of the happier ones and always puts me a good mood. We've had some sun in Blighty man.....Happy days!
'All I want' Joni Mitchell. Voice of an Angel, and I dig that Dulcimer.
Another great track from 'Songs in the Key of Life', some life affirming positivity from the err, 'Wondrous' Stevie Wonder.
'Saturn' (supposed to be 'Saggenaw' I believe originally)
You might like this 'rare groove' classic wheels, the Pointer Sisters 'Don't it drive you crazy'. Don't be deceived by the crap album cover, it was actually very 'edgy' for its time. Funky as hell, amazing that they started out Gospel.
Time for some 'Van the Man', from the eponymous 'Astral Weeks'....Great stuff.
Moving on to more modern times, the Pixies, with 'Debaser' live....they rock and have influenced many musicians. Class act.
Check this singer songwriter out, he's the real deal IMO....'The Verve's Richard Ashcroft, solo songs. Quality.
A classic from Bristol's 'Massive Attack', with one of the greatest Soul vocals from Shara Nelson I've ever heard. She Kills it live too, Sublime.
How many people actually listen to these tunes anyway? You never know till you try.
Enjoy! (or not, as the case may be.......but this selection is the dogs bollocks, I tells ye! )
Edit: oops, nearly forgot....I'm sorry but if you don't like this song then you can never, ever be in my gang. She's the bomb.
Take it away, Sister Re.
ADDENDUM How Long is a piece of string?
Aye. What's not tae love?
Hehehehe....NOTHING CAN STOP ME........FOR I AM DRUNK!!!!
My mobo died and I got a bad replacement part, and now I am back doing the Devil's work in the evil oilfields of the Gulf of Mexico, hopefully semi-nonstop for the next few months.
OMFG. Wheels that is just so sad. I remember this POS. LOL Only the UK could have a song like this in the top 10, if not number 1. But then if you look back through this thread you will find rene and renates - shut upa your face, which kept ultravox's vienna off the number 1 spot.
"Disco Duck" became a nationwide hit in the United States by September 1976. On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, it peaked at number one on October 16, 1976, for one week, held the number-two spot for the following four weeks and remained in the Top 10 for a total of ten weeks.
Can always count on you, wheels! Now, play more music bud!
I was out looking for some and trying to come up with tonights theme. Last night it was the Rat Pack, Sammy, Dean and Frank. In a half an hour I have to watch the "Big Bang Theory" though. I'm too old for her but Kaley Cuoco is cute as a button.
Wheels is on a Pointer Sisters Tip, no doubt . They went a bit dodgy in the 80's IMO (who didn't, Stevie Wonder included lol) , but a class act nonetheless.
Beautiful song here, beautiful because it is in my considered opinion The Truth. This is my Truth, now tell me yours.
Something a wee bit more upbeat, since we've had some nice weather recently . Never fails to cheer me up, harmonies from Heaven from the Beach boys, ('Pet Sounds' is one of the greatest records of all time, I'll argue with anyone over that. You have been warned. :D)
Speaks for itself, really. I and I, we multiply. Take it away, Bob.
According to me Mother, I used to sing this constantly in the bath when I was around 6 years old....LOL! I don't give a flying Eff if its 'cool' or not, its a frikkin great song. I used to think that 'Wichita' was just around the corner. Turns out its in Kansas, or something? It's not where you are from man, It's where you're at.
To perhaps save my musical reputation, here's something velveteen.
Do we have any drunks in the audience this evening? Richard Thompson, a great singer-songwriter IMO, listen and learn.
Any 'dead heads' in the house? I'll call back later, you crazy kids.
Sorry I had to post this. This was probably the first time I saw bowie, on the old grey whistle test. Five years from the Diamond Dogs Album. FANTASTIC.
If a song could ever conjure up a feeling of being there with the cold winds and rough seas, Gordon's classic would be the song. I get a chill when I hear the opening strains. The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald is a great song.

Well, you can try this too......'The Waters of Tyne'. Folk song from round me way.
A just posted a song list (which I put me Heart and Soul into) which for some disappeared. Ah well. Stoop and build them up anew.
Dynamite.
The Auteurs 'Junk Shop Clothes' (great Lyrics, must listen.)
Nuff said.
Enjoy!
*Note to the Unbelievers, I just got 'Un-Raptured' to bring these tunes to you.*
*Vanishes into the Rapture-Ether...like Casper the friendly Music Ghost*
EDIT: Love this Song, Brothers n' Sista's
Hulls finest. Hull 4. London O.
Too Many Florence Nightingales....Not enough Robin Hood's......
+1 for early Pearl Jam. Prefer Nirvana though....cos that wuz the place I was sent to on Saturday. There was I, watching a movie, sitting down and munching on a packet of popcorn....then BOOM!!! I WUZ RAPTURED!!! Teleported to another dimension, by Father Odin or something (lawl), and then I beheld an Angelic Choir, led by some bird from the 80's or something......Can't remember her name; DAMN THE LIGHT WAS SO INTENSE!!!! Then I came back to this world, very much Un-Raptured. But I must share the joy I felt that day with you all, Brothers and Sisters. AMEN!!!
Im back to being dead now. As per usual. Bah.
Love.
Prize to anyone who spots the Beefheart tribute in this song. PJ Harvey.
RIP Kurt, great artist.
Classic. Any former boxers or fans in the house by the way? Used to Spar when I was a kid at Newcastle's Cruddas Park, makes a Man of ye. Better at Rugger though, focused on that.
I have to say this is THE best post on SimHQ. I have just gone back through the first 30 pages of this thread and I have to say they are utterly fantastic. I would suggest that everyone does the same, or at least goes back a few pages. The quality, depth, breadth and shear amount of music within it is mind boggling. I would ask you all (if you have made a contribution to this thread) to just go back at least a few pages and just enjoy what you have posted nd actually listen to what the other guys have posted. I didn't know maybe half of the songs the others posted posted on this thread. but going back and listening to them, I realise it was #%&*$# awsome.
I hope you will do this, as it is most enjoyable. And educational

SD
+ A ridiculous number, soup.
I have made an effort to plough this thread and unearth its Musical gems (just cut the surface), give peoples musical taste a chance and who knows you might be surprised. We know these songs already ourselves (obviously). Its not why the discerning music fan is here. If they have anything about them, they want to hear something new. Cheers to Piper for that Allman Brothers Elizabeth gig, phlucking brilliant and I am 'hearing' you the most. Wheels and yerself aren't so bad either....'Doves' are not bad at all, like 'Elbow' too.
Point being, you never know till you try. You don't like it? Thats Ok, as long as you listened. All music fans will give music a chance. Some are keepers, some you just say 'no thanks, not my cup of tea' but cheers anyway. For my part, here is where I stand. I have yet to hear anything as beautiful as morning Birdsong, something so wondrous that Mozart himself could never capture, and never will. But with that being said, its all good. Make an effort, I think I'm saying. Yeah.
'For the Lulz'.....'Captain Beefheart and His Magical Band' with.....I'm gonna Booglarize You (some nutter will no doubt appreciate it..... )
Right, seriously. Triple bill. Liverpools 'The La's' live and acoustic. Fantastic band IMO who know what music is all about. A Melody chord unwinds me, the rhythm of life unties me.....Yeah...sing it La'.
That song is probably me to a T....lol.
More Scalleys, watch yer hub caps lads (lol).
Echo and the Bunnymen....'Lips like Sugar', great tune. U2? Never heard of em.
'Faith no More' with Lionel Richies 'Easy like Sunday Morning'....Good version.
I reckon thats yer whack for now. The arms of Morpheus beckon lol....I'm gannin tae kip.

Point being, you never know till you try. You don't like it? Thats Ok, as long as you listened. All music fans will give music a chance. Some are keepers, some you just say 'no thanks, not my cup of tea' but cheers anyway.
That's the only reason this thread exists! Play on.
btw Biggles, you kinda rubbed me the wrong way back when I posted some Coldplay (and I like them), but you turned me onto RadioHead. I wasn't a fan then, am now.

Heehee, me too. Always loved it when Jerry and the boys sang about the ladies. Here's a selection or two from a few shows I attended in the late eighties and early nineties. First up is several selections of an old favorite.
Brings back a flood of memories. It's odd and kind of cool how music can stir old memories. Over the past few months I've been slowly digging through my collection of bootleg recordings and concert memorabilia. Well, the other day I finally made it to the Grateful Dead box, knowing that I was in store for some more sweet memories of days past. The first tape I pulled out of the box was from Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin, July 17th 1989. This night was likely one of the best Dead shows I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few. Here's some video from the opening, and from the ending of the show.
The goodness continued, unabated, for another two nights. Many Dead fans felt that this night was the beginning of the end for the band, "Downhill From Here" they called it, which is the title of the DVD this video is pulled from. An apt name for the story I'm going to tell, at least for my friend, Jack; for me it was more of a major milestone in my life, a sort of "before the flood" thing.
It was a fun trip up to America's Jerryland that summer, I was there with my best friend, Jack. In hindsight, I was grateful (pardon pun) that I took this trip with Jack because he didn't live to see another July. Come this July 1st, he will have been gone for 21 years. It was basically because of knowing Jack that I developed such an avid interest in music, art, and food/cooking; the man was wildly talented in all three disciplines. After so many years, the scars from Jack's untimely passing have healed quite nicely; though they can still be painful from time to time. I am a better and more well rounded person for having known him, and a better person because of the many ways his death changed me and my outlook on life. The inscription on his tombstone is from "We Bid You Goodnight." "Lay down my dear brother, lay down and take your rest..."

Just.....this. *Nah, there is just summat in me eye.....Honest to Goodness.*
" "Lay down my dear brother, lay down and take your rest..."
Last time I mentioned that many Dead fans thought the band went downhill after 1989. I don't necessarily feel that way. I liked the band that emerged after Brent Mydland's death, with Vinny Welnick & Bruce Hornsby on keyboard/piano...the sound was nice and fat. An example here with the guys playing "Deal," they are joined by Branford Marsalis. 9/10/91 MSG, New York
I've never been to see the current Dead lineup (my last Dead show was also Jerry Garcia's last), but I hear they are pretty awesome...I'll probably go see them some time, it's on my bucket list to do so. Here's a taste of "Loose Lucy." 7/23/04 St. Louis, MO
Here's a sad song from my hometown. This was right after Jack died, and this song was one of his favorites, a fitting tribute I thought. I still cry every time I see or hear this. 7/6/90 OCS, Louisville, KY
The last year of his life, Jerry Garcia started occasionally playing one of my favorite Dylan songs. Two nice examples here, the second is from the last two shows he ever played. 3/18/95 The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA 7/8/95 Soldier Field, Chicago, IL
I've been to a lot of shows, but never (unfortunately) saw the Dead.
Very cool hearing of your goings there Vault!
I haven't seen them since 1995, but I hear from reliable sources that they still put on one of the best live shows out there. I stopped counting at 50 shows, but I'm pretty sure I saw them over 100 times between 1983 and 1995. A great way to travel about and see the US and Canada, it was kinda like going to camp in the summertime, only alot more wierd.
Yep, I'm a huge Clapton fan, he's third on my list as far as number of times I've seen any given act, behind the Dead and Bob Dylan. The shows he did with Steve Winwood were awesome, I saw them in Cincy and Indianapolis last July.
I have also seen Phil Lesh and friends a few times since I last went to any Dead shows. These have all been good too, the "and friends" part is always loaded with a revolving set of wildly talented musicians.
Alright, that TUIB has got my memory racing. The Dead covered tons of Dylan, this is one of my favorites also from the nine show MSG run in '91...Branford Marsalis sits in. MSG 9/10/91 New York, NY
Can't really think about Dylan without thinking about The Band. One of my favorites, the first the original from "The Last Waltz." The other two are from July 1990, a scant few weeks after Jack's death. "The Weight" was one of his favorites. The Tinley Park show was Brent Mydland's last, he died just a matter of weeks after this show. Sound is better in 480p Deer Creek 7/18/90 Noblesville, IN WMT 7/23/90 Tinley Park, IL
For some reason this all reminded me of the night Barney the Dinosaur sat in playing bass with the Dead on April Fools day in 1993. Probably the most fun of the many trips to NY we made. We returned home to find our house cat had given birth that night, 2 boys, 2 girls. Their names were Barney, Aiko, China, and Schrödinger. Schrödinger still lives with me, she turned 18 last April Fools day. Nassau Coll. 4/1/93 Hempstead/Uniondale, NY
The convoy begins toward "Flagtown" (Flagstaff, Arizona) at night on June 6 on "I-one-oh" (I-10) just outside "Shakytown" (Los Angeles, California, due to its earth tremors).
Wheels, you are on a dynamic roll , and I for one don't want to stop that 'Flow', which is why I came up with this. I can't stop that tide of terrific tunes, just need to give it a new direction.
I was hearing King Conley, 'Sista Re', and of course Otis......and I'm thinking, 'Do I need I firewall for my mind? This Jive ass MuthaF*cka be reading it!!!' LOL!!!!
RARE....and that means RARE as in 'Feel the Funk Y'all' rare. I have this on vinyl. Mint condition. NOT FOR SALE AT ANY PRICE (AND WORTH A PRETTY PENNY), BECAUSE SOMETHINGS (BELIEVE IT OR NOT) CANNOT BE BOUGHT.
Sylvia Striplin, Enjoy.
I you can't feel it, than I cannot help you. That is all.
Wheels, you play a lot.....But ye don't really listen now, do ye? You must have been a f*cking nightmare in Basic. I'm a young 35, alright I'm a nipper....
Just an observation. I played that tune cos I thought 'Wheels might like it'.
Aye?. Nay?.
Wheels doesn't even bother his arse to respond. How very rude. Quite contrary to the rules of Funky Harmony.
Shame on you.
Anyways, here's a nice and true song. 'Ode to my family' by the Cranberries. Those who have ever experienced deprivation will understand. Life goes on. Cream always rises to the top.
Down and out, in SimHq.
Have it your way then lol.
Nevermind. Olivers Army is on its way......with the Boys from the Mersey and the Thames and the Tyne.
'Broken Homes', By 'Tricky' (of 'Massive Attack' fame) featuring PJ Harvey. Nice Gospel themes going on. Great art. Hallelujah.

I despise Lawlessness, and let it be know that I am on the side of the Law.
That said, when the Law is an Ass.........
Note tae all and sundry, when I wuz growing up, I wanted tae be a Pirate. That probably explains a lot, but at least I am honest. Which is more than can be said for certain persons in this world, if ye knaa what I mean.
Cold, Cold, Heart. What is wrong with these People? If you don't like this Song, then I am Sorry, But you are INHUMANE That's it. End of.
Lets ask 'Aslan's' opinion then, shall we? Metaphor. For those who are in the Know, ASLAN IS THE ANOINTED ONE, THE CHRIST, THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA, THE FIRST AND THE LAST....TEH BEGINNING AND THE END.
Back from the vault once again. Last weekend I spent a little time with Jack's stepmom at my favorite local watering hole. It was an odd night, but it brought back some good memories, and helped to further cement the past to my present & future. Still thinking of that July in America's Jerryland. A good montage of highlights from that trip which haven't been posted yet. These shows were awesome.

This one's for my kitty, Schrödinger, the one who was born on April Fools Day in 1993; the night Barney the Dinosaur sat in on bass with the band. She doesn't have much time before she's...well...
This one's for you Schröder, and your now deceased siblings, China, Aiko, & Barney...
For most of my life, I've judged bands by how they sound live. This is mostly due to my older brother and his impressive collection of Zeppelin bootlegs. It's what started me on a long career of my own brand of bootlegging. I was only 9 years old when Zeppelin did this 5 show run at Earls Court, I've heard the recordings many times, but I still wish I was there to see it.
A replay, but my favorite Stones tune is Gimme Shelter, and this (from their '73 tour) is THE best version I've ever heard! Taylor really made that band.
Hey SD, ever sit back and look at all the great music in your thread? Pretty cool.
Yes I do mate. Quite often I will spend an evening going back through this thread to listen to the music you guys have posted. I have posted on here somewhere that everyone should at some point just go back through this thread and listen to ALL the fantastic music in it. Some of it is not to my taste, some of it I love, but ALL of it is bloody brilliant. if I had a soundtrack to my life it would all be in this thread, probably
So once again people I would ask you to look through this thread an take a listen to ALL of the tracks in it, some of them have really suprised me, some bands I had not even heard of produce some outstanding songs, and if not for this thread I would have missed them.
Great thread keep it up fellas. And thanks for posting all this great music, it really is an outstanding thread.
I like the lyrics to most of her songs, very empowering to young ladies, my daughter included. A bit of a shame she needs to include swearing into some of them , but it seems to be the norm nowerdays.
Never guessed you for a Pink fan SD! I like her too!
LOL it's funny but I think, lyrically she is one of the best female artists performing at the moment. she;s billiant and im not ashamed to say so.
this would be a good example. I like pink as she can't stand all these Rich Vacuous girls who aspire to marry into money/fame i think she's a good role model for the young modern girl. enjoy
I was trying to find the original and found Roy's version. Man, it's good.
One of the pioneers of the telecaster sound, he was noted for his use of note bending, volume swells, staccato runs and "pinch" harmonics. He is considered by many to be one of America's most soulful guitar masters, and even 20 years after his death, he maintains an army of devoted fans, including some of rock guitar's greatest (just ask Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson or Billy Gibbons). This performance, captured on the ACL stage on November 15, 1976, shows Roy Buchanan in his prime at the age of 37. Indeed, it may well be the best high-quality audio/video recording of his complete performance known to exist.
That was awesome Parker! Wish you'd post more music.
ps actually had to google "pinch" harmonics. thanks for that!
We both seem to have good/similar tastes. Being a guitar player (born in 62) I really love coming across great youtube stuff. Its usually by accident too...looking for something else at the time.
Nice, it's still hard to believe that Carlos was just a kid at this point in his career. There's no way I could have played in front of a crowd that size when I was a self-conscious teenager.

I knew he looked young in that video but I didn't think about how young.
Been liking these guy's sound for a while now. Saw them with Robbie Robertson. They were in town earlier this month, doing the release party for their 2nd record at one of our local independent record stores. Here's a live selection from a show in DC.
Another band I've enjoyed seeing a few times. I remember seeing the Garza brothers perform the first time, it must have been 7 years ago, at one of the free Waterfront Wednesday events put on by my city's PRP. It was shortly before their 1st record dropped, and their promo had been getting a lot of play on one of our PRP music stations. I was blown away, and am still blown away every time I see this trio. I love the "Texican" sound, and I like to think that Stevie Ray is smiling in heaven whenever they play. Here's some video from a show in Austin, TX.
Another musician & song writer that I miss dearly. Mr. Zevon is number six on my list, as far as number of times I've seen any act. From a BBC broadcast, Christmas 1994. I've made a point of enjoying every sandwich since your passing...
"...after a long day of improbable & grotesque mischief..."
The first time I saw Mr. Zevon perform this tune was in '92 at Bogarts in Cincy, he opened the show with it. It ended up being the version of "Splendid Isolation" that appeared on the "Learning to Flinch" album. "LtF" was a live Zevon album, featuring completely solo versions of his tunes from venues across the globe. Those were always the best Zevon shows, the ones with just Warren, the guitar, the piano, & a bottle of Jim Beam...like it was that night. This version is with a backing band, it's from the Night Music TV show.
"...after a long day of improbable & grotesque mischief..."
Words to live by Vault, those words will set you free.
Quality as per usual (Did I really post a Dolly Parton Song in some drunken moment of sincerity?) Gaaahh, WTF is wrong with me? Ah, feck it. Publish and be damned.
There aint no cure for Love.
First, we take Manhattan, then we take 1c. (Private joke)
The la's do some skiffle.
PJ Harvey of whom Byron wished he had wrote.....She walks in Beauty, like the night, of cloudless climes and starry skys
She's f*cking Dynamite Ladies and Gents, and this is a beautiful song. Listen. Trust me. Your ears (and eyes) will thank you for it.
"...after a long day of improbable & grotesque mischief..."
Words to live by Vault, those words will set you free.
Warren Zevon's long friendship with Hunter S. Thompson is quite apparent in that statement.
It definitely spoke to me when first I heard it. HST grew up in the same Louisville, KY neighborhood that I live in. It's an oddly diverse neighborhood which I've noticed has a tendency to produce totally gonzo libertarian types like HST...I should know, I happen to be one of them.
vault_dweller, you keep telling cool stories like that and I'll have to go back and re-read the whole HST collection. Might even give _The Electrical Koolaid Acid Test_ another go. Nothing to do with it, but it started me off way back when.
ps my times in Louisville were few, but great! Which part were you referring to?
The Highlands neighborhood, in the Cherokee Triangle area. The house he lived in is still standing, and the current owners are real cool about its legacy. When HST died, a little memorial shrine spontaneously sprung up from the locals stopping by. They left it there for a week or so. HST attended a number of area schools, Bloom Elementary, Highland Middle, Atherton High, and Male High (which was a traditional school at the time, located nearby in the city). IMO, he is one of Louisville's finest sons.
And now back to more pleasant memories from the mostly fun past...
A Little Village...
And take me even further back...
LMFAO!!!!
Introducing 'Old Gregg', just for the Lulz. Its funny man, I am a Briton, Trust me.
PS Vault, just keep on doing what you do best.....'Desolation Row' A very sad and solemn song of lament. Although her eyes, are fixed upon, Noah's great Rainbow........
I just dug a wee bit deeper, and found some of teh lyrics.
Now Ophelia, she’s ’neath the window For her I feel so afraid On her twenty-second birthday She already is an old maid To her, death is quite romantic She wears an iron vest Her profession’s her religion Her sin is her lifelessness And though her eyes are fixed upon Noah’s great rainbow She spends her time peeking Into Desolation Row
The Feats, hellz yeah! I was thinking about them today. One of my older brothers is a huge fan of the Feats. He was admitted to the hospital today with a collapsed lung, looks like he's going to be okay...this one's for you, bro'.
Most of the time I will look for the unknown artists, to me, on the list and then I listen to them on YouTube and if I like them a lot I start looking for more of their tunes.
I've never heard that version though I know it existed. That was a great clip, wheels. I'm used to the Larry Carlton version from ~ '86.
edit: EXISTED not EXITED. Duh!
Glad you liked it.
Something that is amazing me more than anything while looking for song clips is what is uploaded to YouTube. There have been very few songs, no matter how obscure, that I haven't found some version of it uploaded.
BUT, That vid was bloody fantastic. OMG. What a shame the boys split up. They could have been the next best thing, certainly for me , I #%&*$# love TFF.
Glad I'm hitting the road for the next two weekends. I need to get away for a little time with old traveling buds & some musical therapy. ABB doing Midnight Rider at one of the many Beacon shows.
Speaking of the road, my mind keeps returning to this night, 4/1/93, it is one of my happier memories. Just learned the guy we stayed with passed away a couple years ago. Besides Barney the Dinosaur playing bass with the band, the other highlight was the encore, the Beatles' "Rain." No video on this one, just the soundtrack...though I thought I'd share a picture.
When the rain comes, they run and hide their heads. They might as well be dead...
Some more Dead just because I feel like it, and the songs fit my uneasy mind...uneasy because of a woman of all things. Don't she know I'm too old for these games?
Test me, test me Why don't you arrest me? Throw me in the jail house 'til the sun goes down 'til it go down
I had to move Really had to move That's why if you please I am on my bended knees Bertha don't you come around here anymore
The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will...
This is where all the muso's hang out, no doubt about it. Love the Dead, and Vault man....great versions. Cheers. A broken Heart is the worst fecking thing that can ever be inflicted upon a Man, we've all been there....been through that. Point being, aye....Took me 3 years to recover. I know.
This was my 'break up' song, after cohabiting for 7 years (living in sin, I know...lol. Oh Lord have Mercy)
She was a firebrand. No doubt that is why I loved her so much, little Spitfire, with a worse temper than me. That's saying something. Always was a sucker for a Lass with a wee bit fire in her belly. Chalk and cheese, and never the twain shall meet. Happy times too though, and I remember em well. No animosity, amicable parting. If you've ever really loved someone though, you Always will.
I feel almost guilty posting this, but life goes on Vault.......and Jesus Christ look at those pins!
Hope you and her can somehow work it out Vault, otherwise just cut loose man. Best wishes.....sincerely.
Right, this is just a flying 'drive by' visitation, and I haven't really thought it out.
Hmmmm. I do love this song though. 'Ocean Colour Scene' from Brummieland with 'The Circle'. For all those who ever grew up on a sh*thole sink estate, watching the world go by....this ones for you. It's genuine, and from the heart. Great vocals and lyrics too, and the band (though not a big fan generally) put a lot of more successful bands to shame with the quality of their musicianship. It's acoustic. Acoustic jams are real as Piper will tell ye.
I'll leave ye with this, doesn't make much 'sense' (quite deliberately).....and paradoxically it sums the journey all up. Stream of consciousness, the Human Condition.
Thanks, Biggles & piper, "complicated" seems to be the only relationships I'm able to develop with women. This one was especially so, and I went into it knowing that it might end up being too much for me to handle. I knew I needed to be prepared to walk away, and that seems to be what's happening. No worries though, as I mentioned, I'll be on the road the next two weekends with some old touring buddies. We'll be taking in some shows here in KY and up in Chicago. That sort of thing always sets my mind aright, it never fails.
Felt like some more Petty & the Heartbreakers. There's a nice featured show at Wolfgang's Vault from the Winterland back in '78. The link will take you to "American Girl," but you can watch the entire show from there. Video's a little grainy but the sound is real good. Enjoy.
I was going through the 50's and 60's thread again and came across this post by 20mm. Stunned is how I would describe how I feel about what has happened to Tom so I thought this one was fitting.

This is what played
I am still thinking about you and praying for you Tom. I am also hoping and praying that I hear that you are making great strides with your recovery.
The tracks "The World's on Fire", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", and "Incense and Peppermints" are all featured in the motion picture Psych-Out, along with a new song; "Pretty Song from Psych-Out", which appeared on the band's second album Wake Up...It's Tomorrow.

Been taking in some shows over the past few weeks, some much needed therapy. Caught Steely Dan at the Palace on the 17th, these guys always put on a great show. They closed the show with this old favorite.
I saw this group play at the Raleigh, Guinness & Oyster festival circa 1990'ish. I was very drunk. And that very well could be me shouting in the background. I thought the blonde was hot.
Here's a bit of TTB from the Chicago Theater...been seeing a variety of shows over the past few weeks, and this show was the final leg of my musical therapy tour. Shot from the crowd, but you'll get the idea...an 11 piece band sounding very hot. Really happy to see some video posted already, it was a very good show.
Freakin' outstanding. I can't stress this enough, if these folks come to your town, definitely go see them, you will not be disappointed. It was worth the drive to Chicago for sure. Can't wait to see them again, they'll be playing Louisville on Sept 24th, and I've already got my 4th row tickets.
This is Johnny Cash, with an 'Alice in Chains' cover, which he typically performs with absolute brilliance. All the more poignant if you know anything about Johnny cash. He walked the Line.
Slim Harpo. Shake yo hips!
Music, man. Whats not tae love?
PS It's actually a 'Nine Inch Nails' cover, *facepalm* I was listening to 'Alice' the other night, it threw me off. Daft b*stard that I am.
Johnny Cash was always a favorite of mine Biggles. The first time I saw the "Hurt" video I was shocked at how much he had deteriorated from what I remembered. IIRC he didn't live more than a year year and a half after that video was released.
Excellent choices there, piper. Being a huge Dylan fan, I am by default a big fan of the Band too.
And the Decemberists are big in my city, everybody I know seems to really love their material. They played this spring at our fabulous Iroquois Amphitheater, it was quite a night with Justin Townes Earle opening the show. One thing I really appreciate about the Decemberists (besides the music of course), is their tradition of having a unique poster bill for each show. Usually the posters are made by local artists. I've got a little collection of them. Here's the one from the Louisville show in April.
Don't know why, but this seems like a good follow up...couldn't resist, it's a HST tribute.
I called up my friend LeRoy on the phone I said, Buddy, I'm afraid to be alone I got some weird ideas in my head About things to do in Denver when you're dead...
LeRoy says there's something you should know Not everybody has a place to go And home is just a place to hang your head And dream of things to do in Denver when you're dead...
I guess these days I'm more of a Worrier King. Another interesting tale told at the beginning of this one.
I'm hiding from the mailman And I hate to hear the telephone ring I'm hiding from the mailman And I hate to hear the telephone Worried about the women And I worry about everything And I worry when I see my subjects Bow down to the Worrier King
I've been up all night Wondering what tomorrow's gonna bring I've been up all night Wondering what the morning's gonna bring...
Wheels (and you KNOW I love ye man ) but you are spamming so hard that it's hard to find anyones recommendations, but yours? Most proper music fans have heard em all before anyway.
Any one worth his salt......ye get the picture.
I'm just demoralised, that's whats what.
A. Why bother? B. It will just be 'spammed out' by Wheels C. Aye. This is true.
Wheels, I'm kidding man. Love and respect your input. But, y'know.....
PS Piper, I finally got a possible reason for your name.....Love early Floyd too!
Syd was the true Piper though. I'm sure you'd agree.
Such a shame he lost his marbles, a sensitive Soul and the world was a better place that he was in it.
I grew up in 'Walker', Newcastle Upon Tyne.....Trial by f*cking fire, but I'm still here. Eric Burdon sung about it once. Nay, twice. 'We've gotta get out of this place'. That's where he was from too.
Still, there's no place like home. True, and I still miss it, believe it or not.
No you're not. Some of us demi-Celt mutts like dancing on tables to a good aul jig too. He was right about Nickelback though. STEP SLOWLY AWAY FROM THE NICKELBACK, WITH YOUR HANDS SO WE CAN SEE EM.
The Jesus and Mary Chain with 'Reverance', fecking rocks.....great band and criminally underrated. Not by 'Rolling stone' though, least they had the decency to name 'Psychocandy' as one of the best LP's of all time.
Really like this guy, Jose Gonzalez. Superb Classical guitarist, with great finger picking technique.
Didn't have to look too far for this bands songs......Always in my heart. 30 yrs, thanks for the music and the memories REM. I can't really choose a 'favourite', depends upon mood and possibly the gravitational/tidal influence of the moon. F*ck knows, lol. 'Country Feedback', with a little 'Dylan' improv too. 'Murmur' was and has always been my favourite record though, but each to their own.
(PS Piper, Loved 'Timeless Melody', I posted the exact same vid on this thread a while back, great minds think alike. )
Something to 'ogle'. There aint no wrong in 'ogling' lol.....Great Jam too. Take it away, PJ.
Wheels is back, & with some appropriate music for the day!
Also love the Zappa, piper.
Just wanted to report that things are going well in the vault. The musical therapy sessions have continued, unabated. My concert calendar has me stopping in Nashville, Asheville, and NYC before the end of the year (Warren Haynes Band; then 2 nights with the Mule, Lesh & Friends, Los Lobos, Bela Fleck...more TBA; and then 2 more nights of the Mule @ the Beacon on Dec 30th & New Years Eve). Halloween and a big costume ball coming up too.
These are for my old friend, Darla, who passed away last night after a long battle with leukemia. There's not many of us left from the old crew...
7/17/89 AVMT, East Troy, WI
The summer of 1990 was a difficult time for all of us, but I'll never forget our trip to Deer Creek that year. It was middle America, middle of the night, corn to my left and soy beans to the right. However silly it all was; it felt, for a moment, that everything was going to be alright. Now it's 21 years later and everything is alright. Thanks for sharing the road with me...RIP, my dear friend, you will be missed.
7/18/90 Deer Creek, Noblesville, IN
...you know she's the only one; Who left me here with her regards for everyone.
After my son decided that he wanted a bit more bass out of my home cinema I have just recalibrated it and been listening to Pachelbel Canon Acoustica again, it is so mellow and relaxing
...Psyclone Jack Hallucinating Hack Thinks that Donna Reed Eats dollar bills Goldfoot's machine Creates another fiend So Beautiful, They make you kill...
Some good stuff here chaps....it will take me a week to trawl through em (and I do...believe it or not lol)
'Play it again Sam' AKA Piper and thanks for bringing this to me attention....Long time J.A. fan, fantastic version and good to see them well and healthy...Particularly Duff in his cameo, been there man. Saw them live a few times in the 90's and.....more on this later haha.
Janes Addiction....with 'Jane Says', saved me life I tells ye. Cheers Piper.
I'm feeling a distinct lack of 'Funk' in the Force, of late. Fear not. Biggles got teh antidote.
Take it away, Curtis May (field, unwieldy).
Always sends shivers down me spine....'Scarborough fair', an English Folk song which as far as I'm concerned is timeless. Played by a Swedish lad called Per Olov. A beautiful interpretation, he is a gifted classical guitarist.
Love this too.......Bill Withers is very underrated imo.....
Enjoy! (if you bother yer arse to listen to them....which you probably won't...lol)
I was 10 or 11 when the song first came out and for several years I thought that the "Edmund Fitzgerald" had sank in the 1800's. The thought of a modern ship sinking in the Great Lakes during my lifetime didn't even cross my mind.
Here's something a bit different, but nice to listen to.
Nice, piper, love a family that jams together, especially with such a fine selection of instruments (love the dobro). The last ten years or so I've been going to mostly acoustic shows, bluegrass fests and whatnot; it may be different, but it still jams.
Here's another cool cover; from Austin City Limits, S. Tedeschi doing John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery" (with a brief allusion to "Sugaree"). I remember seeing her do this tune at Xmas Jam in 1999, definitely looking forward to this year's Jam.
That same year at Xmas Jam, the Derek Trucks Band did a nice instrumental version of Bob Marley's "Rastaman Chant." Here's some good video of the same from 2004.
More Richard Thompson, just because I've not heard it in a while...thanks for reminding me, iPod shuffle.
Yay! Big RT fan too Vault, I actually posted this song on this thread many moons ago, but deserves a re-run methinks. "God Loves a Drunk'. Deep man.
This band really should have more listeners....'Grant Lee Buffalo' with 'Dixie drug store' and 'Jupiter and Teardrop', very good stuff....'Americana' vibe. The lyrics to D.D.S. are particularly good, I do like a good story in a song. They are great live too.
One of my all time fave guitarists Peter Green with 'Baby when the sun goes down', love that tone.
Warren Haynes Band really kicked it last night at the Marathon Music Works in Nashville. It was the venue's very first show, hope to see more acts of this quality there. It was the best $25 show I've seen in a very long time.
Here's some pretty good crowd shot video of the intro.
11/15/11 MMW, Nashville, TN
Pics of the marquee, the encore, and the all-important ticket stub
That's former ABB member, Jack Pearson, on the right.
This is a very sad, very well crafted song. 'Brick' by 'Ben folds five'....tragic song matter but these things must be heard, methinks. All part of lifes rich pageant.
Don't care what anyone says, this is life affirmingly fecking brilliant.
Play it again, Sam.
Great band, great acoustic version. 'The Mayor of Simpleton'....lol.
Loved that Shuggie Jam Piper, good stuff. Any Johnny Winter fans in the house?
Here is a great upcoming talent, Englands Laura Marlin with 'My Manic and I'....folkie. Live from St Pauls Church (yeah, lol) Picadilly London.
Like what I've heard from this Nashville Tennessee duo too, 'The Civil Wars', with 'Barton Hollow'...good tune. The gal (Joy Williams) along with having great musical talent is.....'very easy on the eye'. I have no idea what the blokes called, and I don't care either, lol. Hehehe.
Hot legs! Enjoy.
(Its John Paul White btw....he's good too lol)
EDIT: PS 'Big Up' to Parker on that Mansfield redoux, that was some Funky sh*t (I know the track, all funky ass people do lol )
Wait till I hit you with some proper 'Northern Soul', but more on this later.
Thats it. I own up. Pssstt....I'm a secret rap fan.
I admire this fellows Pluck. Emotional honesty, Genuine Passion, deft linguistic and lyrical ability. Punk rock in fact, if you've listened to his earlier stuff.
No musical boundaries for me, 'eclectic'. Only good and bad, in my book. I believe this to be a force for Good.
Words, of course...... have their music too.
Cheer up though.....'The suns gonna shine on everything you do'
Instant Karma. Hare Krishna. Allelujah. Praise the Lord, natural Mystic. The Kingdom of God is within you.
Had to sneak this in. The music begins a bit later. It is part of me. Inseparable. I'd like to think that others could understand. In fact, I know they can.
'Waters of Tyne' and 'Big River'.....sung by Bob Fox. Get it while its hot.
Just too add that it seems wierd that even though I worked for the Welsh National Opera for 10 years, I still find it incredible that so many different musicians and different instuments can come togetheer so incredibly smoothely and sound so damn good.
Every time I sit in a theatre it really gives me goose bumps when I here them start. Utterly fantastic. Its almost magical. All of a sudden the noise and cacophany becomes this soaring music. Utterly brilliant and it really sets the hairs on the back of ther neck on end. I love it. If you have never experienced a live ochestra I really advise you that you go along and listen, you may just be suprised.
Everyone marvels at how well Staley performed as sick as he was, but the real story is Cantrell's obvious immense talent at singing in harmony with him and picking him up when he was flagging in the performance.
We drank mostly nice locally produced brews in Asheville, including a special Xmas Jam White Ale made by ABC. This old Kentucky boy was glad to see that most of the pubs had my preferred brand of Bourbon too.
Here's an audio recording of the entire two hour set from Phil & Friends @ Xmas Jam.
Can't think of a more appropriate artist for my 2000th post. "The Indifference of Heaven" from the "Learning to Flinch" album.
…Gentle rain, falls on me And all life folds back, into the sea We contemplate eternity Beneath the vast indifference of heaven The past seems realer than the present to me now I've got memories to last me When the sky is gray, the way it is today I remember the times when I was happy…
vault_dweller, didn't know you were such an old #%&*$# :-)
I disguise it well, but yes it’s true, I’m proud owner of a three digit member number…
Posted this in the “…listening to right now?” thread, but think it’s worth a repost here. It sums up the way this old #%&*$# thinks…”That’s the sound of common ground, Hallelujah”
That's Scots-Gaelic my friend......I know this to be true.
Matheson? I'm a 'Matthewson', believe it or not. Same thing. A Patronymic name, down the ages....Danish 'Matthiessen' involved too in the bloodlines.
Big Jolly Geordie Viking, and Proud.
Anyways....Here is an artist I admire absolutely. Troubadour. If you do one thing this year musically....Give this absolute f*cking GENIUS a listen. Breathtakingly beautiful music....No doubt.
I nearly said 'RIP', but that does not apply. The tunes are Eternal. Rock on, the force is strong in this one. Big up to Lee 'Scratch' Perry too....legend.
Want some Folk? No problem.
Polymath. He could do it all.
Enjoy, and take care of one another in this new year. Best way tae be.
Beacon Theatre security was pretty tight on Friday & Saturday night, so there's not much decent video I've found just yet. I'll post a few that have passable picture & sound. There is lots of good audio on the various torrents, if you care to check it out.
First up a nice bit of "32/20 Blues" from the 2nd set on Friday night. Hook Herrera, Jimmy Vivino & Nigel Hall join in.
"Smokestack Lightning" jam from 2nd set on Friday. Herrera, Vivino, & David Hidalgo join in.
12/30/11 Beacon Theatre, NYC
To open the 2nd set on Friday, there was a very nice rendition of Pink Floyd's "One of These Days">>>"Fearless." Also a good rendition of Bob Marley's "Lively Up Yourself" in the 1st set. So far, no decent video of either.
Following the night's theme of Mad Mules & Englishmen, "...Bathroom Window" was followed by a nice "Space Captain." Heard TTB rock this tune a couple times this year too, it is always welcome.
12/31/11 Beacon Theatre, NYC
Still searching for more good video of this night...
Love woodin music, and Steven Stills. btw, before anyone gets political, the song came from a dream of his about the Civil War. Does transcend generations of war I guess.
Saw this group at my first outdoor festival in '72. Nothing but bikers, girls, drugs, and alcohol. Not a bad day back then... they also had a special guest play along - Peter Framptom.
Love this John Martyn song...among many others. Quite like that Michael Penn tune Piper, will have to look him up as I had never even heard of him before! Thin Lizzy, Joplin and the rest posted by others are great....heard em all before but you can never get tired of em.
Can't remember if I posted this previously or not....'Small Hours' live with John on electric and lots of his trademark effects. One of the most Beautiful songs of all time IMO....and I've listened to a lot of music lol. He's played with Clapton and Dave Gilmour too, among others. I was sad when he died about 3 years ago, but he left a lot.
Heres a treat for ya piper, not a single song but a half hour set Florence and the Machine live at the BBC; Playing Shake It Out,What The Water,Take Care (Gil-Scot Heron song cover), Rabbit Heart and No Light No Light for Fearne Cotton in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge November 2011.
'No light No light' is great at the end, (around 26.00m) but its all good. Fantastic singer....rocking a bit of a 'Wicker Man' Pagan look in this one lol. I think shes beautiful meself. Right, off tae kip as its late. Cheers to Navigator for the Seger tunes! Good stuff, I'm a big fan.
Hit three Truckers shows Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night in two of my favorite villes, Louisville and Nashville. Saturday night was especially nice with Bobby Keys & The Suffering Bastards as the opening act. It was quite a weekend of cynical southern rock. Here's a couple of favorites we heard this weekend from the Truckers, one an original, the other a Warren Zevon cover.
Finally some good video from Saturday night. Hope these guys put together some video of Bobby Keys' set too.
First, the poster.
And some Gravity's Gone. 2/11/12, The Cannery, Nashville, TN
…Those little demons ain’t the reasons for the bruises on the soul you’ve been neglecting. You’ll never lose your mind as long as your heart always reminds you where you left it. Don't ever let 'em make you feel like sayin' what you want is unbecoming. If you're supposed to watch your mouth all the time, I doubt your eyes would be above it...
being one Hardcore Old-School AC/DC Fan, this one made me LOL, although I like the song very much. I was ten at that time and I think I didn`t have heard of this band at this point of time. However, back then, it was cool, I think....
I like this. Nice gentle music from a very troubled young man. although he was just 26 when he died his music seems to be from a much older man. Sad but great.
The Black Keys started the North American leg of their El Camino world tour in Cincinnati last Friday night, and vault_dweller was there...big surprise, I know. They're smoking hot after spending a few months touring in Europe, so don't miss them if they come to anywhere near your home. First, the all important ticket stub, love it when they don't tear them.
Starting off with some decent video of "Girl Is On My Mind." 3/2/12, USB Arena, Cincinnati, OH
AIC were a very good band, shame how it ended with Layne.
PJ Harvey 'Naked cousin'....Live in Chicago, good gig.
'The letter', the same. Gaaah, love this wumman. Theres Nowt like a bird that rocks.
Not sure WTF she's got on her paws like, looks suspiciously like oven gloves if ye ask me. She could wear a bin bag for all I care though, hehe. Shes the bomb.
Paul Weller (formerly of The Jam) with 'Wild Wood', live at BBC very good song.
JA with a great live version of 'Been Caught Stealing', BBC Jools Holland.
Radiohead with 'Paranoid android' live at Jools Holland..its fecking great.
Enjoy! PS Soup, love Nick Drake too, I posted loads of his songs on this thread ages ago hehe. Not sure if you ever saw them mate. Great song writer for sure.
Massive attack with 'Psyche', (Van rivers mix)....Trippy stuff and cool as phluck. Love Martina Topley-Birds vocals, shes good.
Till next time chaps, will have a look through the thread when I have time as there's always some quality stuff here. Cheers!
PIL (Public Image Limited) with 'Rise'. Hehehe, love Johnny Rotten.....proper nutter. When the Sex Pistols got inducted to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame museum in Ohio, they didn't even bother turning up for the inaugaration and scrawled a hand written letter saying amongst other things 'Were not coming. Your museum is a piss stain. $25,000 for a table, or $15,000 to squawk up in the gallery, a 'non profit organisation' selling a load of old famous. Were not your monkeys, and were not coming. Piss off. A SEX PISTOL'
Legend. True Punk.
Florence and the machine with 'Rabbit heart', Flo looks gorgeous at the Jools Holland show a few year back, and a good performance. Her legs are about 8 frikkin miles long lol, nice when shes wearing something short hehe *droolz* Fantastic singer, playing in Newcastle Metro arena tonight, and I didn't know till it was too late! Gaaaah. Found out 2 days too late, sold out within hours. Nevermind, seen em before years ago, and I'll see em again one day...be sure.
This is a beautiful song, a wee bit sad and melancholy....but good. 'Never let me go'. Great vocals.
Ah sod it, make it a triple bill hehe. 'Shake it out', live at the BBC. Love this too.
Tanx Biggs, I try to bring a little variety to the interlude, most of the Americans here have musical tastes that are quite predictable. Love PJ, Flo & the Machine, and many of your other posts...in fact I was tickled by your recent post of Mr. Lydon's song from the PIL days. I just love the message of that one, a proper nutter, but a certain truth to what he has to say. Listened to it before my usual Friday night venture to local venues-within walking distance-to listen to unknown acts like Houndmouth, Squeeze-Bot, and Johnny Berry. You'd be surprised, back in the day there was a bit of an alliance between us no-good hippie jammers and the punk/thrash scene; it was beautiful. I dare not post it here, but look up a band called Corporate Avenger on Youtube, the song title I dare not post either, the initials are TBIBs..."The written word is a lie."
As far as the BK's go, been listening to them for 10 years now & they've only just now gotten some much deserved attention...it's one of only a few bands I know of that can break down to just guitar & drums while still entertain a crowd. Seen them play in tents, bars, and farm fields...now they're blowing away arenas full of folks. As you know, I rate bands by how they sound live, & the BK's are hard to beat on those terms. No matter the genre, as far as musical tastes go, you’re either a follower of the pack or an outlier. I'm proud to be an outlier, often I spot what the pack will like long before anyone else is paying attention. I’m betting your mind works much like my own in that respect.

Here's some Houndmouth from a few weeks ago at one of my neighborhood's wonderful music venues. Love this area, the music scene is very robust, there's always somebody worth seeing. A little tune called "Comin' 'Round Again."
I can't reply to it all, but what is obvious on this thread is that you are all True music lovers....and 'God' whatever you conceive him/her/it to be.....(or non at all) Bless you all.
Liked a lot, Bowies 'Panic in Detroit' is great (Cheers Piper) and who can argue with the Hollies? He aint heavy, hes my Brother. Three times a lady, I should really instinctively hate, being a daft Punk at heart. Found meself singing along. But then hate was never what Punk was really about.
Jobs a Good un', some may remember the great original by Portishead....'Glory Box'....John Martyns (RIP) take on it. Trust me, its fecking Good.
Big John Martyn fan, wish more would listen. 'Genius' is a very over used word these days, but believe you me, ask anyone who knows and the tag most definitely applies.
I've put this up before, but its so beautiful I have to do so again.
'Couldn't love you more'. Says it all, really. 'Wired' at a lot of gigs. Had a Big 'habit', but he had an even Bigger Heart, and may he Rest in Peace.
Piper, Dart....Et al. I AM SO SORRY. BUT NAUGHT IS SACRED, In Teh Quest for Lulz.
LOL!!!
*Disclaimer. If one happens to be Jewish and has 'taken offense'. All one can say is 'Wow'. Don't make me be Jewish!! All Vengeful, and Ting. The actual joke is on those bigoted, hopeless Clowns. Its fecking hilarious.
Love the Lobos, as you know I'm a big fan, a feature at this year's Xmas Jam...with Jackie Green & Warren Haynes...again, outstanding. 12/10/11 Xmas Jam, ACC, Asheville, NC
In honor of the Final Four NCAA basketball tourney being played tonight - Go Buckeye's!!!!!!! I though Cheech & Chong's Basketball Jones* would be appropriate!
* nice session players too: George Harrison (guitar), Ronnie Spector (vocals), Klaus Voormann (bass), Carole King & Nicky Hopkins (piano), Billy Preston (organ), and others
Loving the Tull Piper, agree that 'Benefit' is brilliant, but it depends on mood which I think is their best record at a given time. Its all good.
Warning : Bat sh*t crazy French Genius alert Don't care what anyone says, in my considered opinion this is one of the greatest love songs of all time lol. Sebastian Tellier with 'La Ritournelle'.
He's mixing funk driven break beats with glocks, epic strings and lovely piano riffs. It shouldn't work. But it does, because he's a mad French Genius.
Heres the lyrics, which admittedly initially look sh*t (on paper/screen at least)....Until you actually hear him sing them and realise that because he is French he can get away with it and they might be one of the most beautifully profound things you have ever heard. Oh nothing's going to change my love for you I wanna spend my life with you So we make love on the grass under the moon No one call tell, damned if I do Forever journey on golden avenues I drift in your eyes since I love you I got that beat in my veins my only rule Love is to share, mine is for you
Love it, man. I know that being English I'm supposed to hate the French (lol), and for a laugh I often pretend to; but the truth is I admire their creativity and je ne sais quoi greatly. Hes amusing (and great) live too, frequently has mini breakdowns on stage when he's not 'feeling' the muse, or something is allegedly 'wrong' with the 'vibes' lol. True Artist. Tres Bon. Tres Bon.
One of my favourite Dylan Songs of all time, sung by in my opinion one the most beautiful, lovely voices of all time. Takes me away. Nanci Griffith giving some homage to Mr Robert Zimmermans "Boots of Spanish Leather".
I might have posted this before. It might well deserve to be posted again. I'll let you be the judge of that.
This thread has a proud tradition of Musical excellence, somewhat besmirched by the recent addition of Barry Manilow...For which I hold mineself entirely to blame. *Heheheh*
So, let us continue then. Unto broad, sunlit uplands.
Play it again, Sam. Thing is, I think some folk might have missed it. Do yer ears a favour, strap the headphones on, and rejoice. Yer lugs will thank thee. I cannot emphasise this enough.
Looking out from underneath, Fractured moonlight on the sea Reflections still look the same to me, As before I went under.
And it's peaceful in the deep, Cathedral where you cannot breathe, No need to pray, no need to speak Now I am under.
And it's breaking over me, A thousand miles onto the sea bed, Found the place to rest my head.
Never let me go, never let me go. Never let me go, never let me go.
And the arms of the ocean are carrying me, And all this devotion was rushing out of me, And the crashes are heaven, for a sinner like me, The arms of the ocean deliver me.
Though the pressure's hard to take, It's the only way I can escape, It seems a heavy choice to make, Now I am under.
And it's breaking over me, A thousand miles down to the sea bed, Found the place to rest my head.
Never let me go, never let me go. Never let me go, never let me go. And the arms of the ocean are carrying me, And all this devotion was rushing out of me, And the crashes are heaven, for a sinner like me, The arms of the ocean deliver me.
And it's over, And I'm going under, But I'm not giving up! I'm just giving in.
Oh, slipping underneath. Oh, so cold, but so sweet.
In the arms of the ocean, so sweet and so cold, And all this devotion I never knew at all, And the crashes are Heaven, for a sinner released, And the arms of the ocean, Deliver me.
Never let me go, never let me go. Never let me go, never let me go.
Deliver me.
Never let me go, never let me go. Never let me go, never let me go.
I heard this song on the radio this morning, and for some reason liked it more this time than when I'd heard it before. I decided to do a search for it and found this video of it. It's the acoustic version, but it's pretty similar to the studio version Anna Nalick is the singer - not too hard on the eyes, either:
Early Verve before big US radio hits. Always liked them.
Yay! Posted a few of their tunes in this thread Kontakt, great band. I like the earlier stuff the most too, 'A Storm in Heaven' was their best album by far IMO. Great live too, saw them at Newcastle Riverside (a very small, intimate venue) before they went massive and it was a great gig. Also when they supported the Smashing Pumpkins at Newcastle Mayfair before it closed down. Happy days.
This is 'Gravity Grave' from the 'Verve' EP. I still have this on limited edition 12" pink vinyl hehe. A track called 'A Man called Sun' is very good, too.
Get Back, get back again and again I've been here since I can remember when My life is a boat, being blown by you With nothing ahead, just the deepest blue...
To me you're like a setting sun You rise then you're gone To me you're like a setting sun You rise then you're gone
Come back, come back again and again, I've been here since I can remember when The world just spins whilst mine stands still Nothing's changed in your gravity grave
To me you're like a setting sun You rise then you're gone To me you're like a setting sun You shine then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun You shine then you're gone To me you're like a setting sun You shine then you're gone Go down on your light So bright it burns my eyes Sounds like a perfect way To end my life To me you're like a setting sun... To me you're like a setting sun...

Nice Ken! I posted her song awhile back, but reallllly like the acoustic version.
Thats a bloody good version of Behind blue eyes piper, the Irish twist is nice...cheers man.
Something a bit different, and special methinks....'Booth and the Bad Angel' (Tim Booth and US Composer Angelo Badalamenti) with 'Dance of the Bad Angels'. Badalamenti may be familiar if you're a David Lynch fan. Tim Booth is of Manchesters 'James' fame. Great atmospherics, great lyrics, great track.
This is a good live version of 'Watching the detectives'. Love Costello around this period....creative peak I reckon.
PJ with 'Sheela Na Gig'...love it.
Just for a laugh, the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. His heads on Fire, FFS. LOL! Whats not to love? Epic Nutter.
Some great tracks gents, as per usual. I have a confession to make. I'm in love. Like, really.....in love. LOL!
F*ck me senseless, she's got the love. (Candi Staton cover "You got the love", some Gospel Christian Soul)
'Shake it out', because she astrally projects her Spirit 3.10-3.35, and its fecking breathtakingly brilliant. Full half hour set too past 'shake it out', well worth watching the lot if you have 30 minutes tae spare.....great performance.
'No light, No light'....Jools Holland BBC. Magic!
Err, did I mention legs that are 8 fecking miles long, too? Don't believe me? Watch this, and try to contain yer excitement. Not my favourite song, but 'Jesus Christ'. Does it for me, anyways.
Mmm, Garbage. I've had a crush on Shirley Manson since high school. Have you heard any of their new stuff, Piper? New album's supposed to be coming out soon:
I totally agree about 2.0- that one brings back so many memories from my high school days. Did you ever hear anything from Angelfish, Shirley Manson's band before Garbage? Now that you've got me on a 90's rock kick...
FIVE years ago?!?!?! They were still playing shows then?? That's a year longer than Jump, Little Children lasted, and at least 2 years longer than Gran Torino. Oh, for being on the wrong coast for too many years...
Ever heard these guys? They were at Chapel Hill when a lot of my friends were going to school there.
I know the Ramsey original of that song Piper, nice version of a classic.
Heres John Martyn with "Spencer the Rover", lovely folk tune. I could have listened to this bloke play acoustic all day, not to mention the voice.
"Small Hours", one of my faves of all time, from any artist. Fecking Voodoo magick, man....Sublime. I know I'm going on about it a bit but it blows my mind how incredibly f*cking good it is, on many levels. This has a mighty 5,000 views on YT, whilst Nicki Minaj has about 500 million. WTF is wrong with this world.
John Martyn with the Floyds Dave Gilmour, ye might like this one Piper, "One World". Nice n' trippy, good vibes.
Here is one of the world's best voices which I never would have known about were it not for my godfather who played this tune for me on a CD some years ago. This is from a 1990 concert recorded at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City (thus the album's name Juan Gabriel: En el Palacio de Bellas Artes). This song actually turns into a jam that lasts forever, so once the drums start you will have heard the gist of the song. The point is, his voice is beautiful, strong, and dynamic, and sounds just as good at the end of this 3+ hour concert as it did at the beginning. I honestly don't know much of his stuff, but last weekend I watched this entire concert and was impressed just by his voice alone.
Dunno what it is with you & redheads, Biggles, whether it's Flo or Mr. Lydon. Love it either way.
The only thing to report from the vault is a recent trip to one of my favorite 'villes to once again see Tedeschi Trucks Band, this time at the Ryman Auditorium...I've got so much respect for that room, the history and the sound are so perfect. No good video as it's such a small venue, but managed to take a few decent pics with the phone.
Here's the way in...
During one of the highlights of the fantastic show... 04/29/12 Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN.
And, of course, the mission accomplished pic...
Planning on hitting a Dr. John and Gov't Mule show at the fabulous Iroquios Amphitheater here in Louisville in June, and a pair of Furthur shows in Atlanta and Raleigh in July. Once again going to Xmas Jam in Asheville, and doing the New Year’s Eve run at the Beacon with the Mule. Hoping to squeeze in a few Bluegrass festivals, an Allman Bros.show, and an Alabama Shakes show sometime this year too. Plus we've got our Waterfront Wednesday shows all summer and the Forecastle Festival to work in too...so much music, so little time.
Play it again, Sam. Thanks tae Piper for this tune, wonderful. 1, 2, 3, 4!
Jane says I'm done with Sergio He treats me like a ragdoll She hides The television Says I don't owe him nothing, But if he comes back again Tell him to wait right here for me Or just Try again tomorrow I'm gonna kick tomorrow Gonna kick tomorrow

PLF full set rehearsal at Terrapin Crossroads for the winter/spring run; it’s basically the same excellent PLF lineup from Xmas Jam, with the addition of John Scofield on guitar.

It might sem funny to some, But I really like a lot of Alan prices music. It may seem a bit hi brow to some but I like it. there is no denying his talents, as when he was with the animals they had some great songs.
I played this one at my grandparent's 60th wedding anniversary. Still makes me misty eyed whenever I hear it. I guess I'm just an old sentimental fool.
Just found this guy.. he's a big unit but, ohhhh that voice and guitar playing.. I think i have a new musical obsession! For me this guy should be a worldwide superstar.
Myrig, that was seriously awesome! Talk about a great find there, thanks for sharing that one! "Wagon Wheel" is pretty much required knowledge for musicians down here.
I've been on a bit of a Rat Pack kick myself today...
Julie was a lonely girl She said she was born that way She always felt that way She left home at age sixteen Got a job what you're supposed to do That's what you've got to do She fell in love and settled down In a council place there on the edge of town
She'd feel alone in a crowded room Cry when she heard a happy tune
It would be nice to holiday So they took her job away They just took her life away Doing nothing isn't fun When you've nothing from wich to run You've nowhere left to run She'd visit the social every day Every time be turned away Every time be turned away
She'd feel alone in a crowded room Cry when she heard a happy tune
A hundred stairs to her new room Over glass and blackened spoons Children grow old so soon Past the kids who gather there Pain masked by narcotic stares But no one really cares Her dreams were cut up and bled dry A million voices in her cry
Julie waits, her world is her window And Julie hates, she hates the world below And Julie hates, just what she doesn't know But Julie loves, She loves too much to know
Thank your lucky Stars. Next time you stroll across a so called "worthless" person, think this. There but for the Grace of God Go I. Be kind. Show loving kindness. Give alms. Exert your Humanity. Show that you care.
I hate Vevo with a burning Passion. But here ye go.
The two Greatest Soul Singers of All Time, my vote. Bar none. Aretha "Sister Re" Franklin, and Marvellous Marvin Gaye. Game over, that's it. Forget about it.
Looking out from underneath, Fractured moonlight on the sea Reflections still look the same to me, As before I went under.
And it's peaceful in the deep, Cathedral, where you cannot breathe, No need to pray, no need to speak Now I am under, Oh.
Though the pressure's hard to take, It's the only way I can escape, It seems a heavy choice to make, But now I am under, Oh.
Deliver me.
Never let me go, never let me go. Never let me go, never let me go.
Never let me go, never let me go. Never let me go, never let me go.
And it's over, And I'm goin' under, But I'm not givin' up! I'm just givin' in.
What will you do when the war is over, tender comrade When we lay down our weary guns When we return home to our wives and families And look into the eyes of our sons What will you say of the bond we had, tender comrade Will you say that we were brave As the shells fell all around us Or that we wept and cried for our mothers And cursed our fathers For forgetting that all men are brothers Will you say that we were heroes Or that the fear of dying among strangers Tore our innocence and false shame away And from that moment on, deep in my heart I knew That I would only give my life for love Brothers in arms in each others arms Was the only time that I was not afraid What will you do when the war is over, tender comrade When we cast off these khaki clothes And go our separate ways What will you say of the bond we had Tender comrade
well this is all I have to offer at the moment I love this song. Not so sure about the video. But I defy anyone not to want to get up and at least wave their hands to it. PLAY IT LOUD
what a beautiful song. I know a lot of people speculate about the lyrics but I am convinced the song is about Kates father reading bedtime stories to her as a child and the child in his eyes is her. Listen to the lyrics and if you have a daughter I am sure you will agree.
Sorely missed, what a fantastic talent. Wish she could have stayed around a little longer. I know she is happier now, and is where she belongs. Heaven sent.
got me a movie i want you to know slicing up eyeballs i want you to know girlie so groovy i want you to know don't know about you but i am un chien andalusia wanna grow up to be be a debaser, debaser
Laura Marlin, very talented songwriter...."My Manic and I", Bucking frilliant live version @St James Church London I think.
If he wants to die in a lake in Geneva The mountains can cover the shape of his nose If he wants to die where nobody can see him The beauty of his death will carry on So I don't believe him
He greets me with kisses when good days deceive him And sometimes it's gone and sometimes I believe him And sometimes I'm convinced that my friends think I'm crazy I get scared and call him, but he's usually hazy By 1 in the morning, the day is not ended By 2 he is scared that sleep is no friend By 4 he will drink but he cannot feel it Sleep will not come because sleep does not will it And I don't believe him Morning is mocking me
I wander the streets, avoiding them beats The ring on my finger slips to the ground I give to the gutter, give to the city The veins of which have broken me down And I don't believe him Morning is mocking me
The gods that he believes never fail to amaze me He believes in the love in his god of all things But I find him wrapped up in all manner of sins The drugs that deceive you and the girls that believe you I can't control you, I don't know you well These are the reasons I think that you're I'll I can't control you, I don't know you well These are the reasons I think that you're I'll
And last that I saw him Last that we talked down by a river Silent and hardened Morning was mocking us, blood hit the sky I was just happy, my manic and I He couldn't see me; the sun was in his eyes And birds were singing to calm us down And birds were singing to calm us down
I'm sorry young man, I cannot be your friend. I don't believe in a fairytale end I don't keep my head up all of the time I'm find it dull when my heart meets my mind And I hardly know you, I think I can tell These are the reasons I think that I'm I'll I hardly know you, I think I can tell These are the reasons I think that we're I'll And the gods that he believes never fail to disappoint me And the birds are singing to calm us down And the birds are singing to calm us down
This is really good, LCD Soundsystem "All my Friends". Wait till it kicks in.
Van the Man, "Astral Weeks". Stone.Cold.Classic.
Song for every lying shytehawk Politician out there. They had Steely Dans blessing for the 'kids' sample (love that too). The Man don't give a F*ck.
Here's a link to another band performing on ACL. A band from Pennsylvania I've been listening to for 6 or 7 years now, Dr. Dog. Got a chance to see them twice this year, at Forecastle here in Louisville, and at MMW in Nashville.
Quality stuff, loved Wheels' Time in a bottle shout amongst others, lovely tune...posted it meself back in the thread.
Too comfy though.
"Cold Turkey", sweat pissin oot of every #%&*$# pore, seeing things in delirium that are not there, writhing in so much f*cking torment wishing you were f*cking dead, that kind of thing. Just say no, kids!
This is proper music though. It is real. Thought the Velvets did the "sound" and chaos of the delirium better, but it might hurt yer lugs. Scratchy.
No seriously, heed the wise Words of Mr Mayfield. The funk is strong, in this one. He speaks the truth. Choose life. Life is good.
Bit Stevie, and his Wonderous ways.
What? Its CHRISTMAS MAN. Peace on Earth, and ting. Innit?
Stream of Consciousness, 'Joycean' Dubliners vibe in fact (a literary reference if ye endured it) Life makes little sense at the best of times. Why should the lyrics. Don't think so much. Just feel it.
Beautiful song, beautiful message.
You I thought I knew you, You I cannot Judge You I thought you knew me This one laughing quietly Underneath my breath Nightswimming Deserves a quiet night.....
Covers are always interesting, its yer own take and "He did great Good"
Mountains O' Things
The life I've always wanted I guess I'll never have I'll be working for someone else Until I'm in my grave I'll be dreaming of a life of ease And mountains Oh mountains o' things
To have a big expensive car Drag my furs on the ground And have a maid that I can tell To bring my anything Everyone will look at my with envy and greed I'll revel in their attention And mountains Oh mountains o' things
Sweet lazy life Champagne and caviar I hope you'll come and find me Cause you know who we are Those who deserve the best in life And know what money's worth And those whose sole misfortune Was having mountains o' nothings at birth
Oh they tell me There's still time to save my soul They tell me Renounce all Renounce all those material things you gained by Exploiting other human beings
Consume more than you need This is the dream Make you pauper Or make you queen I won't die lonely I'll have it all prearranged A grave that's deep and wide enough For me and all my mountains o' things
Oh they tell me There's still time to save my soul they tell me renounce all renounce all those material things you gained by exploiting other human beings
Mostly I feel lonely Good good people are good people are only My stepping stones It's gonna take all my mountains o' things To surround me Keep all my enemies away Keep my sadness and loneliness at bay
The life I've always wanted I guess I'll never have I'll be working for somebody else until I'm in my grave I'll be dreaming of a life at ease and mountains oh mountains o' things
I'll be dreaming dreaming dreaming.....
PE: Prophets of Rage.
Paul Weller, always got time for his tunes. This is live. Very good.
What we do here in these threads at SimHQ is legal becuase we are linking the material from You Tube mostly. If you are transferring those songs to your own medium for personal use that is different, but I'll let somebody with more knowledge of copyright law respond to your question.
Hey, Piper, thanks for the Silversun Pickups link. That was done here in Seattle. Commercial free radio, KEXP! I've picked up on a number of new bands (to me) from that station. They're quite eclectic. kexp.org You can check out their programming and stream at any time. I usually listen on the road and if something catches my ear, I just look at the clock, because I can remember the time I heard something and get home and look it up on their website. Handy dandy.
Some very classic Max Webster courtesy The New Music 7 min vid with shot interviews and some live stuff. Goto 4:13 for a very good early version of Battle scar. (Rush collaboration) Recommend checking this guys channel for other rare Canadian rock of '70s and '80s.
I'm a huge fan of Stephan Stills. IMHO, this is one of his best works. Not a protest song either. Story goes he dreamt this up, About the American Civil War.
Heres a pretty little melancholy ditty by the Housemartins, 'Step outside'.....reminds me of growing up in the sh*thole that was 'Walker' lol. Nowt and plenty of it....but we wuz happy.
Costello when he was actually good...Sweating Class A's for England.
Skip James cover by John Martyn, 'Rather be the Devil' unique take. RIP bonny lad. When someone like Clapton calls him 'electrifying', that just about says it all. Had his problems, but what a talent.
Jesus and Mary Chain, 'Reverence'. Total Nihilism but it rocks me f*cking face off. Probably glad I was too young for their earlier gigs, didn't fancy getting stabbed to death (crazy violence at shows, mainly Glaswegian nutters lol).
I'm just going to keep spamming this cos I love it, and I can. No one apart from Piper and Chucky listens to me tunes anyways so what does it matter.
Some folk tunes from my part of the world....'Waters of Tyne' and 'Big River', sung by Bob Fox....he's good and a smashing bloke too.
Love this version of one of my fave Zimmerman tunes, 'Boots of Spanish Leather'. Nanci Griffith from Austin, Texas. She has a lovely voice.
Florence and the Machine, 'Never let me go'. She's a great live singer. This is beautiful.
Looking up from underneath, Fractured Moonlight on the sea Reflections still look the same to me As before I went under....
Enjoy! (I'll have a look through the thread through the week, probably some gems as per usual)
Woman, I can hardly express My mixed emotions and my thoughtlessness After all, I'm forever in your debt And woman, I will try to express my inner feelings and thankfulness For showing me the meaning of success
Woman, I know you understand the little child inside the man Please remember, my life is in your hands, and woman Hold me close to your heart, however distant don't keep us apart After all it is written in the stars
Another beautiful song, and so true. The things of this world are very much temporary. The Storm will pass.
Oh my mama told me 'Cause she say she learned the hard way Say she wanna spare the children She say don't give or sell your soul away 'Cause all that you have is your soul
So don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul
I was a pretty young girl once I had dreams I had high hopes Married a man he stole my heart away Gave his love but what a high price I paid All that you have is your soul
Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul
Why was I such a young fool Thought I'd make history Making babies was the best I could do Thought I'd made something that could be mine forever Found out the hard way one can't possess another And all that you have is your soul
Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul
I thought, thought I could find a way Beat the system; Make a deal and have no debts to pay Take it all, I’d take it all, I'd run away For me myself first class and first rate But all that you have is your soul
So don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul
Here I am, I'm waiting for a better day A second chance A little luck to come my way A hope to dream, a hope that I can sleep again And wake in the world with a clear conscience and clean hands 'Cause all that you have is your soul
Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul
Oh my mama told me 'Cause she say she learned the hard way Say she wanna spare the children She say don't give or sell your soul away 'Cause all that you have is your soul
All that you have All that you have All that you have Is your soul
All along the watchtower is a great song. and there is just ONE man who can really sing it unfortunately it's not michael hedges, although he did a hell of a job. to me it will always be a Hendrix song.
Nixer. St Patricks day seems like a good enough occasion for pipes and drums LOL (not that I need one) So here are the bugles pipes and drums of the Royal Irish Regiment at the Edinburough tattoo.
In the back room she was everybody's darling But she never lost her head Even when she was giving head She says, "Hey, babe Take a walk on the wild side" Said, "Hey, babe Take a walk on the wild side" And the colored girls go... . "Doo do doo do doo do do doo ..."
Please excuse me but I got to ask Are you only being nice Because you want something? My fairy tale arrow pierces Be careful how you respond 'Cause you'll wind up in this song I never gave you an encouragement And it's doing me in Doing me in Doing me in Doing me in
The more you try to erase me The more, the more The more that I appear Oh the more, the more The more you try the eraser The more, the more The more that you appear
You know the answer so why do you ask I am only being nice Because I want someone, something You're like a kitten with a ball of wool And it's doing me in Doing me in Doing me in Doing me in
The more you try to erase me The more, the more The more that I appear Oh the more, the more The more I try to erase you The more, the more The more that you appear No, you're wrong, you're wrong You're wrong, you're wrong You're wrong, you're wrong You're wrong
Very good. Thom Yorke, 'The Eraser'.
John Martyn with 'Spencer the Rover'. Love this blokes music, he wuz great.
"Couldn't love you more". One of the best Love songs ever IMO. (ignore the babbling shyte at the start, he was loaded as per usual lol. Brilliant performance when he starts though, so much Soul. )
My doe, my dear, my darling, Tell me what all this sighing's about, Tell me what all this sighing's about.
With the money from her accident She bought herself a mobile home So at least she could get some enjoyment Out of being alone No one could say that she was left up on the shelf It's you and me against the World kid she mumbled to herself
When the world falls apart some things stay in place Levi Stubbs' tears run down his face
She ran away from home in her mother's best coat She was married before she was even entitled to vote And her husband was one of those blokes The sort that only laughs at his own jokes The sort a war takes away And when there wasn't a war he left anyway
Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong Are here to make everything right that's wrong Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too Are here to make it all okay with you
One dark night he came home from the sea And put a hole in her body where no hole should be It hurt her more to see him walking out the door And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the floor
When the world falls apart some things stay in place She takes off the Four Tops tape and puts it back in its case When the world falls apart some things stay in place Levi Stubbs' tears..........
Two weeks in a Virginia jail For my lover for my lover Twenty thousand dollar bail For my lover for my lover
And everybody thinks That I'm the fool But they don't get Any love from you The things we won't do for love I'd climb a mountain if I had to And risk my life so I could have you You, you, you...
Everyday I'm psychoanalyzed For my lover for my lover They dope me up and I tell them lies For my lover for my lover
I follow my heart And leave my head to ponder] Deep in this love No man can shake
I follow my heart And leave my mind to wonder Is this love worth The sacrifices I make.
One summer evening drunk to hell I stood there nearly lifeless An old man in the corner sang Where the water lilies grow And on the jukebox johnny sang About a thing called love And it's how are you kid and what's your name And how would you bloody know? In blood and death 'neath a screaming sky I lay down on the ground And the arms and legs of other men Were scattered all around Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed Then prayed and bled some more And the only thing that I could see Was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me But when we got back, labeled parts one to three There was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go For a pair of brown eyes
I looked at him he looked at me All I could do was hate him While ray and philomena sang Of my elusive dream I saw the streams, the rolling hills Where his brown eyes were waiting And I thought about a pair of brown eyes That waited once for me So drunk to hell I left the place Sometimes crawling sometimes walking A hungry sound came across the breeze So I gave the walls a talking And I heard the sounds of long ago From the old canal And the birds were whistling in the trees Where the wind was gently laughing
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go For a pair of brown eyes
We saw Heart at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix last night. Absolutely fantastic show! Ann's powerful vocals gave us chills. Heart gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this month.
If you have not heard of Gary Clark Jr. yet, you are missing out. I love guitar intro's, but if you want to hear his voice in the first video, it starts at 8:13. I think the intro was longer than normal as he was louder than the band members and was waiting for them to get adjusted. Nonetheless its an awesome intro.
Doyle Bramhall II in the yellow. This was Eric Clapton's Crossroads concert. Clapton had high praise for Gary Clark Jr. Rightly so!
I heard this on the radio the other day, on some eclectic program, as I don't listen to any show or station which would play this sort of thing on a regular basis, if in fact such things exist.
Anyway, I hadn't heard it for probably 40 years, and I had to go to youtube and reacquaint myself. An interesting nudge in the brain cells; such a simple tune but so rich in possibility. Turns out there are about 10 live versions on youtube, and the improvisation is completely different, both in form and feel, on each of them, but this one seems a good representative. Apparently truncated from 17 minutes, but there doesn't seem to be a whole one posted, and that is probably too much for most people's attention anyway. (The video imagery is a bit inept and heavyhanded, although it gets better after a while, but not really recommended, best just follow the audio):
Fiver Finger Death Punch cover of "House of the Rising Sun" recently released. Kick brass!! (no "video", just audio) This folk song dating back to the 1800s was made popular in the 1960s by Bob Dylan and The Animals which most people associate with.
This is the longer live version of the Duster Bennett song done by Original Fleetwood Mac and recorded live at the Boston Tea Party in February 1970. The intro guitar solo by Peter Green is longer on this version with some most subtle and soulful guitar I have ever heard. Danny Kirwan plays great rhythm guitar.
Last weekend around 3am I got the idea to mix a favorite Banco De Gaia track with Brian Eno's Ambient 1: Music for Airports. I did no editing whatsoever other than a fade in and out. And to my ears, it totally works. Clocks in at 36 minutes, but it's pretty nice ambience, I think.
Its funny b ut this is one of my favorite EVER songs. I dont know why, maybe it harks back to my youth and sunny summers? I dont know why but I love this song.
Wow, that's quite an instrument he's playing. I don't think you'd call it a guitar - it's like a guitar sized/shaped mandolin - four doubled strings. And I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't tuned as a mandolin as well. I wonder what it is properly called.
I was given a guitar when I was a lad and my biggest regret is that I never stuck at it.I had an idea the other day that I needed a new hobby and thought about it again, but with my big hands and arthritic joints I think the dream is over.
To finish my violin-lead rock sequence. I should have put all three in one post, but it took a while to remember them all:
This video has 3 cuts in it, which run together, of which I only wanted to post the first, but all the versions of this one by itself on youtube were either from tape or vinyl, and or poor quality. Anyway, you can stop listening, if you want, at the 4:10 mark, where the first cut slows to a halt with one key hovering on the B3.
I bought this single a long time ago ,,,,,, this is probably the first video i have seen of this song. great song but Mr oldfield is a bit of a misery guts
Been listening to this guy for a few DECADES and I swear his bass player looks the same as he did the first time I saw him prolly 20 yrs before this vid...unlike Rory.
So, peppergomez started a thread a while back and he played a cover of a John Fahey song. I thought it was brilliant, Ben! But I never heard of Fahey, so I looked him up. Man, what a great guitarist. Red Pony is amazing.
Then I found this. Blew me away. Well, at least the first part.
The Police.....Love'em. I have always thought stuart copland was the king of drums. I love the police as they are so unique. no other band sounds like them or can sound like them without copying them
Is it just me or is everyone now getting just exclamation marks ! when they try to look back through this thread? I most certainly am. Is it a youtube thing????
Yes. Brilliant. Essential. And so utterly new, at the time just completely beyond the existing musical language, in a completely original direction, the first 3 Tull albums offered a direction at right angles to everything that had come before. And it didn't hurt that the musicianship was masterful. But they weren't alone in being radically original in that short amazing period. So odd that within another three years, music was back to a sort of average net trajectory, and all the radical alternative possibilities had been discarded. Probably can be laid in part on the end of the "hands off" development policy for the FM radio format. As soon as it was established enough to be profitable, the avenues for extreme creativity were blocked in favour of promotion of reliable money makers.
ok forced myself to watch this. ughh she has a nice voice and boobs, mediocre guitar skills the solos made my ears hurt. Only so much i could take had to mute the sound and just watch the boobs i think that is what we are supposed to do on this.
The other day I started looking for acts that were big from 70-75 that I remembered seeing while living in Germany as a kid . . . this was one of the groups I remember hearing/seeing a lot
Not a big Barry Manilow fan (and I do listen to some sap).
However, his first big hit (I think) borders on [soft] progressive rock once it builds (in a Moody Blues meets ELP kinda way IMO, starting around 2:30)...
I've decided to embrace new music, starting with #3 on the Billboard Top 100...
Breakfast at Tiffany's was bad enough ('90s Deep Blue Something, not Hepburn's beautiful rendition of Moon River), I sure hope I don't get this tune stuck in my head!

this is how it played out on my ipod on random while I was walking my dog.......No lying. this is how they played (in order).
