Very nice pictures, I am looking forward to purchasing and flying WOTR. Will there be a recording feature in WOTR and possibly a new external viewing camera mode? A more traditional, F2 = external, F3 = Flyby... Etc???
Yes,being able to do more cinematically would be a very big feature. Some new fixed views and a free camera would open up a lot of creative possibilities.
Wow incredible!!!!! This is the main reason I visit this site everyday, waiting for any info and pics! "Not long to go now anyway …"music to my ears! Funds already set aside and waiting
Any chance you could let us know what phase of the war you're starting out with? From the pics so far it looks to be a Battle of France/Battle of Britain campaign.
I can imagine Sunday Morning with Coffee in hand. Turn on WOFF and fly 2 missions do the AAR then switch over to WOTR and do the same. Oh yes a busy morning.!
That down and back shot of the Stuka agains the ocean is about as close to "being there" as i can imagine. I'm glad we're so busy at work etc. Otherwise this would be the longest "two weeks" of my life!
Ugh - I can hardly wait any longer. There's so much I wanna know about this sim! I'm looking forward to diving into it What is OBD most proud of about WOTR so far? Anything you think fans will be pleasantly surprised by for the first release? (I know, I'm begging for crumbs here - anything!)
I am not able to share my impression in words of WOTR (Beta) however Pol was kind enough to allow me to share a few pics with you. I hope you enjoy them. I don't believe I am breaking the NDA in any way by simply commenting that the sounds are amazing (no specifics) and Matt is right to be proud of his scoring, once again.
ALL SCREENSHOTS ARE FROM BETA AND ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS (WIP). CHANGES CAN AND MOSTLY LIKELY WILL BE MADE TO VARIOUS ASPECTS BEFORE THE FINAL PRODUCT SHIPS.

I have to say, raiding channel ships could become a new addiction for me. Hope you don't mind a few more pics. Not really giving anything away I don't think by saying that the immersion I was hoping for is certainly all there.

Ah ah ! already historical skins...H.J. Marseille on the pics. but...does WOTR take place only during th BoB ?
'The intention is that it will eventually encompass the whole of WW2 and will be centered in Europe. From the Battle of France, Battle of Britain to the massive day and night raids over Germany and German held territories'
POL, I have a feeling that when you and the other devs time runs out on this old earth, that you folks will still be coding WOFF and WOTR in the Heavens!!
This is what CFS3 needs to keep going strong. Hard to believe it's such a old sim. Still play one of my 9 installs every day along with IL-2 1946 and the many installs i have for it. Wonder how it will compare to the new IL-2 Great Battles series because it looks pretty awesome too though i don't have them yet but holding out for WOTR. If it is anything like WOFF-UE it ought to be pretty awesome. Regards,Scott
Just a couple of questions. Will the aircraft be bump mapped? Hard to tell from the pictures. The aircraft look awfully clean; need more scuffs, guns residue around gun ports; generally a bit more worn. Is this still going to be using CFS3/WOFF terrain or new improved terrain? Thinking along CLoD lines?
Other than that, I will love the searchlights and other effects I see there.
But they do have some wear on them and marks from guns exhausts, scratches and so on - but not the excessive wear as seem in some sims and many of these aircraft were new, or newly replaced so some would be quite fresh as JimBob says. No single wear and tear skin will cope with the entire war supply..
Without giving away anything specific, let me just say that this isn't WOFF UE with a WWII "coat of paint" on it.
Flying without labels brings with it the anxiety of knowing that if you miss seeing one bandit - you could be dead from his guns in an instant if he gets the right hits with his cannons on you. Most of the wear and tear is from the stress and fear that grinds down the pilot.
You mean from flying 100 mph in WW1 over the lines, to flying at 300mph in WW2 defending ships or airfields etc, or attacking Britain ? I hope so .
It's a new campaign totally geared for the WW2 environment and the BoB period. Very different attacks and tactics from WW1 of course. AI has lots of new WW2 knowledge, for example like flying the JU87 and performing proper dive bombing whilst trying to hit a moving ship AI can react differently in certain conditions to WOFF. DM changes, you can belly land for example now.
However it is still all about single player immersion up in the sky defending your country or attacking with great AI.
You can try to belly land now...but you are taking your life into your hands because it's no easy feat to accomplish. It requires real skill, as does all of the sim.
Pol, if only someone had taken more pics of say..channel raiding ships...we could share them.

This sounds like the game I've been waiting for since European Air War - can't wait Pol!
Is the belly landing difficult because of the fences? Seriously, will there be a need to belly land? What I mean, is the landing gear damage modelled, so that if it’s hit it will not extend?

OBD is modeling WWII with great accuracy. Belly landings are definately not in there as an e-sport.
Well, there are times when a belly landing is pretty much your only option... If your gear is damaged or won't lock down, (it will be interesting to know if pumping the gear down by hand is modelled)... Or your chosen piece of ground to make an emergency landing is unsuitable for a wheels down landing etc... I've seen a few wheels up landings in real life... glad to say no one was injured
When you have to go for it you can, but it's tricky to do safely on some of the rough terrain. Yes I had to pump the gear down manually at one point in the Hurricane.
Interesting Pol, without going to the outside view, how can you tell the gear isn’t down? Does the “landing gear not in locked position” indicator work on the cockpit panel?
A few more... ALL SCREENSHOTS ARE FROM BETA AND ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS (WIP). CHANGES CAN AND MOSTLY LIKELY WILL BE MADE TO VARIOUS ASPECTS BEFORE THE FINAL PRODUCT SHIPS.
(The images above show the lighter, more transparent/iridescent oil textures provided with the all-in-one effects.xml that Daiwiletti and I put together recently)
Perhaps WOTR will have some additional refinements like oil that trails along in the wake of a wounded ship.
To me it looks like the original texture is still being used in WOTR, as it doesn't blend in very well and creates a discrete black/green blotch on the surface.
I love the reflections in the new cockpit by the way...
Pol, looks like a perfectly executed 1-point belly landing. Thanks for the pics. What does “Leader Effort 1.00000” in the TAC message mean? Is the flight leader being graded on his performance?
Ok Pol, I won’t worry about the readouts. The “office” looks great. I assume all dials will be functional (as long as they’re not shot to pieces)? Does OBD plan a Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe plane set for WOTR UE?
Here's how nutty I am. I haven't had jack-all time to fly in forever. In addition to a long commute, my company needs 50 hr/week to meet our current backlog at least through September; and I'm still working through permotting and so on to remedy the landslide I had earlier this year in addition to the usual summer work on our 6 acres and watching the grandkids.
Same here Tom, that will be my first plane of choice to learn inside out and go smack Jerry up with. Are you looking at doing some skins for said machine?
A look at the Spit cockpit would be nice I'm fairly knowledge on the Spitfire (moreso the technical and superficial details and changes rather than construction and the like) and I'd be happy to provide any critiques if they'd be helpful !
Love the new flak effects - very impressive! Definitely not your dad's WWI smoky puffs... Pictures don't quite do it justice though, it's in motion that you can really see the difference.
Here are my first screenshots, since the game is based on CFS3 I ported over my sounds and gunsights and I'm quite happy and loving the experience (except I can't get my pedals to work, but I'll sort it somehow).
ooh Nickerbocker, those screenies are impressive, we should put some of them up on the store page. We appreciate the screenshots guys, it really helps to share them, gets it out there.
Please feel free to use any screenshots I post to help promote this sim. The more people hear about WOTR, the better
And thank you Matt - which BTW the new soundtrack is amazing, I've had it the compositions stuck in my head all weekend. And here I thought it would be impossible to top WOFF...!
thanks, so did I, then again we thought Bhah would be difficult to follow too. There's nothing quite like a world war to get the creative juices a-flowing.
I got a severe reprimand from the c.o for doing a victory roll over the airfield after my first victory.
And well you should have Sir! No proper English Gent would parade his exploits in front of the whole squadron! But then what do I know, I would have tried it myself if I thought I would not kill myself.
Unfortunately... my second patrol was fatal Engaged two Heinkels and damaged both, but my engine was hit and rapidly stopped. I was aiming for a dead stick wheels up landing at Manston. Came in lovely, slid along on the old girls belly, no problem, she was straight as you like... then the dreaded OBD fence arrived... Hurri instantly turned into scrap metal and blew up!... lol!
I'm pretty sure in reality, a Merlin III engine would have smashed through the fence like it wasn't there, but, Hey Ho... such is life
unfortunately my joystick arm is out of commission for a few weeks (fell over, tore some things, old man). But I booted her up and got in the cockpit to have a look around. punched the throttle to full, and careered into the stands where a second squad was parked up...it was not pretty. See you in the air chaps.

We'll carry on taking out the Huns for you Matt, get some well deserved R+R old chap
On patrol south of Bournemouth, the usual convoy sweep... got into a scrap with a Heinkel and got jumped by a 109 who put a couple of holes in my starboard fuselage. Didn't find out until I landed (had to divert to Christchurch as it shook me up a little)... I didn't even see the bloody 109 until he screamed past me. Luckily he wasn't a good shot
F/O Manfred Czernin on patrol with 17 Sqd. Modifying Robert Wiggins clean skin. Adding weathering and age. Not much yet, but more to come. Anyone compiling a list of skins completed?
Also, my grandfather told me a story of how his unit was crossing the road in France a few days after D Day when a 109 came screaming low over a hill barreling right towards him. He thought he was going to be strafed for sure and kind of clenched his teeth, but the plane just wooshed by. A moment later, a Spitfire raced by in hot pursuit. About a half minute after that, there was a loud explosion and some smoke and then presently, the Spitfire did a climbing turn back into sight and vanished the way it had come...
Ok, it's 3:00A.M. !!! I am going to bed. Thanks a lot OBD. I am to old for this $&!+ !!! WOTR sure looks nice though, but I am still mad at you for keeping me up late.
S!Blade<><
P.S. It didn't help that I purchased WOTR and downloaded it at 10:15 I think, but I still blame you.
Cool pictures Blademeister, makes me wish I had more time to play WoTR myself but with work and studying for the real thing I'm usually too tired in the evenings and too busy weekends to dust off the old joystick. Also, I can't wait to see the inside of a Spitfire in some of these screenshots OBD.
Very nice, Blade! It's 5:30 AM here and looking at the 3rd picture my eyes read it wrong for a moment and I had a vision of a hurricane with a big hollow nose scoop like a sabre!
Thanks Gents, glad you like them. I did a bit more flying today getting ready to start a Campaign this weekend and here are a few more pics. WOTR really looks and performs well even on my old rig.
Blade_Meister, do you mind me asking what's your rig?
Yup, it's a secret. If I told you, I would have to kill you and I am trying to kick the habit my good Sir. Here are a few more pics as a good will consolation. Thanks for playing though.
S!Blade<><
P.S. On a serious note. My Hat is off to OBD for the way clouds are rendered(?) in WOTR. It is the only time I can remember in a flight sim seeing a plane through the clouds. If I am remembering correctly, correct me if I am wrong, usually you are either blocked by the clouds or outside the clouds. The fourth picture here is what I am referring to as being seen in the clouds. Quite nice I think.
Blade_Meister, do you mind me asking what's your rig?
I PMed you Sir so as not to clutter up this thread with my specs and settings. S!

Thank you Ace_Pilto. WOTR is pretty easy on the eyes and I jut enjoy taking pics. The down side is I hardly ever just seem to fly a mission without stopping and shooting pics. I think I am going to have to designate picture taking days and actual Campaign days so I can truly enjoy what WOTR has to offer without interruption.

More Cowbell! I mean more PICTURES Sir!!!!
To POL, WM, Mat, MF and others I don't know in OBD . What a wonderful job you have done in producing WOTR. I honestly have to say after just a few missions that OBD has taken WOTR one notch above WOFF UE, and I Love WOFF UE also, but this just visually looks Fresh and feels really good in the FM department and the music. I am looking forward to entering a Campaign this weekend and experiencing what you all have prepared for me in the BOB, especially the AI. I just want to say that the pics I have posted are straight from the game, no Photoshop what so ever. What fabulous visuals WOTR presents us with. Thanks Again Guys. S!
Great pics Carrick first two. Something looks wrong on the 3rd pic tho, some tiling on the skin? Do you have aircraft detail turned down or something or is it a custom skin?
Those Flying Pencils need to tighten up their formation very considerably! Looks like a stock CFS3 bomber formation there, ie same as fighters. I know it was 'close up for fighters, spread out for flak' (ie spacing could be varied depending on the threat) but even for flak, that Do 17 outfit looks way too spread out.
Formations in WOTR or WOFF have nothing at all to do with CFS3.
Like the Vietnamese army officer supposedly said to the US Army officer who observed that the latter never lost a battle in the Vietnam War, Pol, that may be true, but it is irrelevant. The Dorniers (and German bombers generally, from what I have seen) should be in much tighter formation.
Made it home... Downed an He111, but he shot me up a bit. Lost Oil pressure crossing the coast. Engine died, Landing gear would not deploy. Managed to get her onto the field. Plane was a bit dinged up, but I was unscathed. First "successful" gear up landing.

Videos I don't need- it has nothing to do with not believing you. Just confirming the formations are not controlled by CFS3, little is. So it not irrelavant, it was correcting an asumption. It can be adjusted, but that would be for all. We do not have variable formations depending on craft type and situation - that would be a new feature, maybe one day...
Fair enough Pol but I wasn't assuming that the formations were those of CFS3 (which WoFF significantly fixed/improved on, of course, not least the formation-keeping). Just stating that they looked like them ie too widely spaced for bombers. Variable formation sizes would be a needless feature; if anything, ketten within a staffel changing formation for the bomb run would be more worthwhile, tho again unessential. What really appears to be needed (IF the pics I have seen are representative) is the default bomber formation spacing to be significantly tighter than in that pic, even allowing for FoV.
But yes great pics. And bravo for choosing the Hurricane over the sexier Spitfire for the RAF's leading lady.
I may pick this up for Xmas tho as well as seemingly small formation sizes, I am very wary of the apparent lack of simulation of ground control interaction. Stock CFS3 didn't suffer too badly from that, due to its tactical setting (tho even there it should be present) but for the Battle, and for any tactical setting involving the player in a radio- and radar-based air defence, something better than using the TAC is needed, which CFS2 managed via scripted campaign missions but CFS3 bottled it.
I posted an After Action Report in the AAR thread above with a lot of new pictures. It is actually a During Mission Report actually captioning the mission from beginning to end as I flew it as a British pilot. I had fun writing it and of course flying it and taking the pics. Check it out here if you like. DMR Here are a couple of pics from it. Hope you enjoy if you do check it out.
Sure but when you say "Looks like a stock CFS3 bomber formation there," many people including me take that as "looks like they are using" which is not the case, so I am clearing it up that's it.
If people sit and wait until maybe one day it's the perfect sim with a trillion features. then we won't get there as there won't be enough sales to carry on. Everyone has their pet feature or interest and it takes years to add all the small items that half a dozen people would not like or want.
Formation spacing can be easily edited. Its the days of testing all possibilities of situations and all aircraft that takes the time.

Great pic... I can just imagine the pilot thinking ''I really need a cup of tea, can someone fetch the NAAFI wagon... I'm a bit parched''

The Plane is a bit dinged up?... Did you say the plane is a bit dinged up?.. No you didn't say The Plane is a bit dinged up did you Stache??? Common Mannn!!! Dude, you tore off both wings, bent every blade of the prop, you tore off the whole underside of the plane including the radiator scoop. This is not to mention the 3 bullet holes in the cylinder head that you can see in the panel above the exhaust manifold and then there is the gaping hole through the access panel right below the exhaust manifold!!! You lost oil pressure? Geee, I wonder how you lost oil pressure??? I thought these Rolls Royce engines had self sealing cylinder heads? A little bit dinged up! Your Superior needs to put you in Tiger Moths from now on. At least they are cheaper to write off when you ding them up a bit. A bit dinged up!!! Off to CLOD with you!!!

Stache, this is how you land a Hurricane when its hydraulics have been shot up. You do it off to the side of the runway and in the grass. What is really cool is that I was heading right for some trees and then I just kicked the rudder and I turned right between them. I am not sure how accurate this is, but as I was seeing my virtual pilots life flash before my eyes it allowed me to live to fight another day. The only problem is that the Master Crew Chief said she was totaled anyway. AAAARRRRGGGGGG !
Hurricane R4118 and I were doing really well. Four confirmed kills, 8 missions and no technical troubles. That was until I got peppered by return fire from a Stuka. The hydraulics were shot to pieces and I had to make a gear up landing at Hornchurch. R4118 was a write-off
Nice pictures PO_Klonko, keep them coming. I am getting better at gear up landings, I do not rip the wings off as often now. Seems I get a lot of times to practice.
I'm getting there with the belly landings. Just completed a scramble to intercept an incoming raid over the South coast. I suffered engine failure but managed to make it to a friendly field and pump down the gear. Unforunately, I had no flaps and glided in a bit too fast. I ended up overshooting the runway and ripping off the wings on another Hurricane.
Nice pictures PO_Klonko. Here are a few more I have taken recently.
This first one has a bit of a story to go with it. It is the story of how good and realistically faithful WOTR is. I was flying the Quick Scenarios Scramble Mission. Our Squad took off and was turning off to the right to come around and take on the attacking huns. I was not keeping up with my Mates as my air speed was very low like 140. The first 109 past me as I was trying to turn to engage him, but my air speed just sucked! I was standing still as this monster sped by me. I do a quick once over of my Hurricane's console, prop pitch... good, flaps... up, mixture & fuel pressure... good, Oil temp & pressure... good, rad temp & pressure... good! As I did this quick scan in a matter of seconds I missed the one glaring problem that was the reason for my lack of speed, which most of you may have guessed by now, but I was also trying to keep eyes on my attacker. As I moved my eyes from console to my six and back to my console, then back to my six to pull a tight enough turn, just barely, to stay in the air and thwart off my attacker again. It was during one of the glances from my Hurrican's console to a forward right 45% movement around to check my six again, THAT I SAW THIS IN MY HURRICANE'S SHADOW ON THE FIELD BELOW ME AND KNEW INSTANTLY WHAT I HAD MISSED. This minute detail, even in its depiction of a shadow, that, yes I am a Dumb ass , I had missed was keeping me slow. This is how good WOTR is.I retracted my gear while fighting off the 109 and then pressed the attack to get a kill of one of the attacking 109s. This is what is so endearing to me about WOTR. Never mind the sheer number of aircraft in the air, the clouds(Best in the business as far as I am concerned), the huge number of Squadrons to fly this BOB Campaign from, the AI(again best in the business IMHO), the presentation of the GUI,...never mind all of that, it is little details like this that give me great enjoyment in WOTR. Not to mention that this little detail allowed me to fight on, get a kill and return home, a humbled pilot but still alive. These are the moments a Sim pilot lives for and enjoys to no end. I captured this picture from the Fraps video I was recording of this mission. This was an awesome moment in WOTR!
Here are a couple more that I kind of like. Pol, I can't wait for the new 109 skins as I am tired of photographing Bf109 #6.
Great pics again PO_Klonko a few of mine from last nights campaign mission,i got my claim confirmed with the downed 109..(All pics use a slight Reshade preset)
Both of you are posting some excellent pics Gents. I wish more would post here, but I understand it is hard to pause and break the immersion. Here is one from a group of pics I want to make a tragic AAR from. I have 3 sets of pics I want to make AARs from, but it is just finding the time and writing the story. Love the landing light in your last pictures Adger. Is that new? I have never experienced a landing light?
BM, you should call the Police on them! Better make that INTERPOL. Perhaps you’re wrong altogether and this isn’t Isle of Wight after all? Maybe you’ve landed in Poland?

'Don't panic! Don't panic' as Cpl Jones would have said. It's probably just one of those anti-invasion obstacles intended to prevent glider landings, which proved mainly to be a hazard for friendly aircraft making forced landings. Some patriotic local citizen has likely decided this stretch of road was too attractive for any Nazi glider pilot. The thought of a bunch of tough paratroopers dressed as Nuns was probably the last straw.
Been waiting for the release of the Spitfire before posting this one. Isn't this Spitty Gorgeous? Well done guys. Pol, this is pre exhaustive mental shutdown for you. Hope you are recovering well Sir! Now, I have a copy of WOTR to give away! Off to ATAG Forums WOTR thead.
Nice Adger. I just saw this picture on my desktop and I don't think I have ever shared it. This is 1 of my favorite shots from testing the Spitty. It was taken in my Spit Campaign just as B Flight were turning in to intercept an incoming flight of EA.
IIRC the book 'Freedom's Battle - the war in the air', reprinted in paperback a few years ago, contains a good few citations from Tee Emm for this award, along with many RAF doggerels like those of the RFC from WW1, but often more rude, with many unforgettable lines like like 'I didn't want to join the air force/I didn't want my *******s shot away' and 'They sent us out to Egypt, a very pleasant land/Where miles and miles of sweet eff-all are covered up with sand'. Recommended.
33 lima, I am thinking that is a little bit more than a prang, but yes it most certainly does deserve the MHDOIF. Pretty sure this was early testing on the stall update Mark and WM were working on. For a low level stall and low alt crash, the DM for this prang as you call it is pretty good I think.
Nice Capt. I love how far out WOTR draws the tress on a clear day. Really nice pics, your new card is really drawing the detail nicely. Shared one more thing in your technical thread that has really helped my performance in WOTR.
Thanks Blade! Had another successful sortie this evening. Managed to down two He111's and one Bf110 before making it safely back to base. Fantastic sim!
You are correct about the size and colour. It is difficult to find just the right fonts for the skinning app. There were so many variations used in real life. Perhaps over time they can be improved. 100% accuracy to the original requires significant time and the pressure was on to get the skins out there for you folks.
We are working on releasing a Spitfire skins template so you folks can add your own.
Thanks on behalf of both Nolan and I. It started out as a joint effort but Nolan seems to have vanished. I therefore am carrying the load and hope that he gets back in touch. Hopefully he is well and just busy with real life. I am currently working on filling out the rest of the Jastas.
Great stuff Blade..Glad to see you've sorted the rundll "thing" out aswell. I'm looking forward to what the Devs can bring to this sim in the future, great job so far OBD.
Somebody should grab a brush and paint, and camouflage those hangars. Don't they know there's a war on?
This is up in middle England later in the war where Gen. Patton is. This is a fake airfield with blow up hangers and blow up Hurricanes on the flight line. We just fly a real Hurricane in and out sometimes to make it seem real and to fool the Jerries 33lima. Had you fooled did it? Good the plan is working Mate!
I'll see your 109s and up you with a pair of Hurricanes! Hmmmm, go to the lake and swim or fly WOTR and check out Roberts new skins? Hmmm, where is my noodle? Sorry Robert, maybe later dude!
Man the new skins look amazing need to jump back in. Haven't even tested out my new vkb gunfighter with the center mount and extension in here which is a tragedy all of itself.
How on earth did the RAF65 (YT) get grouped with the RAF92(QJ), and in addition RAF92 are all flying the same skin (A3 has letter "D") and not the (AP) skin which has the letter "A".
Relax RW, that is not your fault. I was just testing a hopeful mod and I flew it in QC and I chose the skin because I had never seen it before. As far as all of the others being "D" , I have no idea. I assume because it is QC? 1 step at a time 33lima. To make this clear this is not my mod but another WOTR patron has taken on this task from my questioning him as to how to tighten Formations for me to take pictures in game with. He deserves all of the credit and will receive it if he decides to share it.
S!Blade<>< Edit 22/7/2019 ChiefWH has released the 'Formation Mod' as a WIP under testing. He would like more feedback so please download it and check out his Blog ' Hangar 22' here:Hangar 22

Beautiful! Fine for 109s, too. Looks like something straight out of...wait for it...the Battle of Britain! A VAST improvement. And it seems they can hold that formation in at least 30 degree turns, too!
If this works for bombers too - and if (on just over min spec) the latter can consistently operate a single raid strength (excluding escorts) of not less than twenty (three staffeln of 9 would be ideal), rather than ten or a dozen - I'm in!
Off topic for this screenshot thread but it's fairly easy to change the formations, it will just need thorough testing in various weathers, groups, waypoints etc Also the merge could be much more chaotic / collisions. We improved the AI dramatically with better collision avoidance so they may handle very close formations a little better but it would need testing of course.
BTW it may affect other things sudden turns, landing timings / collisions and so on - hopefully not.
So far we have only seen 1 collision. The takeoffs & landings are still working fine. After takeoff when forming up most planes pass the Leader but then slowly fall back into Formation. The merge seems fine. I am going to make myself the leader and put a nine, then 12 plane formation through its paces and see what happens. Generally so far it is working well and looking good. Hangar 22 has a WIP version posted for people to test.

Using the 'Formation Mod' found here: Hangar 22 Robert Wiggins, maybe next time I will remeber to Fly JG51 and get some pics of your new skins. These are from the JG2 Campaign I have going. S!Blade<><
[size:14pt][/size]
Edit: Pol, I was tracking 46-60 FPS on my old system which is normal for me. 15 Axis planes and 10 Allied in a Campaign mission. I will be testing more over the next few days
Super dooper. Just need this to work, and default raid size to be no less than two staffeln of bombers (preferably no less than three) - with the min spec I might add - and (not that anyone cares but me) I'm in.
Adger, where is the high speed stall, slats out, as you round the Church Steeple picture? Common man!!! Better map your pause button to your Hotas to capture that pic! I'm waiting!!! LMAO!
And here is the whole Squadron in formation thanks to Pol and WM. I am still making personal tweaks to the Formation spacing, so these do not reflect what WM is doing in the next patch for WOTR. It is just me trying new settings.
S!Blade<><
The different sections do get a little anxious at times, Green Section racing a bit ahead of where it should stay(far left Vic in the picture). Blue and Yellow sections(far right Vic, middle Vic, int the picture) are holding the correct Formation position very nicely. What I likes is the ability to move around a bit as I am sure happened in RL. Nice work OBD!
And one I just really liked. The quality cockpit, the shadows, the clouds and environment. Really awesome IMHO!

Here it is mate! And no I didn't crash. I couldn't find a pointy steeple so this will just have to do Sir. A couple more recent takes.
And then I encountered this tonight in my Luftwaffe Campaign over the Channel. Plus there were 9 Ju87s in the mission also. Next I am going to mess with the Kette and Ketten formation settings. The Vic and Scwarm are as good as they are going to get.
Lovely pics, and good to see the different individual aircraft ID letters and that the Spits are featuring both A and B Schemes on their upper surfaces. The Spitfire's upper wing Type B roundel does need to be larger, though, they were supposed to be as large as they could be, without impinging on the aileron, notwithstanding any exceptions. The unsightly gas warning panels seem to have been on their way out from about mid-1940.
33Lima your comments are acknowledged but I don't believe OBD have yet implemented code to address aircraft selection based on skin changes over time. In fact It would require rework of the squadrons with many different changes based on timeframe. It is probably doable but not enough skinning staff to address it at this tme.
Understood and fully appreciated Robert - which is why for the sake of greater realism, it's desirable to use the capacity which does exist to feature a representative appearance, rather than an exceptional (or possibly inaccurate) one.
For example, MJF Bowyer's 'Fighting Colours' features a multi-view drawing of Hurricane I L1768 GG-K after delivery to 151 Squadron in January 1939 (before the ID letters changed at the outbreak of war) and this DOES feature SMALL B Type blue/red roundels on the upper wings (and fuselage sides for that matter). And the same book even has a photo showing L1934 OP-D of 3 Squadron with one such small roundel on the port upper wing and none at all on the starboard, which the author says he saw 'on quite a number of fighters including Spitfires'. And there's a pic of 611 Squadron's Spits at Drem in April 1940 in the Osprey Spit I/II aces book with what looks like exactly the same small upper wing roundels as featured on the WotR Spitfire. But during the BoB, most (if not all) squadron service Spitfires had the regulation, larger Type B roundel on their upper wings, so if there has to be one type of roundel in that position on the WoTR Spit, the larger one is objectively the more realistic choice. Just like if you HAD to choose a single RAF fighter undersurface colour for the BoB, easily the most representative choice would be Sky/duck egg green, not the earlier black/white or aluminium.
Not that bigger or smaller upper wing roundels would have helped with the first engagement featured here:
As for the gas warning patch, without it seems to be the most common for the period, and a vet quoted in 'Scramble! - a narrative history...' mentions seeing them in many places, but not actually on their aircraft.
I appreciate your input and yes changes can be made going forward. I offered my skinning skills but I am far from an experts on the aircraft in BoB. I have utilized historical data that I had access to with limited research time given the OBD schedule.
In fact I"m sure OBD would welcome any skinners with your knowledge to come on board. The assistance would certainly be appreciated. Any effort could be put towards cleaning up inaccuracies. If you are willing, we could use your help skinning.
At the moment my focus is to complete some necessary changes OBD has asked for.
Best Regards and thanks for the constructive criticism, it's appreciated.
Ah, if I only had the skill and patience with a paint program to match the size of the modest library! Only skin I ever made was a CFS3 Ju88A to whose stock skin I added 'wellenmuster' squiggles above and a well-weathered temporary black finish beneath, which somebody must have liked as it was (with full permission) added to the ETO expansion...
I wonder if we have some similar sources - some of your excellent Bf109 skins seem to be based on the profiles by Richard Ward in the classic Osprey Aircam Battle of Britain Special, which tried harder than most to get the 109's common upper camouflage patterns right (but not quite, and still had most in 70/71/65 instead of 71/02/65 or even early versions of 74/75/76). Still a pretty good source after all these years, although thanks to it, I got the lighter undersurface colour wrong (choosing Sky, instead of the likely correct Aluminium fuselage and White starboard wing) on a model I made back about 1980 for an old workmate's dad, of his 616 Sqn Spit, L1055.
Well I can try, Robert. What's needed? Drop me a PM if you don't mind. I'm the meantime, I'll have a look at what I can find here on skinning, templates etc.
Nothing like a little flattery and smooth talking to sucker in an NI 'Mucker' stalking the shadows around here! Welcome to the 'I no longer have any spare time' WOTR club 33lima! Good work Robert!
Nice picks Gents! 33lima, welcome to the neighborhood. I see you took a stroll over to CheifWH's hangar and picked up some mods. I have been severely distracted this week with GBS Bodenplatte patch and then WOFF PE. I haven't gotten out of the P38 since I downloaded the patch. Then WOFF PE had me hooked in the cockpit watching the new animations and belt feeds not to mention the step up in graphics. I wish I was retired and could spend a few hours in each of my Sims per day. I am going to have to get back here into WOTR or somebody is going to get upset with me. Going to try to focus on WOTR on Monday. OBD are working on a lot of good stuff over here right in stride with the WOFF PE work they have been doing.
Had to post this one as I think it's one of the best Hurricane skins I've seen so far (151 Squadron). Although it does not yet have the missing 'bite' of Dark Earth added to the port wing, and some-one forgot to retract the footstep, it is nicely weathered, has the right shade of yellow (Chrome Yellow, IIRC) on the fuselage roundels and the more common shade of grey for the squadron codes, plus a less bland undersurface than the stock scheme. And with the glossiness set low in game, I much prefer the general finish and OBD's representation of Dark Green and Dark Earth to CloD's. Nicely done!
There are two less obvious details that I particularly like on display in this picture, one of which which I noticed at the time, the other I didn't.
The first one is the way it captures the realistic silver glint on the barrage balloons.
The second one is the one I didn't notice at first, which is the dockside crane in the act of loading or unloading the ship visible under my Spitfire's rear fuselage, in the Royal Victoria Dock.
Dull grey-brown textures for dock areas and long, simple low poly quayside warehouses, in place of what's there now, would be even better.
Makes sense, fair enough. I understand the footstep was connected mechanically to the flap over the handgrip behind the cockpit so when the pilot put his hand in that and pressed in the flap, the step would extend. But pics of unoccupied static Hurris show that there was a way of locking the step down. There is also that pic of restored R4118 airborne, with everything hanging - including the step.
You can't have too many pictures (virtual or not) of the most iconic and beautiful warplane ever to grace the skies, so here's another one, of Gordon Olive's kite from 65 Squadron. Several of his vivid post war paintings (reproduced in 'Spitfire Ace') of his air battles from May to September 1940 show his aeroplanes, but he portrays all the British fighters with the Sky spinners and rear fuselage bands that were only introduced about November 1940. But this is how the Spits he flew would really have looked, during the Battle.
Top hole! As you can see, bally Jerry pranged his kite right in the how's-your-father; hairy blighter dicky-birded, feathered back on his sammy, took a waspy, flipped over on his Betty Harpers and caught his can in the Bertie.
But by then it was too late. The first cabbage crates hit London on July the 7th. That was just the beginning.
Is it the missing 'gas patch' on the port wing? I admittedly haven't watched that closely...but I seem to recall it was there, and I know it's been discussed...
No, not that. The gas warning panel was never universal and though popular these days, I'm happier when it's not there. But the change is very visible in the last pic.
No other takers, so it's the radio mast. Before 1.19 the Spit had the 3rd type of mast, a simple spike, but this should have had an internal aerial not external wires; it was used with the later TR1133 VHF radio, not the more common TR9D HF set. So it now has the 2nd version mast, suitable for that radio and more representative for the Battle, with a little triangular prong added to the top rear, and the antenna lead-in has been moved closer to the rear of the mast.
WotR was already correct in leaving out wires from fuselage roundel to tailplane tips, as this was for the radar-based IFF system (not the Pipsqueak DF one) that only started appearing late in the Battle.
Ok how about the Heinkel? There are two improvements here:
*lol* Yeah, not much way I was ever going to get that right. You've probably already forgotten more than I will ever know about that kind of detail on these planes. Your period knowledge is most impressive...but if I'm being honest, I'd never have noticed and I bet most people wouldn't either
If fixes are to be made, I'd strongly prefer a whole bunch of wrong aerials and gas patches, in order that attention could be paid to the sim's performance. And I bet I'm not alone on that, either.
Still, always nice to see your write-ups. Caused me to spend $ on more than one game, for sure
OK [drum roll] it's 'spot the Beta 1.19 improvement' time.
First up, who can identify what's been improved with the Spitfire I?
I hate to be critical but I've noticed a few more things which aren't correct. The Spit has the later Mk. IX elevators which were introduced on the production line in 1943 (the double-angled mass balance weight, Mk. I-V all had the earlier 45 degree balance weight:
The decals on the upper wings are also too small, and the wrong colours. But otherwise, the model is perfect.
Quite right - I hadn't noticed the mass balance. The upper wing roundel colours seem to have been very susceptible to weathering to the colours shown, though they are too small.
Ooooh, nasty! I've only ever had one mid-air with the new tightest formation settings, but I didn't hang around to find out how my Spit ended up...
...though Red 3 did provide a hairy moment, on my last show...
I like the fact that in 1.19, Station Commanders have finally acceded to the Air Ministry's instructions to camouflage the formerly conspicuously-bright grey hangars...
Airfields still look like airfields, and hangars like hangars, but at least the pen pushers in Whitehall will leave us alone, if not the Luftwaffe!
Nice pics Trooper & 33lima. 33lima if you keep buzzing the field like that the CO is going to have you peeling spuds to make chips for all the boys in the mess hall! Well 33 lima, scratch camo hangars off the to do list. Nice work Pol, you snuck that one in and they look real good to Sir.
Yes indeed we got those in, WM did them late on. Just about, as it was trickier than just changing textures (and all the damage states) as we used hangers all over the place including France etc.
Looks like ye ole Spitfire seems to be a fan favorite based on the pics. And rightfully so I suppose - good looking aircraft. It’s no P-38/40/47/51 but not bad!
That last in game picture absolutely looks real. Look at the fog, awesome. If we just had a switch to release the O2 mask and let it hang at low altitudes. Fabulous picture mate.
Had to step away for a bit. It seems awfully quite around here. I took a flight just to look around and for fun and WOTR still looks stunning. Edit: and 1 more old one I like.
Something I heard many years ago, an announcer trying to rouse up support for bingo players.. "any more for any more, prize bingo" - basically asking if any more people are coming to play more bingo .
Yes V6 version rare, but phased out shortly after the war due to steering issues.
Yes, also reportedly the climb rate on that Pony was inferior to all the Luftwaffe threw up against it so yes, right after the BOB it was put out to pasture early. Here are 'a few more for, you guessed it, a few more'.

The Stars are just coming out!
Random Dirty Windows! The boys at OBD are sly in their programming prowess!
Returning home from a late Patrol on a cold winters night.
Far too peaceful, all these artistic shots. Time for some shameless depiction of good old-fashioned gratuitous violence. Courtesy of a Quick Combat Stuka party, pending resumption of my 65 Squadron campaign after an enforced absence from ops.
'Twas a peaceful enough start, admittedly...
...but thankfully, it soon turns quite nasty...
Not a happy ending though, if you try to hasten the demise of a Stuka with a dead prop by ramming. Hurricanes are strong; Stukas are stronger.
WOTR now all set up on the BootCamp side of the Mac Pro (2013) and it flies and looks great. Most settings work well at maximum, cloud shadows/density are at 6, ground shadows at 2 - same settings as for WOFF PE on the Mac - and there is no flickering whatsoever - on an ATI card, lovely! Terrain/scenery budget texture tweaks, in the pics below, are the identical ones I use for WOFF PE - taken from my long WOFF-on-a-Mac post (info. is under the relevant BootCamp section there). Outside views usually give an average of 100-120 fps - cockpit views usually don't drop below about 65-70 fps, not even near ground level. I'd say the budget texture tweaks bring an extra 10-15 fps into WOTR - although the fps are just fine even at stock settings. Will tinker with the level-4 variant (budget/texture tweaks) that Panama Red created for WOFF PE - to see how it functions in WOTR too.
Welcome VonS, love your FM tweaks over on the WOFF PE side. Hope you enjoy your experience with WOTR. She is something special in the way of WWII Combat Flight Sims. Nice pics Sir.
Thanks for the warm welcome gents' and pleased to be here - from a few days of flying I can say that this is just as good a sim as WOFFue/pe, well done OBD. With WOTR and my little install scenario for early WW2 in SF2 I can now do some casual WW2 flying when the fancy strikes me. Very nice.
By the way, when landing the Spit in WOTR, I recommend coming in on one magneto - this gives smoother landings than two magnetos and flaps extended (the Hurri. has more subtle flaps - stage one good for takeoff, stage two for landing). On the Spit. however I managed to do a fine three-pointer by not using flaps at all and only one magneto - good touchdown speed is about 130-140 kph.
A couple of more pics. - really getting into this sim, yes siree "bob." Nice sun effects in the one with a downed BF-109 in the background. In the other, had difficulty getting the wheels down (manually) - the left one partially collapsed while rolling, probably took some damage from the 109. Didn't dare to apply brakes but let her roll to a stop with engine off.
If you look in that shot you can see the trail of smoke going way back where I have murderously clobbered this Hun. Then this happened after he pulled up......
"Hello Red 2 this is Rupert Leader calling, the Bloody Hun hit the silk!"
"Hello Shortjack this is Rupert Leader calling, forming up so I can bring the boys home! Jerry'll not be happy with having his arse handed to him today!" "Hello Rupert Leader Shortjack calling, Good Show Old Chaps! Good Show!!!"
I am going to collect all of your how to fly comments, VonS
Did not know the magneto stuff nor about the horsepower stuff on the other thread at all. Good fun to learn.
WOTR is quite realistic with engine management - I always like the little details in the OBD sims. On the Spit., sometimes advisable is a higher landing speed of about 150 kph (rather than the 130-140 kph rule I posted above) - just to be on the safer side and not on the edge of a stall.
For engine management tips in WOFF - I recommend the thread over at this link:
Another tip for WOFF is to always run with fuel set to 70 or 80% approximately, since this is closer to real-world conditions, unless you are running the "realistic fuel consumption mod by Orbyx" that is included in JJJ's "MultiMod" manager for WOFF - available under the relevant WOFF threads.
Pol, the correct bomb package under the wing of the JU87 really looks nice. I was able to get some picks tonight to replace some from an earlier version of WOTR that didn't include this. Thanks for your effort to fix this little inaccuracy Sir.
Fine pics. gents', keep them coming. And don't forget to park strategically next to the hangars, not like I did right in the path of the moving trucks.
Spitfire duo Bob Stanford Tuck's Spitfire, 92 Squadron, May-June 1940, with an aircraft of 74 Squadron in the background. No.92 changed its ID letters to QJ sometime later in 1940 when it was realised 301 Squadron was also using GR; which didn't solve the problem because it was then realised that QJ was also being used by 616 Squadron, who had to change to YQ! The black ('Night')/white undersurfaces were ordered changed to Sky (aka duck egg blue, aka duck egg green) about June 1940, at first with no underwing roundels.
Thanks for taking the Historical realism a bit deeper Sir. Nice work!!! S!Blade<><
On September 12th, the morning after R Stanford Tuck was given command of No. 257 Squadron, he took his Hawker Hurricane, DT-A, for a familiarization flight.
How he ended up at The Isle of Wight is anyone's guess. He took the liberty of using the Chain Home RDF towers as an acceptable turning point to begin his return flight to Martlesham.
Imagine the tower workers surprise upon witnessing an RAF pilot this low and close to the towers. The boys on the middle deck clapped and cheered as they watched this crazy bloke speed passed.
The boys on the top of the tower did likewise, enjoying the show.
On his return pass Tuck flew his lass down as low as he dared to give them a good show once again.
All of the boys on the tower got a chuckle as they watched Tuck fly off to the northeast and out of sight.
Upon his return to Martlesham he recollected about the Hawker Hurricane, "After the Spit, it [the Hurricane] was like a flying brick–a great, lumbering farmyard stallion compared with a dainty and gentle thoroughbred….It nearly broke my heart, because things seemed tough enough without having to take on 109s in a heavy great kite like this." He paused and then proceeded to comment on the positive virtues of the Hawker Hurricane, "It was a remarkably good gun platform; very steady when you opened fire….It was very easy to fly; had no vices, and would take a great deal of punishment and bring you back home….So it was a very fine aircraft for fighter vs. bomber work." Robert Stanford Tuck went on to lead No. 257 Squadron to great success in the late days of The Battle of Britain and into the opening days of the Blitz.
The duty erk rushed into the hangar and spat out, "Mates...bally ten-penny ones dropping in the custard......Charlie Choppers chucking a handful on me towers!...,but the boys were famished after the last mission 33lima. All that flyin about and dog fightin and such. You couldn't expect them to rush right back up without a spot of tea and crumpets my good man? The Squadron leader responded, " I do say there's still two towers left mate, that'll keep Jerry busy for a while old bean. More tea chaps?
WOW!!! Those came out incredibly lifelike. The first one looks really good, but the second one, just WOW!. The way the sun is reflecting off of the closest Hurricane and the way it is not reflecting off of the others like they are under the cloud cover from the sun is really cool. It shows up a little bit in the color picture also, but in the black and white it is much more dramatic and realistic looking. Did you use some kind of filter also or did you simply convert to black and white? Either way the result is stunning. Away they all go into my best of WOTR folder thank you very much! Here is my attempt from one of the night photos from the original 3 Episodes of my night AAR which was never used but might be released after I finish the current 'Wings Over The Reich: War Stories From The Battle Of Britain!' Yes I am still working on it and hope to release some new Episodes soon. Cheers Pol and Happy New Year to you and Mark 2.0
Thanks Blade yeah the 2nd one is the best I think. I added grain as all real photos have some especially in those days, and converted to B&W did a few tweaks like slightly lighten the distant hurricane lettering area etc.
In earlier ones over the Cliffs of Dover I added a little glow too.
Yeah cool pic almost feel those guns rattling off in the night there !
Thanks yeah may give it a go- It does seem to hint of a real photo.
Absolutely amazing Pol! As well as the others. Haven't been around in, #%&*$#, about a year I think, and it's great to see this is living and doing well. I lost all the files I had when I was trying to help with some of the skins (lost that drive) but I just may have to set this up again (as well as WOFF) and take them for a serious spin now that I am officially retired and have nothing but time on my hands.
Nice to hear from you nbryant, we thought something bad had happened as you vanished! Did you get any emails sent?
Yeah install it again we need people like yourself posting of their experiences of WOTR
Don't recall any of the emails. Had a lot going on at the time with work and the loss of my graphic drive set me back and to add to it we were dealing with the wifes Parkinsons. After that I focused on prepping to retire and then the world went a little crazy with everything. Jumped over on the WOFF site also and see some amazing work there as well. You have been busy!
Some beautiful shots there VonS, 2nd one with the wing showing is like a Turner with its drama!
Thanks Pol - yes, WOTR makes for some great photos.
For those running WOTR Phase One, just a quick note (after some testing) that the tweaked shaders.xml file used in my WOFF GPU Tuner Patch (for PE/also compatible with BHAH.II), and that turns on several lighting settings/effects that are dormant in the stock shaders file - may be copied over to the WOTR GPU Tuner Patch as well. Make sure that the tuner patches are deactivated first, in JSGME, before copying/moving, etc. The shaders.xml file should be placed in "C:\OBDSoftware\WOTR\MODS\01_VonS_MaxFPSnGraphicsGPUtuner_ver1.1\OBDWW2 Wings Over The Reich" and then loaded, with the ver. 1.2 patch installed after ver. 1.1 and overwriting 1.1. Couple of representative pics. below (gives a wee bit more greenery to the grass in sunny conditions, as is the case with shaders.xml in the WOFF Tuner Patch).
Cheers all and happy WOTRing, Von S
P.S. I am currently running WOTR Phase One and my FrankenWOFF 4.18 installs with "v-sync forced on" in the in-sim menus - and I like the results - with about 20 to 30 or so FPS extra overhead with v-sync off (about 80-90 fps with mods. installed), capping FPS to 60 with v-sync on maintains smooth FPS and also keeps the GPUs a bit cooler. Tweak such settings to taste and as per rig. setups. I will probably continue running the installs with v-sync on since I have noticed no loss in quality and no loss in smooth FPS that way (no point in having wasted FPS that I can't see or do anything with, but it's good to have the overhead there). I will maybe re-visit the WOTR GPU Tuner in the future once I've tested further my "FrankenMiniTuner" - since it may be possible to make more distant terrains sharper but not to lose too many FPS - will see how it pans out further in FrankenWOFF 4.18 since I have to run a couple of campaign flights to collect further data (so far so good with FPS in QC mode).
Hoping to spend some time on WOTR for a while and started off with a German campaign. Managed to bag a Hurri and a Spit. Remember to watch for the Hun in the sun guys!
Amazing pics as usual! #%&*$#, think it's time to shelve my other projects and start again with both the Reich and Flanders. I bought and moved to a new computer and lost all of my #%&*$# files and templates but have that itch and may have to start rebuilding my collection and trying to add a few. Keep up the work gents, this still puts others to shame for it's campaign and depth of story line.
Been experimenting in GIMP with some accurate roundels and camouflage tones. As I've said inumerable times before, the model is excellent and it really looks right. I am hugely anticipating the devlopment of the post-BoB Channel Front (1941-1944) as it's my favourite theatre of the air war.
I have seen some pics without and some with over time. I can always remove it. Nice to see some WOTR pics!
Ah that's very interesting! Glad to be wrong I presume it was something in E-4 production that was not carried into the E-7 and F models.
I'll be posting a lot more when I get into an RAF campaign. Loving the sim as always and eagerly awaiting more glimpses at what's to come in future updates!
Flying an RAF campaign with No. 74 Squadron as "Tam Maguire" at the mo. Already racked up 3 confirmed with only 2 hours of combat time. Made up a personal skin today using an unused code (ZP-S) and based on the camouflage scheme used by the squadron from May-July:
Love that B/W underside! Used from 1938 till July 1940, was then back in use from November 1940 till May of the following year; the Brown/Green scheme being replaced by a Green/"Mixed" Grey/Medium Sea Grey pattern in August of 1941, the "mixed" grey finally being replaced by Ocean grey in early 1942 - a scheme which stuck around until 1948 when it and the roundels were replaced entirely.
-
Additionally, I've put together some new generic skins which are looking very sharp.
Great stuff nice to see some skins and pics Lythronax. We hope to post some pics of the expansion soon. Still WIP but getting there
Thank you very much! I'm hugely excited to see what's coming next, WoFF and WoTR are my go-to single player sims and have been for years now! Been pretty difficult getting by with only Brownings on the Spit however, I wonder when some more heavy hitting firepower might be available for our squadron
Yes we have the 2 cannon armed Spitfire Mk.Ib's coming to No19 SQDN, the MKIb early and a later one with MGs and Cannons! We hope to post some info before the end of August. We shall see...

This is very exciting news!! I'll be on the lookout for news/updates, when I'm not playing the sim of course . I'm so excited to see WOTR fleshed out as the scope of its potential has barely been scratched and I just know you guys are going to knock it out of the park! I was wondering whether the team still accepts 3rd party 3d models for aircraft or other vehicles? If so I might be able to help out.

As I recall,
This Is The WOTR Picture Thread
so,.... a little less talking and a few more pictures would be appropriate. Plus, I don't believe you anyway Pol! Unless you can produce some photographic examples of said Spitfire Mk.Ib's patrolling in WOTR then this talk of cannon armed Spittys must be rubbish! The proof is in the pudding old boy!
S!Blade<><
Pulled these out of the vault just for you Pol! You working on the fishtails for the next iteration of the Spitty?

Pulled these out of the vault just for you Pol! You working on the fishtails for the next iteration of the Spitty?
No fishtails till late 1941 on any Spit V I believe With the Mk V there's a whole host of different props, windscreens, exhausts, elevators, etc. depending on time and place of manufacture. For instance, a Mk Vb built at Castle Bromwich in May 1941 will have the same Rotol RX5/3 35 degree prop and blunt ES5 spinner (some would already have the later RX5/10 broad-bladed prop, though the iconic pointed ES11 spinner wouldn't appear till the end of the year), external armoured windscreen panel, and blister on the cowling inherited from the Mk IIb; there is no way to distinguish an early CBAF Mk Vb and a Mk IIb apart from serial number and the prop - most IIb had the DH prop.
Supermarine produced Mk VBs from the same time period will have a de Havilland 20 degree prop with short, pointed spinner (same as the Mk I), usually no cowling blister, and from April/May 1941 onwards will all have the later Mk Vc windscreen with internal armoured glass.
Here are some photos:
Early Supermarine Mk VB (pre May '41 with the external windscreen), with two CBAF Mk VBs directly next to it (the closest with RX5/10, second with RX5/3 - both with the Mk II-type ES5 spinner!)
Later 1942 shot with typical Supermarine Mk VBs (note the CBAF example in the mix with the RX5/10 prop and pointed spinner)
If I were planning out variants to model I'd go about it like this:-
F Mk Vb early (up to June 1941) - Merlin 45, 12lbs boost, fabric ailerons, older exhaust manifold, early/round Mk II gunsight
Typical Supermarine Mk Vb (W3848) with Mk Vc windscreen, DH prop and fishtail exhaust - photos from December 1941
Some CBAF Mk VBs in the background with an early Supermarine example in the immediate foreground. Note the exhausts, spinners and props.
74 Squadron Mk VBs, two CBAF and a Supermarine in the background; the one in the air has the RX5/3 prop whereas the one in the foreground has the RX5/10 with ES5 spinner; all seem still to have the early exhaust, April 1942
F Mk Vb late (1942 onwards) - Merlin 45 & 46, 16lbs boost, metal ailerons, fishtail exhaust manifold, square Mk II* gunsight
(Supermarine production had moved on to the Mk Vc and Mk VI) - CBAF: Rotol RX5/10 wide-blade prop, longer/faired ES11 spinner, external armoured glass, often the balloon/Malcolm hood - CLASSIC Mk VB
Interesting historical info. Lythronax and thank you for posting -- here's hoping for some early, non-WEP, two-bladed prop. Spitties and Hurries in WoTR too (and perhaps the D-series BF-109s) -- for some late 1930s' scenarios. Yessiree pre-BoB.
More info. on Watts/Airscrew two-bladed props. under this thread.
Yes we have the 2 cannon armed Spitfire Mk.Ib's coming to No19 SQDN, the MKIb early and a later one with MGs and Cannons! We hope to post some info before the end of August. We shall see...
Hoping this timeline for more info is still valid, I'm positively itching to hear more!

Cheers all, Von S
I'm in agreement that some pre-BoB scenarios would be lovely! Probably no 2-bladed Spits in 1939 as they'd all been retrofitted (or had been so constructed from the start) but some 2-bladed Hurricanes were still in use in 1940 so that'd be a very interesting challenge! A very early war/late '39 Spit would all have a two-pitch 3-blade DH prop, already a few with the externally armoured windscreen, no armoured fuel tank, most with gun flash-dampening muzzles, early radio mast, no mirror, some with the early pitot tube, and most would have a GM2 Mk I or Mk II gunsight. Hurricanes were far more varied at this point in time so I can't really comment beyond a mix of props, windscreens, outer wing sheeting (fabric or metal), gunsights, etc.
Definitely some 2-blader Hurricanes in the BoF though, especially during the Phoney War!
Great pics and info guys. We are behind a little so probably next week when we get round to the dev status/information update.
I'm very excited regardless!
Made a wee mistake in my earlier post; no Mk Vs were fitted with the RX5/1 (and 4) propellers (RA640 magnesium blades) - these were the rarer metal Rotols used in exactly 32 Mk Is (RX5/4, many in No. 54 Sqn, which used Rotol props exclusively) plus many early Mk IIs (RX5/1). The early wooden Rotol with RA675 blades (either Jablo or Hydulignum) I was referring to is the RX5/3, used in most Mk IIAs and early Castle Bromwich Mk VBs.
Metal props with a similar profile to the RA640 would be used in a 4 bladed hub on the HF Mk VI, some VIIs and VIIIs and a select few early Mk IXs. Wooden blades with the RA675 profile would be used in the vast majority of Mk VIIs, VIIIs and IXs.
Been doing a new RAF career with No. 266 Squadron as John Felton of Essex. In two missions I've had 6 confirmed kills - all two engined bombers! I imagine the more experienced members of the squadron are fuming. They seem quite susceptible to damage at the moment, I wonder if they should maybe be a bit tougher?
