My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative)

My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 12/31/18 12:06 AM

I went through my music library and chose my essential 90’s tunes (from an admittedly small collection compared with 70's and 80's) for an upcoming road trip. Deciding on a top 200 was tough (I tried but couldn’t limit it to 100). There’s plenty I left off (many 90’s albums I can listen to from start to finish). But this 200 song cap is what I’ve come up with so far (14.6 hours).

So, are there any standouts that you would consider missing in your top 200?

EDIT: Trying to keep it strictly 90's sounding (i.e. no 90's Rush).

You’re missing these.

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 12/31/18 03:46 AM

Thanks, NH2112. That first one I'd never heard of by name (band or song) yet a few seconds into the song I knew I'd heard it. smile

The second one confused me because I can actually make out what Eddie Vedder is singing (the opposite of Yellow Ledbetter). biggrin

Very good tunes. I'll find a place for my favorites on this thread (for example, Nirvana's "Sliver" and R.E.M.'s "You" are expendable). But it might not be necessary to remove any as Evanescence is disqualified (2003+). I gotta check the rest, my memory isn't 100% on these (I might allow for late-1989 to early-2000, but no more). I can always make a B-Side playlist for my Greatest 200.

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 12/31/18 07:08 PM

Interesting to me as I re-listen to my 90's playlist in song alphabetical order vs. the above artist/album order...

For example, The Cranberries' "Not Sorry" is one of my favorite deep cuts, but I have to admit it's included partly because I expect it to be there sandwiched with two others between hits "Sunday" and "Linger" when I listen to the album ("Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?"). That's not a good enough reason (I don't like it *that* much as I do some other deep cuts) so it'll likely be moved to my B-Side playlist, along with others that either don't quite make the cut (hits by Sister Hazel, Tonic, Sublime, Jesus Jones, The Smithereens, Dishwalla, etc.) or time frame.

I have no idea why I could never get into the Foo Fighters, such a popular band among my peers. The three big hits I've included are fantastic songs, a staple of my playlist. The rest doesn't grab me at all, and I've tried. "Seattle sound" (grunge/garage) was influenced from a combination of Punk and Rock, and I lean much more towards Rock (revisiting Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam). Lots of music from this era has strong Punk influence, sometimes too much for me.

I noticed a hole in my playlist, that I didn't have any Hole. smile I'd heard of Courtney Love but didn't know anything she did, so I went searching. First song I found was "Doll Parts". Definitely belongs, I like it and I have heard it before. So I go to Amazon and lucky me, Hole's Greatest Hits is only ~$5.00 and includes "Doll Parts". One song is $1.30 so one or two more hits and it's worth buying the album, with other songs that might grow on me. Nope. Nothing else on that album I can even tolerate, and I know if there's a chance that something might grow on me over time. There was just nothing there for me, so I bought the single.

I like "Hole" quite a bit. Their cover of "Gold Dust Woman" is fantastic. It's too bad that Courtney kinda fell off the deep end into obscurity.

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 12/31/18 11:18 PM

I've used my recent Grunge rediscovery as an excuse to top off my 007 James Bond theme song collection, purchasing the late Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" from "Casino Royal". I also purchased my first Adele song, "Skyfall".

On my B-Side playlist I'm going to also include every favortie song post-Y2K (guessing about 20 songs, if that many). I can think of only 6 off the top of my head.

Man, even Load/Reload was in the 90's, this bit of humor seems like it was just yesterday...

Something I forgot to mention...I'm loving all the sexy 90's female vocals.

The recent Paula Cole concert (front row center, great seats when she's not playing piano) was the closest I've come to a religious experience. Her voice has not aged one bit.

Alanis Morissette and the late Dolores O'Riordan to name a couple more...beautifully unique singing voices.

Another one of my favorites...

EDIT: Gotta have some of this to offset the angst and depression in so much 90's music.

Alright, I guess I that's about it then. Just need to make some minor changes (following four below replacing Evanescence which has been disqualified and will move to B-Side playlist - I'll listen to them both).

I guess "Wishlist" slipped under my radar, remembering how awful I thought "Yield" was (much like the other Spacehog songs off the same album smile ). IMO, of course.

I've tried some lesser known bands like Audioslave and it's just not working for me. I guess I'm more into the better known radio hits (although I did include several of my favorite deep cuts).

I wonder what Lisa Loeb is doing these days? If she’s still making new music it must be all underground stuff because I’ve not heard any of it.

I'd never heard of Lisa Loeb until that trolley video a few years ago. I thought I'd heard the song before but didn't know it was from the mid-90's. I researched her and learned that it's her song "How" in the movie Twister.

She just kinda does it for me...

Sweet. thumbsup Interesting how her career started if the YT comment is accurate...

==========
Great song! Lisa Loeb turned 50 years old back on March 11, 2018... a little bit of interesting trivia about Lisa Loeb and this song is that "Stay" comes from the movie called "Reality Bites" which starred Winona Ryder... When the song was selected to be on the movie soundtrack and then released as a single, neither Lisa Loeb nor her group Nine Stories had a recording contract and were not signed with any record label while the song was becoming a hit..."Stay" ended up reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 exactly 24 years ago TODAY on August 6, 1994, and remained there for a total of 3 weeks..The tune became a "Gold" single and remained on the charts for 7 1/2 months (30 weeks total)!..Lisa and her group went on to sign with Geffen Records, and had 4 additional hits make the Billboard Hot 100 between 1995 and 1998...thanks for sharing this classic original music video! Take Care! Ms. Elizabeth🎶💿🎶💿🎶💿

Playlist updated (i.e. Added "Right Here Right Now" - Jesus Jones) and Runner-ups added below it.

I'll wear this playlist out over the next month or so and maybe make a change or two if something else comes along.

I'm staying open to any suggestions...

EDIT: Looking at my Runner-ups, too much Seal (I'm a big fan of Seal (1) and especially Seal II, but a couple or so of those shouldn't be there...will fix on next listen).

Here's something fun to think about. How many artists who released their first album in the 1990's are still around today and still somewhat commercially successful?

I'm hard pressed to think of anyone besides the Foo Fighters and Green Day.

2019...discovers Green Day. biggrin

This is just how out of touch I am...

Several years ago I downloaded a 15 min. video (dated 2005) with the filename "Pilot Training - Bagotville 2003.mpeg". It's a recorded Canadian F/A-18 back seat joy ride. Mid-flight is edited for time but the jet is motionless at beginning and end of video. Great video, one of my favorites.

It begins with the screen "Pilot OJT - Bagotville 2003 - Life as it is" and starts playing Creed's "My Sacrifice". I recognized the sound as being Creed (I have the first two albums) but had never heard of the song before. Same with two others at the end of the video, U2's "Beautiful Day" and Green Day's "Time of Your Life". And that's how I know of these songs and why they're in my listings above. I have other U2 but that's all I knew of Green Day.

I made the mistake (IMO) of purchasing Creed's "Weathered" CD for that song, thinking I'll likely enjoy it since I really enjoy the first two albums. Eh, no. I only like that one song on the album. Lesson learned.

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/03/19 07:02 AM

Tonight I watched a one hour show called "The Nineties | S1 E7 - Isn't it Ironic?" about 90's music!

Yup, pretty much how I remember it (mostly) until about 1993/94, then I must have tuned out completely because they totally lost me. No corn and limp biscuits for me, I have no idea what all that stuff was about in the later 90's. So maybe there's more "new" stuff out there just waiting for me to discover. Or not.

They did explain one thing, that while Coolio's "Gangstas Paradise" has a dark message, it also has a catchy chorus and hooks, making it accessible to everyone. I took that to mean that even a white guy like myself who detests 99.99% of Rap/Hip Hop music and culture and who can relate to *nothing* in the song might still enjoy listening to it (even if it was Weird Al's "Amish Paradise" spoof that I heard first smile ). Genius song because it works, I *do* enjoy listening to it.

I knew when the show started with Poison's "Unskinny Bop" video (1990) where they were going with it, but I don't completely agree that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" finished off Glam Rock/Metal. I dunno, I recall that many of us who listened to 80's 'Cock Rock' (with Poison being the extreme, thinking more like Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Cinderella) had already moved on to Guns N' Roses (1987), Living Colour (1988), The Black Crowes (1990), also Van Hagar's "OU812" (1988), "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" (1991) and in my case, Rush's "Presto" (1989), "Roll the Bones" (1991), and of course Metallica's 'Black Album' (1991). All before or at the same time as Nirvana's breakout hit.

They also showed Warrant's "Cherry Pie" video (1990). But then watch and listen to "Uncle Tom's Cabin" on YouTube off the same album (April 1991), the song released one month before "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Nirvana introduced something else altogether that was fresh at the time, but major changes in the Rock landscape were already happening. Just my opinion, but I did purchase "Nevermind" and "In Utero" on release. I need to go back and check the deep cuts, but I'm moving "Rape Me" into the Top 200 if just to spite Walmart as was mentioned on that excellent program I just watched (they had to label it "Waif Me" on the album back cover).

For me personally and for better or worse, there are 5 quintessential things I will forever associate with the 90's!

Grunge music
Bill Clinton
X-Files
Jurassic Park
America Online

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/03/19 07:06 PM

Grunge music... On that program last night (CNN/Tom Hanks) they showed short interview clips of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. The bands didn't seem to care much for the labels "Grunge" and "Seattle Sound". Go figure.

Bill Clinton... Wife's LSU graduation ceremony in 1989, the commemorative speech given by the governor of Arkansas who sounded like a real hick. I remember thinking, "They couldn't do any better than this?" biggrin

X-Files... Never seen it, but I could recognize the theme song from a Family Guy episode.

Jurassic Park... Even better just a few years back in IMAX 3D.

America Online... Already a long-time Compuserver (still am), AOL was for those not as serious about personal computing, probably using a Packard Bell with an SX (vs. DX) processor. biggrin So many CD coasters, worse than junk mail.

++++++++++

For me, other than the music, the 90's were about settling down (as much as I'm capable of), the Olympics (bringing *great* employment opportunities for CAD work), and then leaving Atlanta for Jacksonville (I get antsy when I live in one place for too long). Also, my new '89 CRX Si with Sony CD head unit (a big deal then) which fortunately didn't have those dumbass automatic motorized seatbelts. Oh yeah, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and F-117A, along with all the cool DOS utilities (Quarterdeck and XTree).

My online experience actually started with Prodigy and then Compuserve but then I switched to AOL under one of those "first month free" deals of theirs. In retrospect that was a big mistake!

I remember trying a couple services out (short trials I guess) but I don't remember the names. Netscape maybe? Or was that the browser I was using? Maybe Net Zero? I don't remember except that they all sucked compared with CS, so I sucked up the cost of CS which at the beginning was charging me by the minute, IIRC. But the CS plans kept getting better to compete. I pay $10.00/mth to keep my long-time email (which I never check) and to go dial-up when my satellite ISP is down (which hasn't happened in a while, just gets spotty when the weather is horrible).

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/03/19 07:28 PM

Netscape was the browser that Microsoft successfully killed off by offering IE for free with the OS.

NetZero was initially a "free" ISP (webpages were full of ads) but it went extinct after a couple of years.

I'm taking my time on one more update...

After 3rd listen through my Top 200, "Sand and Water", "Angel", the Shania and a couple of Sheryl's moving down to runner-ups, gotta make room a couple of Green Day's (listening to Hits now) and the rest, just too depressing for a single compilation. "Starseed" was an iTunes user error, also going to runner-ups.

And then I just noticed that "Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2U" wasn't in the 80's like I thought, it just squeezes into the 90's (Jan. 8, 1990) and this one trumps some of those other sad chicky songs (Jewel).

I did not remember Metallica's 'Black Album' coming out in 1991 (Aug.), I would have sworn it came out in the late-80's. I remember "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters" getting lots of airplay on 96Rock (Atlanta). 1991 was a pretty good year for Rock. yep

I do miss having Comcast broadband when I lived in Jax. I don't remember when I first got cable internet, but I'm pretty sure I was still on dial-up when I moved from Atlanta to Jacksonville in late-'96.

++++++++++

I'm very pleased with my current Top 200 now, my weakest song being 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite" I think. I had to keep Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" if just because it's about a member of the Smashing Pumpkins. If I'm not digging the melancholy mood at the moment it comes around, I just skip past it. But it belongs.

I've been working on this project since around the middle of December, sticking first with what I already own and almost all of it burned from CDs, now being supplemented by a handful of Amazon MP3s. I'll probably always have the 'mix tape' mentality. Streaming would give me unlimited selection but I never do well with having too many options at once. Like having too many games installed, I can't stay focused on just one or two.

I'm sticking to the 90's time frame but I may one day do a Top Y2K+ which for me won't come close to 200 songs. The 90's really were a great decade of music, and I'm sure fans of other musical genres that I don't listen to like Country and Rap would agree. In fact, I'd put the best musical decades as 70's > 90's > 80's (I'm not old enough to properly rank the 60's and the 80's are still strong with good girlfriend memories).

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/04/19 08:27 PM

Makes sense. I'm checking some dates, but I did apparently pay attention at least until the mid-to-late-90's (Matchbox Twenty "Yourself or Someone Like You", "Live", "Collective Soul", Creed "Human Clay", etc.) What I've noticed in my CD collection is that I usually bought the first and maybe second album of each band, but no more (some have no more, others have many more). So first album or two and then maybe supplemented by a Greatest Hits later. But then, by the late-90's I was in my late-20's/early-30's so I'm sure age was also a factor on not running out so quickly to the record stores to buy new music.

Debut albums are often great because they can be kind of a greatest hits of that person's or band's creativity until that point (can be collective man-years in the making). But then a year or two later is just not enough time to come up with as much good material, maybe a good hit or two but with a lot of fluff.

++++++++++

EDIT: Also "Californication" was released in 1999. I remember "Scar Tissue" and "Otherside" getting lots of radio air play, not sure about the title track which includes a reference to Kurt Cobain...

As I wrap up my listings (had to purchase two Eminem songs for my Runner-ups: "My Name Is" and "The Real Slim Shady", mainly for comic relief biggrin ), I just wanted to note that there's a lot of music I left off because it doesn't seem 90's to me although it was released in the 90's.

A good example is Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell"...

[Linked Image]

...which included my only Pink Floyd concert in '94 (Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta).

Yet I included Metallica because, regardless of how you feel about it, "Load"/"Reload" brought a change that's considered to be the 90's Metallica. Some even feel that the "Black Album" began that change to a softer more radio-friendly Metallica. I own and love it all ("Kill 'Em All" - "Reload" + "Garage Inc." and "S&M") and which "CD" I grab just depends my mood (or the mood I wish to put myself in).

"The Division Bell" just isn't very 90's sounding to me, more like the continuation of "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" (1987). And that's not a bad thing at all, just not so 90's. Just wanted to clear up why a lot of songs/albums are missing as I'm trying to stick with 90's sound.

++++++++++

Wife and I just watched the 2000's music episode of the program I was talking about earlier ("2000's: I Want My MP3"). Starts with the Napster controversy and ends with Rock being dead and buried. Some interesting quotes (which may not be perfectly quoted)...

"In the early 2000's, the electric guitar was starting to be replaced by song sequencing software."

"Pop stars are becoming Rock stars. DJ's are becoming Rock stars. The only people who aren't becoming Rock stars are Rock stars."

Of all the Rock bands mentioned on the 2000's program, I'd only heard of two bands, Coldplay and Nickleback. And I know them by name only, I didn't recognize any of their music (and assuming they were showing their biggest hits). Bands like The Strokes and so many others mentioned, I'd never even heard of until this morning's program. IMO they're correct, Rock truly is dead and buried, at least in the mainstream. There's always the underground, but I've tested those waters before and came away disappointed by comparison.

Pffft. Who cares, though. I already have enough music to last the rest of my lifetime. band tuner

EDIT: Upon further reflection, two reasons I rated 90's music higher than the 80's was: a) I had enough disposable income in the 90's to purchase the music I was interested in and b) Listening to 90's music didn't mean I stopped listening to 80's and 70's (and some 60's), it just meant I had a new and current option, giving me more music to enjoy.

Thanks, David. cheers

The breakdown (IMO)...

Matthew Sweet. I'm enjoying the two tracks you posted (almost a modern-day Beatles Rock/Pop sound), but I didn't get into the albums so much (from Amazon preview to selected full songs on YouTube). Maybe over time I will as those two tracks continue to grow on me. From performing with Michael Stipe/R.E.M. in the 80's Athens college scene, to being on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, seems like a cool dude.

Now with the other two bands (also with interesting impressive backgrounds...Wikipedia), the full albums did grab me...

Screaming Trees. On the show I mentioned earlier about nineties music, Nancy Wilson of Heart talks about going to Seattle clubs in the early-90's to see bands like Cat Butt and Screaming Trees. "Sweet Oblivion" is a solid album...
Sweet Oblivion - Screaming Trees

Arc Angels. I'm pretty sure this band is mentioned as well, and the self-tiled album is not only good but is only $6.00... smile
Arc Angels - Arc Angels

Nice finds (listening to "Good Time" as I started typing, now "See What Tomorrow Brings"...intro sounds a bit Beatles as well..."Sun King"), thanks again.

++++++++++

My last day on this project, adding a couple of (and my first songs by) Dave Matthews Band to Runner-ups ("#41" and "Grey Street").

Also purchased and will add the greatest love song ever written. The 70's had Frampton, the 80's had Journey, but the 90's had Henry Rollins, keeping romance real...

Beavis approves of this song. biggrin

Speaking of which...

The Beavis And Butt-Head Experience

Amazon Comments:

"I HATE MYSELF AND WANT TO DIE, ORIGINAL VERSION. ENOUGH SAID."

"The Beavis & Butt-head Experience has some awesome 90's rock tracks that you're not going to find anywhere else. For Nirvana fans, this is the only place to find the original mix of the In Utero sessions track "I Hate Myself And Want To Die".

Note that the lyrics are nonsense and not at all related to the bleak title...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Hate_Myself_and_Want_to_Die

You may get "In the someday what's that sound?" stuck in your head, though. The song to me is much better than the fillers on "Nevermind" and "In Utero".

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/08/19 11:26 PM

Glad you've enjoyed it, PM. smile I know I sure have.

I'm going to post my final listings tonight, but if something pops up in the future, I'll look into it. This is how I'm going to do it, with three listings of songs:

1. Top 200 90's.
2. Runner-up 90's (probably around 70 songs).
3. Y2K+ (probably around 30 songs).

2. and 3. will = exactly 100 songs, for a 300 song total.

I'm doing it this way, not just to limit the number of songs, but to make three or four MP3 CDs for my car (has no USB support and I like the idea of old-school 90's CDs). I'll also have a flash drive version.

About the only Y2K+ band I know is Evanescence, so I won't have many songs on that final listing.

++++++++++

Quick story of how I know of Evanescence...

My niece was going through a teenage Goth(?) phase and was playing "Bring Me To Life." I couldn't believe that I actually recognized a song that she was listening to (after so many that I didn't). I didn't know who or what it was, but I'd heard it on a Falcon video (which I still have, of course)...

ECV56_ARV_cas.mpeg
(ECV-56 CONDOR ***OPERATION AL ROJO VIVO (Operation RED_HOT)*** ALA FALCON 4.0
CAS (features an A-10)

Scripted by: Roy "Sombra" Vazquez
Coordination: Pablo "Valkiria" Diez, Roy "Skull One" Reyes
...along with some other names, including a dedication to Nicole Hammer.

SuperPAK 3 f4ut (Falcon 4 Unified Team).

If not for SimHQ I wouldn't know half of the "newer" songs that I do...which still isn't many. smile

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/09/19 03:34 PM

It's never too late, David. It's just that I've run out of days and energy to put the amount of time into it that I have been, so updating will now go much slower. Late last night I was working on the latest listings graphics for my first post and fell asleep in my office chair. sleepy

But please keep'um coming as you think of them, I'll eventually get to them. BTW, I already have four of those Smashing Pumpkins as well as the Mazzy Star but that's ok, I enjoy the videos ("Tonight, Tonight" won awards, IIRC). Cracker's "Low"...I remember that one!

I know that my musical tastes mostly reflects the stereotypical white American male in his early 50's who still enjoys vintage radio-friendly Rock. I don't branch too far from that, so it's always a nice surprise to find a new song (often one I've just forgotten about and that never made it into my music library).

But sometimes it's something completely new to me, like these back-to-back tunes from Arc Angels' self-titled album (some Funk followed by Groove)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YciYTArmmrw

==========
"The band was composed of guitarist and singers Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton and two former members of Stevie Ray Vaughan's band Double Trouble, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon."

"In recent years, Bramhall has played guitar in Eric Clapton's band and toured with Roger Waters."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_Angels
==========

Song used for cool SRV tribute...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28pp5ULFMlQ

And *that's* why I created this thread! smile I'm about to post final listings for a while but I'll keep updating, keeping it at 300 songs total (~22 hours of music).

++++++++++

I've also learned a lot about 90's bands and music the past few days. For example, I had no idea that Creed was so hated! biggrin I typically ignore their religious overtones and tattered history, because even their deep cuts appeal to me musically...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsdUsVvBGIw

...and while I'm serious about music in general (by far my favorite medium), I don't take the music or musicians too seriously. But I'm not going to pretend that I don't like Creed. exitstageleft

My favorite Creed video ("One")... smile

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/09/19 05:19 PM

Listings updated on first two posts. I'll update again in the future as weaker songs get replaced. BTW, I kept the one Pink Floyd song in the runner-ups because, as with a couple others, it's a song about historic events at the beginning of the decade.

Music is so subjective, I know. I figure that with a Top 200 and another 100 of runner-ups and handful of Y2K+ songs, most here could choose at least 50 of my 300 favorite 90's songs and make their own playlist for a day. But, maybe not. smile

Indeed it is subjective and I've found that many people's music preferences are heavily influenced by what environment they were raised in.

For example, Country Music. It's been my experience that the vast majority of people I know who like Country Music like it because it is what they were raised with. In other words, they were raised "country".

I can count on one hand the number of people I know who discovered Country Music as an adult and then ended up enjoying it.

Oh, no doubt.

Since you mentioned Country Music...my cut-off for Country is early-to-mid 80's Alabama, but nothing more recent than that. I can tolerate some Brad Paisley only for my wife and even then, I *much* prefer his songs that have no vocals (he has many pure instrumentals, even cut a mostly instrumental album). I can listen to him play all day as long as he keeps his mouth shut. smile

Yet I can groove so hard to old Merle, George, Willie, etc. (at least the songs on their Hits compilations)! But that's because those songs remind me of good times and people. I could use older songs like "The Grand Tour" or "The Door" as examples, but here's something possibly more palatable for non-fans (besides "He Stopped Loving Her Today")...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi3GgoLtlWk

Hey, I'm going to do an old Country Music thread one day! biggrin I do look forward to going back to Nashville (their downtown Classic Rock nightlife is freaking unbelievable) and getting a proper tour of The Grand Ole Opry.

So maybe it's the environment in which you're raised (for me that would be in a mostly rural lower middle-class all white neighborhood) as well as your experiences. I don't know what, if any, impact your parent's music might have on you growing up. My father's favorite artists were/are Johnny Cash, CCR and James Brown. My mother's (an amateur pianist) favorite artists are Roy Orbison, Fats Domino, and anything Classical. My older brother listened to what's now Classic Rock (Beatles, Pink Floyd, Eagles, ELO, EL&P, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Boston, etc.) but also ConFunkShun, Gap Band (III), George Benson, EW&F...stuff like that. Lots of influences there, along with my brother constantly upgrading his Hi-Fi components. Rush was all mine, he also never got into my old Country and I never got into his old Blues (Muddy Waters stuff).

Both my brother (5 years older) and father (80) know a lot more about current artists and pop culture in general than I do. Brother, "You never heard of Imagine Dragons?" "Nope."

MarkG, if you've got 'Fade Into You' by Mazzy Star, you may as well include 'Halah'.
Posted By: MarkG

Re: My Top 200 90’s tunes (mostly Grunge/Alternative) - 01/12/19 07:55 PM

That one is pretty good too, Snap. I'd never heard of Mazzy Star and a few others listed until I purchased some 'Hits of the 90's' type CD's. You can probably tell when I enjoy a full album ("Cracked Rear View", "Automatic for the People", "Human Clay", "Live", etc.) as I also include deep cuts. But for many others I only know the one hit and just never dug deeper (or maybe I have and didn't care or it).

++++++++++

I watched a documentary last night on the life of Kurt Cobain. I thought it was good, I knew very little of what was presented on the program.

Something interesting was that apparently Kurt miss-understood what somewhat had written on a wall, "Kurt Cobain smells like Teen Spirit." He took it to mean something deeper when it fact it was a joke that he smelled like his girlfriend at the time who wore Teen Spirit deodorant. He wrote the song near the conclusion of recording Nervermind and after learning what the title meant, came to despise it (along with the overwhelming fame it brought him). So the story goes.

I do appreciate more of the songs on Nirvana's three albums (although I don't have the complete first album Bleach [1989]) as they're mostly written (sometimes abstractly) about his life. Now I know what, and who, some of their songs are about. The impression I got from the documentary was that Kurt would have been happier to let Nirvana, along with his ever increasing fame, die off after their third album In Utero, for Nirvana to be just another band that makes one or two successful albums and then falls into obscurity. He certainly didn't seem interested at all in the rich and famous lifestyle (Courtney drives home in a new Lexus, Kurt thinks his banged-up beater is good enough). But the pressure to keep the momentum going, his worsening heroin habit and problems with depression were just too much.

Now I'm curious as to what Teen Spirit actually smells like...
