ETA I'm not a big fan of the remastered version of the album, with Bob Daisley (bass) and especially Lee Kerslake (drums) replaced by Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin, respectively.

I'm listening to hold music for Columbus Bank and Trust customer care. It is a suicide inducing loop of piano, drums, guitar, and drums. They are currently assisting other customers and thanking me for my patience.

Remembered this gem and had to listen again. Tragedy...an all metal Bee Gees tribute band. A bit campy but fun video...but a sweet 80s metal vibe that's really not too bad.

just bought the new Shinedown disk: Threat to Survive. A little more pop than their earlier stuff which has ticked off some fans but it's really growing on me.
They played this song in Boston when we saw them this summer, bringing my 2 boys (14 &11) to see them and Breaking Benjamin in Nov.

Just listened to one of the all-time classics tonight. What an incredible album! Track 1 has been overplayed far past the point of being ridiculous and is the weakest track IMO, but the rest of the album is simply without compare.

A river a mountain to be crossed the sunshine in mountains sometimes lost around the south side so cold that we cried were we ever colder on that day a million miles away it seemed from all of eternity
Move forward was my friends only cry in deeper to somewhere we could lie and rest for the day with cold in the way were we ever colder on that day a million miles away it seemed from all of eternity
The moments seemed lost in all the noise a snow storm a stimulating voice of warmth of the sky of warmth when you die were we ever warmer on that day a million miles away we seemed for all of eternity
The sunshine in mountains sometimes lost the river can disregard the cost and melt in the sky warmth when you die were we ever warmer on that day a million miles away we seemed from all of eternity

Today is the 83rd anniversary of the release of this icon of movies and film. Cinema owes much to this movie. It pioneered SFX and in some cases invented them. It opened the gates for movies to have soundtracks specifically composed for individual movies instead of music libraries. Many of the directors we've come to enjoy have been inspired by this 25 foot ape and without him we may not have had the movie experiences we love now.

That is a live recording at the Fillmore East, and the venue (and/or light show) ran the movie (or perhaps just the ending Empire State scene) while the group was setting up. The cheers are I believe for the ape catching the biplane.

It is on Spotify if you want to take a listen, I just signed up for a free account and it is working.
The town of Peer is quite famous around here for it's music, there are a few smaller festivals in the area but the main one is Blues Peer which occurs in the second half of July http://www.bluesfestival.be/en/
The music is a bit too bluesy for me tho, and the only name I recognise from the line up this year is Taj Mahal whom I did listen to in the early 70s

Day 1: This would be the day to go if you only do 1
Brian Setzer was the lead singer guitarist for The Stray Cats - he has been doing The Brian Setzer Orchestra thing for a while now so I am going to look up Rockabilly Riot because that sounds like a visit back to The Stray Cats
Buddy Guy is a legendary blues guitarist and one of the few old Bluesmen still touring, Clapton called him the best guitarist alive.
Day 2:
Larry Graham is one of the best bass players of all time, he was an original member of Sly & the Family Stone before forming his own group Graham Central Station. You may know his biggest solo hit "One in a Million You".
Lucinda Williams has been around for a long time, she started out as a country blues artist but has been in the Americana music lane for a while now, she is considered one of Americas best songwriters.

Ah, I can't find what I want as a single cut, so select 9:02 on the following (there's lots of other great stuff though, this was an overlooked gem - you won't lose by letting it roll on to the next number; I often find 4:28 sliding into my head, and 36:00 right on to the end is pretty solid):

There was a time I had a major crush on Natalie Merchant. Around the early nineties I knew a girl who was starting to make it in the music business. The 10,000 Maniacs were playing the Fox theater here in Detroit, and my friend had backstage passes. I got to meet Natalie for a quick second. She did not seem very nice at all. I was disappointed. I didn't ask for an autograph or anything. All I said was Hello, nice to meet you. Maybe I caught her on a bad day. The concert was great though. Her voice is still intoxicating to me.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 05/18/1612:18 AM
Well it's summer now, so I am listening to my ignorant neighbors next store again. Country music (really crappy kind) 12 hours a day. They have 4 adult boys who live at home. They are all big (played college hockey) so I can't fight them. They have friends on the police force so there is no help there. The neighbor on the other side is a nice southern gentleman that I think is going to go postal on them one night. They have a pool and they are all drunks, so summer is not quite around here. We are working on selling the house, but will have to do it in the summer.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 05/18/1609:19 AM
My cousin had a problem like that: they invested in a very big stereo, and lots of bagpipe music, which they would trot out whenever things across the fence got out of hand. If it were me, I'd play the bagpipe on one channel, and gamelan on the other channel. Ornette Colman would be another possibility.
...Yeah, try opening both of these at the same time:
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 05/18/1609:32 AM
...I've been letting that combination run a while in the background while I read the fora, and I'm finding it quite intriguing. They go really well together
I think it would probably be quite edifying for someone whose exposure was mostly confined to three chord Nashville corporate product.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 05/21/1612:05 AM
Thanks they are having a party again tonight in the backyard. They now have an even louder stereo. The neighbors on their other side but up a legal fence in their front yard to keep the bastards from peeing on the side of their house at 03:00 AM. So now the white trash goons are mad and are upping the anti. Like I said they are four big boys with many big frat boy wanna be loser drunks over all the time. They are friends with the cops, so no help there. I have been getting video and audio to document. I am fighting cancer right now, and am on chemo so a fist fight with a bunch of young drunk a holes is out of the question, plus I am 51. The other neighbor is thinking about hooking a 110 line to the chain link fence so when they pee on it they get a surprise. I told him I prefer a 220 line.
Good choice U-96. It's got a nice beat, and you can dance to it. I wish I had some knd of impulse beam that I could knock out there electrical power for a while. Going to be a long summer. I hope my other neighbor doesn't snap, cause he is getting close. But he is 72. Could use some Marines. LOL!
Great band, a favorite of mine. If you don't already know they started out as Bang Bang Bang, then changed to American Bang (due to another band with same name), then they became The Cadillac Black annnnd finally(?) The Cadillac Three (the videos above).
Bang Bang Bang - Traffic (from the album "I Shot the King") - I love this song so much
American Bang - Whiskey Walk (from the album "American Bang")

I really enjoyed season 1 of Preacher. After watching the first episode I'm like, WTF was that? After watching the last episode I'm anxious for season 2. Crazy concept, really good sound score, preacher, vampire, ex-lover, Texas town, etc. based on a comic book.

LOL, ok, here's what I was listening to off YT at work:
Theme from Magnificent Seven Theme from Bonanza Theme from The Good The Bad and the Ugly Theme from Green Acres Theme from Mr Ed I Love a Rainy Night Queen of Hearts Broken Wings
All based on looking at the links on the right side and clicking on one after the previous song ended.
My first crush. Well I was five and she made me feel all funny in places. I felt then like I did when I was older sneaking views of Playboy - like I shouldn't be looking at this album cover.

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 05/11/1706:51 PM
Very cool. I always thought maybe there was some explanation to Brad taking his life in the lyrics to this song. Success, money, fame, etc., and still something missing.

Oliver Schroer
In May 2004, fiddler/composer Oliver Schroer set out with three companions to walk along the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrim trail that meanders across France and Spain. Over the course of two months, the four companions walked 1,000 km in the footsteps of their medieval brothers and sisters. Certain things may have changed since medieval times pilgrims are less likely to be eaten by bears or to be robbed by gangs of raiding mountaineers as they cross the Pyrennées. Yet the mechanics of walking have not changed in 1,200 years, and so they endured similar hardships, pains and tribulations along the way. Along with the joys of making a long journey on foot, of being totally immersed in a slowly changing landscape and experiencing it with all of the senses
In 2007, Schroer was diagnosed with leukemia, which proved to be untreatable. A tribute concert for Schroer was held on February 19, 2008 at Hugh's Room in Toronto. It featured the Twisted String Project, seventeen kids, aged 9 through 18, led by two of Oliver's students. They raised the money through private donations to fly to Toronto from the B.C. coast, just so they could take part in the concerts. CBC Radio 2 recorded the concert, which aired on Canada Live on April 7, 2008.
Schroer's last concert was performed on June 5, 2008. In a letter to his fans on April 30 when he first announced his intention to do this concert, he called it "Olivers Last Concert on his Tour of this Planet". He asked that his sold-out audience clap, not cry, and apologized for not being his normal glad-handing self; the risk of infection from personal contact would have been much too great. The subsequent Globe and Mail review called Schroer, an investigative fiddler.
During his final illness, Schroer said of his compositions, "I used to write a lot of jigs, reels and waltzes - as a matter of fact I still do. But over the years new kinds of melodies emerged - more rarefied, harder to pin down. There were prayers, incantations, whimsies, melismas, mysteriosos, heisenbergs, fractal reels, forest blues, blessings.... They are not so much entertainment tunes, but music that expresses other important things about my relationship to life. This music is, dare I say, more spiritual."
Schroer composed his final piece of music, Poise, on July 2, 2008. He died the following morning as a result of his leukemia. His last words were, "Well, I guess no excursions today

We get CD's left in company cars that we pick up all the time, a lot of home made ones also and they are all usually hit or miss on artist(s). Most I check if any of our drivers want, if not I have a stack somewhere, but last week I got disc one of a Judas Priest greatest hit set and was cranking that last night at home. I've heard it called by different names All over the world, but it's all the same Now, there's so many ways to make love A million ways, I've been thinking of
Oh yeah

So many things can get you high I'm gonna try em all just once before I die And you can analyze this situation To me it's all just mental masturbation

Now quickly, check the hands on the clock It's 8:05, it's time to rock
And this world can disagree They don't understand how it can be And it's not my point of view It's a fact, and you know that it's true
[Chorus]
Crank up the drums, crank out the bass Crank up my Les Paul in your face

You just have to Love when Page and Plant work on anything together. Page works his magic on tracks one(Heaven Knows) and 3(Tall Cool One). I saw this Concert live at the Fox Theater and almost got thrown out for pushing a Big Severely Drunk European dude down over the next set of seats in front of us for being a mouthy drunk FW. I didn't party at all at this point in my life, so the ushers knew this tard was the instigator. The ushers made him and his girl move to the end of the row and within 1 minute he fell and slid about 20 feet down the stairs. Never saw him again, which was a good thing because I would have ended up in jail for beating his A$$! It seems once one quits drinking & partying that one becomes a magnet that attracts those obnoxiously drunk people at concerts. For any that might think, instant karma, I never was in or started a fight at a concert while I was a partier, LOL, so your wrong!!! The best solution I found was to go to Christian concerts. Anyway, Now and Zen is a great album to sit down at the kit and work up a little sweat with some legends at play!A must for any Plant fan. Really Love Coverdale Page also. This album seriously rocks! Crank it up!!! <--- these guys Head bang perfectly to the first Song, Shake My Tree!!! --->
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 05/06/1811:34 AM
I have most of Robert Plant´s solo work, up on till "Mighty ReArranger". I think it´s really mature stuff, and albums like "Now and Zen" or "Manic Nirvana" were ahead of there time when they came out. Great stuff all over, when your good, your good!
It´s hard for me to Imagen why someone would want to get stoked at a Robert Plant concert! I mean althought I quit drinking/partying some years ago, It´s not like I would do that at a Robert Plant concert. I would if it was someone like "The Toy Dolls", or any party band, but Iam just to chilled out for that now. But yeah, I get what you mean by "animal magnatisime" hahaha!
Imitations can never match the real thing, of course. But for only $13.00 and front row standing, 3-shots of vodka or whisky as we walk the 1/2 mile to venue for a nice buzz at show opening, it's a pretty good bargain, IMO.
This band gets praise on musician boards from guys that otherwise shun tribute/cover bands. And it's always nice seeing younger people totally getting into old-school Rock.

I was watching the man on the tightrope He was doing his best to stay up He was swaying from side to side And the crowd around him cried
And the nails of the lady beside me Were digging into my skin And her breathing was becoming excited As they let the lions in She said Fall, why don't you fall for me now? Fall, why don't you fall for me now? Fall, why don't you fall for me now?
With the smell of the beast in my nostrils And a look of pure fear in my eye The king of the jungle came forward And the crowd began to sigh
And the lady who'd been sitting beside me Was going around and around And the clown who’d been riding the cycle Was lying upon the ground He said Fall, why don't you fall for my now? Fall, why don't you fall for me now? Fall, why don't you fall for me now?
Come on and take me to the circus I wanna see the lion I wanna see the tiger I wanna see the chimpanzee The chimpanzee wanna see me ... all right Take me to the circus Come on and take me to the circus Come on and take me to the circus Take me to the circus Take me to the circus Come on and take me to the circus Come on and take me to the circus Take me to the circus Take me to the circus Take me to the circus
You know I'm going home to my mama And hang on to her apron strings I've had enough of creeps in the circus And none of them are in the ring
You know I'm going home to my mama And hang on to her apron strings I've had enough of life in the circus With animals and everything She said Fall, why don't you fall for me now? Fall, why don't you fall for me now? Fall, why don't you fall for me now?

Dang Panzermeyer, that's hardcore Bavarian! This girl is into bad boys! How did you come across this? I seriously just had a flashback to when I watched videos like this in the 70s. My Oma used to watch a show called "Zum Blauen Bock" which was sort of a Bavarian equivalent to American Bandstand and featured German Volksmuzik. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zum_Blauen_Bock

Geddy Lee explained the genesis of the song in an interview:
The seeds for the song were planted nearly 60 years ago in April 1945 when British and Canadian soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. Lee's mother, Manya (now Mary) Rubenstein, was among the survivors. (His father, Morris Weinrib, was liberated from the Dachau concentration camp a few weeks later.) The whole album "Grace Under Pressure," says Lee, who was born Gary Lee Weinrib, "is about being on the brink and having the courage and strength to survive."
Though "Red Sector A," like much of the album from which it comes, is set in a bleak, apocalyptic future, what Lee calls "the psychology" of the song comes directly from a story his mother told him about the day she was liberated.
I once asked my mother her first thoughts upon being liberated," Lee says during a phone conversation. "She didn't believe [liberation] was possible. She didn't believe that if there was a society outside the camp how they could allow this to exist, so she believed society was done in."[1]

Interesting, thanks! It is my fav band since 1977, thus my alias.

Recently I was refreshing our MP3 playlists (mostly for long walks, outdoors and treadmill), sitting cozily together with the laptop and choosing songs. I browse and organize in iTunes, either syncing with our iPod Shuffles or manually copying a playlist to our new MP3 players. I noted that she was going heavy on the Eagles and reflected that, other than a couple of later singles like Seven Bridges Road, they have only 3 albums that I (and probably most fans) even care about...
Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) Hotel California (1977) The Long Run (1979)
...but dam these are packed with a lot of good songs! What's the worst song in that collection? I dunno...The Disco Strangler? And I still listen to it.
Unfortunately, we never saw the Eagles in concert together (I saw them in '94? but she was in Iowa on business travel). To me their music never gets old, even the song that's joked about as being so 'white guy music' (posted below).

Here goes a classic 80s hit that many may not remember. I still have the Max Webster album somewhere. Universal Juveniles I think it was called. Enjoy a little Max Webster and Rush collaboration, with duel drummers as I recall. Ahhhhhh the 80s!
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 02/05/1902:28 PM
I'm currently immersing myself in the work of Gianna Nannini. As a boy I lived in a part of Denmark where we started getting television from Germany, and the influence of Italian culture and music on German television was the reason I got into some Italian Pop/Rock. If the familly name sounds familiar.... Gianna's brother is Alessandro Nannini, the ex-racing driver.
Even in a Google translation the words are quite beautiful.
Many seas and rivers will cross You will find me inside your land Turbines and storms I will ride I will fly among the lightning to have you
Wonderful creature You are alone in the world Wonderful fear To have you next Eyes of sun burn me in the middle of the heart I love wonderful life
Light of my eyes shines on me I want a thousand moons to caress you I hang from your dreams, I watch over you Do not wake up, do not wake up again ...
Wonderful creature You are alone in the world Wonderful fear To have you next Sun eyes The words tremble I love wonderful life
Wonderful creature A slow kiss Wonderful fear To have you next Suddenly you come down to paradise I'm dying of wonderful love ...

Next week at this time I'll be on the road. Detailed itinerary planning starts tonight, no longer Big Apple virgins so crash planning will do this time...

Weather remains atrocious, wife staying home today. Digging through my music library, I needed something that reflects my usual Friday mood but with 'thunder and lightning'. Filling the house up with some Seger.
Man, they sure don't make music like this anymore (need to add Night Moves [1976] and Against the Wind [1980] to my comprehensive list of favorite albums)...

^ Lol on the drunk ordering.
Other than a daily glass of complementary wine at a NYC hotel and complementary champagne at a swanky bed and breakfast dinner, I've had no booze so far this year. No *real* booze anyway. It didn't even occur to me until recently when I posted a Dec. pic of my bar (with Saturn V cardboard model). The bottles look the same as the pic with all the good stuff still unopened (replenished at Thanksgiving).
Maybe I'll change that tonight, after going out for a rare and much deserved burger and shake at LSU (I can taste it already)... http://fatcowburgers.com/

Always had a passion with muting anything Jean-Michel Jarre has ever created, besides "En Attendant Cousteau" (Waiting for Cousteau). Anything else from him, no thx.

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/27/1907:58 AM
Some older things from the 70's:
Stealers Wheel - They had only three albums but each of them was absolutely fantastic
- Stealers Wheel 1972 - Ferguslie Park 1974 - Right or Wrong 1975
Stuck in the middle - A lot of people know it from the movie "Reservoir Dogs"
and one from Gerry Rafferty's (he was also band member and the singer of Stealers Wheel) album "City To City - 1978" (also a must have ) I think it's one, that nearly everyone could remember
Another excellent band - Badfinger
And some unforgettable songs from the 60's to the early-mid 70's I came arround the last days hearing music with my revived hifi system again
A band who had only two albums, but absolutely worth having them (Stretch - You Can't Beat Your Brain For Entertainment 1976 / Live Blood 1977)
also an excellent album - most know the tracks "Reelin' In the Years" and "Do It Again", this is my favorite number of the album
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/27/1908:44 AM
Billy Thorpe!
That was my second live show, I must have been 15 then. He opened for Triumph and his first song was actuallly Children of the Sun! This was at Gusman Hall, Miami Florida. Although after looking up Gusman Hall, it dosen´t look like what I remember. I remember it as a small theater in downtown Miami. Might have my memories/places mixed up!
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/27/1909:01 AM
Thank's also!
I'm in memories too, at the moment That's the reason I posted a bit much
Finally I'm able to hear my music again, after two years of abstinence. During my move and the whole time before and after it I only had a small bluetooth-box and my smartphone for hearing music
The voluminous sound now is like a time machine, back to my younger days
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/27/1909:22 AM
And two girls that were also absolutely amazing at playing the guitar ( and real nice looking of course ) - Heart The first one is my absolute favorite track

Yes! And also don't forget Stevie Nicks
Here is a number from a little newer album called Raising Sand. It's Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) with Alison Kraus. I like this track soooo much!!! The rest of the album ist totally different, but also really good. It sounds a bit more country like.
I'm very flexible with music, the only things I really do not hear is trash metal, "bavarian Volksmusik" , and Techno or something that was called "Neue Deutsche Welle" here in Germany.
And for sure also nothing that's called "Schlager" here in Germany. This makes me really ill
I always prefered english or american music, cause I think it's the best language for singing. Only exception are some austrian songwriters with real hard sociocritical lyrics.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/27/1902:24 PM
Ok it´s called "thrash metal" and not trash metal, but no worries haha.
I didn´t like it either till I played in a thrash band, and saw Metallica on there Master of Puppets tour here in EU.
I have all of Robert Plants solo albums. Happy to say I like each and every one of them, not one song that I don´t like, some were even ahead of there time.

Yes, that really was a typo, also I did not like it much
I also like Metallica for sure and have some of their albums also. But I wouldn't call it real thrash metall. There are some other bands out there you really only hear repeating the same monotonous riffs over and over again. I really like hard music, but there also has to be some sort of solo guitar parts in it. I love guitar, but never had the time to really learn it playing. My son is playing every minute of it's free time.
His great idol is Stevie Ray Vaughan --> this is a long way to go for him , but I'm so proud that he did was his dad never was able to do.

Yeah, I know what you mean with regards to thrash compositions, but as with other bands that started the bay area thrash scene Metallica was one of them.
I like his big brother too...
and also The Fabulous Thunderbirds, also from Austin...

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/27/1905:56 PM
I really enjoy "gypsy swing/waltz", maybe due to that my late father loved Glenn Miller and would play him (among other great swing artist) every Sunday morning at home when I was a kid.

Sadly not, I'm no great reader, I must admit. If I'm reading a book at all, it's mostly some technical stuff
Angelo Debarre, wow what a great guitar player. I wish I could also play guitar, but I have only started a bit with it many years ago and never had enough patience for it.
I've given a guitar to my son as he was 14 years old. The first year he played not really much, but then he suddenly begins to exercise like crazy
Since that time (he is nearly 21 years old now) he really plays every single minute of his free time. I admire his patience so much and sometimes I'm a little bit envious, cause I really would love to play like him also
Now at my older days I'm much more patient, compared to the past, but I have problems with my fingers caused by a neuropathy. So playing guitar will stay a dream forever
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/28/1907:09 AM
My dad (he's 72 years old now), walked off his home as he was a young man and went to Sweden.
He met some guys there playing in a band called "The Shamrocks". He toured with them and also played sometimes the drums. Later as he met my mother, those times were over
He is still in contact with some of those guys and sometimes they met each other, especially if old bands of the past give a little concert again. The last time they met was as "The Marmelade" was in Bonn in 2016.
Must have been a great day, with a lot of beers, of course
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/28/1910:17 AM
Ok, I think I have to stop here now, cause I totally jammed this thread
Sorry for this
I just have been that enthusiastic, cause I had right the last days, the chance to hear all my music again since more than two years.
I will also inherit the LP collection of my father somewhere in future, but I hope this will be many, many years later. We do still meet each other and of course my son is always present at those meetings of three generations, too
I think I will give him the LP collection and also my whole music collection, cause he's much more an enthusiast as I ever was. I think it's in the right hands then.
I also started with collecting simulations at the late 80's and have so much of them too. I think I have to do a little clean up with all the things I've collected sometime in the nearer future, also I did not like this idea very much.
My girlfriend really respects my hobbies and also always stood behind this crazy guy, I am, but you never should overstep the mark
@Red2112
Let's stay in contact here in the forum. I saw that you are a flightsim fan also. Sadly I do not much fly with cicvil aircraft, and also do not own the P3D (don't laugh, I'm still mostly with the old FS9, cause I have tons of addons for it) but I think this will change again if the new MSFS really does what they promise.

And another scarry one It's from the movie "The Mothman Prophecies" with Richard Gere (a must have seen movie!)
There are two versions of this song, I prefer this one. P.S: Real good background sound for playing games like Slender - The Arrival or something similar

saw ya on the Steel Beast forum!
Yes, as said I'm collecting all kind of combat, most flight sim and also racing simulations since 1988, so Steel Beast is an absolutely must have It's also the only modern tank sim at the moment.
Sadly I did not have the time to really use it the last few years, I hope this will change now. Version 4.1 will be a first day after release buy. Hope it will be already available this July
P.S: Ok Steel Beasts is history now, cause there isn't any way to buy it for me . The only way to get it is the use of a creditcard and here only selected cards. American Express is not assisted any more. No PayPal, no Steam or comparable and also no AMEX. I'm not willing to obtain another creditcard only for SB.
Does anyone remember this? Also a number from the late 80's. And with a real "gooseflesh-effect" (don't know how you are calling this in English)

Jeff Goldblum (yes, that Jeff Goldblum) & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra with Haley Reinhart . I didn't know the man could do this. Haley I knew about, she's a fantastic singer.
Man, there's no song that brings me back to this time of year in the mid-80's like this one!
Working part-time evenings after school (holidays were the busiest), mopping a nasty crowded grocery store (almost closing time) while listening to this song and watching the front glass for my girlfriend's raggedy old car to pick me up (I didn't have a car yet). Yeah, we did some fun reminiscing today as I played with our new laptop.

Just hit anniversary #32 (dam time flies), packing right now for a little getaway. Not coming back online until I've caught up with some things which might take awhile.

Back to Rock.
Every other month or so I look over my music library and try to figure out what I'm missing, usually a forgotten guitar-heavy slower jam that reminds me of my teenage years (preferably with a little heartbreak thrown in vs. positive sap). This style of music motivates me like no other, to push myself physically (currently training for several 5k's, two in one day on the 29th) and to appreciate what I have.
I'd remembered just a couple of broken lyrics from this gem and finally through searches, I figured out what it was (and I'd never even heard of this Dutch band)...

Wow, I remember this song from back in the day hearing it here but totally forgot about Vandenberg as a band back in the 80's. It looks like this song was it for them and the guitarist Van Den Burg ended up in Whitesnake not long after this.
I was poking through that list from the Monsters of Rock cruise I posted a little ways back and pulled this one up that I rocked to on the radio back in the 80's

Yeah, I admit I listen to this (usually when taking a break from Soft Rock). It was the Angel song though that I remember seeing on Soul Train in 1980(?). I think she was my same age (13) which was not so common back then to have kid performers like it is today.

Here's a couple of tunes from bands that get plenty of hate as corporate/arena rockers with too much sap, etc., if not a little respect from a handful of popular rockin' tunes. But IMO, their discography is great and entire albums can be pretty darn good beyond the hits...

Every ~9th Wednesday I start a new 9-week study term, which starts again in a couple of days. Today I'm wrapping up some loose ends on my current term, and went back to a small ASM project I'd been working on that I couldn't get to run properly. Finally I realized [at least one] mistake!
Conditional opcode "JZ" (Jump if Zero) tests CPU register flag ZF (16-bit...Zero flag) and jumps to a labeled subroutine if the last instruction result is zero (decrementing in a loop). This causes ZF to be set to 1, although what it really means is that zero has been set. It's the condition of setting zero you're testing for, not the 0 flag bit itself (since 1 = true).
"JNZ" (Jump if Not Zero) works the opposite...despite the name, you actually jump *for* zero [bit]!

This date, 45 years ago, Pink Floyd plays in Hamilton Ontario, of all places. 55,000 descend on the residential area stadium. It is the last date on Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here Tour. The decision is made to use up all remaining pyro. The explosions shatter windows in surrounding homes. (I believe the explosions are at the climax of the encore of Echoes) The scoreboard is destroyed. Nick Mason mentions this show twice in his book. Thankfully fantastic audio is available.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/03/2009:15 AM
In most cases, I think the earlier albums are always the best in my opinion.
Most bands run our of ideas after the 3rd/4th album, or are presured by there lable to head in a different (more comercial) direction. There are exceptions of course.
I like all of there albums up until "El Loco". I don´t dislike the rest but I find they lose a bit of what there core music was about on the newer albums after El Loco.. A similar thing to what happened to Aerosmith, and not to mention alot of other bands.
Side 1: "Tush", "Waitin' for the Bus", "Jesus Just Left Chicago", "Francine", "Just Got Paid" Side 2: "La Grange", "Blue Jean Blues", "Backdoor Love Affair", "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers", "Heard It on the X"

Same with DLR Van Halen, some fans panning 1984 for being too synth-heavy in hits like "Jump" and "I'll Wait" (which I like but agree they're not as good and suffer from 80's influences).
But there's still some very good non-synth Rock on that album...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/18/2003:14 PM
Hard to let it go, two final selections from Van Halen, both DLR and Sammy (I enjoy both versions of VH and like how the band matured to the darker Balance [1995] album)...
I believe this (1996) was the last VH collaboration with Hagar (rumor has it Eddie and Sammy were not getting along, Ed succumbing to his abusive demons)...

Foxes and Fossils have released a new cover of the song "Telling Me Lies" by supergroup Trio - I know that is the name of the album and not the group but it is easier to say
The Swamp Song - 00:40 Acquiesce - 03:40 Supersonic - 07:33 Hello - 12:36 Some Might Say - 15:51 Shakermaker - 21:22 Roll With It - 26:23 Round Are Way (Ending with Up In The Sky) - 31:11 Cigarettes & Alcohol - 36:37 Live Forever - 41:25 Champagne Supernova - 46:20
Noel Gallahger's Acoustic Set Wonderwall - 56:26 Cast No Shadow - 1:00:40 Morning Glory - 1:05:19
Rest of Electric Set Don't Look Back in Anger - 1:09:55 Whatever (Ending with All The Young Dudes) - 1:14:48 I Am the Walrus (The Beatles cover) (with The Bootleg Beatles) - 1:21:23
My thoughts on this mid-90's British Rock band that completely slipped under my radar back in the day (and not the only one)...
Cons: - Nothing that stood out as fantastic to me, like the usual one or two obviously biggest hits. - Cursing wasn't over-the-top but still seemed strange coming from The Monkees. - Tambourine? Really?
Pros: - It was consistently listenable, that is I never once felt the need to FF to the next song. - Guitar layering was interesting, no song structured soloing that I recall, instead a constant background lead behind rhythm. - Better than expected, good enough to pick up a Greatest Hits from Amazon for further review.
Grade: B- (for Beatles...lol) with high marks for being consistently B-. <- For first listen, that's a nice compliment.

I'm more of a dim-lighted (and dimwitted) 80's power ballad kinda guy (also ambient lightning flashes and/or fireplace flames work). But sometimes you want to surprise your lady with a butt-load of scented candles (~30) and an appropriately weird and subtly suggestive playlist...

Ah hell, it's Friday. Let's do this!
Imagine you're writing a song to include references to pleasuring a woman with your fingers, cunnilingus and intercourse, and with background noises of heightening female arousal!
Now, I'm sure that masterful lyricists like Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. could write it, but could they do it in such a way that the song could be played regularly on family-friendly FM radio in 1975?

Men At Work..."Business as Usual" (1981) and "Cargo" (1983) are *fantastic* albums, IMO! "Two Hearts" (1985) is meh, couple of decent songs on the "Contraband": Hits CD.

I received a text yesterday from a long-time friend from my middle/high school days, the only one I stay in occasional touch with (I never embraced social media). The text was that a mutual friend (the kind of friend you spent the weekend with as kids at each other's home) had succumbed to depression. Just trying to understand how someone once known for perpetually sporting a bigass goofy grin could have had these problems and to this degree. I last saw him in 1988 when he worked at a Dodge dealership, setting up my appointment for getting A/C put into my '87 Dodge Colt.
Anyway, this guy was a big Men AT Work fan (favorite song being "Be Good Johnny" [posted by LB4LB above], probably because his name was Johnny ) and introduced me to non-radio MAW by loaning me his "Business as Usual" LP. This one is for Johnny...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/23/2106:55 PM
For the casual MAW fan, this is really all you need...

I lost my old greatest hits CD for "Three Dog Night" so I bought a new one from Amazon a couple weeks ago so I've been listening to that. I was really disappointed that "Celebrate" was not on this CD for some inexplicable reason.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/25/2102:12 PM
Yeah PM, a Hits compilation can be a disappointment. Sometimes a song title might be included but it's a completely different sounding newer version...
Motley Crue - Greatest Hits (version of "Shout At The Devil"). The Police - Every Breath You Take: The Singles (version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me").
...or an unacceptable shortened version of a favorite song...
Rolling Stones - Forty Licks (shortened version of "Beast of Burden"...missing too much guitar). The Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits 1974-78 (shortened version of "Fly Like an Eagle"). Aerosmith - Greatest Hits (missing bass intro to "Sweet Emotion").
Called the "single" versions. I usually have the full album as well so no big deal, and fortunately going digital (lossless [full album] or MP3 [single song purchase]) lets you easily remedy this in a playlist.
EDIT: You also have to add "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" to "Gord's Gold" which came out a year later than his Hits album, I think. Also (not Hits but missing song related) "When the Tigers Broke Free" is missing on the original "The Final Cut" album (1982), not added until 2004.

That song is a special case since there is the original 1980 version and then the 1986 version but at least the 1986 version has all three original members of the band. As for me personally, I like both versions about the same.

Right, for a reunion they were trying to pull off. I'm the same on accepting most of these newer completely different sounding remakes, listening to them both but always preferring the original.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/25/2103:10 PM
One more that really bothers me...
Any Alan Parsons hits compilation that includes "Eye In The Sky" without the intro of "Sirius" (although technically a short separate song). Again, I have the full album (as pictured above in a previous post) so no biggie, but IMO their Hits should always include both songs as one, and "The Best of Alan Parsons Project" does not. But still not as bad as some really butchered songs like the radio version of "Sweet Child O' Mine" which is missing an entire solo.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/26/2104:31 PM
^ I dunno about that live Alan Parsons above, voice is mixed too loudly (sounds like Karaoke), should be softer. Would loved to have been there anyway.

Joe Jackson... I just might have to dig deeper. Along with "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" I also purchased "Breaking Us In Two" to have his 3 biggest hits (already had "Steppin' Out").

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/28/2102:06 AM
LB4LB, "Wouldn't It Be Good" was the song I was referring to with the Pretty In Pink song above, Nik Kershaw's version being the superior original and the one I listen to (vs. movie cover by Danny Hutton, all other soundtrack songs being originals, I think).
I remember how this sounded on one of my better car systems ('89 CRX Si...12" Rockfords in custom enclosure, MB Quart for hi/mid) back in the day, one of the non-hard rock reasons my hearing could be better today.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/29/2106:20 PM
My guess PM, is some record label pushed them to work with some famous producer to change their sound so that they could tap into a more "lucrative" market by making a more "bland " sound. FM radio was moving away from a harder rock sound to the mellow crap around then. The promise of more money, and of course a Grammy Award too ( why anyone would be proud of winning one of those is beyond me). Seen it happen to way too many good bands.

Foreigner always had a soft side, even on their debut album (although the biggest hits were more rocking: "Feels Like the First Time", "Cold as Ice", "Long, Long Way from Home").
I'm a fan of their first 5 (really 4.5) of 9 albums.
Foreigner (1977) Double Vision (1978) Head Games (1979) 4 (1981) Agent Provocateur (1984)
For example, Double Vision (their best album, IMO) includes hits: "Hot Blooded", "Blue Morning, Blue Day", "Double Vision" and mostly more rockers, but "You're All I Am" is pretty sappy (although I like it).
4 includes hits: "Juke Box Hero" and "Urgent", but also their best sap IMO: "Waiting for a Girl Like You"...
Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You (Official Vinyl Video)
But "I Don't Want to Live Without You"... nah, even *I* can't listen to this one. Bryan Adams and Phil Collins (as examples) also have some enjoyable sap IMO, but they also some that are just too syrupy, even for me.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/29/2109:01 PM
And don't forget that rockers age like the rest of us and musical tastes usually softens with age. I still listen to hardcore 80's Metallica while I'm doing yard work and stuff, but the brain is closed to any *new* Metal (which might be considered soft Metal by today's standards), I only enjoy that which is nostalgic to me now. But I do really enjoy it and will likely never outgrow it.
EDIT: REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling" is another can't do.

I saw Honeymoon Suite at some music festival some where out side Windsor Ontario back in the late 1980's. They had the women going crazy for them. They were a little cheezy, but good fun. I always like the Wave Babies video because of that late 80's beach look the women all had. That was a classic look.

Not just mellow crap but electronic beats also helped ruin "real" Rock, IMO. Maybe synthesizers were ok in moderation (Rush's "Moving Pictures"), but electronic drums were never appropriate for Rock, IMO. But now I look back and think, real Classic Rock was destined to die anyway because no genre lasts forever (except maybe the un-killable cockroach known as Rap). I can now look back at my music library (~1965 to 1995) and appreciate the variety of music that I have, and this includes contemporary Soft Rock as much as it does New Wave and Metal.

Here is one of the most notoriously hated softer songs in Classic Rock history, and I never understood the hate it got (slips on headphones...nice solos, hard drum hits...nicely mixed with harder songs on album [as Styx did so well, also includes "Babe"]...it's ok with me)...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/29/2110:32 PM
When I think of Styx, I think of the great guitar lick in Mrs. America.
This guy is a great music producer. Really good stuff on making music. He's been around for years. Music started leaning on technology a long time ago, and has only got worse. The music suffers, and the art form stagnates.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/29/2111:54 PM
Styx to me is:
Equinox (1975) The Grand Illusion (1977) Pieces of Eight (1978) Cornerstone (1979) Paradise Theatre (1981)
...and a couple songs off Crystal Ball (1976) and Kilroy Was Here (1983).
Occasionally listen to older and newer than those albums, but they don't grab me as much. Love " Miss America".
++++++++++
I watched both videos entirely, very interesting how auto-tune works. He started losing me in 1st video as I had no idea who he was talking about, but then he recovered with musicians like Seal and Lenny Kravitz, the 2nd video mentioning The Go-Go's and Meatloaf, along with other old rockers. Oh, and the most excellent late-Chris Cornell w/Soundgarden.
This made me consider that at no time have I ever listened to music by kids that I can remember. Even Pop-Rock 'teenage heart-throb' Rick Springfield (who my sister loved) was 32 when he released his first hit "Jessie's Girl" in 1981. I guess the youngest musicians I listened to were Def Leppard, their High 'n' Dry (1981...second album) released at an average age of around 20, but they were a known exception for being such talented musicians for their age, as was Rush who were around the same age on their debut album.
++++++++++
Going to post one more sappy Rock song because it's one of my all-time favorite (and pre-girlfriend, so another softie I can't blame on my wife. )...
Always enjoyed that rare moment at a Rush concert when one of them screwed up or had to deal with equipment problems, if just to remind me that they're actually human.

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/30/2102:47 AM
Mark, I thought you might enjoy his channel. You don't necessarily need to be a trained musician to appreciate what he talks about in many of his videos. I have always felt that most humans "feel" music, so all this technology of the last few decades has taken most of that out. I think people like to "hear" the space in between notes, the slightest imperfections of human performance, and the emotion only a human can deliver. Most "music" of the last 20 years has been made for the eyes and not the ears (not my quote). Even live performances now are basically computerized renditions of songs, with the slightest of human input. I think that is why you see many younger people today, actually listening to the stuff we liked as kids. I know young people get tired of hearing us old guys say things like this, and to their credit there are many talented young artists out there. The internet looked for a while that it would be the thing to bring that out, but as usual, big money gets in the way.
Don't stay up too late watching his videos, it's happened a few times to me.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/30/2103:22 AM
EDIT: LB4LB, I read your post above *after* I posted.
I've watched several Rick Beato YT videos tonight and they've been most enjoyable. He's not nearly as critical of new music, even Top 10 Pop music, as I thought he would be.
Anyway, this had me thinking that videos (the official ones on MTV) haven't really done Rock any favors, IMO. I remember watching MTV for the first time in 1984 at my wife's home and was amazed. Before MTV, you might catch a band on SNL or something like that if you were lucky. MTV videos were often downright goofy though, even for the time. And in some cases I think it was better to keep some mystique about a band, knowing only what they looked like by the album packaging (concerts really didn't help as there were no giant screens above the stage yet). Some music I listen to seemed a lot cooler before I saw the video (REO Speedwagon's "Keep On Loving You" comes to mind...although I won't stop listening to it).
But then we'd have no "Hot For Teacher" and other iconic Rock videos so I don't know. Just seems to me that videos are usually great for Pop (MJ's "Billie Jean", a-ha's "Take On Me") but not always good for Rock (and I'm sure Billy Squier agrees).

What I find both hilarious and highly ironic about the whole music video topic is that for YEARS after MTV changed its format to showing mostly reality shows, people were constantly lamenting the demise of MTV and how terrible it was that they dropped music videos. Then came Youtube and now for the vast majority of the consumer market, it's inconceivable to watch music videos anywhere BUT Youtube.

The Beatles were all in their early 20's when they recorded their first album. George was the youngest at 20.
I was going to compare the level of musicianship between Rush's and Def Leppard's debuts and Beatlemania, but that wouldn't be fair since The Beatles were innovators (and at least played their own instruments). The Beatles would quickly mature from attracting mostly screaming girls (although looking at old video, the audience looked much older than a typical boy band crowd).
But 20 seems like a good minimal age for a musician (heck, I was married and living 500+ miles away from home at 20). The ages dropped in the 90's I think, with all the boy bands who I assume were all minors, mid-teens even. Then you had the Pop girl singers (Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera [ages 15 to 18?] vs. Madonna who was 25 for her debut album). There were always exceptions like Michael Jackson.

Yeah, YouTube took over MTV for music videos, and I'm grateful that we have these newer technologies to reminisce the early videos, even if sound quality is sometimes on par with an old Zenith 19" console TV.

I wonder how a 50's man stuck in that time period felt about the 80's? Probably that we were becoming a degenerate society influenced by some popular music. It's the steady downward trend that should be worrisome, each generation wanting to be a little more shocking and risqué than the previous (with kids wanting to irritate their parents). Maybe we should go back to Elvis' hip shaking and start over again?

Ah yes, the Tipper Gore crusade against "evil music". There is so much irony behind that. Let's just say that the Democratic Party of the 1980's era would be considered to be far right extremist by the Democratic Party of today.

Seems to me that 80's chicks had a look for everyone (you could always pick out your type in a group) without going to extremes. The 90's started extremes (i.e. "Heroin Chic") which has never recovered, and now it's also oversized and/or cartoon proportions, often covered in tats and metal. I won't judge though, like with music it changes over time. I'll just stay in the 80's where I belong.

Don't mind me, I had to come back to retrieve my CD briefcase.
Jamming to Fastway and some other new songs I purchased, I thought of one more band that I had completely forgotten about, and I *had* to correct this grievous error before I forgot. Not quite as sexy to me as the Zebra tigress above, or even Pat Benatar, but oh such a pretty 80's look and with talent to back it up. I bought their "Best Of" today for $5.99 (had their debut album on 8-track)...
EDIT: Like Pat Benatar, she's married to the guitarist (they founded the band).

I found the above comprehensive 4-CD box set on sale somewhere and was surprised just how much I enjoyed almost all of it (maybe a half-dozen songs I could take or leave, but never skip...it's that good to me).
Donald Fagen's solo The Nightfly is also one of my favorites (a shared favorite, wife also loves this album and Steely Dan). So we listen to lots of Dan on any road trip.

I wonder why so many 70's to early-80's music videos are the studio versions of songs synced with concert or live footage? My guesses are:
1. Money. I assume it was expensive to get a quality live recording in those days. 2. Acceptance. We didn't mind so much since no one doubted that the artist could pull it off live. Plus, the audio and video on an old tube TV (even the 'big' wooden cabinet console sets) left much to be desired, detail wasted. 3. Music videos made prior to 1981 were for what audience? I don't remember how we even saw them. MTV didn't air until August 1981, and even then cable wasn't popular until the mid-80's.
In any case, as with the first video, it's always nice to see a good live performance...

This is just one example but the music videos that the Beatles made for songs like "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane" and "Paperback Writer" were shown on TV.
I get what you mean though concerning the US. I honestly don't recall seeing music videos of any kind on TV before MTV came around in 1981.

Yeah, I don't remember a music video program on any of the network stations. You might catch a favorite band on Midnight Special. There was also Soul Train and American Bandstand, then came Solid Gold and another one of those shows I don't recall. Also SNL for a 2-song performance. EDIT: But this wasn't music videos.
I also remember an FM radio station playing a Rock album in its entirety every Friday night. My best memory, on my parent's old stereo console, was hearing Eagles' The Long Run. Songs like the less popular "In the City" and "Those Shoes" really got my attention. I thought the whole album was good.
I enjoyed listening to replays of Casey Kasem's American Top 40 when I had XM radio in my car.

I got curious and looked up the track list and yeah, I only know the big 3 hits from that album (The Long Run, I Can't Tell You Why and Heartache Tonight).

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/06/2106:13 PM
I remember back in the 1980's a local FM station (WRIF 101 FM) here in Detroit used to run "Simulcast' concerts on local bands. The radio station would sync up with a local television broadcast (WKBD Channel 50 Detroit) to show live local bands in concert. It was a novel concept at the time. I used to love them. Here's an example (notice the simulcast graphic at beginning of song). I was actually at this concert at the Ritz.. It was one of my favorite local bands.
Here is the same band years later playing locally again. Big difference in recording quality. lol.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/06/2111:01 PM
^ What a fantastic idea, as just about any ordinary FM stereo would still have sounded much better than TV sound, and many had hi-fi FM. The proper names for you young folks is tuner (AM/FM stereo) or (power amp + pre-amp + tuner, integrated in one box = receiver)!
Chad Smith before the 'Peppers, must have been cool.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/12/2103:45 PM
More good local stuff from Detroit FM radio circa 1981. Notice the mullets in full display. This song was a huge local hit, with major airplay. They never made it to the big time though.

<My online break shall be short lived while prepping for possible weather, so I might as well post my Friday picks tonight...in honor of a couple of musicians who passed away recently.>
I'll probably never post a 'bedroom playlist,' but if I did, these two songs would make my top 10 (the 'Stones in my top 3)...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 09/03/2103:51 PM
Lol, PM. Not my speed at all, but there were some big hits on that debut album (and I do occasionally listen to the Beatlemania era, especially the hits).
The early Beatles somewhat reflect my music library timeline (1965-1995...with a few before and after exceptions). " A Hard Day's Night" (1964) and especially "Rubber Soul" (1965) was the real break from that "Love Me Do" stuff, I think.
I have all their albums on CD...need to do another Beatles marathon (and get my acoustic Fender fixed for some play-along).

I've been a huge fan since my high school days and while I like almost all of their early era songs (Please Please Me through Help) their real brilliance for me started with Rubber Soul.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 09/29/2103:48 AM
Its my first time hearing of Big Country and "In a Big Country" MarkG. I liked the song. I'll definitely add it to my 80s music Youtube list. I really enjoyed how the multiple guitar solos played the underling melody like perhaps bagpipes would. It has that lilting, pipes-like quality to it.

Hey guys, I'm posting this from the venue (a place called "My Living Room"). Show's supposed to start at 7 (in less than 10 min.). Just sitting here enjoying my drink making small talk with the Mrs. We have great seats, front and center. Crowd is light.

As always, Rush didn't disappoint! They only played live for about an hour though, then showed some old music videos on the big screen followed by their last documentary.
A couple of concert highlights, including a fantastic closure...
The booze was dirt cheap and unlike Van Halen I didn't have to stand in line to whiz in a sink (didn't know that's where my line was going, hopefully Lakewood Amphitheatre fixed their lack of bathroom facilities)!
EDIT: There used to be a better R40 Jacob's Ladder on YT I think, but I can't find it. The audio/video sync seems off to me on this one.

Except that, as the Molly Ringwalds (local 80's cover band) point out before they play it, Gary Numan's "Cars" is a 1979 cheat. Still sounds 80's though, so we all let it slide.

So I'm at my kitchen table with the game on in the background (Brady's return to Foxborough) and a tune catches my attention, only a few seconds of beginning of song. Oh man, what is it? If only I could remember the lyrics.
Oh yeah, got it (from 1980)...
The J Geils Band Full Version Video Come Back (HD Sound)
I saw this when it was a brand new "MTV World Premiere" video. I had a massive crush on the two women. I was a testosterone-fueled 13 year old kid at the time.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/04/2110:12 PM
Something else I really miss about the 1980's, the musical nerdiness...
I think Rush tops the list with their videos for "Subdivisions", "Distant Early Warning" and the fan-made "Countdown" (which is occasionally posted here), but also the lessor known...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/04/2111:40 PM
J. Geils was HUGE around here. Their concerts were legendary parties. I always remember this goofy a$$ song they made. It made no sense but was hysterical.
I'd never even heard of Germantown, a suburb of Memphis. I think something is in the Tennessee water, and it's something good!...
Along the way on our first trip to NYC in 2018, leaving Bridgestone Arena in Nashville after a Brad Paisley concert, we walked the crowded streets at midnight. It was surreal, passing so many bars with live bands playing 70's and 80's Rock, like a really good Twilight Zone. Now I'm wondering if Memphis (which we drove through but didn't stop) has a similar nightlife? Maybe on a future road trip we'll check out the famous Beale Street on the way to Nashville.
What does it take to be a man? What does it take to see It's all heart and soul A gentle hand? So easy to want and so hard to give How can you be a man 'Till you see beyond the life you live? Oh, what does it take to be a man?
We can be blind, but a man tries to see It takes tenderness For a man to be what he can be And what does it mean If you're weak or strong? A gentle feelin' Can make it right or make it wrong What does it take to be a man?
The will to give and not receive The strength to say what you believe The heart to feel what others feel inside To see what they can see
A man is somethin' that's real It's not what you are It's what you can feel It can't be too late To look through the hate and see I know that's what a man can be

Rock could not only inspire young people to be musicians, but could also encourage them to be better people. Well, not always...lol.

I also have Boston's Greatest Hits CD and my biggest disappointment was not including "The Launch" before "Cool the Engines" as you see in the Atlantis video I posted above.
But it gets even better with the short "Amanda"-like reprise immediately following "Cool the Engines"...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/06/2108:24 PM
And that's going to do it for me for at least 2 weeks...
Exactly a month ago, on Labor Day, after a series of strokes, we had to take our dog Ralphie (our first pet) to an emergency vet and put him to sleep. He lived 14 years with a bad liver (we got him as a 1 year-old abused rescue) which was several years longer than his expected lifespan. Dam...changing thoughts...

Still listening to Boston, a non-hit favorite from each of their first 3 albums (don't have any songs after that except a couple on the Greatest Hits CD...meh)...
I believe Third Stage (Sep. 1986) was released only days prior to this recycled pic (older brother purchased CD, I copied to cassette)...
My car was an '87 purchased in '86 (we were reminiscing last night with my parents, mom was co-signer, remembers it being Octoberish '86) and pic was taken when car was brand new (no pinstripes yet). The weather was obviously still warm...wife looks dressed for work (evening grocery store job), probably visiting me first, after college classes.
I remember later wearing out Third Stage as a softer alternative to Appetite for Destruction and Master of Puppets (Rush had gone *too* soft for me at the time). What I would give to see my cassette briefcase in that car and also to have that system again (although cassette [Clarion head unit, IIRC], it was pretty good, with decent amp and speakers). I'm sure that whatever I was listening to then is 95% of what I listen to today.
Anyway, the final song on Third Stage I could relate to, except for the girl's name (much like "Amanda" on same album)...

I remember Salsbury Dodge running a newspaper ad for this absolute base-model car for either $5k or $6k (don't remember). I traded up my POS 1978 Mustang II (4-banger Pinto with horse badges). Salesman's name was Rick Arnett (couldn't tell you this for any other car I've purchased...but I sure remember my first one).
Just couldn't do a base Chevette/J1000, Shadow/Sundance or Escort. The Colt sold me mostly on the super-smooth clutch and shifter (still carbureted though...maybe 80hp? lol.).
The plan was to add A/C (future-wife insisted) while she sells her early-80's Dodge Omni for $2k to pay for wedding/reception. We live a while with one car (new and dependable) then when we get really good jobs in Atlanta (place was booming), we save for a new Fiero GT 5-speed with dealer-installed T-tops. But Pontiac killed my dream! By the time we were ready in '89, we settled for a new CRX Si (240SX and Eclipse were options, MR2 a bit pricey). The Corolla SR-5 was pretty darn sharp as well, IMO.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/15/2102:09 AM
My sister had a 1981 or 82 Chevette (can't remember). My Dad tried telling her not to buy it, but she wouldn't listen. It ended up being a piece of garbage. The Colt was a cool little car. I remember most affordable smaller American made cars in the 80's didn't have very smooth clutches. The Japanese were way ahead on that one.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/15/2104:18 AM
Yeah, the Japanese had mastered slick shifting and road feel. My brother-in-law's '81 Celica GT fastback was a great example, helped sell me on imports. IIRC, you had an earlier Celica (w/classic Mustang styling?) so you know what I mean.
Oops...J1000 should have been T1000, the Pontiac sister car to the Chevette.
I remember driving a Ford Tempo rental in Atlanta and the steering felt so rubbery and disconnected, and with so much play (you had to turn the wheel a certain amount before the steering responded), that I had difficulty staying in my lane on the tight downtown interstate. It was scary.
My wife's Dodge Omni was fine until you reached ~60+ mph and then the steering wheel would start shaking (her local mechanic could never solve it)...

If you ask a hundred people to list the world’s greatest guitar players, chances are very few will include Glen Campbell. And it’a a crying shame! Just listen to this, possibly the greatest acoustic guitar solo of all time!
Although I have "Rhinestone Cowboy" (along with "Southern Nights") on my Country playlist. The music video is goofy as hell, but if I judged all of my tunes by their official videos, I'd have a lot less music (shudders at the non-US FGTH "Relax" video...and this from a RHPS fan...nostalgia runs deep).

Early 1984... seemed like overnight I lost all interest in sci-fi as 100% of my interest went elsewhere. Unfortunately my fascination with sci-fi never returned.
But the sci-fi I had enjoyed up to that point still entertains me today, and there's so many good classics. Been geeking to old musical scores all day...

Out of curiosity I looked up the discography for "Alabama" and judging by their album sales it seems the peak of their popularity was from 1980 to 1985.

Sounds about right to me.
October(?) 1984...first concert, first real date (with anyone), sitting on a bench holding hands by the fountains outside of the Centroplex arena waiting for my mom to pick us up after the concert. Can't remember the setlist other than a few songs, but IMO Alabama was at their peak then.
My top 20 Alabama tunes (in close to chronological order, #2 and #3 should move down a few spaces)...
Songs #1 - #14 could have been played at our concert (1980 - 1984)...
#15. "Forty Hour Week (For A Livin')" was 1985, up to #19. "Southern Star" (1988). #20. "Once Upon A Lifetime" (1992) is the only song on my favorites list from the 90's.
We still have our '84 Roll On concert-T's (below is my 80's Coca-Cola shirt she bought me for my 17th BD, IIRC)...

EDIT: Oh yeah. Dart casually met these guys once while fishing or something (don't remember).
EDIT: Song #2 reminds me that I have 80 lbs. (36 kg) of sweet potatoes coming from the LSU AgCenter! Clean'um, bake'um, freeze'um...then microwave for healthy snack or dinner, along with some sweet potato pie!
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 11/01/2103:02 AM
What I find interesting is that officially "Alabama" is labeled as a country music group but several of their hit songs really bordered on Southern Rock.

Just about Christmas here, so it is time for the annual glass of whisky and the greatest rendition of O Holy Night of all time. It is in Swedish, by arguably one of the greatest tenors of all time; Jussi Björling. The recording is from 1959, and even if you don’t understand the lyrics, I don’t think you can fail to appreciate how great a performance this is!

Sometimes I check out some cover versions of well-known songs, preferably not copy'n paste covers but making their own thing out of it. Currently this version of Eye of the tiger is used in some comercials over here: Jenn Grant
Looking for that one led me to this band: Walk off the Earth This is their version:
Further checking some more of their videos, that was one of their more conventional videos, they can get fairly creative in their choice of instruments or how they play them... NFL playoffs halftime show - probably not a totally unknown band.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 01/13/2211:34 AM
That's a pretty talented group.
What really gets me are the songs that you thought were original from a particular artist but then it turns out it was a cover.
The most recent one to shock me was "House of the Rising Sun". Everyone knows the famous song by The Animals but they didn't write it! It was a cover of a 1930's Blues song.

My father sits at night with no lights on His cigarette glows in the dark The living room is still I walk by, no remark I tiptoe past the master bedroom where My mother reads her magazines I hear her call sweet dreams But I forgot how to dream
But you say it's time we moved in together And raised a family of our own, you and me Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be You want to marry me, we'll marry
My friends from college they're all married now They have their houses and their lawns They have their silent noons Tearful nights, angry dawns Their children hate them for the things they're not They hate themselves for what they are And yet they drink, they laugh Close the wound, hide the scar
But you say it's time we moved in together And raised a family of our own, you and me Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be You want to marry me, we'll marry
You say we can keep our love alive Babe all I know is what I see The couples cling and claw And drown in love's debris You say we'll soar like two birds through the clouds But soon you'll cage me on your shelf I'll never learn to be just me first By myself

Stumbled over this when I was looking for the live bass player in some Phil Collins concert. As it happens, he's Leland Sklar one of the most recorded bass players ever. - live and studio musician, he's on >800 albums and ~3000 tracks..When the "Selected Albums" list is split by alphabet for the stars, then you know he has done some serious work... In the pandemic he posted almost daily a video telling some stories and playing along a track.

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 07/07/2210:36 PM
I recall purchasing only 2 45's in my life, both in a music store at a mall. The first was Styx's "Why Me" opposite "Lights" ("Cornerstone" 1979). The second was Van Halen's "Jump" opposite "House of Pain" ("1984" 1984), which I'd never heard before.
Van Halen's 1984 ============
Side A ---------- 1984 (instrumental) Jump Panama Top Jimmy Drop Dead Legs
Side B ---------- Hot for Teacher I'll Wait Girl Gone Bad House of Pain
What a freaking monster album! Last two songs are my least favorite on the album, with "House of Pain" at the bottom.
When you feel that this is the worst song on an album, it's probably a pretty darn good album.

There was a guy in another thread dissing Jeff Lynne because of the cellos, which as far as I know he stopped using in about 1978 after 'Out of the Blue'...and that his singing is rubbish, which I would tend to agree with in that era. But to me, that early ELO stuff is just feels so alive and joyous despite its musical shortcomings.
If you listen to to any >2010 'Jeff Lynne's ELO' output, you'll just hear sanitized autotuned mediocrity.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/10/2206:35 PM
^ Lol.
I know I'm missing some good ELO because there were a couple of songs in my 8-track collection that I don't currently have (don't remember the names, songs or albums). I'm not sure how to correct this since Amazon stopped selling MP3s, and I'll never stream anything (nor am I interested in a "Napster" repository).

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/10/2207:33 PM
mikew, I always had a feeling, as with old Queen, that you're more into ELO deep cuts. "Kuiama" was a nice headphone listen.
As far as YT goes, I was always glad I could at least find and sample songs before purchasing them elsewhere. Amazon killed MP3 purchases in favor of their streaming-only service.
If I can't own something outright (to be technically correct, media that can't be taken away from me apart from physically entering my home and removing it), then I don't want it. *Especially* with my music which I consider timeless.
I'll definitely never *pay* for any streaming music/movie service, which is what I should have said.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/10/2207:49 PM
Yep, that's roughly the same for me. I use YT while I'm sitting at the PC, and it builds up a scaringly accurate playlist of what I like and it thinks it's 1974 +/- 5 years. These days, YT is the only way I get to hear about 'new' music and if I hear something I really like, I'll order the CD for the post-YT world. That applied for 'Muse' and 'Dream Theater', where I bought most of their albums on CD based on what I heard on YT.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/12/2211:35 PM
Showtime in 1 hour, about to hit the bar (moderate 2 drink evening [but doubles]). I've been waiting all week for this concert (and first one on new 55" UHD 4K TV + Onkyo/Bose sound).
EDIT: And DVD (which I didn't know we owned until this week) sounds better than YT (which is usually the case).

Tonight we're going to relive, to the best of our ability, a very special cooler misty Wednesday evening: Atlanta, May 4, 1994, Bobby Dodd stadium (GA Tech)...
Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pulse HD
FYI: Guy Pratt was PF's tour bassist since "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" (1987), also once Richard Wright's son-in-law, and now plays with Nick Mason's "Saucerful of Secrets". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Pratt
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/19/2202:00 PM
Not seeing Pink Floyd when they came to Miami for the Division Bell tour is one of my greatest regrets but hindsight is always 20/20. I was a starving college student at the time with no car.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/20/2202:17 PM
Concert was fantastic, other than the Floyd getting a late start (~30 min.) and their light show being kind of flat (no lasers overhead that I could tell). I was hoping for a surprise visit from Roger if just for a song or two, but it didn't happen. Drinks were great as always, if limited in selection (we get a package deal which includes free parking and a couple of drinks each). Also, we didn’t catch even a whiff of pot the entire evening.
Our room for the night was connected to the venue so I didn't have to drive which was *really* nice, and with good eats and excellent coffee at the breakfast bar. Overall I'll give this place 4 out of 5 stars. Cozy but needs some updating, especially lighting effects. Also thought the sound, although clear with decent volume, could be just a little louder for a Rock concert (some ordinance or something limiting decibels as to not disturb nearby senior residents).

Nah, just stayed in our seats talking and nursing our drinks until everyone had cleared out.
EDIT: We completely overhauled our wardrobes just prior to Covid (bad timing) and now we dress sharper for stay-at-home concerts than when we used to go out.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/21/2202:39 AM
Talked it over with Mrs. and she agrees that our stay-at-home concert dates have been so much fun that we're going to spend some $ acquiring a more serious collection of DVD/Blu-rays.
Already have all things Rush, a Journey and ZZ Top concert and a few others. Would like to expand with artists like SRV and more MTV Unplugged.
++++++++++
Meanwhile, I'm unboxing and dusting off tapes I haven't watched in decades while hooking up a VHS player in the living room until I replace those with DVDs (at the best price I can find)...
Van Halen (1986 Live Without a Net ) - There's Only One Way to Rock
On the one hand I'm sad that we're all but retiring from the live music scene (Molly Ringwalds have so few dates these days and not much else in town anymore) but aging happens (to the listeners and performers). But man it was fun while it lasted, as posted in many threads on this board. Glad we did it.

I wore out my VHS copy of Live Without A Net. I saw the 5150 tour. There's Only One way To Rock was a great opening song. That was a great band, having a good time, and it showed.

Oh man, lucky you! I saw only the Balance tour, but glad I got to see them at least once. I wish there was a DLR VH full concert DVD but I'm still looking (1984 would be great, album released right before wife and I started dating so it was THE new album to listen to, followed by Purple Rain a few months later).
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/22/2210:35 PM
Saw them 4 times, all with Sammy. 5150, f.u.c.k. twice and Balance. The 2007 reunion with DLR just made me sad. Dave was a shadow of his former glory. I watched YouTube videos and decided not to go.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/23/2212:21 AM
LB4LB, from reading the YT comments, I think the guy I posted above gets kudos for playing 80 intros in one take. I do like how it chronologically shows the evolution of Rock.
Which had me thinking, I am at the perfect musical age. I'm young enough to have enjoyed and appreciated early-mid-90's Grunge/Alternative, but old enough to recognize just how beyond awesome 70's music was (Rock and R&B)!
And right in the middle is the partying 80's with a fun factor right off the freaking scale!
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/23/2212:55 AM
No doubt, the dude can play. I especially like that he is a Fender Strat and Tele guy. Those were my choices back when I was a hack guitar player in a band that played the occasional party. Besides, he played the intro to Hendrix's Little Wing. I have always loved that song. It always makes me think of my wife. He played the intro to Oasis's Wonderwall. That is now right up there with songs like Smoke on the Water and Stairway to Heaven, which are forbidden to play at guitar store.
And yes, I do think guys are age, I'm 57, grew up during the best time for music in America. We had the classics from the 60's and 70's all the while great stuff in the 80's and early 90's was coming out. I can't tell you happy it makes me when I see younger people discover this music and fall in love with it too.

Also "Dust in the Wind"? Gotta put Wayne's World in the movie queue.

I hope one day to find a small outdoor venue similar to your cousin's gigs that you've posted here. That would be perfect!
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/28/2204:13 PM
Friday evening I was racking my brains trying to come up with an original date night idea, and was about to give up and just go with the regular concert or movie. Women love it when you use some imagination and get creative, even if you both know that all you really want to do is poke her. Wait an minute, THAT'S IT!...
Frantic pace to set things up (mainly finding my poker box in the attic and creating a mostly Country-based playlist...kitchen already in a country style). No time to run out for Jack and Coke, but after a couple of wet weekends in a row (although very moderate), it's time for some dry ones. It was fun teaching her how to play (and a good refresher for me).
Next up...board games? I found a like-new Risk + Castle Risk at my local Goodwill. Classical playlist for this one, I think. What would Napoleon listen to?

A friend of mine and his wife have seen them live several times over the last few years. They love to gamble, so whenever Priest plays at a casino venue, they go see them. They say they are still great live.
Lot of School of Rock videos on You tube showing young kids jamming. It gives me back some faith in young people. lol.

No KK or Glenn Tipton now unfortunately. They are the one band I regret not seeing.

I was at this concert, just a young lad of 17. Deep Purple reunion tour. I remember it being surreal looking at Ritchie Blackmore in person. Also the first time I ever saw a laser. Saw Rush later that year. Lots of lasers. This is why I love YouTube.

Faith No More BBC sessions. I know RossUK will appreciate this. These guys are amazing, definitely in my top 5 bands of all time. Still sounding amazing. This live in studio sessions proves that. Yeah..... you get it or you don't. I get it, big time.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 09/23/2208:01 PM
That would have been ‘British Steel’.
Things were a bit smaller scale in those days. There couldn’t have been more than a thousand there, maybe less. Seem to remember us agreeing that Maiden were better than Priest. Saw Black Sabbath (with Dio) at the same venue around the same time.

British Steel is my favorite Priest album. I'm very envious of you.

It's still quite amazing to me just how much Foreigner's style changed from the late 70's to the mid 80's. They changed about as radically as Chicago did.

Yeah, lots of 70's Rock (and R&B) bands didn't transition well into the 80's, whereas some original 80's artists were great.
I still have my wife's cassette of Chicago's famed original Greatest Hits (was in her car when we first met) which reminds of the Pensacola surf (or was it Gulf Shores?...old man memory fading somewhat), some moderate drinking on a sandy summer sunset, and wondering how lucky I was going to get that evening (not lucky enough).
Due to our meager upbringing, we were never into exchanging expensive gifts, but always a small thing here and there. Which is why I'm hanging out in the late-70's after a little gift she brought home from the grocery store that she thought I'd like (and she was right)...
And I plan to show my appreciation this evening...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/07/2206:18 PM
Great post Mark and that model Smokey and the Bandit Firebird looks great!
I also have that volume I greatest hits of Chicago but on CD, not tape. That's the one with the distinctive cover of the band members on the scaffold trying to paint the side of a building but instead are just freaking out.
Sunrise, creepin' in your eyes Cold empty side walks Miles away from trustin' someone Far from giving up
Young blood, cry tough Mean street run There's a hunger inside you Desperate rebel runaway Far from giving up
Someday, someway All very soon You'll end, long nights Chasin' the moon
War with yourself Makes you feel better Caught behind the lines Troubles child Faith finds a cure It makes you feel better You know you can shine Troubled child
Voices echo, from the past Decisions made for you Trials they made to touch Your heart, never found their way
War with yourself Makes you feel better Caught behind the lines Troubles child Faith finds a cure It makes you feel better You know you can shine Troubled child
Journey - Mother, Father (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster)
She sits alone, an empty stare A mother's face she wears Where did she go wrong? The fight is gone Lord, help this broken home
Hey, mother, father, sister Hey, come back, trying, believing Hey, mother, father, dreamer Don't you know that I'm alive for you? I'm your seventh son And when lightning strikes the family Have faith, believe
With dreams he tried, oh, lost his pride He drinks his life away One photograph, oh, in broken glass It should not end this way
[Instrumental interlude]
Through bitter tears And wounded years, those ties Of blood were strong So much to say, those yesterdays So now don't you turn away
Hey, mother, father, sister Hey, yeah, come back, trying, believing Oh, hey, mother, father, dreamer Don't you know that I'm alive for you? I'm your seventh son And when lightning strikes the family Have faith, believe
Don't you know that I'm alive for you? I'm your seventh son And when lightning strikes the family Have faith, believe Have faith, believe Believe
Some of these songs have the same emotional impact for me at 55 as they did at 13, and probably always will.
Journey's non-hits are at least as good as their hits, IMO...
Journey - Escape (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster)
He's just a young boy out of school Livin' his world like he wants to They're makin' laws, but they don't understand Turns a boy in to a fightin' man They won't take me They won't break me No one could tell him what to do Had to learn everything the hard way He's on the street, breakin' all the rules I'm tellin' you that he's nobody's fool They won't take me They won't break me Now he's leavin', gettin' out from this masquerade Oh gotta go
I'm finally out in the clear and I'm free I've got dreams I'm livin' for I'm movin' on where they'll never find me Rollin' on to anywhere I'll break away, yes I'm on my way Leavin' today, yes I'm on my way Just when you think you had it all figured out Runnin' scared can change your mind I never knew I had so much to give How hard times can fool ya Oh I'm okay, I'm alright Feelin' good out on your own I'll break away, I'll break away tonight I've got dreams I'm livin' for I'll break away Yes, I'm on my way I'm leaving', leavin' today Yes, I'm on my way This is my escape Yes, I'm on my way I'll break away Yes, I'm on my way

Two more thoughts...
1. Watching some old Journey videos on YT, 70's/80's chicks were so freaking gorgeous!
2. Oh man...I believe Journey will be performing this Friday evening at our favorite venue (concert was in Houston...so margaritas and homemade Tex-Mex): ... Journey: Live in Houston - The Escape Tour (1981)
+ supplemental DVD videos like "Faithfully" (1983) and "When You Love a Woman" (1988) as a warm-up: Journey: Greatest Hits 1978-1997
Journey - Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster)
Top YT comment for above video: "Being a teenager, hanging out at the mall, Journey blasting from everyone's cars, the whole future in front of us. Did we know how good we had it? It's mind-blowing how time flies and mysterious life is."

Which were the two 10cc songs that made it in the USA? I would have thought there's quite a few to choose from...
Yep, Badfinger didn't exactly benefit from their music.
I'm sure TV studio audiences are told told not to move around when filming, but the result looks like they are bored. This is a good example, the audience here is awesomely disinterested.

These are the only two 10cc songs I know, and I remember as a kid hearing them on the radio all the time (in fact I have vivid memories of hearing the later song on two occasions)...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/14/2206:56 PM
I'm guessing that 10cc has a more progressive sound but mostly known for, at least in the US, a couple of their softer/happier tunes.
Kind of like Ambrosia. Most people know: "Biggest Part of Me", "You're the Only Woman" and "How Much I Feel" (which very much I like, BTW), but don't know of their progressive side (except maybe the last one)...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/14/2208:13 PM
What an interesting coincidence; someone in the comments to the following video mentions Dancing with George by Ambrosia as a prelude to this 10cc epic. One Night in Paris by has also been mentioned as the inspiration for Bohemian Rhapsody.
It's well known that DLR liked Disco (Eddie said in an interview that they were all into something different and that's what Dave brought to the group...and it worked) so I hope he's aware of this interesting mix of Rock and Dance.

Great stuff. The other main protagonist in the horrific Britpop war of the mid 1990s was Blur. I didn't have a particular dog in that fight, and this is to provide a bit of balance.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 10/29/2211:43 PM
I also saw them in 1996, although they were absolutely the headline act here. The performance was OK, but I might as well have stayed at home and listened to their records.
That was the impression I got from The Eagles a couple of weeks earlier at the same venue. They just competently played their songs.
A big contrast to say Bruce Springsteen or The Rolling Stones who have a pretty mediocre (IMHO) collection of studio songs, but they really jazz them up for their concerts.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 11/08/2201:40 AM
Anyone know who the guy playing the gold Les Paul is ? Toured with as backing guitar for a pretty big band in 1977 and 1980/81. BTW, Brian Downey was pretty good at the drums.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 11/14/2204:29 AM
Ann Wilson kicked ass in the 70's. Barracuda is one of the best vocal performances by a man or woman. But my heart belonged to Nancy. They were from Seattle, but did not break out until after their move to Vancouver, Canada.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 11/14/2207:11 PM
Many years ago I was gifted as a freebee, by a business partner, one of these new CD’s. I didn’t even own a CD player at the time. Not long after that, I did purchase my first CD player.
That was how I got introduced to Software and their album Syn-Code.
Well, I know it is anti Canadian of me, but I'm not a Rush fan. I did see them at Maple Leafs Gardens in 1984. (they sold out 3 nights, their home town of Toronto). My friend took me. Maybe it was the forced Canadian content on FM radio growing up. Fantastic musicians, no question. I can listen to YYZ. But when Geddy starts to sing ? I punch out.
I though it was going to be Led Zeppelin when you mentioned the best drummer who ever lived.

Not under-rated by me at least. I only ever have one tape (CD now) in the car, which I swap out every few years. Between about 1984 and 1988 it was 'Strangers in the Night, so I know just about every note of that album.

I use to blast that from my ghetto blaster in the early 80's . (sometimes I wonder how I afforded all those D batteries) Amazing album. Now you can listen to different versions. I still prefer the original, Natural Thing kicking things off. Hot n Ready is the alternate first song.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 12/02/2206:33 PM
Aerosmith got plenty of criticism for the softer path they took in the 80's/90's, but when you want a certain mood and you don't want to spaz to 'Air Supply', they're hard to beat...

The Sgt. Pepper movie starring the Bee Gees was terrible but Aerosmith's cover of "Come Together" that was featured in that movie was a darn fine cover.

I watched Sgt. Pepper recently and really enjoyed it. The key, as with Xanadu, Flash Gordon, Labyrinth, Little Shop of Horrors, Maximum Overdrive, etc. (mostly goofy musicals or music-heavy movies) is to keep a slight buzz going. I once watched Rocky Horror totally sober and it wasn't nearly as good.

Ah yes, thanks for pointing that out. I do recall that Rush's first album was indeed very different from what their sound eventually became and of course there was no Neil Peart.

Just FYI, I believe we've cruised the same number of times we've seen Rush: 7. I don't miss taking cruises so much, but walking the 'Quarter with all the Rush (and other Rock) fans before their "Time Machine" concert (best setlist and performance, IMO) can never be matched. Miss you, Rush.

Read in Wikipedia that some German musician I never heard off died last week, so I looked him up, Manuel Göttsching. The band is called Ash Ra Tempel, the genre Krautrock, though if someone had asked me about that genre, I would have thought of some different kind of music ;), but it certainly fits in the 70ies....

Switching gears, and with a wonderful discovery! The original is back!
I really had to dig to find it, re-posted earlier this year, hidden away in a dark corner of YT, I suppose.
And I wasn't the only one unhappy that it was removed and replaced with "VAN HALEN - CABO WABO SOLERPLEXSTUDIOS INC"...
Angry YT comments:
========== "What the hell happened to this video? I used to get super inspired to work out watching this and now it's just way too PC for me! What happened to freedom of expression? I guess that's a bad thing these days! And yes I am a woman and not offended At All by the other video! Bring it back!!!"
"WHAT THE #%&*$# HAPPENED HERE..........????? HUH.........????"
"#%&*$# you tube. That video was the bomb!!! They killed it" ==========
One day I bet all of our favorite sexy videos will be removed including "Hot for Teacher" and "Girls, Girls, Girls", as this one fan video was for so long.

Ah, one two more, staying in 1988 (hard to believe this and Cabo Wabo is that old) with a Grunge-looking cutie well before the Grunge look was a thing...
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - What I Am (Official Music Video)
On a personal note, how many afternoons did I hear "Slip Slidin' Away", Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like An Eagle" and Earth Wind & Fire's "September" while coming home on the school bus from either elementary or middle school, along with those other Paul Simon hits!

As always, and second only to VH's "Ice Cream Man" to vividly send me back to a particular time and place.
Mopping a grocery store waiting for closing time and for my girlfriend (future wife) to come pick me up (before I had a license and a car). I sure could go for some Godfather's Pizza today.

The whole Beth - [Parson] Nathaniel exchange is one of my favorite parts of the album! Ah, it's all great.
And while I prefer the original classic era and location for WotW (as with Jeff Wayne's Musical Version), it was creepy seeing visuals in the Tom Cruise movie of the Martians extracting human blood.

“Which brings me to May 30th, 2020. Bob and Doug returned to the Kennedy Space Center. They suited up. They waved to their families, and they rode an elevator up nearly 20 stories. They strapped in to their seats and waited as the tanks beneath filled with tens of thousands of gallons of fuel. And then they launched. Yeah, they did." <cackles>

^ Bella Donna is a great album.
And I recognized the first few chords of Blackbird above, but then it lost me (I knew from the first chord/pause that it was Beatles' Blackbird). Nice job, but wish it would have stayed Beatles [EDIT: although their song is pretty good].
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 02/20/2305:31 AM
Glad you liked the Alter Bridge song, they are one of my favorite current bands.
As for the Fleetwood Mac, I saw a music reaction video and the guy was blown away to hear "the beginning of a Destiny's Child" song. It always blows me away when twenty somethings hear songs I grew up with that were huge hits, for the first time.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 04/15/2307:12 PM
I'm listening to Canada's greatest song writer.
Well, the cop made the showdown He was sure he was right He had all of the lowdown From the bank heist last night His best friend was the robber And his wife was a thief All the children were killers They couldn't get no relief The bungalow was surrounded When a voice loud and clear Said, come on out with your hands up Or we'll blow you out of here. There was a face in the window The tv cameras rolled Then they cut to the announcer And the story was told. The artist looked at the producer The producer sat back He said, what we have got here Is a perfect track But we don't have a vocal And we don't have a song If we could get these things accomplished Nothin' else could go wrong. So he balanced the ashtray As he picked up the phone And said, send me a songwriter Who's drifted far from home And make sure that he's hungry Make sure he's alone Send me a cheeseburger And a new rolling stone. Yeah. There's still crime in the city, Said the cop on the beat, I don't know if i can stop it I feel like meat on the street They paint my car like a target I take my orders from fools Meanwhile some kid blows my head off Well, i play by their rules That's why i'm doin' it my way I took the law in my hands So here i am in the alleyway A wad of cash in my pants I get paid by a ten year old He says he looks up to me There's still crime in the city But it's good to be free. Yeah. Now i come from a family That has a broken home Sometimes i talk to daddy On the telephone When he says that he loves me I know that he does But i wish i could see him I wish i knew where he was But that's the way all my friends are Except maybe one or two Wish i could see him this weekend Wish i could walk in his shoes But now i'm doin' my own thing Sometimes i'm good, then i'm bad Although my home has been broken It's the best home i ever had Yeah. Well, i keep gettin' younger My life's been funny that way Before i ever learned to talk I forgot what to say I sassed back to my mom I sassed back to my teacher I got thrown out of bible school For sassin' back at the preacher Then i grew up to be a fireman Put out every fire in town Put out anything smokin' But when i put the hose down The judge sent me to prison He gave me life without parole Wish i never put the hose down Wish i never got old.
Against The Wind, is much too cool of a song to sync with Forest Gump.
Love White Rabbit. I always thought it was too short of a song. Grace Slick was pretty sexy, back in the day. Reminds me of one of my ex's in that video. I would have done shrooms with her. Feed your head.
How cool would it be to see Robert Plant do The Battle Of Evermore ? Robert is a wise man imo. Leaving the Led Zeppelin mystic in the past. He has had a decent solo career. He knows his limitations, and surrounds himself with good musicians. Much like Roger Waters does.

Yeh i was 20 back in 85 and i now remember hearing some their stuff.
The drums alone sound great but all round its pretty good.
I was 17 in 85. I remember the first time I heard She Sells Sanctuary. My friend worked at the base weight club, he had a key. We use to skip classes in the afternoon ang go workout, blasting the stereo system. Care free days.

In the end, it comes down to his art to me. He is a musical genius. I miss the days where he could still do the inhale scream. (1:00 mark) https://youtu.be/lKgOe1Rl8YY
When are they going to remaster video of the Wall tour ?
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 06/08/2310:44 PM
Very hard to know whats going on in another mans head,
The dude is certainly upset with something.
But just as long as he can handle his temper then he will be ok,
The dude is an icon to millions of young men and that means he has to be responsible for what he shows them.
Shooting the german issue wermacht machine gun into the crowd in the middle of germany was not a good idea when we at war in europe right now against uncle vladimir.
Great choices. Thin Lizzy is definitely in my top ten bands. Nice to see you didn't post The Boys Are Back In Town or Jailbreak. To many people only know those 2 Thin Lizzy songs.

Yeah, I remember hearing it on the radio, right before my friends stopped to pick me up for school. Grade 12. We were bummed, we were all fans. This Documentary looks really good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej5LJ6W339k
I've never been a big Rush fan. Maybe it was all that forced Canadian content on Toronto FM radio. Maybe it's Geddy's vocals .... yeah that's mostly it. Extremely talented musicians no doubt. I even saw them in 1984, my friend took me. They sold out Maple Leaf Gardens 3 nights in a row. Grace Under Pressure tour. They were almost too perfect. I like to see live bands jam and go off on tangents a bit.

RIP Sinead O'Connor - would have thought she was older than 56, as I consider that a song of my youth (I guess I am getting old...) Nothing Compares 2 U (live)

I`ve been a subscriber for a pretty long time and just used it occationally. I bought me a new car some weeks ago that has the android auto option. After that I have used Tidal almost every day and have no complaints. I find the music I look for and the sound is good. Heh, I didn`t know when I bought it, but the car has a 825W 20 loudspeaker system and Tidal sounds great on it. I find myself sitting in the car listening to music after I have parked in the garage. I`ve just got the hang on making playlist and it works fine.
I`m not sure, but it seems that Tidal makes playlists that suits my searches. Probably that algorithm thingy.
For now I have no reason to switch to Spotify. What the future brings, I don`t know.
If you have some tips or tricks I will gladly listen.

I have been bouncing between Tidal Plus and Qobuz. Trying to decided between the 2. Your car sound system sounds awesome. You truly only need a Hi Res audio stream on good equipment. Bluetooth cannot handle the data stream needed to produce Hi Res. You need downloaded Hi Res files (using your phones USB for Android Auto) or a strong Wi Fi/ Network connection. Hi Res will suck up your phones data very quickly as the files are large compared to mp3 quality. I stream directly to my Denon receiver. I can get 192/24 this way. Tidal is sort of in transition, from MQA to Flac (above 44.1Hz). Right now I am preferring Qobuz, as it shows the frequency. 44.1/96/192Hz. Tidal shows Low/High/Max. I may go back it they show the frequency. Qobuz works with Android Auto as well. Neil Young's Live at Carnagie Hall 1970, in 192/24 bit sounds incredible on my home system.
One thing for sure, both services are better than YouTube Music and Spotify. YT Music is mp3 quality 320 kHz. There is a drastic difference when listening on a good system. Over bluetooth earbuds, it's fine, as it is a limited to the equipment. And it is good for lower data rates.
Qobuz allows you to download file to your PC, Tidal does not. Both allow downloading to mobile devices. I have 140 GB of music on both my PC and phone.
BTW, I am pretty sure Spotify is only going to offer 44.1/16 bit quality, which is equivalent to a CD. But it is much better than what they offer now.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 08/12/2312:50 AM
Thanks for the info WT. Never heard about Qobuz. I will look into that.
I don`t use Bluetooth in the car. I use USB cable. When it comes to sound quality I am not sure if I would notice the difference as my hearing has been better. Props and jets have made some dips I`m afraid.
I will study your post more carefully tomorrow as it`s soon morning here.

Thank you for the answer.
No problem. I've taken a deep dive into the Hi Res audio thing, just the last couple months. If your hearing is not top notch, you will be more than happy with CD quality 44.1Hz/16bit. (Tidal's lower level) It is still a giant leap from 320kHz that Spotify and YouTube Music stream.
To be honest, I can only tell the difference of 192Hz/24 bit on my home system. There is a more dynamic range.

I listen to this song at least once a day, and almost every night when I go to bed. With my mind relaxing and in a more receptive state the lyrics offer insights that my wholly-conscious mind misses. Plus the visuals are stunning.

I’ve been having a McCartney weekend: Flaming Pie, Driving Rain, Chaos and Creation, New, III.
He used to be in a small band from Liverpool and I think he taps into that heritage very well while also staying modern and relevant. I haven’t listened to these albums as much as I should’ve. I’m impressed by how good they are.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 12/28/2301:02 AM
One more mention of Tom MacDonald (also Adam Calhoun, Tom's girl Nova [vocals/videos], and Dax in a funny video)...
If someone would have told me less than a week ago that I would be purchasing new music (~1995+), and that it would be Rap, and that the artist looked to be right out of a horror flick, I would have laughed. Freaking Rap?! Lol!
Yet here we are. There's something to this that has me hooked (too PWEC to comment further).
My favorites so far (album then singles):
American Flags (<- see video) Your America (<- see video) Freedom of Speech Black & White (<- see video :D) My Way Race War (<- start here...also see video & many reaction videos)
---------- (see videos for all songs below)
Brainwashed Clown World Fake Woke People So Stupid Snowflakes Superman The System
++++++++++
First band I ever saw live, summer of 1983 at the State Fair (and I remember all 3 songs)...
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? - 12/30/2304:55 AM
That was moving F4UDash4, and similar to what I was looking for (but couldn't find) with Randy Rhodes playing "Goodbye to Romance" live.
When I post songs of what I'm listening to, or about to listen to, I'm actually listening to the studio version (CD quality) on my stereo. And man, the way Randy plays that song is phenomenal.
Also, Gary Rossington in the above video with that high-quality recording. Thanks.
EDIT: Especially when wearing decent sounding headphones.

I look forward to seeing Neil Young and Crazy Horse, May 20th. Toronto is his only Canadian stop. The show sold out in 7 minutes. I bought tickets through his fansite (Neil Young Archives) 3 days prior, thankfully. This will be my 3rd time seeing Neil with the Horse. Quite possibly the last.
BTW, nobody has mastered the art of distortion like Neil.
