Community Warfare: Scout Mode

Community Warfare: Scout Mode - 09/15/16 12:27 AM

So...

There is a "new" game mode in MWO for those that haven't played it for a while. Scout mode is 4v4, usually IS vs Clan, with a 55 ton maximum per mech. The object is either to capture intel beacons and escape in the drop ship, or prevent the enemy team from doing so.

If you are collecting intel, once you get 10 beacons the dropship will come and you need to extract. If you get less than 10 for whatever reason, the dropship will still show up around the 3 minute mark. If you are collecting and you kill the defending 4 mechs, the dropship will arrive and you still need to extract to win.

If you are defending, you need to destroy the 4 enemy mechs. You do not need to extract.

I have found the best mechs for this mode to be 50 and 55 ton mechs with full armor and as large an alpha strike as you can muster. Energy weapons are generally too hot because the brawls will nearly always happen at very close range. SRM 4/6, Autocannon, and small energy weapons are usually the best. It is my experience that PPC and LRM are NOT useful at all in this game mode. Flamers actually come into use here as the clan mechs are generally running VERY hot multi SRM builds and the flamer will shut them down long enough to blast a leg off.

Shadowhawks, Hunchbacks ( especially 4SP ) , Griffins, Wolverines, Centurions, Enforcers generally rule the IS side

the clan team will almost always have at least one Stormcrow, with a smattering of Cheetahs, Novas, Hunchy IIC, or Shadowcats

The mechs I have had the best luck with are Shadowhawk with AC10 & 2 SRM 4 & 4 Small Pulse, Griffin with 4 SRM 6 and flamer & medium laser plus ECM, or Enforcer with LB10-X and a few medium lasers. Bring lots of ammo. It's a good idea to shoot for a speed in the high 70kph range or above. 80 to 90 is best.

The smaller mediums seem to have a rough time because their leg armor is not sufficient to survive a 6 SRM6 hit from a Stormcrow and they get legged in one alpha. Cicada, Blackjack, Vindicator, etc...

Some lights do ok - especially with ECM - but it seems that it is nearly always better to bring 50 or 55 tons instead. Remember that Stormcrows generally move out at around 100kph so your 120kph light isn't really getting away from that.

Games last 10 minutes max and are usually over in 5. It is a lot of fun and a fresh game mode for this game. Let me know if anyone wants to join in.

One other thing, the CW game modes allow you to set up 2 drop decks for each mode ( scouting and invasion ) so it is usually a good idea to set up a deck or two ahead of time. The invasion mode is the same as it has been - you need 4 mechs of any type as long as the total tonnage is 240 or less. The scout mode mechs must be 55 tons or less but no other limitations.

That kind of play could get me back into MWO! Sounds like fun, I should really put my hat in the ring of the Crimson Clan, where do I sign up for the SimHq clan?

Sounds fast paced and kind of fun.

It's a fun change of pace but the missions don't happen a lot and it's pretty easy to win if you're on the scouting team. All you need to do is grab a speedy light, grab the intel you need, and shut down until the near-invincible dropship arrives to instantly whisk you away.

I do enjoy the fact that it doesn't play out like a big derpy pointless deathmatch like 99.9998% of MWO. Last mission actually had our lance slowly combing and patrolling the streets for infiltrators.

Sounds good, thanks Clyde. Black Death Marik is my game name, we are friends on MWO though, I believe. Looking forward to squeaking in a game or two. I have a 3yo and a 1yo so I can't promise to be super active but I'll do my best to carry my weight.

OK yes I do have you on my friend list. There should be enough c-bills in the unit coffers to get you in, i will check tonight or tomorrow afternoon. You should see some kind of invite message ( i don't remember what form it will take, though... )
