Ta for the tip about Barker's biography.

Wilco - I already have Collishaw's book on the Kindle, which I'll read after I've finished Jem Shaw's "The Larks", which is a good read and clearly uses Arthur Gould Lee's books as references (in fact in one chapter the protagonist even ends up at 46 Sqn, where he talks to Lee).

Sorry for OT. Should we start a bibliography thread?

I'd say yes, good idea. Posting book sugestions here just clogs the wish-list thread with off-topic posts, and not having these excellent book ideas in a dedicated thread means the whole book discussion is pretty much lost in the clutter.

Just decided to start a bibliography thread hear where you can post your suggested readings on WWI air war subject.
Hopefully the admin can move those bibliography related threads from the "Wish List" thread to here.

A wonderful cover art for the book, but actually is a colorized version of the actual pic, where both the pilot and the gunner where just simply ready to take off. Anyway, I think Fe2 B gunners did not know the term "vertigo".

Hi Akula,

Are these titles all in German?

If so, problematic, but not impossible.

Brief History of the Royal Flying Corps by Ralph Barker, This is probably one of the best all rounders that covers the RFC throughout the War.

.

I must have been on sabbatical when this thread was started, I only just found it now because of a link to it in a current thread on the main forum. But better late to the party than not arriving at all, eh? Here are some more titles for the ongoing list, (just a few of my personal favorites really), which I recommend seeking out and reading when time, and money, allow. Most of these are long, long out of print so you will need to hit eBay and AbeBooks and other such sources.

In personal narratives and biographies:

"Five Years in the Royal Flying Corps", James McCudden
"Wind in the Wires", Duncan Grinnell-Milne
"The Way of the Eagle", Charles Biddle
"Horses Don’t Fly: A Memoir of World War I", Frederick Libby
"With the Earth Beneath", A.R. Kingsford
"Double-Decker C.666", Haupt Heydemarck
"Fighting the Flying Circus", Edward Rickenbacker
"Heaven High, Hell Deep", Norman Archibald
"High Adventure", James Norman Hall
"The Spider Web", T.D. Hallam (P.I.X.)

In history and reference:

"High in the Empty Blue", Alex Revell
"German Air Power in World War 1", John H. Morrow, Jr.
"The Air Defence of Britain 1914-1918", Christopher Cole and E.F. Cheeseman
"Flying The Old Planes", Frank Tallman
"The Story of a North Sea Air Station", C.F. Snowden Gamble

In instructional sources:

"Practical Flying", W.G. McMinnies
"Learning to Fly in the U.S. Army", E.N. Fales
"The A-B-C of Aviation", Victor W. Pagé

So many books, so little time.

Lou

Just to be clear, that fixed forward-firing Lewis on the FEE posted above cannot shoot the obs' jewels. That's just forced perspective in that photo. Although grainy, here's the same airplane:

BTW, I know, ah, somebody who has colorized that previously posted photo up there for inclusion in a pending book.

Back to the intent of this thread, a great read is Bloody April, Slaughter in the Skies over Arras, 1917, by Peter Hart.

Re: Bibliography Thread - 02/20/16 11:42 AM

Lots of discussions about books here, lately, and it will sure doesn't help my "to read" pile of books to decrease wink Among them I have:
-KEKs and Fokkerstaffels by Johan Ryheul
Only had a quick look, but it seems great, with pictures and locations of early german fighter units along the front.
-Somme Sucess by Peter Hart
-Red Baron, The Life and Death of an Ace, by Peter Kilduff
I liked his book about Carl Degelow (Black Fokker Leader), and if it is the same quality I won't be disapointed (plus it was selled at a very cheap price)
-Mémoires by Roland Garros
A recently published book, there only a few pages at the end about the war-his war diary until his capture, but he had a quite hectic life before that.

Now, some books(in french) about french pilots that I have read and that I liked:

Charles de Rose, le pionner de l'aviation by Jean-Noël Grandhomme & Thérèse Kremp
Le Corsaire de l'Air, Maurice Happe et la naissance du bombardement stratégique by Gilles Krugler

The two were pionneers in their kind. Charles created the first fighter squadron, Maruice tried to set up a strategic bombing force. These two books are universitarian works, and they don't only focus on the war. The one on Happe tells more about tactics, formations used etc...that the one about de Rose but both are interesting.

The last one is also in french, but even if you don't read it, is worth having it.

Sous les Cocardes, by Marcel JeanJean
And I am forced to put some pictures:

In about 30 pages, JeanJean (who was a pilot in Esc33 in 1917/18) describes the life of a pilot, during his formation then in Escadrille, with great 'pre ligne claire' style humoristic drawings and with some little explicative texts.
A really nice book. It can be found quite easily (I got mine at my local bookstore) but the price varies, older editions can be sold up to 700 euros (these have a preface from Georges Madon), newer are about 40/50 euros.

Re: Bibliography Thread - 03/01/16 11:33 PM

"Combat Report" from Bill Lambert, an American who flew with RAF 24 Squadron in spring and summer 1918, an ace with 18 kills (2nd US scorer of WW1).A book absolutely focused on combat description. Although he relates them in a quiet and simple manner, he ended the war heavily "PTSDed" , having no memories of what happened to him between mid -august and october 1918 !!

Re: Bibliography Thread - 04/02/16 11:44 AM

I have that book and have read it a few times. It is interesting for what he does NOT say, like he talks about the 'quick release' boots he had made without saying why he would need them biggrin He and his pals seem to have had a fine time with girls when on leave without mentioning sex in any way in the book.

I found it interesting that he talks about his invention of 'Whisky on the Rocks' at the Savoy hotel bar in 1918. This I can believe as when I first started frequenting pubs in England in or about 1966 it was rare to have ice available and it was not ever put into whisky. I think it was kept for the saloon bar Gin and Tonic brigade only.

If you study the successes and losses of 24 Squadron you can easily see that they were not a bunch to be taken on easily.

As a point of interest, I worked with the granddaughter of Southey the South African. Her name was also Southey and I asked her if her relation was a WWI pilot. She said that he was, but she never knew him. Like many fighter pilots he was on the short side and so is she!
