What career is everyone doing right now?

What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/04/18 11:28 AM

Been real busy in RL + this time of year is always busy with house/yard stuff. With all that said I have decided to make today a WOFF day as it’s going to be hot. Been a while since I treated myself. Love this game.

With all that preamble out of the way what career is everyone doing right now?

Trying to decide which to lead off with: 56 Squadron (Se5’s), 1 or 60 Squadron (N17’s), or J11 (Alb DIII’s).
Of course I have many, many more Squadron/Jasta/Aircraft favorites but I don’t want to bite off more then I can chew!

German, September 2016, Jasta 8, currently flying a Halberstadt. Other planes are Fokker E IVs.

Here's a save of my boring looking Halberstadt.

Seems like we have a lot of “early air war” (pre-1917) fans here.
Why Jasta 8? And good luck!

RNAS 1, November 1917. Great squadron with many aces.

But no skins!
Yes I have always wanted to try the Bentley in campaign mode. Checked all the RFC-RAF squads and none used it - only the RNAS -RAF units.

Sadly no flying for me recently.
My Pit is totally disassembled for staining/painting... why did I make so many pieces...

Getting her ready for WW1 Rendezvous in Dayton.

Before this I was flying a Snipe campaign.

Guess I am the only one who does the “famous” squadrons. Usually do the old “Hat in the Ring” for that time and nationality. Course I am probably one of the few who like the N28 too!

one pilot in the DID challenge, which will soon be over.

Mostly SH3 these days for me. Sort of lost the flying bug after years of playing.

SH3 is an awesome game. Currently have it installed and have spent many an hour on it.

Skipping the end of the 'DID Challenge' thing, as it's too late in the war for me. I've started my own series of careers for the 104th anniversary, as it was August 3rd when Germany declared war on France. I have two careers running so far, one French and one British, both using the January 1915 campaign start but using Single Combat scenarios to represent August 1914. When I get caught up to 1915 I'll start the actual campaigns.

Duke, maybe I should try SH3. Is it the best of the series in your opinion?

Cheers

hard one to answer. Check out subsim forum where this question has been gone through many times now.

I play sh3 because its well modded and easy to play.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/04/18 06:59 PM

SH3 is certainly well modded and a great game. The graphics (least your crew) is starting to look a bit dated.
Easy to play? Dunno. Guess it all depends on your settings and mods. Try manual torpedo calculation and shooting!

SH4 is another excellent choice and equally mod supported. Graphics are better. Both games have a dedicated and active following. If I had more time I would be playing both a lot.

SH5 I have not tried nor even looked much into. It was a departure from the previous “game style” (may have been modded since then though) and the online requirement (now gone I believe) made it DOA for me in addition to all the great stuff being release for 3 and 4. Didn’t figure it could get much better.

Oh. You can get both SH3 and SH4 on Steam for about 20 bucks IIRC.
I have them both on disc of course but bought them again on Steam just for the convenience.

Thank you sir. I will investigate SH4 on Steam. There seem to be a few tasty supermods available smile

oh, and apologies for slightly derailing your thread Duke smile

I'm flying an N11 in Escadrille VB 103, based at Malzeville, south of Verdun, currently in May 1916. It's a super airfield location, perched on top of a hill, surrounded by other hills and valleys. It always takes me a while to settle into a new pilot career. I usually start and stop several before one finally fits my mood and grabs my interest.

Another long-time SH3 player here. I played the original Silent Hunter back in 1998 (along with Red Baron II), and have played every one since. SH3 is my personal favorite just because of the amount of modding that has been done. SH4 has better graphics and better gameplay, but it came just two years after SH3 and has not had nearly the modding attention the earlier incarnation received. That said, it's the only decent sim for the American submarine service in WW2. One of Subsim's members has been working on a WW1 u-boat conversion for years now.

Garfield Lynns of 54 RAF has already spent 41 days of his 51 day career in hospital. I hate Camels.
Konstantin Smirnov in SPA 57 is doing much better in his SPAD XIII.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/05/18 12:12 AM

I was flying in Jasta 36 for a pretty long time and just got a Fokker D-VIII. On the third mission my guy had a mid air with a French Breguet two seater and that was it! Now I have to start a new campaign but haven't decided which service.

Hate Camels?!? Hard to imagine sir.
Every time I do one (Fall of 1917) I am like Death on Wings with my twin Vickers.
Fall of 1918 may be another story though...

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/05/18 02:48 AM

Duke, Garfield “Bullet Magnet” Lynns hates his machine. If he were a quitter he’d already have transferred to a squadron flying S.E. 5’s. He earned his first trip to the hospital after a landing “accident”. His next trip was earned after he flew into his own bomb blast during an airfield attack and the latest trip to the local hospital was a result of the engine quitting right after he picked up two Fokker D.VII’s on his tail. And the nurses aren’t that pretty either.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/05/18 08:08 AM

Yes. Never faced off with a DVII in a Camel.
The title “Death on Wings” may be premature.
Posted By: ARUP

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/05/18 02:01 PM

I have better luck in a Camel against D-VIIs than if in a D-VII against Camels. I know I'm 'against the grain' on this one but I don't like D-VIIs unless it's the BMW version. My newest guy is flying DH-5s in 24.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/05/18 03:55 PM

DH5! Another bold pilot!
I have yet to fly a DVII as hard as that is (for me anyway) to believe.
Always have one rolled up but....blessed retirement can’t come soon enough.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/05/18 08:53 PM

Camel Jockey!! December 1917. Bloody damn cold even at 5000 feet what!! Just standard line patrols at the moment until CO sends me over the top! Apparently wants me for team leading exercises leading flights of 5 Camels in A flight. Apparently likes the look of me, although I only have 9 hours flight time on Camels and 2 sorties to boot since arriving in Flanders. Apparently, the CO knows my old man back in Blighty and is keeping a close eye on me. Don't like it myself as I want to be able to prove myself a worthy pilot for the sake of the other fellows in my squadron. We''ll have to see what happens. Tally Ho!!

Camels are a fun plane to fly. What squadron?

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/06/18 02:17 AM

I'm currently slowly moving through March 1916 with an Airco DH.2 and RFC 24 (Hawker's squadron.) Since I'm trying to wean myself off time compression again, I'm not going very quickly (haha), but just enjoying the scenery and the occasional Eindecker. No kills yet. Last flight my wingman decided to get into a fight without me. He and I had words when we got back!

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/06/18 02:38 AM

Unfortunately, for me, TC is a necessary evil.
Wish I had enough time to fly a mission at normal speed. Usually TC the form-up and climb to altitude plus, for the Allies, the trip to the front. Some of the squads are really in the rear!
Posted By: CatKnight

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/06/18 03:38 AM

Oh I still use TC for getting to the front, or when I have a long way to go home and don't expect anything to happen. I use Ctrl+W to get past the climb to altitude as well - I find the AI and we are perfectly capable of climbing en route.

On a side note, I spent the evening downloading and installing a LOT of mods. That last mission felt like I was playing a whole new game. All our great modders have my highest respect and gratitude!

The modders have certainly done awesome work for this game with tweaks here and there.
God bless the lot of them.

Thanks DukeIronHand! S! The DH-5 can roll well. That's about its only attribute... roll one way or t'other while pulling 'up' elevator to get away from those pesky Albi!!! The full scale version was supposed to be able to dive like a brick but that isn't true in the SIM. I love flying crummy aircraft like the DH-5 and Pfalz and surviving!

Hi all, I have 2 of them going while waiting for WOTR to come out. then I will drop one if they live.

Sgt, pilot 11 Rfc Bristol Scouts Feb 1916.

I had a 1 Squadron career going in 1918 too. Se5’s. What a great plane.
All this talk has me itching to play.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/19/18 01:14 AM

after a four year hiatus I'm finally playing the game again. my old computer could just BARELY handle the Hat in the Ring on all of the lowest settings. it got to be so time consuming that I just stopped playing it because it took forever to load basic missions. I figured I would wait it out and get a nice machine later. I can crank everything up to the highest settings and have pretty smooth gameplay now on WOFF UE. just doing basic turkey shoots (Camels shooting down Aviatik B.Is and so on to get used to things).

I'm impressed by how easy it is to shoot down zeppelins... once you finally reach them.

I'm glad that the French player has a larger variety of names for his squad mates! it used to be that you would have the same twelve last names used over and over again! sometimes having two or three randomly generated AI wingmen with the same name!

the mod has really come a long way.

I hope to enjoy/squander hundreds of hours on this nifty mod.

I do miss the outrageous volume of aircraft that we saw in RB3d... but for the actual experience of flying missions this is a huge improvement.

thanks to the development team for all of those years of hard work.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/19/18 11:22 PM

I have a guy flying Hannovers! They are great! He has bagged three SPADs so far, too! The trick to surviving is if you see anything that looks remotely like a bad guy then dive away! Spin away to lose height. Yes... I am 'hähnchen' but survive better than most. Try to engage only if you can fly at tree top level and try to fly over friendly encampments. You risk pranging your buggy but the bad guys are worse for it and crash more often.

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/20/18 10:04 AM

I just have the DiD career going right now. It is more than enough flying for me. Just transferred back to a Brisfit Sqn, a plane I never expected to like, but very quickly became my favourite to fly surpassing even the Camel. It is surprisingly maneuverable, stalls gently, and has teeth on both ends.
Posted By: DukeIronHand

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/20/18 10:17 AM

I’ve had several Brisfit careers.
Problem is, since I usually fly like a maniac in combat, I rarely hear from my partner in the back seat!
Posted By: Dark_Canuck

Re: What career is everyone doing right now? - 08/20/18 02:58 PM

Yes, it does take a certain amount of effort to keep your observer in the war, but it can be worth it in many circumstances, especially if you can get below and slightly in front of Hun two seaters.

"Willy" Kaulitz, Jasta 2, January 1917. Even though poor Willy is the leading Kanonen in the Jasta, with his 14 victories, he's still flying an old hand-me-down Albatros DI (from Boelcke himself, while less accomplished fliegers are flying D IIs, and even a few D IIIs. Apparently, Herr Hauptmann dislikes Willy. Willy had been promised a new D III to accompany his Blue Max, but when "Little Manny" (he hates it when Willy calls him "Manny") went off to take command of Jasta 11, he took Willy's D III with him.
