Senior mod required - 06/27/18 06:48 PM

Hi all,
I've been asked by a chap who is 90 years old and bought WOFF UE a few weeks ago, if there is any way we can help him to gain victories in the air.
As he told me his reflexes at that age are not as keen as theu used to be.

I checked with OBD (Pol) but as expected they are max'd out with WOTR right now.
I've sent him details of how to adjust his workshop settings - he'll let me know how that goes..

Given the expertise of our moders (grovel), I wonder if we could create a small mod for him and anyone else in a similar situation, to easily install to increase the effectiveness of his weapons and maybe something to help him with the range.
I'm not a guru in this field but it would be nice to have a self installing mod that he could easily drop into WOFFUE to help him become the 'ace' he wants to be.

If anyone can PM me if you think you can crack it,

Thanks,

Mike

In Workshop settings, change Player Weapons to STRONGEST. Change Front Guns and Rear Guns for AI to Less Accurate. Set Claims to Easiest so he automatically gets credit for kills. He could start with that and see if that helps some.

Thank you for your interest in my situation, I have tried all the suggestions in Workshop but nothing is helping, I guess I have to wait and see if someone makes a mod.

Hi Mike;

There is a mod that makes the tracers more visible. That would could help with assessing range or at least tracking your volleys. Has he tried that. If the mod isn't available to him I could make it so.

Isn’t all this like bullet dispersion, strength, etc in a, easy to edit, .xml file?
Least they used to be.

Another option, if he hasn't tried yet, is to disable the head movement. I have a heck of a time aiming with the cockpit swimming all over the screen. Might be another suggestion?

I don't think there is an easy mod solution for all these suggestions and I suspect that it may be too much to ask the user to adjust all the settings. I may be wrong though.

I thought this same at first, but there is unwanted adverse effect - your enemy will get the same edge over you - "silver bullets". If you decrease dispersion and increase effective damage of bullets/guns, then it is available for everyone - friend or foe :-(.

Ouch! Thought it was just for you.
Be the shortest dogfights in history though. smile
Thanks JJJ.

the head movement would be my first thought after workshop settings (in d3d8.ini, set headshake = 0). otherwise, just fly some quick combats with a late plane vs. early enemy, like a Camel v. EIII, or DVII v. Be2. Not historical, but it should get you some kills. I've also gotten some fun out of strafing ground objects like trains and trucks, but enemy troops almost always kill me, so look out for them.

Hi all, I tried all of your suggestions the tracers helped some.
I tried to edit the xdp file of the Off_ Lewis_air file in OBDWW1Over Flanders Field / Guns but it just reverts back to the original settings once the program starts. I thought that because I am flying for the British in a DH2 and it has the Lewis gun this would be what it could be using.
I could not find anything else that might help.
Thanks All

Tonym;

can you tell us just what the key issues are that you need addressed. I assume from your last post that you now have tracers being displayed that meet your needs.

Also please identify what you were hoping to achieve in editing the xdp file for the Off-Lewis_air file.

Best Regards;

Robert_Wiggins,

I was looking to increase the range to around 400 yd's and add some more mass.

Thank you;

Re: Senior mod required - 07/03/18 04:37 PM

Tonym,

you must locate gun files and modify them at this location (assuming you have set guns to Easy):

Quote
<drive letter>:\OBDSoftware\WOFF\WOFFScenery\Difficulty\Easy\playerguns

WOFF loads gun settings before every mission from above location and overwrites files in game folder.
However, remember, every plane using modified guns become real "killer" :-).

Tony;

JJJ65 is correct. If I get the time today I can create a mod for you based on the specs you provided. It would be a JSGME mod which you could swap in or out as the need arises. I just need to know which guns you want done and what specs per gun.

Thank you all for your help and consideration.
Will try this.

Robert;

Since I fly for Britain I think the Lewis guns are the one I use, Range 400, mass increase, damage increase.
I have them set strongest in workshop, is that what you call easy ?

Ok Tony, leave it with me and I will PM you with a link to the JSGME mod as soon as I have it ready.

Robert;

Thank you, this will make my experience with WOFF enjoyable.

Re: Senior mod required - 07/04/18 12:24 PM

Tonym, I also just learned (!) that the d3d8.ini file that you would adjust is NOT the one in the main OverFlandersFields folder. That one will get overwritten by another one that's in the WOFFScenery/shaders folder. That's the one to change headshake values that will show up. Robert_Wiggins had a mod a while back for this and explained it: it's in the User mods page, under effects/enhanced cockpit gforces (ankor), or just go to that file on your computer.

Holey Mackeral! Let us all join in a hearty welcome for Tonym! 90 years young and going after .ini file edits, mods, etc! You da man! We might even have to waive the "new guy buys the drinks" rule and set this man up!

The only other WOFF UE flyer I know or that's older is hood, he still posts occasionally over on the other board - he's 94, God bless him!

I have following this topic and now this has been solved, I can publish my OT reply.
Tonym a warm welcome to this forum. I suppose you use glasses, just try also an spectable made for reading on your monitor. Just go to your locale optical discounter an ask for information about computer glasses. I got my for €19,- complete at the local Specsavers, never did see so sharp the details on my 27” monitor. My cheapished hardware investment and I’m a better shooter now.

Re: Senior mod required - 07/16/18 01:43 PM

I’ve returned to WOFF after a multi-year hiatus. I’m obviously older. My eyesight is worse. And I can’t hit much of anything. So I know the problems us seniors face.

But then it hit me! On my old rig I wasn’t running at a 1900 resolution. I used to run at 1600. So I lowered the resolution, in both WOFF and on my home screen, to 1600. Voila! Everything is bigger! I can see again!

So that’s my recommendation. Lower the resolution! Make those bandits look bigger! Moreover, I suspect it takes a load off the graphics card.

Re: Senior mod required - 07/16/18 02:48 PM

Another suggestion I can toss in for those with less than ideal eyesight: turn on Dots! At higher resolution it's actually harder for me to pick up enemy aircraft in the air - and as a simulation FAQ once put it, a monitor cannot replicate human eyesight (maybe 4K but this was written back in the 90s so...) so the dots actually correct for the failings of the hardware (or at least that's what I like to tell myself!). Should make picking up targets a bit easier.

This is a great option as far as it goes... I have altered the 'UI.xml' file to make the 'Dots' look like the capital letter "O", instead of a tiny period, "." . Also, I have made the "O" BOLD, increased the distance at which they are seen AND made the "O" Bright Red instead of black. This makes spotting distant A/C MUCH easier for my older eyes. It also has the interesing and rather realistic effect of making them 'disappear' in the sun.
