OT - Women flew Spitfires also!

Indeed they flew all types, incluiding bombers. They delivered them from factory and air bases usually, releasing their male counterparts who would have been doing that role normally, and allowed those freed extra pilots to go to front line squadrons.

But let's be realistic..... for every 500 man flying, there was 1 woman ?

What most of us would give to pilot one....

They delivered planes fresh-from-the-factory to their units in Britain. They were young girls, most of whom had never left home before, most of whom couldn't drive a car. In "Spitfire Sisters", one girl talks about getting her multi-engine rating. A 'light-weight', Two-engined Anson was used. Next morning, bright and early, they drove her to the end of the runway and deposited her in front of her first delivery of the day. "Good God!" she said. "That's a bloody Lancaster! I was checked out on an Anson." "No worries, girly." said the sargeant. "They all work the same way." She feared she'd not have the strength to wrestle the controls, but, in the event, the Lanc was quite docile and easy to fly. Still, she felt she had been thrown into the deep end of the pool.

Those women probably flew more types than the vast majority of combat pilots,with the exception of 'Winkle' Brown of course.
