Stache, I will be fully retired, footloose and fancy free in 2018. Actually on Dec. 22 of this year. If still kicking I plan on being there!

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 09/23/17 03:03 PM

Sounds Good Mark,

Looking forward to seeing everyone,

I still have a few more years before retirement (of any sort).

I have emailed Ken O'Brian mentioning that I thought we would need more space this time around.
Ken responded, due to the sunlight issues affecting TrackIR he will check to see if he can have our own tent for ROF and WOFF. (Have not been able to switch him over yet.)
Speaking of this issue, please see my a post I will make shortly about EdTracker.

My pit is currently undergoing more revisions, but I plan to bring the triple monitor / VKB Gunfighter Pro setup.
My friend James should have his new setup there also he is running a 4K monitor.
We are planning on renting a truck as this stuff will no longer fit in my SUV.

Last time our presentation of WOFF was mostly ad-hoc.
I hope we have a discussion here of the best way to present WOFF.

If I can get things arranged I will be making the trek to Dayton next year again as well. Last year was a blast! And, at this next one, if all goes according to plan, I'll be two months away from retirement - WOOO HOOO! bananadance

AFAIK there will be another League of WW1 Aviation Historians seminar tied in with that event, so I'll be there again, too.

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 10/01/17 02:37 PM

I'm going! I plan having a 1/4 scale DH-5, two 1/5 Fokker Drls and, possibly, a 1/4 scale Hansa Brandenberg KD 'Starstrutter' and 1/6 scale Macchi M5 seaplane (with some hidden? wheels).

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 10/31/17 10:29 PM

I have a questions for those of you who have been there before?
How handicap accessible is it? I have an uncle who'd love to go, but is stuck in either a wheel chair or scooter these days.

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 11/01/17 12:10 AM

It is on a grassy field next to a runway. There are no paved areas.
The last time it had rained quite a bit before the show but the field held up good.
We had to give a push to some of the heavy food vending trucks. But I had no problems driving on the grass.
There are vendors and exhibitors in tents (no floors).

The AF Museum is not within walking distance, it is on the other side of the airfield.

The show is in the red area belown.

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 11/16/17 01:57 AM

What would folks here like to see at Dayton: a 1/4 scale Hansa Brandenburg KD 'Starstrutter' (~82" span) or a 1/6 scale Aviatik C-I (~84" span)? I'm going to start drawing plans and cutting wood very soon! I like them both but, alas, can only build one at a time due to space constraints.
Posted By: JFM

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 11/16/17 12:26 PM

My vote is for the Hansa Brandenburg.

Do they have some water to fly it from? I don't recall seeing any in 2015.
Posted By: ARUP

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 11/17/17 01:41 AM

No water, just a large grassy area. No float Hansa! That thing was a terrible flying airplane with wheels and I can only imagine what a handful the float version was! It's either the Hansa Brandenburg 'Starstrutter' or the Aviatik C-I. You never see models like the Hansa and two-holers aren't very 'romantic' from a 'would be' fighter pilot's perspective. They really deserve being modeled more often! I will build both but which will be first? The tension builds.......

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 11/17/17 11:58 AM

.

ARUP, being a B/R man at heart I would prefer to see you direct your attention and talent towards the Aviatik. As bizarrely cool as the Starstrutter is I'd much rather get a close-up look at the C-I.

.
Posted By: Robert_Wiggins

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 11/17/17 01:28 PM

A C-I! ME TOO! Although the Branden would be great to see as well because I too have never seen one.

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 12/09/17 05:22 PM

Hi All,

I have been invited to attend a planning meeting on Tuesday the 19th for the 2018 Rendezvous.
Not sure what the content will be, but thought I would ask the forum to see if there are any topics you would like be to bring up.

One suggestion is a dedicated tent for the simulators - (WOFF / rof) to allow for better control of ambient light so there is less interference for TrackIR.
More space will be another, I would hope to have a better presentation area where more features of WOFF could be shown.
Some of you experts talking about creating / managing pilots, their careers, the different planes, all the flight groups for all the nations.

Any other thoughts to showcase WOFF?

2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous
Sept. 22 & 23, 2018
Dayton Ohio

Thanks for your feedback.

Bumping this thread
The Rendezvous will be here before you know it.

Planning is moving along.
Are there other forum members who are thinking of attending?
I would like to have a discussion of how we would present WOFF.
Looking for input from everyone.

James and I will be taking our systems. I will have my pit.
I also plan to have a 37" TV for showing videos on.
Need to develop a list of videos.

Considering having a rule 16 and older to use our systems.

Last time we were just doing some Air Start QC missions.
I was thinking we need to improve on that.

I live nearby, so I also plan to be there.

Besides, who could turn down a chance to talk and listen to such great storytellers such as Raine, Robert Wiggins, and anyone else who plans to attend!

(Interesting tidbit: my step-mother, when she was a small child, once shook the hand of Orville Wright! Her father helped to develop negative-g carburetors or fuel systems in post WWI aircraft).

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 03/31/18 01:23 AM

Well, I've been hesitant to commit to it - I brought my brother-in-law and my oldest son along last year and felt like I didn't contribute like I could have. Great time, it was wonderful meeting you all, but face it, they aren't into it like this company of the barmy, and I'm thinking about coming solo if possible. I've really been out of the loop, though, and we've been knutz busy at work - I've got over 1/3 of my usual yearly earnings in these first 3 months... Maybe, just maybe, I'll get in the air over this weekend, but of course it's Easter (which is really special to me) and I need to change the oil in both vehicles, the mowers, all that - but wow... to hang about unfettered with y'all would be great. The dinner was something.

(wanders off scratching chin wistfilly...)

Hi,

Is anyone else planning / thinking about bringing any equipment, either to be use to fly WOFF or to show Videos?

Jame's and I will have our WOFF systems.
I will have a 37" TV and notebook to show videos on.

Figuring out space requirements.

Thanks.

Stache;

I have a question regarding registration.
Do you know if denise Bollingerf or Ken O'Brien are able to accept registration by fax or e-mail with (signed forms attached); and accept Banquet payment by VISA over the phone.

Best Regards

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 06/20/18 08:36 PM

Hi Robert,

Pretty sure they will accept email with Scanned Signed Images of the forms.
(Send them to Denise)

Do not know about VISA - you could check with Denise, I am hedging toward probably not.

If you need me to write a check and mail it let me know.

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 06/22/18 02:48 PM

Robert and gang,

I corresponded with Denise. You can scan and email your registration. Also, the deadline for registration and submitting your cheque / money order (for us Canucks) for the dinner has been put off to July 30. They can't take Visa. As Denise put it, they're in dinosaur mode, so it's a matter of sending money by snail mail.

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 06/22/18 03:55 PM

Stache, Raine, .....

I have sent off my registration by email to denise, indicating that I will send off originals by postal mail along with my bank money order for the banquet night. I requested confirmation of receipt so I hope everything goes well.

Best Regards

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 07/04/18 04:57 PM

Alas! The 100th Anniversary and I cannot attend! My daughter, who has been quite punctual, is due to deliver her 3rd child and 1st boy that very weekend. My beloved and I deem it just to close for comfort. We have to be prepared at any hour to care for the granddaughters whilst Mom & Dad head for the hospital. Poor boy. 3 "mommies"... I told my son-in-law he has a heavy responsibility to help the poor boy escape!

Well, next year is 101... and Lord willing, there will be a 111... I really enjoyed the last one and was planning on coming by myself so I could spend more time with y'all. But when I asked my dear beloved about it, she said, "well, the baby is due that weekend..." And so my plans quickly went down in flames, spin, crash and burn!

But I will be there in spirit and I know Mike & the rest of you will do a wonderful job of WOFF-UE Evangelism!

Stache,

I didn't see your first post in time to get registered...what do I miss by just showing up? Since it's the 100 year anniversary, looks like they'll be pulling out all the stops. I'm considering riding my Goldwing 800 miles to this event, probably my last big ride for the season.
Posted By: Stache

Re: OT: 2018 World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - 09/12/18 08:44 PM

Hi BirdDog,

Wow 800 miles, only 200 for me. But I'll be in a rental van. The Goldwing sounds much better and faster.

You will miss the Dinner in the Museum for participants on Saturday night. There is a chance tickets could be purchased on site.
You will miss getting the participate T-Shirt.

You will enjoy the company of a bunch of great people and soak in a lot of WW1 atmosphere.

Cross you fingers - Weather is looking okay right now.

Hope to see you there.

Aces over Wright field (the group we are associated with aka ROF flyers) will still have a tent.

The medical procedure got delayed until tomorrow.

At this point I am still planning on attending.

Will not be staying for the banquet on Sunday night. (thought it was on Saturday night).

Gents, I am absolutely green with envy, though certainly welcoming a grandson is much the priority... it figures, you do durn near nothing recreational all year and two really good things happen exactly together! Lou, CW3SF, & others I well remember 2 years ago and was really looking forward to the 100th anniversary, figuring as BirdDogICT said that they'd have a much bigger celebration. Plus i was going to come by myself and try to lend much more support to the WOFF effort. You all were great to meet & swap stories with. Ahh, so be it. Jenks, congratulations, daughters steal your heart!

Thanks to all for the kind words. Oh and by the way, my Dad, a WWII vet, turns 94 today.
