South of the Somme

South of the Somme - 03/30/17 02:35 PM

Looking for a little feedback here.
Are campaigns south of the Somme sufficiently dense, or does one find relatively empty skies when flying for Germany ?
Cheers,

Any particular time period?

Any or all. I jwould just like some sense of whether we still have relatively empty skies compared to the northern half of the Front

In Olham's DID I flew with the Lafayette Escadrille and then the Americans and most of my time was spent in the Marne region. I don't remember the skies being empty, as a matter of fact, I always ran into trouble. Is this the sort of information you wanted?

Re: South of the Somme - 04/01/17 03:28 PM

"For Germany" was the issue.
I checked my German careers and the Somme River is on the far southern end of my usual patrol areas.
No shortage of enemies - certainly the (overly IMHO) adventurous French Squadrons.
Getting ready to play and I have not flown German since the latest patch. Guess this gives me an excuse to do so.

EDIT: Guess you can disregard. Using the Somme River as a dividing line none of my usual German careers go south of there.

Yep, you're right. I guess I should thoroughly read the OP when responding. biggrin

Yeah, I'm wondering how dense it is in the Champagne and the Vosges, or if it's a snooze

Re: South of the Somme - 04/01/17 06:32 PM

My current DiD campaign started with 3 Wing RNAS in the Vosges. Activity was certainly lighter in October 1916 than it would have been in Flanders, but there were engagements once you crossed the lines and the activity level seemed about right for the region and period. Once the Wing relocated to Ochey and missions headed north towards Verdun there was more activity.

Flying for Jasta 10 in Dec. 1916 in Verdun, based at Sivry. Not much French traffic here. I get to meet an unescorted pair of Caudrons from time to time. Sometimes with a single escorts, but haven't seen a flight of Nieuports of more than 2 for a while now. I probably will have to fend off whole squadrons now that I've said that.

Thanks. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for

Re: South of the Somme - 04/03/17 11:00 PM

Shredward, I just had my Jasta 10 HA's turn in their Alb D.II's for the rusty Halb D.II's. Is this normal? Around Dec. 17, 1916.
Received a message earlier (Dec. 12) that we're getting an upgrade - shiny new Halb D.II, which I ignored, because we already had them for ages.

I have experienced the same, but I supposes I damaged something with my "modding experiments".
Now it seems there is some data bug in Jasta 10 file?

Re: South of the Somme - 04/04/17 05:44 PM

I had that happen in Jasta 1. We were flying Albs DI and we traded them in for Fokker DIIs.

Re: South of the Somme - 04/04/17 07:30 PM

The same thing has happened several times to me (in various units). I usually get back into the better plane fairly quickly. I don't use many mods so I don't think that's the cause. My theory is that it happens when additional HAs join the squadron and there aren't enough of the best planes for both them and me so I get bumped down.

I thought the sim took into account historical supply problems with parts and aircraft temporarily being taken out of service due to parts shortages, etc. I could be totally wrong there , though. For some reason I want to say I remember reading it on the forum a long time ago. *shrug*

WOFF does take aircraft in and out of service in a historically correct method and time. Within the limits of the game engine of course.
For example: Fok/Dr.1's are in service in Fall 1917 replacing, generally, the Alb DV then being themselves replaced by Alb DV's again in the next "game cycle" reflecting the wing issues experienced by the Triplane. They are latter brought back a couple of months later just like in real life. Pretty slick on OBD's (Shredwards?) part. The WOFF database is awesome and a treasure in itself.

With that said I am unfamiliar with the above Jasta's and time period so....

Re: South of the Somme - 04/05/17 12:43 AM

That's what I thought initially, that they're falling back on the Halbs because of the weak lower wing fiasco, but we didn't get the Alb D.III's yet and it's a few months too early for that. The weird part is I got to keep my Alb D.II and they got stuck with Halbs D.II's despite the availability of Halbs D.III's and their ranks being high enough to get those. Never've seen that before.

Hi Guys,
I'll take a look at it when I get back from France, but off the top of my head, Ja10 had a real mix of equipment, and then when the Fokkers were withdrawn in early December, they reequipped as a Halb unit.

Yes. Plane assignment (whatever the issue above, if there even is one, aside) can be a little "funny" as you mix Jasta HA's, you, and new/replacement planes. Least as of several patches ago - have not been in the position to see recently.

Back in the day, when your Jasta received a partial re-equip of newer planes, the HA's present - even if they had 0 victories or were brand-new, would get the new plane while you, the 12 victory ace and salty dog, would continue in the older aircraft till a set date (usually when the whole unit should have them) even though the unit has 4 or 6 of the new planes in reserve.

Minor issue but a Campaign Editor would fix that real quick.

Shredward, now that 1917 rolled on, this is what I keep seeing in the skies. No tweaks needed for that year in Verdun.
