Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/02/12 12:57 PM

You'd better have your disc-duplicators cranked up for when you release this beauty! DO WANT!

The haze and the view towards the horizon keep grabbing me as very realistic -and that first pic especially, toward the ground - the ground scenery is great, but as well what you have the atmosphere do to the ground appearance - very much like the views from aloft. Second one as well, though to be honest the clouds there aren't quite as good as many of the other shots - still, all in all a vast improvement. It amazes me what you guys are doing while hamstrung with 10 year old code.

Geeze, Micro$oft, if our devs here even had the same code "moderninzed", I'd probably have to put a seat belt on my swivel chair & a barf bucket beside it!

I can only offer encouragement - I can't imagine what it's like to do what you are doing, file & revision management, historical research, all that skinning work, code optimization, try this try, that... Bless you all, hang in there.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/02/12 03:07 PM

This is definitely looking like Flanders - great job, Winder!
Now, if only I knew where he started "knitting" the whole of Framce new: North Sea or Alsace?
Cause knowing that, would give us a hint of how far he is...

I am glad that the Albatros D.V now looks like clear varnished plywood, instead of yellow.
I know, this originated from a descrition by someone from the old day, that the Albatros
"look like straw" (which we worked with as kids in school, and yes - there it was yellow).
But today we can see the wonderful photos of the "Vintage Aviator's" replicas, and I see you
skinners have hit the right tone now. Good job!

Nice! I like the ploughed fields and seeing how the river starts at a branching headwater. Excellent work all around.

Looks like you haven't only revamped the skins but also some of the models?
At least that Fokker D.VII looks much more "real" to me than before.

The pockmarked landscape looks miles better than "another sim".

Some of the FE2b in formation.

One has dropped behind due to damage

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/06/12 01:46 PM

Wow - these Fees almost look too good to shoot them down!
The scenery, the sky breathe a realism, as if I could feel the cold, and also sense the clarity of the air.
As if I could be alive in a time more than 90 years ago.
Posted By: Polovski

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/06/12 03:04 PM

Yes Olham most models have been improved or revamped, some even remade. The air does feel crisp and fresh up there sometimes - so many good things to see these days.

Beautiful. I will probably get shot down a few times in my first couple of missions in WOFF simply because I am paying too much attention to the new models and scenery!

BTW, those pictures with the wounded Fee in the distance makes me think the LOD's have also been updated? They seem to stand out more with more detail than before?

OK guys I have been out of action for a while (shot down over the lines) but escaped. Slowly on the mend so have a little strength to post these new screenshots taken by WM earlier of the Sopwith Pup over some great new scenery - looking fantastic.

Shows a new feature in there too I'll let you conjecture..

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/22/12 03:36 PM

It looks like the LOD has improved loads as you can really see the decals on those planes on the airfield...looks amazing. Hopefully by next Xmas I can be playing it. Though I'm really hoping for an April release to fit in with Bloody April.

Shot down over the lines? Car accident or something like that?
Pol, I hope it's nothing too serious - good recovery, man!

A new feature, you say?
The horizon in the first 3 pics looks somehow totally new to me - could it be?
Or have I only ever flown in misty weather?

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/23/12 09:57 PM

Not sure what the new feature is but I'd have to agree with Olham though that the skyline looks far improved over OFF. Also, as Wodin pointed out, the details seem to be much crisper even in the far distance. Truly fantastic stuff.

More importantly, keep the old feature of you being healthy please. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. Heal first! Program second, sir.

As always, thank you for taking the time to share these with us. It keeps us going just as much to see them as it does you to hear the feedback.

The lighting in the first shot is almost like a strong reflection from the ground, or another cloud?
And in the second, the Eindecker shot, the clouds and lighting make an amazing "cloudscape"!

Lovely pics.. it's going to be another 'must have'!
One small thing though, if more pics are going to be added to this thread, any chance of making them vertical instead of horizontaly aligned?

In Firefox you've to right click above the image:

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/24/12 08:37 PM

In Firefox they are vertically alligned! Stacked on top of one another.
Guess IE sees it differently :/.

I have no idea how to make them horizontal or vertical in both.

In IE at least you can save the picture and then view I guess. I will have to upload somewhere else otherwise uploading here in the normal manner the jpgs get recompressed and you lose quality.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/24/12 08:51 PM

Yes, I checked Internet Explorer - the pics are floating right there (horizontal).

But: you have a scroll bar; and you can zoom in per "Ctrl" and the "+" key several notches.
To get out, you press "Ctrl" and "-" as often.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/28/12 12:30 PM

Pol, you said there was a new feature in the last screenshots, but no one seemed to hit the nail.
My last attempt: is there a new airspeed indicator on the strut of the Pup?
UncleAl wrote to me, that he detected a freshly ploughed field, which we didn't have before.
If none of these is right - what is it then?
You could at least give us a hint - is it in the scenery, or on the aircraft?

Holy snappin' duck crap! ... those screenshots are freakin' awesome!! Keep going Pol and team ... sorry to hear you were in the hospital mate ... I hope you're back at full RPM now for take-off!!

Health is both a precious and precarious thing. When we think about all of the things that could go wrong in our bodies, it's amazing they function as well as they do. My sincerest hopes the good doctors have got things well in hand and you are on the mend sir.

As for the new AI feature of them taking off to intercept...that is fantastic. Suddenly strafing airfields isn't just a matter of avoiding the ground fire anymore! About time those pesky AI got a taste of their own Scramble Missions! Let's see how they like it. Ha! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to turn the tables on them in WOFF.

Sorry to hear that you have been under the weather, Pol. It's bad enough with one stint in the hospital, but two?!! Is it the food, or is Nurse Gladys there to tend to your wounds?

In any event, glad to hear you are nearing back to snuff, but don't do anything too rash which may delay your recovery. WOFF can wait (gasp)!

The new shots are looking brilliant, guys!
You have so much improved the close-on reality look of the planes.

One thing makes me wonder here - the Parasol in the first picture seems to
have a funny additional V-strut under it's belly, behind the undercarriage?
Posted By: Polovski

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 11/18/12 12:43 AM

Thanks Olham, it's where some of the wires meet for the pulleys and from the control stick.
Posted By: Olham

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 11/18/12 12:56 AM

So this V-strut is just hidden by the gear in the other pics, cause there I cannot trace it.
Thank you, Pol.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 11/18/12 01:33 AM

As great as the screenshots are, I keep going back to the videos and how far improved the flight models are, which capture the illusion of flight so well. I see the screenshots and I imagine the planes flying as the ones in the video do and it makes it all feel incredibly organic.

As for the screenies themselves, they are fantastic. The models, the colors...it's all meticulously done. We are all certainly in for a fine treat when it's done.

Thanks for sharing Pol and I hope that you are on the mend sir!

Seems you have really remodeled parts of or the whole Fokker Dr.1 and "Razor"?
As I said before - they appear larger now, like real aircraft.

Enlarging (clicking) the last picture reveals some well improved aids for the newbies.
Well, some of that (like the name of my closest wingman) could even be helpful for me.

Pol, show us some of the nicer weather too occasionally - the winter is grey enough.

Direct links should work now too in the post below.

I have posted loads of fine weather shots, now back to reality how it SHOULD be in WW1 wink

Naw, you're right - I read somewhere, that the historical WW1 weather was often

Posted By: Polovski

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/17/12 11:46 AM

Thanks guys, just for clarity as I see some negative comments elsewhere. The "Haze" in OFF does not "hide" performance issues, it actually takes more processing to do. On some days there is less haze of course. We can run with zero haze if necessary, with 1000s trees in view etc etc.

Also in WW1 the weather WAS BAD much more than many times in history. It's a fact it was terrible (deep mud in the trenches anyone)? We are simulating WW1 not a holiday flying lesson.
However you can override the historical weather for sunny days if that's what you prefer.
Posted By: Wodin

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/17/12 01:57 PM

Pol...take no notice..I've studied enough of WW1 and seen enough pics top know you get it spot on compared to anyone else out there..
Posted By: HumanDrone

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/17/12 02:05 PM

I'm with you there, Pol - I've said before and will say again that these are the most realistic skies I've ever seen, and I've spent quite a while looking out airplane windows. And, as you say, the weather WAS unusually bad. But the great thing is, even when I go up on sunny days in OFF, it still "feels" like I'm flying, to an almost uncanny degree.

And for the naysayers, again, Pol is correct - haze is another processing task that everything "visible" must be filtered through. A clear atmosphere is actually easier to deal with.

Can you provide sources for these "facts?" Not to sound snobby or anything but didn't planes typically only leave the airfield in fair weather unless it was a major offensive of some sort?

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/18/12 05:42 AM

Yes, we can. The RFC and RAF Communiques, the Nachrichtenblatt, unit war diaries and histories, personal diaries and memoirs, journals, met records, artillery and unit logs, articles, etc. We have been accumulating all this info for years now, and have had help from several people who take a great interest in the historical accuracy of this sim. And to answer your other question, yes, in the early days of the war they were largely fair weather flyers. As time went on and engines and a/c developed, there were very few days when there was absolutely no activity. We try to model the various levels of activity, and weather, in OFF

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/18/12 06:56 AM

The passage about the battle of Cambrai in Arthur Gould Lee's book "No Parachute!"
comes to my mind - a good example for flying under very unfair conditions.
There was thick fog all day, when they had to perform their attacks on the German
lines southwest of Cambrai. The fog was actually so thick, that Lee could only veer
from a factory chimney in the very last second. He lost his wingman in the mist.
His Sopwith Camel was later found - it had crashed into a tree; the pilot was dead.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/23/12 01:06 PM

Great screenies as always..I have only one thing that doesn't seem right since the first shots came out..thats the wheat\corn fields..not sure if it's the colour but in the old OFF they seemed to blend in and look abit more natural...

I can't quite put my finger on it, they just really stand out compared to the darker grass.

Also most farmland in the UK is grass land for cattle etc..maybe it's different in France but very rarely do you see fields upon field of corn\wheat.
Posted By: Creaghorn

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/23/12 01:28 PM

here is a screenie from the roubaix area. woof pics are quite close to that. as you can see in previous pics the colour of the field is lot dependent of time of the year. british fields look differently than french fields, which is also already noticable in p3.

in fact, there is no sim out there who makes the regions of northern france and flanders look so realistic. no teletubbyland nor golfcourse.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/23/12 03:15 PM

Winder developed the landscapes from a huge pile of photos I have taken on my various trips to France and the Front, as well as other sources. I think he has done a great job. Creaghorn's satellite shots show the same contrasts. I was always struck by the incongruity. It is largely due to the soils found on the Front from about Arras right down to Alsace. Belgian soils are quite different, as of course, are British landscapes.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/23/12 03:51 PM

I have lived on a farm for three years, and so I have seen the crop / corn fields
of northern Germany a lot during three summers. They have a very pale colour, like
they do in Winder's new landscapes. If they were "warmer" and more "golden" in OFF,
then the older ones were slightly "wrong" = too warm toned.
The paler colour is definitely right.
But maybe when the sun goes down, and we have the late afternoon golden hours, they
will look warmer / more golden again.

sorry, i meant there is no other sim out there who makes the regions of northern france and flanders look as realistic as WOFF does. no teletubbyland nor golfcourse.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/23/12 07:38 PM

I had a feeling it looked more real in WOFF but I'm not used to it...also lighting will have a big effect..I expect on on clear days crops look so bright and overcast it would be duller..Still again it's probably just getting used to it..and in the Uk most farmalnd these days is for pasture...so you don't see it s often.

I agree though it certainly better than other sims i can think off..

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/23/12 09:51 PM

Where the fields are bright (as they were) then it's usually summer or spring, there are other shots you can see other seasons with much darker fields. Both are accurate. Even England has unique scenery textures, and each area has all the seasons too accurately designed by Winding Man. He has vast experience in working on terrain - terrain that sometimes you really believe you are there - some feat. As Shred says he provided plenty of images for WM to study and of course he has his own research data. WOFF's front lines are even more realistic (P3 was good but WOFF is even better).

Don't forget we have FIVE unique regions, i.e. 5 unique sets of "scenery". EACH with seasonal textures, and also extras including snow.

Any picture or series is often from ONE of these combinations

How about these Autumn pics;

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!

The Trees look a touch to green for autumn..abit more yellow and browns and the odd reds I'd like to see...again minor quibble oh and a bit less foliage. STill amazing shots though.

Pol I think you should put some of the plane screenshots up in the screenshot forum aswell...

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/24/12 05:50 PM

Anyone with any doubts about the colours on Winder's palette ought to fire up Google Earth and center it on Northern France. Zoom in and out and it'll be clear that Winder's got it right (if anything the real thing is even paler).
Posted By: Wodin

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 12/24/12 09:18 PM

Dezh..that is what I meant actually I thought it should be paler and a touch less vibrant, it's the contrast between the very dark grass and the corn\wheat. Again though I've never been up in a plane so I wouldn't know and I'm sure Windingman has it spot on.

Thanks Wodin, yes the scarf is on just a couple of craft for fun. Given the many various garbs I'm sure one or two scarfs would come lose from time to time. Personally I think I'd have absolutely everything well tucked in just in case wink

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/15/13 12:07 PM

I love to see these new variations on wreckages - I can imagine
how one would go deeper after a kill and see the smashed birds.

That Pfalz looks like it was built new - somehow different, bigger,
more "real-lifeish". And especially on the last pic: much more
beautiful.

The silk scarf is just still short enough to be okay.
The Vintage Aviator guys usually have it fluttering for a yard or two.

Great preview pics, all of them - thanks for sharing, Pol!

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/15/13 02:08 PM

Nice shots!

A silk scarf likely wouldn't get loose because it would be underneath a wool or other heavy fabric scarf that was tied/pinned over it for warmth. A silk scarf doesn't do crap to keep one's neck warm or keep wind from rushing down through one's collar. It was to prevent chafing, which I opine was exaggerated because--based on personal experience--the skin of the neck will get leathery to protect itself from chafing.

I'd love to go back in time and prevent the movie "The Great Waldo Pepper" from ever being made. It's historical poison...

Great shots Pol,thanks, just a question probably i missed the notices but are there gonna be new planes(flyable and non..) in WOFF?
I mean stuff not present yet in OFF/HITR,I think I've read somewhere about night flights as well,so there gonna be Zeppelin bombing?
Or German big bombers? And if so even Home Defense squadron England based?
Thanks....

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/15/13 03:52 PM

As scarfs..it's only on one or two craft as it is possible that a few pilots would have done it so, and as such I think it's reasonable to have those few, but yes we can lose them if they are offensive.

Yes Pete there are several new craft that come with WOFF (shown in the movies and screenshots threads here -some older threads too), and the media page has screenshots too on our website. Sopwith Snipe, Aviatik C.I, Rumpler C.IV , Morane Parasol and a few more.
Also there are brand new models for some, and others all are improved, and all have improve or brand new virtual cockpits etc.

All the final details for what is included in the initial WOFF release will be posted once we are finalised and happy with it all.

Hi Polovski,

lovely shots: cloudscapes, terrain, lighting, all look superb.
Bloody good job.

One question - cloud ceiling: in P3 I don't hit cloud until I'm
at approx 2500m. From my reading it seems that patrols went up
even when the ceiling was 500m (or less).
Will WOFF have lower cloud ceilings than P3 ?

Thanks to all at Obds for the wonderful work.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/16/13 05:16 AM

Cloud height varies according to weather condition, but I agree that cloud ceiling seems a little high. However, with my HPW Skies and Weather mod (tm), wink I have seen clouds as low as 1000 ft. and fog even lower. I would still like to see fog appear more often, but that would involve a more substantial alteration of P3's weather files. I bet any money we will see more fog and lower clouds in WOFF.

Speaking of which, is it just an effect of the damage or is that crashed machine a B. E. 12?

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/19/13 07:36 PM

Thanks guys. As to the clouds, there is far more depth with clouds at various levels in WOFF as you can see from the many screenshots with low clouds, various levels etc.

Yes the crashed machine is a B.E.12.

I'm curious if you were able to make the clouds move, or do they still sit statically in place for 24 hours?

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/19/13 11:41 PM

Can't say I ever flew over one for 24 hours. They are multiple levels and seem to move to me but but WM would have to answer that one.
Posted By: Lothar_of_the_Hill_People

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/20/13 12:08 AM

Clouds only appear to move because you're usually moving. Park the bicycle / exploding tripod, turn on time compression, and let FRAPS take some time-lapse photography.

Chaux at dawn:

Chaux at noon:

Chaux at dusk:

The static clouds were a disappointment given the way the sun, moon, and stars all change over time. But if the clouds can't be made to move too, well I would live to see the bicycle work for the Germans at least!

Well done for hanging around that long I think after 2 hours I'd be in the bar. However what I say still applies as I'm talking about WOFF too. I have no idea on all the changes regarding clouds/weather. Kind of wandering off topic here - maybe need a locked thread for pics posting and a discussion thread again - half the pictures in this thread are not WOFF.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/20/13 01:27 PM

LOL Robert,

BTW re clouds.. one thing missing from most sims - we have changing weather as you fly, different clouds, starts to rain, or clears sunshine etc and this is better in WOFF too.
Posted By: Olham

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/20/13 01:32 PM

I actually never noticed, whether the clouds moved or not - I must have been too busy fighting. biggrin

The different weather- and lighting situations are richer than in any other sim I've seen.
So pleeeeeze, Pol - don't let them talk you into working on different weather -
I would be soooo happy if WOFF would appear rather sooner than later!
Posted By: Polovski

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/20/13 01:42 PM

Yeah same for me Olham I rarely sit and ponder mostly flying and dying. Best to keep moving most of the time in the sim anyway and with the multiple levels of clouds now you see parallax effect on them which gives great impression of movement.

If it's possible to improve any aspect of WOFF we have usually somewhere looked into it. But actually adding things, like all sims, enough time and manpower is the important overriding issue.
Posted By: Hellshade

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 01/20/13 11:52 PM

May I respectfully request that OBD does not delay the release of WOFF in order to add moving clouds into the sim. While it would admittedly add more realism to the world of WOFF, I expect it would be an amazingly small number of people who would actually sit in one place and watch the clouds move. Most people will be too busy flying, fighting and dying to notice such a detail. No disrespect to Lothar, who has added numerous wonderful features to the OFF (P3) experience with his ICE mod.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 02/10/13 12:58 PM

Recently I have been flying another sim a lot, and I like it for what it shows and offers.
No sim is like the other, and so there were many nice things and details to discover.

But now, after flying it for some time, I am missing more and more the profund depth
of the OFF Campaign. It is hard to trace what the difference is (apart from the obvious
much deeper historical knowledge and detail in the OFF Campaign). The OFF-World has
(at least for me) something special, that I can hardly put my finger on, and that I am
missing in the other.

The world I saw in the WOFF previews, with all the great details around the Campaigns,
will be one to immerse into again with glowing hot ears and cheeks. And all delay I hope
is only because they eliminate mistakes, improve FMs and DMs and models, and maybe even
add stuff we will be surprised about.

From my previous experience with watching the OFF development I know, that it is most
intelligent to wait, until the devs say it's ready. I know that no pushing, nagging nor
whining will be able to accelerate the process of building it real good.
But I can understand JFM's emotional reaction only too good myself.
When you are waiting for something really good, the waiting is so much harder.
And you devs cannot expect to keep us drooling permanently over more than 3 years - no
human body can produce so much saliva!
We can only trust them and believe them, that they are not flying the sim too much for
their own fun, and remember us, who are sitting patiently, waiting...

I wrote it several times, and I wrote it to you recently, Pol:
The waiting for "Wings Over Flanders Fields" is my ultimate ZEN lesson.

Aum! ... ... - ... ... Aum! ... ... - ...

Interesting.. those maps tell a story!
But there must be more, surely?

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 03/25/13 09:00 PM

Yes, Trooper, there must be many more OFF Flyers.
My maps can only show those OFFers who came to the forum and thereby "became visible" for me.

There are many many more OFF fliers not in the map or forums!

I guess most people prefer to just go and fly in silence smile

We need some random pics I took recently for the road!

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 03/29/13 11:27 AM

Again the aircraft models appear much larger than they used to - away from any toy effect,
on to real aircraft sizes. Great appearances!
But my knowledge about details of the types is too small - I still don't know, what the new
features are, which Creaghorn had mentioned with the last batch. And I guess here are new
features "hidden" too?
Posted By: Polovski

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 03/29/13 11:58 AM

All the aircraft have been upgraded Olham, so will generally look more realistic and all have completely new cockpits etc. so quite a change. Pity the screenshots are so small here and you cannot zoom in there are details lost. Next time I'll use an external post again just takes more time.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 03/29/13 01:41 PM

Well, if I right-click on the Screenies and then click on "show graphic" (or however
similarly it will be called in English), then I get them a bit larger.
Posted By: elephant

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 03/29/13 01:50 PM

Indeed, with right click and "Open in new Window" you can see them fullsize...
no detail lost, Pol.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 03/30/13 09:50 AM

Oh great thanks guys, think that never used to be the case with embedded ones here?
For Firefox it works too - right click on one, "view image". If in a smaller window or screen once the bigger image appears a little magnifiying glass icon appears - left click again to zoom more.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 03/30/13 11:31 AM

The weathering and detail on the planes is much improved. They have a gritty - being used in war - look instead of a highly polished "glamorized" appearance. I like it alot. Thanks for the random shots Pol!

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 08/20/13 12:13 PM

Go, Albatros, go!
Damn, with that damage he should have the same problem like Boelcke had after his collision?
The damage model and wreckage are looking great!
I guess the wreckage will remain there after the crash, and not disappear after some seconds
like in another sim?

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 08/20/13 12:48 PM

I can see that I am going to need to take some time off when this releases.

The damage model effects look fantastic and even the crashed plane is leaps and bounds above what is in the current version of OFF. The quality of detail in the planes, scenery and terrain really sells the experience. If the AI quality matches the graphics quality, it'll be gold standard for flight sim immersion.

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics Pol.

I guess that all the main rivers along the western front will be there and
serve well as landmarks.

There's my brave BEs. Will they have compasses in WOFF or will I still need to keep that one instrument on the display?
And nice rivers - as has been mentioned by others.
Posted By: Olham

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 08/31/13 09:48 PM

Not only rivers - the landscapes in the last 3 pics is absolutely marvellous!
I thought the landscapes of OFF couldn't get much improved - but now you have
put so much more human order into them - I'd feel time-tunneled back to good
old France! Oh, and the Albatros D.II also looks different now (ailerons, gear).
I'd love to use it against those beautiful Nupes!

Wow! First I thought "poor little Morane" - but then I saw: they rather pepper the Albatros!
Well, I know what I would respond!

The Morane was tricky to fly, said Cecil Lewis - constant elevator control to keep it level.
But it is a craft I will definitely try an early French campaign with.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 09/05/13 11:46 PM

Definitely early campaign for me too.

In RB3D I rarely flew anything later than 1916, especially once Tom Harridine (VonTom) created his wonderful Campaign Manager programme that allowed us to fly all those lovely 'early war' aeroplanes done by JG1Beck, Lowengrin, Charles de Thielt, Hobbes et al. Coupled with Paul Wilsons 'Western Front Patch' added years of joy to that game.

WOFF looks to be a very worthy successor. Am going to have soooooo much flying this sim.

Yes, having only flown two seaters, starting in 1915, I thought I might try a later, single seater, campaign. Having seen the WOFF BE2 with the front gunner, and the other early period aircraft, I just know I am gioing to end up starting as early as possible again.
It's not that later periods and other aircraft don't interest me, but there's just something intriguing about that early period, and WOFF is just making it look that much more interesting.

These really look fantastic Pol! I feel like I'm back watching the release of Western Front Patch about, what, ten years ago now? So nice to see the old crates I fondly remember from back then - planes like the Morane. They look better than I imagined they could. The campaigns in WOFF are really going to be a sight to behold. I think you and the team have finally reached your goal - creating a total experience that accurately simulates life as a pilot on The Western Front from beginning to end.

Tremendous stuff! I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to flying the new sim!

As a flyer, almost exclusively, of British two-seaters I was bound to be pleased with these (although if there are any Salmsons or Breguets to come I'd be happy to see them as well). I like the colours in the BE2 formation, and FE2 shots especially. What really struck me, though, was that last RE8 shot. I have never thought it a pleasing looking aircraft but that shot is almost handsome.

What we CAN'T see in the screens is the new AI you guys have built.
You said in one preview, it could make own decisions.
Maybe it can have moments of less awareness?
That is something I am REALLY very keen on - a real WW1 AI.
What "the other sim" offers there doesn't impress me much.
I hope WOFF will!

Pol;

Such eye candy!!
That number 3 screen cap is a piece of art. I love it. It will be my new wallpaper on my Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Thanks for taking the time to post. Things have been quiet on the forum as of late.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/24/13 10:52 AM

The clouds appear subtle, soft-hazy, like silken vapour - marvellous work!
I always fail at hitting the new features, but here's another guess:
the distant horizonal cloud bands seem to be new?

Thanks guys, Ok some help you need right click on the image and view it, zooms in a bit. On picture 1 and 2;

1 shows one of the new modes we have for labels - dot mode. Simulates being able to spot aircraft at long range - not visible through clouds (all labels are not visibile through clouds, and even fade as they become deeper in cloud).

2 is a new view mode, maybe more on that later ...

Hope that helps smile
Posted By: Olham

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/24/13 04:22 PM

Well, No. 2 reads "Observer View", so I guess the WOFF pilot can switch to that mode
briefly without taking over the whole observer position?
And maybe the AI observer would always look in the direction of the closest E/A -
so this would give the pilot, using that view, a good idea where any attacking or
only threatening E/A are?
Or maybe the flyer can use TrackIR also in "Observer View"?

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/24/13 04:32 PM

A better name would be "Observing" mode.. (in other words nothing to do with a 2 seater observer).

That's not a NEW mode! Everyone on the Forums has been in "Observer mode" for the last 4 years except for the Dev team. Get us into pilot mode! biggrin

Fabulous shots sir. As Olham pointed out, I really do like the clouds low out on the horizon. The scenery is of course a breathtaking leap above what OFF already had and the clouds and sky appear to have been handled with equal care. I can't wait to tangle with the AI and see the new flight models live. The preview movies make them look very graceful and give the strong perception of actual flight.

As always, thank you for the screenies.

WOW AWESOME!! The problem of not being able to spot aircraft at distances more than 1 (one) Km away is something that definitely puzzles me and I hate much in newer sims such as DCS! While this problem isn't so bad in OFF (compared to DCS for example) the fact is that you (almost any human being/pilot) could definitely spot aircraft at longer distances than currently is possible in OFF (and this not to mention other sims) so that "label" mode is definitely VERY, VERY welcomed!
Thanks for this feature! And this from someone that doesn't need glasses in real life.

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 10/27/13 01:40 AM

Huh. And here I thought "dot mode" was just a visual representation of how far in the distance the competition will be behind WOFF. biggrin

All kidding aside (sorta) I think the possibilities of making videos with the Observer Mode sound pretty fabulous. Thank you very much for including this new feature. I look forward to the release of the Official WOFF Features List. I hope it won't be too long now.

UK_W yes same format, although some models are new so template shapes will vary, and many craft have new areas or changes on skins to to improvements. Many 1000s of skins are all revised or even redone.

But also the Pfalz - again it seems to me that the craft looks more
life-like larger. The tailend of the fuselage doesn't appear so thin
anymore; it just looks more real - great job done!

Can't wait to fly against the new AI! So...could you maybe say since you are "close for sure" and you are in beta, which means you know exactly which features will and which features will not be included in WOFF, that unless something truly unexpected happens, WOFF will be released in 6 months or less? Is that a fair statement? No promises of course, since anything is possible, but is that the hope of the Dev team?
Posted By: Polovski

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 11/12/13 08:40 PM

Hi Hellshade if it takes 6 more months from now I really am sure we'll have to get the old revolver out to put us out of our misery! But of course anything is possible. We know the features, but we'll have to wait until finally there to make sure none are removed for various reasons at the last minute etc.

I wish I could send you devs some energy - the final miles are the hardest
for those who run Marathon or the Iron Man.
Although the finish line comes nearer, you must be feeling quite exhausted by now.

The only "energy drink" I can offer you is to say that it looks wonderful.
The stills can only show a small part of your works, but when the invisible stuff
is as well made as the visual, then you have created your masterpiece.
Hang in there, boys!

Re: WOFF: NEW DEV SCREENSHOTS - 11/20/13 08:12 PM

Thanks,

gaw the little green button (off topic but) is from nVidia new tool for recording in-game footage, comes with "nVidia Experience" Shadowplay. Works well so far as it's hardware based but can't hide that button for screenshots by another prog as far as I know - I have not played with it much but records nicely. Any discussion about it please post it in another thread please ta.

yes, exactly that. and depending on rank, repairstatus of other AC etc. you might end up with a new aircraft or with an old one. all mixed in the same flight.

btw. historical pilots are also in the same flight as you are, not seperated in own flights anymore.

At any rate, the entire interface looks very professional and does a great job of setting the mood and keeping immersion high between flights.

Hubba, hubba, hubba!

[picks jaw up off the floor]

WOFF is coming! Merry Christmas to me! wreath

I can't help but post and comment on a couple of screen shots I found over at the new WOFF website. Many of the pictures in the Gallery section are simply breathtaking! Here are a few of my favorites:

Stunningly detailed cockpit.

There are several things I like about this photograph--er screen shot! The trees and fields look absolutely realistic, as if planted by actual human beings. Notice the trees lining the country road and the clump of trees surrounding the farmhouses. Beautiful!

Sorry Olham, I have to apologize for showing one of your beloved Albs in such a state of disrepair. But, in addition to the apparently incredibly detailed new damage model, look at the woodgrain on the fuselage near the tailplane. Wow! Also notice the fence in the background.

My only wish is that I had WOFF in my grubby little hands today, because some white-knuckle dog-fighting would be just the ticket on what has turned out to be a very cold and snowy late fall day.

With the new progressive fire damage, say Goodbye to flying-flamers! Also notice the broken propeller.
