Two Weeks with Samsung Odyssey

Two Weeks with Samsung Odyssey - 06/13/18 05:21 PM

Bought on sale because of favorable recent reports in official BoX forum. I was having trouble identifying targets with Rift. AI moving away would frequently disappear and not be re-identified in time to make appropriate counter move. Spotting AI is much easier using Odyssey. I am no longer forced to doggedly pursue turning AI since I feel reasonably confident I can re-acquire later. For that reason I can make better use of FW190 A5 strong points in 1v1 QM vs Spitfire Vb. No stuttering in low populated missions I’ve tried so far, given gtx 1080Ti, i7 at 3.8 GHz and SS at 1.5. Setup is quick compared to Rift. Tracking is equal to Rift with good room light. Instead of turning on overhead lights I’ve chosen to place a 100 lumen 4-bulb led lamp between keyboard and monitor base. For BoX that setup gives ideal motion tracking without need for any external tracking cameras. Positioning lenses takes more fiddling than Rift. I generally start with solo QM, parked. That gives opportunity to adjust hmd position for best sharpness of cockpit details and external objects. Wheel ipd adjustment seems superior to Rift method. I set mine at the minimum. So far no sense of eye strain that had recently become evident using Rift. Odyssey is physically bulky but feels light in use. Wheel adjustment for head mount is again appreciated here. YouTube videos stating leather facing for Odyssey visor are likely in error. I suspect a vinyl facing on foam base. Does not absorb perspiration but will likely deteriorate over time and also collect oils from skin/hair. Inexpensive balaclavas from Amazon wick moisture away from headset and are easily hand washed. Headphones and mic are at least as good as what the Rift provides. At this point in time, if I were only going to be using vr for BoX, I would not recommend the Rift.

Interesting read, thx. Currently happy @ ultra preset, 40km view and 1.5 SS on Odyssey.

This looks like an improvement over current headsets but it looks like the UK won't be getting it. I wonder why?

Excellent post Frogyy2.
I don't have a VR set up but I really appreciate you sharing your experience and providing a we'll reasoned comparison between the Rift and Odyssey.

Thx for your comment. Am really happy that the BoX team has made effort to support the Odyssey.

Prior to this thread I had never heard of the Odyssey.

Happy with my Rift but competition is good.

The same in the Euro-zone, still think this is an deal to HTC, so they can sell the overpriced HTC VIVEpro.

There are ways to get the Odyssey in Europe, but at higher prices than the US.
Hope Dutch isn't right. I have no want for the Vive Pro at the price they ask. The Vive in general is over priced but the Vive Pro is ridiculous when you see the price point of it's competitors.

I'm not 100% happy with the Rift. Res is still an issue IMO. So the Odyssey has my interest

After reading tips for improving AC spotting for BoX I set landscape filter to “blurred”. I kept draw distance at 40km. Tried these settings using Samsung Odyssey. I have not seen a dramatic change re AC identification but certainly no harm done so I’ve kept the “blurred” landscape filter. Just for curiosity’s sake I switched back to my rift without changing any settings. Settings included SS 2.0 and antialiasing of 2. Counterintuitively Rift performance was clearly inferior. I would have expected that increased FOV and pixel count of the Odyssey would have challenged the CPU/GPU more than the Rift for any given settings. Most noticeable with the Rift is duplication of edges during head movement. This is easily seen on canopy frame and instrument faces. I assume that this is a “latency” effect and becomes more unpleasant as a mission progresses. The “blurred” filter seems to help somewhat for AC spotting in the Rift but I still lose track of AC fairly frequently so the Rift is back on the shelf. I do think that edges of the FOV are noticeably sharper in the Rift. There is a noticeable blurring at field edges with the Odyssey. Nevertheless, AC tracking is so much easier with the Odyssey as to make the trade off easily worthwhile. A minor but unavoidable issue with the Rift is tendency of its cable to twist about itself over time, needing to be untangled every few sessions.
OveralI I am puzzled by the latency occurring with the Rift given it has smaller FOV than the Odyssey.

I had been using an Nvidia driver 388.xx for the previous post. I have now updated to 391.35 and the latency previously experienced in the Rift has disappeared; other issues as per previous post.

I got this velour liner, no more stickiness:

Also because I wear glasses I applied these to the lenses:

Yes, Odyssey is the HMD to get until next gen mobos and GPUs when 4k/8k non-kickstarter headsets become mainstream.
