Re: Battletech released - 04/24/18 09:24 PM

I'm loving it so far. It's a lot like MechCommander if you played that, but with more going on due to managing your merc group. So far I'm very impressed with everything but the load times.
Posted By: Master

Re: Battletech released - 04/24/18 11:16 PM

The load times dont matter to me. But I'm taking issue with the sequence of play where they allow you to move, face and fire all in one mech turn. I wish they would have done the move and face turned based and then once everyone moved and faced then all mech fire at once.

Re: Battletech released - 04/25/18 04:48 AM

A coordinated shot would be cool, but the effect with the turns is close I guess. I'm loving the addition of precision shots for calling shots. I haven't tried that on a downed enemy yet to see if the effect is compounded. I see more and more details and improvements over the beta, I'm absolutely loving this thing. I was afraid there wouldn't be many maps, but I haven't had one repeat yet. The mission types are a little repetitive, but I assume these early campaign missions are more or less training. It engages well from the start. I've pieced together some new mechs already and customized most of the ones I had to begin with.

Re: Battletech released - 04/25/18 07:14 AM

Do you remember if they said anything about Clans? One thing I loved about MC was getting that MadCat early in the game and using it on each and every mission!! Not true to the board game rules (or would be very difficult!!) but this was before I discovered the board game so loved the cool factor!

Re: Battletech released - 04/25/18 01:07 PM

The current timeline is earlier on than that. They say something in their FAQ that down the road they could go into later, but time passes in the game already. When you travel, weeks can go by, or you may choose to wait a few days for mech repairs and pilots to get healed up.
After the mess MWO became after the clan invasion, I’m enjoying just. being all Inner Sphere. Having your character born potentially a clanner that wound up back here is part of the game. I went that route just in case. LOL

From the FAQ. Keep in mind these answers are 3 years old now, so it could change
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/webeharebrained/battletech/faqs

3025 is before the Clan invasion. Will there be Clans in the game?
There are no Clan ‘Mechs in the game yet but the BattleTech universe spans hundreds of years and in success, we plan to include them in later installments.

Are you going to advance the timeline during the game to reach the 4th Succession War?
No. Our game will advance time in your merc career but not long enough to reach the 4th Succession War.

Re: Battletech released - 04/25/18 06:47 PM

Thanks! I do enjoy the Inner Sphere pre-Clan era and prefer to start my games there but I do look forward to some Clan goodies.

Anyone know if there's a manual for this game? Or is there a built-in tutorial? Purposely did not play much of the beta so as not to ruin this experience, but I was hoping to get a manual to explain the mechanics and icons and stuff. I just installed my copy off GoG (no DRM? Wow!) but there doesn't seem to be a manual anywhere.

Re: Battletech released - 04/25/18 06:55 PM

It's very intuitive and you're guided through. The ship side business is covered by the crew members that explain how to do everything with finances, contracts, mech bay upgrades and repairs. It's extremely well done and easy to pick up. Combat isn't hard to pick up at all and can be done with mouse only if you want.
The experience of the developers really shows in this game.

MW5 is being done by the MWO guys. So I wouldnt hold your breath...

Re: Battletech released - 04/26/18 02:20 AM

Give me this same game but piloting the mech and issuing orders and I'll be perfectly happy.
Posted By: Master

Re: Battletech released - 04/26/18 11:07 PM

I was thinking that myself. Same exact mercenaries system with the random map / missions but make it first person with 4 (or more) person coop. It's be like the old chrome hounds game but so much better.

Re: Battletech released - 04/27/18 12:29 AM

I miss the Neroimus War. All games can learn from CH's MP.
I'd take CH, just updated on pc, with first person, over just about any game.

Re: Battletech released - 04/27/18 06:54 AM

Basically what we want is a combination of Mechcommander and MechWarrior....
One person as the commander seeing the overall situation giving orders to 1-4 pilot players in mechs...

Some of the guys who did chrome hounds are doing a new mech game called MAV. Its not very good yet though but I havent played it in over a year. Might be worth checking out. They used to have a free to play demo.

Yeah, I’ve followed that for many years but haven’t bought in. Are they the devs or fans? The war was what made that game so great, and the garage.

Re: Battletech released - 04/29/18 01:33 AM

Hadn't played anything Mech since MechWarrior 3.

Don't know squat, enjoying hunting down info and, dying a LOT.

Re: Battletech released - 04/29/18 02:18 AM

game is outstanding so far. running two shadowhawks, wolverine, vindicator unless escort and i'll swap one out for a firestarter

best tip I can offer so far: be sure you are applying all of your pilot XP in between drops. a couple of points of gunnery make a HUGE difference. the PPC vindicator is a long range surgeon when it comes to dismembering enemy mechs

also, most of the mechs i have seen are NOT stock with full armor. strip off a heat sink or jump jet to save tonnage and boost that armor.
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 04/29/18 03:52 AM

Lots of garage tome fun to be had.
An old school, straight forward, awesome game, not dependent on weird game play mechanics.
I haven’t been this hooked on a TBS game since 1989 playing the same thing on an Amiga with hex maps.

Re: Battletech released - 04/30/18 02:37 AM

Brutal! Just barely survived one of the story missions. Lost 3 out of 4 mechs, best pilot killed, last one made a rush to the objective ( stepped on a Panther's head on the way ) and somehow pulled it off.

payout was good but other 2 pilots are recuperating in the medical bay for the next 92 days... time to hire some scrubs to fill in on some milk run missions for a while. probably take half that long to get my shadow hawk, vindicator, and wolverine get put back together.

what a cool game. i'm totally sucked in at this point.

Re: Battletech released - 04/30/18 03:30 AM

Very cool.

I just now FINALLY finished that first story mission, the derelict ship. Lots of repairs and two pilots out of action for a few weeks but we staggered into that derelict with 4 mechs!
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 04/30/18 03:57 AM

I’ve held off on te second mission, the first they call you in for until I could get my pilots leveled up some. The skills really make a huge difference.
I ran around on my own looking in new regions finding some good contracts. Can’t wait to get into the heavies and assaults!
Very fresh game, combat is so different from MWO.

Re: Battletech released - 04/30/18 02:59 PM

Might want to put some spoiler tags there guys! smile

I cheat in this game. A lot. If I don't like the outcome, I re-do the mission. I don't like having guys injured or mechs lost. Reload savepoint. Having said that, it would be cool to play this game in Ironman mode with only one savepoint allowed and auto-saves every turn.
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 04/30/18 05:46 PM

I've done it too, once because I lost a pilot and wasn't going to have it and another time just to replay a good mission.
I'm not above it! I've got a time investment in these pilots to protect. LOL I'll play FTL if I want perma-death.

Re: Battletech released - 05/01/18 07:02 AM

Interesting little tidbit I discovered last night. I was trying to do a mission that had my forces outnumbered and although I "won" the mission, I lost a mech and had two pilots on 2 hits out of 4 so I replayed it and let the days pass and re-did the mission with tougher mechs thinking it'll be easier considering the forces I went up against --- mostly light mechs, Commandos, Firestarters, Jenners. With my heavier lance, I was surprised to face down 2 laser Hunchbacks, an AC/20 Hunchback, and I think a Kintaro? I was outgunned! Re-did the mission again with one mech different but with my other mech on a different loadout and to my suprise, I was up against only a couple of light mechs and vehicles which made the mission a cake walk! Considering the mission rewards were the same in terms of C-Bills, I wasn't going to complain!

I'm not sure what's going on exactly. At first, I thought the game would scale the OpFor to roughly match what the player would field, but this doesn't seem to be the case? Maybe the game then tones down the difficulty level if it sees the player struggling?
Posted By: Nixer

Re: Battletech released - 05/01/18 09:43 AM

I had a good paying "defend this place" mission where the bad guys just milled around out of range and never fired a shot!
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/01/18 11:22 AM

I need a couple of things explaining....

Is it better to be in forests and stationary?
What bonuses/penalties does being stationary give you? Moving about gives penalties to those who shoot at you but I'm not sure about penalties to my own shooting modifiers for moving.
Seems like the amount of forests do not block LOS no matter how thick it is, unlike on tabletop rules?

I liked figuring out how/where to move or not move or jump on the tabletop game so that I ended up with a lower to-hit target number than my opponent. Or stopping just beyond his medium range for a more difficult time to hit. This game seems to take a bit of liberties with the rules and I'm not very competent at grasping which is which.

Re: Battletech released - 05/01/18 04:17 PM

The two missions I re-ran earlier changed one of the mechs, a firestarter became yet another jenner or something like that. Yesterday I replayed the second story mission and nothing changed. I’m guessing that the missions have a set tonnage % to match what you bring, or maybe it’s strictly associated with the difficulty rating? Could be ranndom mechs that fit in that weight limit.

I’m curious too, about benefits of being in forest or whatever, not moving, and getting a bonus. I know there is a skill that gives you a passive ability if stationary, but otherwise, is it necessary to move before attacking to get a defense bonus or do you get one for being hard to see due to being still?
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/01/18 07:12 PM

I think I played the derelict jumpship mission a few times and always had the same enemy troops so I was under the impression that the OpFor composition was static, but then maybe this is only the case for story missions and random contract missions can be more varied in OpFor composition?

Mechforce!! I remember it well! It's that game that got me so interested in this one when it was announced - I hoped it would be a spiritual successor. So far, I'd have to say that it is too.
I even used my old Mechforce character name for this one!

It also gives me a "Mech Commander" feel to even though it's not an RTS. I enjoyed that one quite a bit too.

Of course, it's release times with my absolute busiest time of year, so I haven't had much playing time on it. A few more weeks....

That's my impression. I think the story missions are "seeded" with certain mechs they want you to have access to, or at least start building up parts for. Go for the legs! I got a Jager out of one of those.

That's it! IIRC it was on 3 floppies, the game, a pilot and mech garage and a map maker. My friends and I spent MANY nights playing that entirely too much my freshman year in college.

Same here - I've even preserved my old Amiga digitally and fire it up on an emulator every so often. Mechforce isn't too stable on it unfortunately!

Re: Battletech released - 05/01/18 11:24 PM

Yeah, got a Jaeger but the arms/side torsos are so weak so I've re-fitted it with just AC/5s and LLasers, HS, and more armor.

Re: Battletech released - 05/02/18 02:23 AM

Got mine decked out with 2 AC5’s, 4 ML, 2 SL (IIRC, but no need, might ditch for another JJ), couple jump jets, heat sinks and just about max armor.
One tough SOB, actually handles heat well being longer distance.

The missions are randomly generated when you start them. So redoing missions from the drop ship mech selection screen will result in different missions each time (except for story missions.) but if you save as soon as you are on the ground you can reload the same mission.

Forests give you 25% cover which is damage reduction 25%. The bulwark skill gives you 50% reduction but only on turns where you dont move. For forests you get it for just being in the hex of trees.

So if you have bulwark and move into a tree hex you get 25% reduction for the turn you moved. If you stay put you then get the 50% from bulwark. The two bonuses dont stack.

Bulwark is a brace bonus where you bunker down in your hex behind something (its abstract) where the forest hex bonus of actual cover/visibility bonus. But they still dont stack.

Another bonus you can get is moving your mech so that the line of sight line becomes dotted. This gives you partial cover from terrain and dramatically decreases their hit percentage.

BATTLETECH: What's Next?
MAY 2 - HAREBRAINED SCHEMES
First of all, to our Backers and new players alike - thank you for your incredible outpouring of love and support last week following the launch of BATTLETECH, and for sharing so many of your amazing game experiences with us. As a small developer, these stories mean the world to us. It's why we do this.

From the heartfelt reactions of our Backers, to the kind words from reviewers, to the epic marathons on YouTube, to the hysterical reactions on Twitch, to the goofy memes floating through social media, this week has been a whirlwind and we are thrilled to be on this ride with you.

Extra kind words and fun clip links:
Waypoint[waypoint.vice.com]
Polygon[www.polygon.com]
GameWatcher[www.gamewatcher.com]
Twitch Clip 1[clips.twitch.tv]
Twitch Clip 2[clips.twitch.tv]
Twitch Clip 3[clips.twitch.tv]
We could easily fill this entire post and more just rounding up press and fan reactions to the game - but we'd rather talk about what's next. From the start of this project, we've viewed launch not as the end of the road, but as the birth of a living product. Over the course of development, you might recall that we often answered speculative questions about post-launch features or content with, "in success, all things are possible."

Well - thanks to you, this is the success we hoped for. And many things are now possible! We're working with Paradox on a roadmap for the next year of BATTLETECH development. This will include regular bugfixing, quality-of-life improvements, and free Updates adding new features to the game. Here's a look at the next few months of that roadmap.

****BATTLETECH Post-Launch Roadmap****

1. Compatibility / Performance Investigations
Our launch last week wasn't perfect. A subset of players are experiencing hardware/system compatibility and performance issues that our team is working hard to investigate. Solutions for critical issues are always our top priority, and will be released as soon as they're available and tested. Typically, we will release patches to our public_beta branch on Steam for a few days for testing before we push them to the default branch.

On that note - last Friday we released our first patch to the public_beta branch for testing. Today, that 1.0.1 Patch went live - you can read the full changelog here. We expect to release more patches to public_beta in the coming days and weeks.

2. General Bugfix (Late May)
We expect to release at least one general bugfix/improvements patch later in May.

3. Localization (French, German, Russian) and Linux support
These are both Kickstarter commitments and high priorities for our post-launch roadmap. (Along with a couple other Kickstarter commitments that didn't make it in for launch.) We don't have a more precise ETA yet for these items but will update you as soon as we do.

4. Update #1: Customization & Player Options (June/July)
We're already beginning work on our first larger free Update to BATTLETECH. This Update is all about customization and reacting to common pieces of feedback that we've received from you on the game. Here's a list of items we're currently looking at for Update 1 this summer:
Accelerated combat options - We're working on options for players who would like to accelerate the pace of combat missions.

MechWarrior customization - We know that many players would like to change the appearance, callsign, name, and voice of all their MechWarriors, not just their Commander. This didn't make it in for launch but we'll be adding it in Update 1.

Granular difficulty settings - A set of discrete options for players to customize the challenge level of the game in different areas.

MechLab / Store / Salvage quality-of-life improvements - Interface additions to reduce friction when buying and salvaging new items.

Tutorial-skip option - Allowing players who have already played the prologue missions to skip those missions when starting a new campaign, and get right to the Leopard.

Addressing difficulty spikes - We'll be working on smoothing out some issues with unexpectedly hard (or easy) content. Not to remove all difficulty variance, but to address clear outliers.

Live-streaming quality-of-life improvements - Audio persisting when alt-tabbed, for example.
It's important to note that the exact contents of Update 1 may shift during development. Please consider these general directions and priorities. We'll post a more detailed and updated list of what's in the Update closer to its release.

5. More BATTLETECH!
The above is just the beginning! We'll be continuing with more free Updates after Update 1, and we'd also love to release a larger paid content Expansion or two - but right now we're staying focused on bugfixes and immediate reactions to launch feedback. With your support, we could not be more excited to continue making BATTLETECH even bigger and better.

Thank you,
HBS

Re: Battletech released - 05/06/18 12:05 AM

I'm wondering if going with a "always go high on salvage and low on cash" bid negotiation tactic makes sense. if you have at least 3 "select" salvage slots you are nearly guaranteed a new mech on the drop and even the cheap ones will usually scrap out for at least 200k

certainly pays off when a good mech drops on the other team and you take it out
Posted By: Nixer

Re: Battletech released - 05/06/18 02:13 AM

Once you have a mega-pile of mech carcasses I think it's smarter to take salvage. A freakin locust is worth half a decent mission...

So... I guess it depends on the players current situation.
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 05/06/18 02:18 AM

I usually do the 2 pick of salvage with top bucks, screw the rep for now. After building up a big rack of partial mechs, something gets completed almost every mission. I just keep saving them until I need to sell. I keep 2 million emergency fund and above that goes towards ship upgrades and ++ or better weapons or perk bonus equipment.
With gunnery maxed or close on my pilots, I’m getting more leg shots for good salvage.

Re: Battletech released - 05/06/18 03:16 PM

first mission of the day, eliminate 2 pirate lances on New Vandenburg

engage first medium lance but get ambushed by light lance on the right flank

my best pilot Behemoth in her Dragon moves to the edge of the forest to open up on a Wolverine, but takes critical hit from a Panther's PPC and SRM on the right arm

Behemoth "My internals are taking a beating"

Me ( giggling ) "That's what she said"

Re: Battletech released - 05/06/18 04:41 PM

LOL
She’s a benched slacker in my game!
There are some friggin hard missions at the same rating as a quick and done easier one. The difficulty ratings aren’t a perfect system yet. Keeps you on your toes though, so I’m not complaining.
Posted By: Clydewinder

Re: Battletech released - 05/06/18 08:10 PM

i like the fact that the difficulty rating is an estimate by your Contract guy rather than an all-knowing force assessment. keeps it interesting. also makes for a pleasant surprise once in a while when you drop a lance loaded for bear but it turns out you can do a smash & grab and extract without getting beat up.

my only problem with Battletech at this point is the amount of housework that's not getting done.

Ditto.

The map does open up as you progress, giving you access to different houses to work for and improve your reputation. I travel around looking for new areas in the open zones rather than wait for paid travel contracts. Travel expense is pretty minor at this point.
They do seem to have plans for dlc expansions, so I doubt this is done developing.

Re: Battletech released - 05/07/18 04:13 PM

I don't go for mechs very much as more mechs on standby just increases my overhead costs. I still do go for salvage though and just get weapons instead. I'm getting more and more fond of the PPC and I'm just waiting to get a Hunchback to try out my other favorite - the AC/20!

I only keep one set of mechs at the ready even though I've got mech bay 2 opened up. Don't forget you can keep entire completed mechs in storage and they cost you nothing. Sell at your leisure...best to buy/sell when you've built up reputation with the region.

Very cool.

A big negative, in my humble opinion, is the fact you can't "practice" with your campaign lance in the other single player part of the game.

Shouldn't be too hard for the devs to make that happen I hope.

Just import your lance to "fight" against "XYZ". Great training IMO and would add a lot to the game, again, in my opinion.

Re: Battletech released - 05/08/18 08:31 PM

It was funny though, because we each chose the exact same lance type before the skirmish w/o knowing it.

Re: Battletech released - 05/09/18 11:06 PM

Sweet! I'm still looking for the bigger mechs, but slowly filling out with heavies. Just today found my first Catapult since that story mission. I want a couple of those, then of course I'm searching out some Stalkers and Atlas.
The game has a good pace, keeping the mechs coming based on your missions and all, but I'm SICK of Shadowhawks, Vindicators and Panthers. Getting close to having the ship finished, but I'm resisting the 3rd bay just because I don't need it.
Posted By: Clydewinder

Re: Battletech released - 05/10/18 12:13 AM

i was running 2 Orions, Dragon, and a Shadowhawk with SRMs and a LLAS - the shadowhawk was still very useful because of the speed and it could hit with a targeted strike to soften up or destroy a leg upon first contact. Not sure what mechs i'm going to run now with the 2 assaults available. The dragon's speed and armor combo made it a lifesaver more than once.

Have not purchased the 3rd mech bay either. I don't have the second one full and there are a bunch of mechs that i havent used at all for a while. the med bay and repair bay upgrades are totally worth it tho

Re: Battletech released - 05/10/18 04:19 PM

Just finished the ammo story mission and I'm a bit torn with this game. On one hand, it's fun, on the other, it's deviated from Classic BattleTech a bit but enough to be confusing.

Some minor gripes:
  • Weapon tonnage is not readily visible, I need to hover my mouse over the module to find out the tonnage to see if I can swap it for a different weapon
  • Damage is.... different. An AC/20 does 100 damage when I'm used to thinking 20. A Large Laser does 50
  • No ejections. In MechCommander, it was satisfying to see an enemy pilot eject and it was grim when you do NOT see him eject
  • Moving between areas of the dropship is inconvenient. I need to hover my mouse over something, that bring up sub-sections I can go to, but if I take too long or miss my target, those pop-ups disappear and I have to hover over it again. I just want to see my mechs really quickly, I don't want to jump through two scenes to get to it!
  • A lot of the interface could use some work, such as seeing the mech loadout on-the-fly
  • I'd like to have the ability to take back my move. A lot of times I accidentally move to a location that does not have LOS or only has indirect LOS capability, but the location right next to it was what I wanted
  • What is a mech's walk/run/jump stats? Heat stats?

I'm sure there are a few more. Just coming from the tabletop game, I feel uncomfortable not knowing how certain things affect the to-hit rolls.
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 05/10/18 05:08 PM

There are ejections, it's not obvious though. It's an icon on the lower left corner as an option to save your pilot and the mech will be up for repair in the bay.
I've yet to try it, but it's there.
Jingles did it at 27:45 here. Spoilers about a story mission, so if you don't want to see it, skip to it.

For me, I'd also like the ship navigation to just have everything listed flat out instead of sliding to the side to go to somewhere. Or even just send you directly to the mech bay and make the dialogue some other option after you're in there.
The most irritating thing, other than load times, is the drag and drop setting up your mech. I know the pointer just needs to be inside the box, but in my mind it isn't the position of the pointer as much as it's the position of the component. It needs to be more intuitive as far as making the drop easier.

I know we're getting more options for speeding the game up, but after turning all options and cameras off, I'm pretty happy. I still have auto select when not in combat checked, but the rest is off and it's a lot nicer.

Also wish to have some sort of indicator if the guys have new dialog options instead of having to check them after each mission.

Re: Battletech released - 05/10/18 08:36 PM

Spoiler question!!!!

In the missin where Victoria is piloting a CAT, have you guys managed to salvage it? Best I could do was 1/3 of that mech and I don't think I will come across more CATs in the future, so replaying the mission now to see if I can score a lucky crit or something.
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 05/10/18 10:00 PM

I don’t remember getting salvage, just the big payday. I’ve only done a couple of story missions beyond that one I think.
I did come across a K2 Catapult at Zathras??? I made the trip out there, the western most system and have been working my way back.
I did get 2 parts of it though. I saved it for last so I’d have plenty of time and morale for called shots and took his legs out. Still searching for more parts though.
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/11/18 12:58 AM

Seems like it's impossible to salvage an entire mech, unless it's a headshot. I managed to take both legs out with all torsos intact and all I got was 2 parts. I should've stuck with that. Currently replaying the mission over and over and trying out new tactics.
Posted By: Nixer

Re: Battletech released - 05/12/18 01:32 AM

I guess the tactic is kill all the trash while saving all your morale stuff and then head shot today's prizewinner.

I still only have medium mechs so I am doing something wrong.

Not cheating lately though, almost tempted to restart knowing what I know now.

Re: Battletech released - 05/12/18 01:37 AM

Just navigate around yourself, each system shows an estimated difficulty level.
I’ve yet to find a 4 star system, but that’s probably due to putting off the story a while. The next zones probably have them when they unlock.

I managed to salvage the QuickDraw in the Argo mission - but since that is a storyline mission, I’m wondering if that is scripted. Did everyone salvage that whole mech in that mission?

Interesting. I got three pieces of it in salvage so I snapped it up. Afterwards I wondered if it Was scripted to fall to me so I wasted the priority picks on it, but it looks like I played it right.

Re: Battletech released - 05/12/18 03:55 PM

i did run into one system where the store had Orion-K parts for sale at 900k each- basically for around 3 mil you can take a new 75 tonner home, ready to drop. Another was selling complete mechs, possibly Enforcers and Wolverines? With pilot injuries, it is possible to take a mech without destroying any components but it gets more difficult to do as the game progresses, as the enemy pilots become tougher and more resistant to injury incapacitation

Re: Battletech released - 05/12/18 03:57 PM

Catapult!! Whoohoo!!

[Linked Image]

I had managed to take out a leg earlier so she was limping but more importantly, the pilot had 1 point of damage. I then took out a side torso, so another 1 point damage, and melee'd her to knock her down, so another 1 damage. She then turned her back on my mechs and again got melee'd, tumbled over, and knocked the pilot out. I was expecting only 2 out of 3 sections of the Catapult but I was willing to accept it as I was getting tired of replaying the mission, so I was very pleased that I got 3 sections!

Re: Battletech released - 05/12/18 11:45 PM

If you guys find your game load times slowing down dramatically, even crashing, it may help to delete old game saves from the menu. If you have steam backup disabled, you might be able to do it directly from the save folder.
I had around 130 saves and eventually the game crashed and even wanted to reinstall. Not sure if all of that is related or not, but ditching all but the last 10 saves made a huge difference in my load times. Even going through the list deleting the saves one by one the difference in deleting each file sped up dramatically.
IIRC Skyrim had a similar problem at one point, but that might have just been on console.

Thank God for the ability to save missions!! biggrin Took a lot of work and RNG luck! As with the Catapult, I got this by taking out the pilot via pilot injuries. What's interesting here was that the Atlas actually only had the CT left --- I took out a leg, both side torsos, and an ammo explosion from one of the torsos to take out the Atlas pilot --- so I was surprised to see all three parts available for salvage. As you can see, I only had 2 priority slots so a lot of times, I'd pick the two AS7-D partials and it'll give me one or two of the other mech partials and some weapons for the remaining salvage. I tried picking one AS7-D part and one STK-3F part and the RNG decided to give me the other two AS7-D parts! Success!!

Damn! Two tons of AC/20 ammo is only good for 10 shots? Wow, better make those count!

Re: Battletech released - 05/14/18 12:05 AM

Yeah, that one. I hate the freakin desert.

I blew one crate and killed two turrets. I blew the second one trying to kill that damn dragon that I ended up DFA' ing.

All in all, I only played it once and won so I guess I should be happy.

Up until that mission I had pretty much been playing, bait em to me on high ground and, then kill them all.

That one deteriorated into "run for our lives", taking potshots when heat allowed. Just had another side mission where we had had run like hell, cooling off as we ran.

Then... set up on some high ground and pop em.

Re: Battletech released - 05/14/18 12:11 AM

Cool Atlas.

I don't save missions in progress. Am playing it real now.

IF I totally am in over my head, read it wrong etc, I might, in the future, restart.

Kinda fun this way...

I do miss all those cool weapons I lost though. Haven't lost a single trooper...yet.

Re: Battletech released - 05/14/18 12:16 AM

In one of my playthroughs, I did get the Atlas but lost a pilot. Nope. Re-do.

If I did play it in an "Ironman" mode, I'd be in so much trouble smile I console myself with the fact that the tabletop rules are so much more clearer than this game's implementation so while I can make better tactical moves and decisions in the tabletop game, I'll resort to save-loading the PC version as I learn the modified rules.

and I only have that Dragon as my singular heavy! I am much more cautious now that I am playing without extra saves.

Is that what "ironman" mode is?

I had no pre-conceived notions about lore, history, other games etc.

I do love watching mechs go "pop" from a well placed PPC/LRM called shot! lawncareby20mm

Re: Battletech released - 05/14/18 01:40 AM

On that crate mission, I had all heavies, 2 LRM and ml’s, 2 ac20’s and ml’s. Moved to the right and used the large rock for cover. Soften up with LRM’s, blow them away with the brawlers. The ac20 builds can one shot the lights. Screw those trucks. LOL

Got me a catapult k2 now! Can’t wait for an atlas and stalker.

Iron Man mode means once someone dies etc, that’s it. No saves to fall back to, a straight through game as it plays out.
If your own character dies, does the game end I wonder?

Yes, "Ironman" mode is playing with a single save point and no reloads. Save when you exit the game, load that save when you start the game, and no backsies smile I don't think BattleTech has it explicitly but you can obviously play in this way. Other games have it.

I do love PPCs and I'm somewhat disappointed by LRMs. I could've sworn they were more deadly/painful in the tabletop version. Might need to get a Catapult with dual LRM20s to find out! biggrin

So in TT LRM's are grouped into 5 pt clusters and allocated that way. The table for them spreads them out a little less then the PC version does as well.

In TT you made your money with LRM's in two ways, cumulative damage requiring piloting rolls to avoid falling (which could lead to a disabled pilot or mech from one failed roll), and from having a support lance drop a ton of missiles. 4-8 LRM15/20's worked out to a pretty fearsome concentration of damage.

I was surprised to see the Awesome in the field; there was a Zeus and a Battlemaster there too and I wanted both the Zeus and the Battlemaster but when the Awesome appeared, I made quick work of the first two and concentrated on the Awesome. I had an Atlas with an AC/20, a SRM, and an LRM setup (among other weapons) so one salvo of that was enough to fill the stability bar of the Awesome. Another mech with some SRMs/LRMs would then step in afterwards and finish the "push" needed to topple the mech over. Two head hits (from missiles) and two knockdowns and I had an intact Awesome for salvage!

I just might build a couple of mechs with the idea of them being salvage-oriented attacks in order to expand my roster. biggrin

Re: Battletech released - 05/15/18 12:08 PM

Re: Battletech released - 05/15/18 01:50 PM

Yeah, I thought I'd get to keep all of them, struggled to keep that other mech intact, was it a Griffin? Annoyed I didn't get all of them, or at least be able to pick! I did strip the HS off the Highlander and put it in the Awesome!

This is really getting out of hand now wink Got a mission to take out an unknown heavy mech, so I purposefully took the minimum cash payout to get 3 priority slots for salvage.

[Linked Image]

Not really a fan of the Crab for TT, I guess I just didn't like the model? But it's mine anyway. Same deal. AC/20 and SRM/LRM from the Atlast, if all connects, that's enough to fill the stability bar. A nudge from either the Awesome or Catapult with a PPC shot or the SRM/LRM on the Highlander and it topples over. Wait for it to get up, eat some damage, then tip it over again. The third salvo got a head hit too, so as soon as he goes over, pilot is out of action and full salvage is mine! biggrin

Wanted to get that second Catapult just for spares, but to be fair the Argo is filling up quite fast!

Learned two things today.

Yes, I can die, but I don't. Just spent 82 days in the med bay.

Also you can play while your character is in a med bay.

Lost one of my in training back-up guys today too. He was getting pretty skilled. All my main guys are straight 10's across the board now. It's irritating that Darius keeps reminding me to go to barracks and direct training when there is nothing to train!

Yes, I hope they patch that out. My guys are up too, just one rookie on backup I can’t ever bring myself to take out, so he doesn’t have anything to spend yet. They need to shut that off at all 10.’s

Re: Battletech released - 05/19/18 01:03 PM

in a stand-up fight i'm running the three ON1-Ks with the highlander ( stock loadout ). 2 orions with ac10 and LRM, the 3rd with AC20 and SRM for up close & personal use.

for a defensive mission i'll put one or both Battlemasters in the mix, just to have some more armor points on the board

for any mission where i need to move fast, usually HGN, ON1K, Jagermech with 2xLRM15, and then either Dragon, Black Knight, or Cat K2. Still like the Dragon for the speed, it's a great melee/stomper for finishing off legged enemy mechs

Re: Battletech released - 05/19/18 02:16 PM

Some more for the gripe list:

  • When buying stuff, it would be great to see how many I have in my inventory so that I know if I'd want to pick up a few extra or not. Currently have to switch to the SELL section to check
  • I'd like to have the ability to move mechs to different mech bays just to get some order. My current layout has gaps in it now and I still can't move mechs to fill those gaps. I suspect I can store a mech then un-store it into a slot I want but it seems like a lot of effort for such a simple thing to do
  • When looking at my stored components and mechs, have it occupy the whole screen. Such a waste of real estate
  • I'd like to be able to choose which mech appears behind Yang at default when you enter the mech bay
  • Being able to launch more than one lance!!

As I get to the later parts of the game, my issue is no longer mech repair but rather pilot injury. It seems like I get head hits pretty regularly and coupled with being knocked over, some of my pilots end the mission with 1-2 points of injury. On some difficult missions, more. Luckily, most of them have 4-5 hit points now, but the game seems to have compensated by dishing out more. Getting a head hit after an SRM 4 attack? Really?

I’d like to have better access to info about markets. I bought some double heat sinks somewhere but I need more! I’d like to know all of the cockpit equipment for bonuses.
Wouldn’t mind a little heat bar on the squad icons, like the health bar. It would be nice to set up lances in the Bay now that I’ve got all three set up. Dragging and dropping to reorder them would be nice just for OCD purposes. LOL

Re: Battletech released - 05/19/18 03:22 PM

I am wondering if heat is tracked on the vehicles. Seems like those Shreck PPC tanks can rip off multiple PPC shots per turn without cooling down

Re: Battletech released - 05/19/18 03:52 PM

2 Black Knights, a Highlander and a Catapult C2 make up my lance to date, but I just got a Battlemaster, so that will likely take the spot of a BK.
I did spot a Stalker and an PPC Awesome, but the mission was a b!tch and I had to rerun it, which changed the assaults we were against to the BM and I forget the other.
I've run across some high dollar/high salvage missions, but dammit I HATE convoy escorting! I'm skipping those for now.

You sure you bought them? I got mine from my salvaged SLDF mech.

Re: Battletech released - 05/20/18 05:04 PM

Maybe so?
King Crab, that’s what the other was on the one on the mission I got the Battlemmaster on. I really wanted the KC, but I was able to complete the BM so I went with it. I wish we could replay some of these missions, other than loading an earlier save, but I guess that would ruin the gameplay.
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/20/18 06:02 PM

By the time I saw the KC, I had a method of getting full mech salvage - just tip them over with enough stability damage!! The missiles themselves don't do enough bulk damage to really take out the mech but do pack enough of a punch so that it keels over every turn. With a lucky head hit or two, or maybe a destroyed side torso, you'll only need two turns' worth of attacks to take it out and get the full mech as salvage.

It's gotten to the point now that I always bargain for 3 salvage slots. Even if I don't get any interesting mechs in the mission (I thought there was supposed to be a Raven somewher?), I'd still get interesting weapons or components that I can salvage.

Getting ready for the last fight now. I thought the campaign would be longer, but then again, I usually go to the story missions as soon as they pop up. I'm at Week 70 Day 1 now.

Re: Battletech released - 05/20/18 10:28 PM

Finished the campaign and it's awesome! Interesting to be fighting over a small, insignificant area of space, not like the vast realms of Davion or Steiner territory in the other games. I would love to have campaign DLCs for this game where I can continue on, and go do a new storyline with my guys. None of them are maxxed out and my character just hit 10 Piloting just before the last mission, but that's it.

Some additions to my stable but all of this is rendered annoying because of the lack of ability to move mech around different bays.

It was so cool to finally get a Catapult with LRMs but it can only fit LRM 15s and I didn't have good enough LRM 20s to put into it plus I didn't want to lose armor and by this point, I had bigger, badder mechs that could mount LRM 20s and could take more punishment, so the CPLT-C1 never really saw much battle. The BattleMaster became part of my regular lance -- my Atlas, the Highlander, the BattleMaster, then the King Crab. The BattleMaster essentially became the heavy scout mech! smile

A few spoilers:

My lance on the final mission. By this point, my Atlas or King Crab could well core out an enemy mech -- just precision strike the CT and if it's not taken out, the enemy mech would be so unstable that a shot from an SRM 6 could topple it, after that, called shots to CT and it's dead. The final mission and the showdown between Kamea and Victoria were not much of a challenge at all; I could take out a mech or two each turn and in the end, I was playing with Victoria as I thought I could salvage what appeared to be a SLDF King Crab that she was piloting. frown No such luck.

[Linked Image]

A gift for my services biggrin So much for not getting that SLDF King Crab! Interesting how inefficient it is even with dual HS, the ERLLs pack that much heat? Doesn't seem to tally with what I know of the TT version, but I guess this has something to do with how the game version calculates heat and such. I'm still wanting a simple readout of a mech's W/R/J stats as well as heat generated and dissipation ability per turn. My boys and I may just revisit our merc campaign one of these days!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Interestingly enough, the game continues on after the end of the campaign. I might explore this a little bit and see if I can max out my guys and train up some newbies as well. For some reason, I've not connected to my pilots as much as I did back in MechCommander games, maybe because I found the skill progression system rather confusing, like I would give one pilot a -1 recoil penalty upgrade but I won't remember which one it is and probably put that pilot on a laser boat. Same thing for giving someone a +15 heat threshold, then put that pilot in an AC20 mech frown I've got the urge now to fire up MechCommander and re-live the old games to see if I'm just remembering them through rose-tinted glasses.

Week 70?! I hink I’m 3 years in at least. LOL
I like seeing the planets, so it’s slowed me down getting to more assaults. On the bright side, the ship is done, short the last training module I don’t care much about. The crew is on +1 for morale. Those precision shots are crucial.

Re: Battletech released - 05/21/18 07:14 PM

Running into some bugs. I have had two very badly timed crashes this week, both right after finishing difficult missions and right after taking my salvage and BAM!, CTD, latest today.

Also my Medusa character now has permanent high spirits, it's been stuck on 0 days left for a week now. Also, have had a couple kill missions where the key mech never appears, but I finish it anyway.
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/21/18 07:31 PM

Can you guys give me a screenshot of a fully-upgraded Argo please?

RK, how do you like to do your precision shots? For mechs I don't care about, I just CT them, for those I want, I do my stability trick. My son likes to take out one leg with a precision shot, then called shots to the other leg.

There's quite a few graphical bugs in the game, most notably how it would seem to hiccup a little bit and my units would teleport to where they're going instead of a smooth move animation. Still playable though. They should do something about the load times though, and would be good to be able to rename saves.

I like doing the story missions as soon as they come up. I think I only did an extra mission twice before going to the story mission. I like to think my presence is needed ASAP, after all, this is a campaign to reclaim Kamea's throne and the time it takes to travel alone is a very long time! I think it should even be longer; doesn't the lore say that jumpships needed a week to recharge their jump drives? And jumpships that can do two jump consecutively were rare? In the game, it only takes a day or two between jumps!

Re: Battletech released - 05/21/18 11:55 PM

I've had 2 BSOD lockups, but I don't know if it's the game or just coincidence.
Sometimes that Argo upgrades screen will stay up and superimpose on the lance launch screen. No big deal, just go to another area and back and it's fine.

I'm the same. I CT anything I don't want, or if I don't have time to work on it much under pressure.
For something I really want, 2 mechs will have LRM's and possibly PPC's. I hit with the LRM's first, those mechs are mainly to knock them over. 2 mechs go to one side, 2 to the other in case I don't have precise shot ready yet, firing from the side is more likely to hit a single leg than from the front/back.
2 take out the left, 2 take out the right.
I don't usually bother with headshots, they just don't seem to come very often for me...unless I'm receiving.

Re: Battletech released - 05/22/18 02:16 AM

no crashes here ( yet? ). 106+ hours so far. load times are pretty slow but tolerable. i was getting some mouse glitching on the weapon list in mechbay once in a while, until i realized it was reading the "mouse roller" on my X-65F HOTAS - a little bit of fiddling and that's gone

biggest glitch i've seen so far is that the mission guy announces reinforcements coming after you have already crushed them. also seems like i'm fighting a TON of Griffins and Thunderbolts, like ALL THE TIME. no big deal i guess, leg them and move on... but a bit more variety would be nice
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 05/22/18 04:00 AM

I get the reinforcements thing too. A lot.
Same on the repetitive mech advesaries. Good for building to sell frequently, but could be more interesting if there was more variety.
I hope we get more stories to play out to extend the campaign once they get the patches out.

Thanks for the pics! It would've been nice to know the full extent of Argo's upgrades so I could've planned better but oh well! RK, why are you not finishing the story yet?

BTW, I usually remove a chunk of my savegames, just relocate them onto a different folder and I did notice my load times got better.

Re: Battletech released - 05/23/18 08:44 PM

The uber unrealistic vehicles like the Shreck dual ppc jeep winkngrin and the demolisher with dual ac 20's have got to go.

The SRM spammer I thought ridiculous enough until I ran into those two. Lame attempt at play balance?

Still, overall, it's a great and very fun diversion.
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/23/18 09:14 PM

I'm not very familiar with the vehicles but yeah, I thought it was weird that the Shreck had three PPCs, I thought it only had two? IIRC, on the TT version tanks did not track heat either frown

Late in the game (well, late for me! smile ), I didn't really get hurt by these tanks. My nemesis was either stupid head hits from LRM5s/SRM4s (really??!??) and pilot injuries from getting knocked over.

Re: Battletech released - 05/23/18 09:59 PM

It's pretty well set up for you to know what to do when, just by the costs involved. The upgrade path just depends on your budget. I concentrated on mech repair and med bay, until I had to pay the big bucks to keep going. Then I worked on morale points a while, then went back when money wasn't a problem.
I filled in the training just to be a completionist. LOL

I'm holding off on what I think is the last mission. I don't know how I'll feel playing the game open ended and I still don't have the assaults I want.

The 2nd to last campaign mission was a PITA! I figured out what to do but didn't have my mech builds right until the 3rd time. Then it went well.
There's a time crunch, a series of target buildings and then a lot of enemies you have to take out. It was pretty satisfying though.

We haven't just been riding around seeing the sights either. Here's my top mech killer, who has spent 90% of his time in a short range brawler:

[Linked Image]

All my other regulars have way over 100 mech kills each.

Those two lower high spirits are permanent, stuck on zero days left. A bug I guess.

I am in summer school now so I won't have that much time like I have had these last couple of weeks. I will likely finish this campaign then put it away for awhile, waiting for stuff to get patched for a re-start of a new one.

Urban Mech??? They gave me a Highlander. smile

They should have, I spent 104 days in the med bays to get it.

edit: What's the best forum for "suggestions" for the devs? Is there a developers forum?

No Ravens that I’ve seen. The urbies were all over the place for a while early in the game, and one of the early planets I visited had one for sale.
It would be nice to see a patch with more mechs and more variety.

Yeah Ice, Behemoth is a she.

Big arm mod, melee gyro and, she punches THRU lots of big mechs.

She has an Orion now, AC 20 ++ and, a SRM +++.

Which reminds me. I don't think I have enjoyed blowing the crap out of enemy targets in a game, of any kind as much as I am enjoying, for example, deciding I have had enough with this "target" and blowing them to little tiny pieces.

The Urby is not great. It's not good. To be honest it's barely useful. I have 2 Large Lasers and 2 Machine Guns on it. It's slow, has no armor, and overheats a lot. Right now I'm just using as punishment for my scrub pilots; if they missed an AC20 shot or Melee attack, then they have to ride the Urby for the next drop. Which is kind of a downward spiral now that i think about it, and they are likely to get injured or killed in it. But that is life in the inner sphere, adapt or die. Will spare no expense to repair it, no matter how much blood needs to be scrubbed from the cockpit.

Urbies need their own environment where they can shine smile I really need to find my old TROs to compare armor and weapons loadout but IIRC Urbies were very useful in city combat. It sounds weird saying this, but I prefer the TT and other game's presentation of the Urbie. This version looks like it's been on a diet! biggrin

6 energy mounts, 2 are arm pods, 1 on each side torso
4 missile mounts, eat arm pod and side torso

Can't remember what I had on there at the time, but now it's got the usual 4 LL and an SRM6 I think, and a lot of armor.

edit: nope, 4LL and 2 ML, lots of heat sinks. Really good with an alpha and precision strike.

Re: Battletech released - 05/27/18 03:55 PM

I had to remove a bunch of saved games this morning. Game had slowed to a crawl and load times were through the roof. I just created a temp subfolder and dragged all but the last few saved game files in the subfolder.

Have to turn of Cloud Saves in Steam otherwise it will just repopulate anything you move out of the folder.

Working fine now. Hopefully something to be patched soon.

Re: Battletech released - 05/27/18 08:39 PM

You guys with all those lasers...

For some reason I am all about PPC's, AC's and LRM's.

Maybe I am doing it wrong??
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: Battletech released - 05/27/18 08:55 PM

I use a lot of LRM's. For assaults I want to keep, if you can just knock them over 3 times you'll have a pristine mech to take after the pilot gets taken out.
PPC's are great early on, and still are, but the heat is pretty rough. I still run some though. I'd say this game is far more balanced for using all weapons than MWO is. I've got some of everything going on.
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/27/18 10:39 PM

I love the PPC even more in this game as it does stability damage as well!

For most of my mechs, I've gotten them to specialize in a certain weapons range so usually I take out the MGs and SLasers and the like. I love sensor-locking a target and then sniping at it from range.

That's the bottom line. The game is a whole bunch of fun. I catch myself just laughing out loud when some heroic OPFOR comes charging at "us". He get's at least 45 LRM's and then, if I don't really care about the salvage, a AC 20 +++ (+20 damage and +20 stab, just got it) and a SRM 6+++ and watch it blow to pieces.

Good laughs. BUT, also good tactics and terrain use can seriously pay off in this game.

At this point in time, I would like to see it changed to a 6 man lance. For me, it would be one scout, 2 LRM fire support, and 2 killers, two long and medium range and one bad ass brawler. Just my opinion so far.

Still wondering how you guys with all those laser beams do in lunar and martian/desert biomes.

edit: right now I am marking time. I am training up my scrubs. Am out looking for the "1 and 1/2 to two skull" missions so I can train them up. On the 1 and 1/2 skull ones I run a scout, 2 LRM support (one of which is a noob in a almost zero armor ShadowHwk with a LRM 15, LRM 10 and LRM 5 with 4 loads of ammo) and, me in a Highlander with a Gauss, AC 5+++ and , a LRM 15++. 3 scrubs and me and, it can get really hairy on some of those 2 skull missions. edit: almost just now lost both my new scrubs. They lived but in med bay for weeks now.

Am pretty much traveling around hunting for rare weapons till I decide to do the next campaign mission. On the 3 skull missions I run my "regulars", all the original guys and me.

We blow em up REAL GOOD!

Re: Battletech released - 05/28/18 01:23 AM

I wish there was an option to put missions, especially the story ones, on a timer. This is one issue I have with some video games. The last I remember was Fallout 3 where I was supposedly looking for my father..... but then I had all the time in the world? No. Same thing for BattleTech -- you're fighting a war and working to take back the throne. Travelling between stars alone takes time; dawdling about simply looses the momentum an army would've built up and allows the opposition to gather their forces.

Of course, just IMO and could be a selectable option instead of mandatory smile

More than ever, I wish there was an ejection animation. Too many dead mechwarriors in this game. frown

Re: Battletech released - 05/28/18 02:19 AM

I'm still at the beginning, leveling up before going to get the Argo. The mechanics seems clear and sound, and the game itself seems to have great potential for growth considering the lore and assets available. The inventory\store screens need some creature comforts, but all in all this is the game I hoped for and it's surprisingly engaging.

An overt timer on missions would be too “gamey.” You succeed, fail, or fail but get some of the job done. I like that. Time is a factor on missions where it makes sense, like the ones to take out an escaping convoy, or to get something done because ______ happens in so many turns.
Posted By: - Ice

Re: Battletech released - 05/28/18 05:07 PM

No, not on missions themselves but on the time you have to get to the mission area (planet/system) or else Lady Arano gets overrun or whatever.

Also did my best to ignore the disconnect with "intercept convoy" missions that you can let the time run for a few days and still do the mission frown
Posted By: Nixer

Re: Battletech released - 05/29/18 03:21 PM

I like the fact you are not stuck to someone elses timeline/pace of game.

I have had way more fun running around the galaxy "combat shopping" than on the story missions;.

Had a fight for my life last night in a silly little 2 1/2 skulls/pumpkin heads mission. I ended up killing at least 10 or 11 mechs and only one was a light, the rest all medium and heavies. No idea why it was so hard but these guys were aggressive! The leader was an "elite mech warrior" in a Grasshopper. I think all my mechs were down to very low armor when done.

Of course! That's why I was suggesting that just as an option rather than being mandatory. I just feel like delaying a story mission breaks the immersion, same as delaying a "intercept the convoy" type missions.

Too fast? I’m over 300 weeks into the game. LOL It wasn’t too fast, I thought it took too long to get the mechs I wanted.
...and I didn’t say it was easy. Some of these missions are relentless. You can’t just stroll in wherever you want, using the map well is as important as what weapons you bring.
Go rushing in on these missions and you may find yourself in the middle of 9 assaults ruining your day.

Finished the campaign yesterday, embarking today as total freelance merc. Very cool. A couple of goodies that were worth it and managed to score an Awesome 8T on the final round which i have been trying to get forever.

Looking forward to whatever harebrained comes up with for add-ons. Open campaign format for steam workshop would be great, as would mission editor. Game seems custom made for a dynamic campaign supporting one or more of the IS houses in a 'moving front line' kind of dynamic war. Here's hoping HBS made a TON of money on this title so they can keep developing it...

One downside - after playing through this game, it really makes me sad what PGI did to the poor Highlander in Mechwarrior Online. It's a total BRUTE in Battletech.
