Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 09/19/02 03:23 AM

Salute! Saludo! Gruß! Salut! Saluto! saudação! from RB3D Recruiting Officers

Come fly the skies of WW1, in Red Baron 3D!
When men were made of steel and planes were made of wood!
Hear your opponent grunt if wounded or scream if you shoot him in the head. Have your wings pop of if you over stress them, black out if too many G's are pulled, deal with gun jams, all the while looking at your opponent from mere feet away. Learn to take advantage of each planes strengths or weaknesses and how to exploit your enemies. Whether you live or die an honorable Salute is given.

Brief history
Red Baron a WW1 flight simulation that has been around since 1992 RB, 1995 RBII, 1998 RB3D.

Today
There are approximately 700 players who play RB3D in over 50 squads? On average you will find 30 to 50 players online at any time of the day or night from all nations and back grounds, as well as 30-40 servers of all descriptions and FM's. You can either join a squad or fly as an independent.

For best graphics it is best to have a voodoo card. Either direct or by using a voodoo 2 with SLI patch through cable. But it works fine in OpenGL or Direct draw, just the graphics are a bit poor until you install the terrain patches.
There are some glide wrappers out there which are being improved each day. This one is about 99% perfected.

Operating System
WinXP Win2K
Does present some problems, its nothing that hasn't been addressed in this document.

Also you may run into some other problems which need to be addressed on an individual basis due to hardware. These are best addressed at the WOV forum everyone will be glad to help you.

They are currently having server trouble.

You can get this one, though.......

It's not as elaborate, but should keep you occupied until WFP is working again.

There are about 2900 schemes in my MP Paint collection .. and really those are just a small part of http://www.flybert.net , the largest and most visited website for Red Baron enhancements and tools.

At least *most* of Promised Land should be out this week , I'm working with Kessler on some last little technical details today.

Check out http://www.swwisa.net , the home organisation of most RB modders.

Hi Kess
Thanks for the pointer. I browsed the site, and it seems to me that the PL UOP is mainly a graphics patch, in that it improves the stock terrain & objects?

I was wondering if there was a "realism patch" (Beery's superpatch is one, I think) that corrects flight models, damage models, inaccuracies in the game etc.

Still very confused...
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 10/22/02 02:27 PM

It all depends on what your looking for. The PL patch cover all buildings/objects, taerrains in all seasons, sky/clouds, FX, sound effects, and so on. Future versions will cover planes/squads, flight models, damage effects, AI, and such.

If you run the current PL you could then run something like the western front patch to add in squads and planes and other neat campaign features. James Heltons Revenge of the Jasta's patch isnt truely compatible with the PL superpatch as he has several old PL graphics and the old PL soundpatch he put in his patch.

You should put a warning beside "Sold Out" as their version of RB3D is hosed. Not even sure they have it available right now. Maybe they're fixing their version.

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 11/11/02 09:51 PM

Thanks Hentzau

I wasn't sure who was selling what.

Here's the excerpt from the Billy Bishop site to upgrade the value line version.

How to UPGRADE the "VALUE LINE" Version of RBII to RB3D.

The next trick is for those of you who may have bought the Red Baron "2" game, and wish to upgrade it with the Super patch to RB3D.
These are the instructions to get your game to work that way.
1) Open the Registry Editor (run 'regedit')
2) Expand 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'
3) Expand 'Software'
4) Expand 'Sierra On-Line'
5) Expand 'Red Baron 2'
6) Create a new key off of Sierra On-Line called 'Red Baron II'
7) Copy, word for word, every string in 'Red Baron 2' into 'Red Baron II'.
There is 'cddir', 'workdir', 'version' and another key named the same as the entry for 'version'.
8) Close the Registry Editor.
9) Run the Super Patch.
Credit for this one is to B. Massey.

Sorry to butt in here...but next time you try to recruit someone for your sim, dont go and friggin spam EVERY damn board on this website with it.

That's totally bad manners. I get enough ads and trash in my inbox every day, I dont want to see RB3D posts in every sim forum on simHQ.

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 12/06/02 09:34 PM

On the other hand, it was because of your posting in the Mig Alley forum that I decided to give RB3D a shot. I loved the original, but was put off by the need for 3dfx/glide support, since I have Nvidia cards. Browsing the sites, it looks like this may not be such a problem anymore. So I ordered the game. I hope the wrapper works!

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 12/17/02 10:18 AM

What I have found to be my favourite setup is as follows.

1) PL complete patch installed as per instructions!!!!!! Please read the mans's instructions and you will have NO problems. Start with a new and clean RB install!!!!

2) Into Simpatch I put the WFP default paints so they replace those provided by PL. (Personal taste) The screen shots of some of those in the upcoming PL Version 2 may make me remove them though

3) Some of Dogsbreath sounds into simpatch. Personal taste. I prefer some of the PL sounds and others from dogsbreath.

4) The version 2 of all CDT's aircraft into simpatch as these have been correctly scaled.
I think the PL V 2 will include these by default so you won't need to install these later.

Remember, whatever you put into Simpatch will be read into memeory for use in the game, rather than any programe files or any mods in the PL VOL files.

You can always take them out or replace if you decide you prefer something else.

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 12/21/02 05:40 PM

This is an exerpt from the Patching primer found on the newbie page. It briefly explains what each folder is used for.

Patch Folders info from patching primer
Simpatch
This is the default directory for patches. Any file put in here will be used ahead of all other files, in both single and multiplayer games. Files in Simpatch are used ahead of the same named file in Shellpat for SP; however, files in Multi will over-ride Simpatch for MMP.

Shellpat
This directory is only used by the single player game, so it is a good choice for e.g. flight and damage models, which will get you ejected from a server in MMP if you have changed them from stock. It is also a good choice for any date based patches, otherwise you will get some weird results in MMP. I had a lot of allies flying Siemens-Schuckerts at one point.

Multi
This directory is only used by the game for MMP. It over-rides Simpatch.

3Dpatch
This directory operates in much the same way as Simpatch, and is mainly used for 3D shapes and terrains. I don't really know why it is there; I use it solely for terrains. Though it works in both SP and MMP, I'm not sure if it over-rides the Shellpat and Multi folders or not.

Read the read me info in any patch this is just a brief explanation of the patching folders and what they do.

Campaign Manager required for some patches like WFP read the read me or FAQ on patches site

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 04/30/03 04:07 AM

Salute!

I would just like to thank those involved in putting together the Hell's Angels HA S-UOP Super Un Official Patch.

http://www.jamrom.com/hellsangels/main.htm

This has to be one of the best UOP's released in recent history IMO.

Since I am a big MMP player I endeavored to find a way to use this great patch in MMP.

Eureka
I found the answer on http://www.flybert.net/ site in the form of MPstockdat http://www.flybert.net/genfiles/MPstockdat.zip to be placed in data/multi

"Avoid the effects of UOP SP enhancements in MMP , which in some cases can getting you "booted" with modified fm , dm or acspecs data files. By placing these stock files in your "Multi" folder , you shouldn't need to uninstall SP UOPs to fly on secure servers."

Thank-You one and all, SWWisa and Flybert for the tip. Great UOP.

What's the deal with the Sold Out software version of RB3D? I loved RB2 when I reviewed it for a local magazine, might pick this up since it's really cheap...

But does it work?

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 05/11/04 06:01 PM

There are problems with installing the Sold Out version under Win XP. Possible solutions are explained here:-

http://www.jamrom.com/hellsangels/redbaron.htm

I picked up a cheap boxed version of RBII on Ebay and used the patch to upgrade to 3D.

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 05/13/04 05:56 PM

I use WFP installed over FCJ.

I use MissionGen to massage missions. I also use CM11's ability to set campaign dates to move through periods of relative inactivity more quickly while staying in periods of intense air activity longer. This makes my scoring pattern conform to historical aces.
Posted By: Birdbrain

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 05/13/04 09:34 PM

Western Front Patch.
Rens' reduced PL terrain.
Greybeard's WFP FM with Zinteck's DM.
Steve's WFP gunsounds.
Other sounds, (engines, wind), that I took from HA.
Tom's Campaign Manager.

I also have a Hell's Angels patch install with the same terrain, Greybeard's FM for stock RB planes.

I use the dgVoodoo Glide wrapper in my Windows folder for all installs.
Posted By: LE Heureux

Re: Red BAron 3D Newbie Info - 05/13/04 10:05 PM

I use only the PL super patch (the one that predated FCJ) for terrain & objects plus Rens aircraft only .vol file, but I mostly fly MMP.

For SP I either use the FCJ or Hell's Angels or Western Front superpatches, each of which is stand-alone and complete. I sometimes add different aircraft sounds, which I culled from several patches. That's strictly personal preference, though and require use of CM11 (as does the date based WFP).

Do you have to fly only for the Germans only or can you fly for the Allies as well?

Miami Eagle,

Read the thread that Dutch quotes above. According to that thread, and one of the blokes there is an original Red Baron guru, it looks like the real deal, but a lot of the information in the spiel on the advertising page is inaccurate. (The BOX in the picture of the game IS the box from the original Red Baron 3D game, but the written information appears odd.

NOTE: the thread Dutch quotes refers to the following URL: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/red_baron_pack, and that is where I would be spending my money. I would be more reluctant to buy from the site YOU mention because of the way the advertising on that site is written. (For example, the REAL Red BAron game supports 64 or 128 players (or something of that order) on Massive Multiplayer.) It might not be the real deal or it could be a rip off. Also it could be the ARCADE version of Red Baron which came out a couple of years ago. Also, the Gog site is mentioned by people on this forum who REALLY know their stuff - ArgonV, and other.

Once you have Red Baron3D (or RBII) all patched up as described at the beginning of this thread, it is most definitely NOT an arcade sim.

I still fly it and love it after 10 years.

Regards,
George.

All this variety of Superpacks is kind of confusing. Could you please advise: what's my best choise for the most immersive offline campaign play with the best visuals possible? FCJ, HASP, WFP or something else?

IMO, because they are both free, HASP is good for SP and has files to stay MP compatable

WFP is a bit harder to set up, but is an expanded game with nearly 3x the plane types, it is for all intents FCJ2 with FCJ aircraft paints and the same (but many more) plane models than FCJ

WFP is definitely the best offline experience

for terrains in Glide Mode ( with an emulator or not, I use dgVoodoo beta 1.5 ) and better object textures, I recommend the "PL2 terrain and PL objects combination set" from

Just a note: The Western Front patch requires cm patcher which will not run in 64-bit. I was bummed I couldn't get it running.

Yeah, CM11 does not work w/ 64bit,.

Reload by Laser does have a date switching ability, though I have never used it, and it includes a number of very cool enhancements for SP RB3D: http://gabi-laser.blogspot.com/2011/03/red-baron-3d-utilities.html
