Anyone remember Dawn Patrol??

Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 05/31/10 02:32 PM

It was how my career in IT got started actually. One simple comuter game. I played it for hours on end. But that was Windows 95 then, and there was a lot of behind the scenes configuration that needed to be done, and fortunatley I knew a computer geek that was able to come over and get it done. Although I really don't remember (or understood) what he did. And now, 12-13 years and 5 operating systems later, all I can do is look at box.

I've heard that it's possible to get some old games to run on XP with some DOS emulators, like DOSbox, but I just don't have the expertise on the commands needed. I know that sounds funny coming from someone in the IT field, but when I got into it, using DOS was not part of schools curriculum that I went to. In fact the O/S of choice at the time was NT. Does anyone out there have any knowledge on the subject?? It would be appreciated.

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 05/31/10 02:58 PM

Hello,

DOS is a fairly simple command-line interface. In fact, modern versions lack the more powerful (and useful tools).

1.
A folder is called a directory

2.
One generally types a command followed by a name:
cd x = change directory to "x"
cd.. = go up a directory
dir = show the contents of directory
dir /p = show the contents of the directory and pause if the contents fill more than one screen
copy *.* x = copy all files in current directory to "x"
copy alphabet.* x = copy all files named "alphabet", regarless of type to "x"
copy *.a = copy all files ending in "a" regardless of type to "x"
md "x" = create directory "x"
rd "x" = remove directory "x"
del *.* = identical to copy except it deletes everything in the directory
del alphabat.a = identical to copy except it deletes only "alphabet.a"
dawnpatrol = run dawnpatrol.exe

There are a few more - but that should be enough to get you started.

3.
For DOSBox one needs to create virtual computer. If you read the help files it will give you the commands. Basically there are three steps:
I. Mount a directory as a drive - the command is something like:
Mount C C:\dosgames\
II. mount a cdrom drive if need be (simply copy the text in the help - the command is too long too remember)
III. Type the standard cd C:\ command to change directory to the new (fake) C:\ (which is really C:\dosgames in our example) and then select the game directory and run the program as if you were in dos.
IV. It is usually best to pick one setup and stay with it - including installing the games while already in Dosbox. This can avoid problems, and if you know batch, you can write a little program to automatically set things up. Dosbox also has commands that allow you to adjust the speed that games can access the CPU and RAM (to keep the games from running too fast).

DOSbox also exists for Linux and it is in this configuration that I've gotten a lot of games to run that I hadn't managed to since the 1990s.

Good luck

Major,

I use Dosbox; you might want to try D-fend which uses a GUI.

DOSbox is an awsome tool to play the old games. Free and uber-easy to install, learn, and use, even for non-IT fellows, like me! wink

edit: Oh, and, yes, I do remember Dawn Patrol - great fun! smile Aweseom Errol Flynn movie, tool! beercheers

Or . . .
You can find a P1 at Goodwill or rummage for $20 or less.
I took a hard drive from my old 486 box, that hadn't run in 10 years, and put it in; it started and ran stuff I hadn't seen in ten years. I've loaded up the old Rowan sims, and Wings of Glory, SWotL, Dynamix stuff--worth every penny.

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 12/17/10 12:48 AM

I had DP but Rowan's Flying Corps was much better and I still have my CDR copy they sent me for doing a bit of beta testing when they converted it from 2D graphics engine to D3D. I can get that running but don't have DP anymore to try it.

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 02/17/11 01:52 AM

Dawn Patrol was amongst my first WW1 flight "sims" ever too, I can`t remember if I ran that or RB1 first.

I still own the very first PC I ever had, with DP and RB1 on it.

But I prefer to play it on Dosbox w/D-Fend.
Remember to install the game WITH dosbox (Or, practically D-Fend) and install as VGA res, and not SVGA or you`ll end up with the usual error when starting the game, however if anyone knows how to get the game running with SVGA please do say so, I havent played DP w/SVGA textures in YEARS smile

Set up with Sound Blaster for sound, preferably 16 or the likes.

I sort of missed out on Flying Corps, also it is very hard to get running whether it be dos box w/d-fend or W7, RB2 was pretty good though smile

I've gotten Dawn Patrol to run in SVGA res before via DOSBox, but it has been a while and I forgot what vid card options I used. frown

Do mean the one with that book, from which you choose your missions? Yep, I remember that - not a bad little game, but I preferred Knight of the Sky. When is someone going to do a Knights of the Sky II?

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 03/24/11 02:53 AM

I wouldn't hold my breath sir. PC games aren't as popular as they once were due to the console invasion. Of the PC games that are produced, flight simulation makes up a very small percentage because of how complex it is to program these things to behave realistically. Not just the AI but each planes individual flight model.

So these days your choices are (in alphabetical order)

First Eagles 2 - by Third Wire
http://www.thirdwire.com/project_fe2.htm

Over Flanders Fields: Between Heaven & Hell - By OBD software
http://www.overflandersfields.com/info.htm

Rise of Flight - by 777 studios
http://riseofflight.com/en

I can't say I've tried First Eagles 2, however I own and regularly fly the other two. Both have some amazingly good aspects to them and are well supported by dedicated Devs.

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 03/24/11 04:31 PM

Never mind - after reading up on RoF's forthcoming singleplayer campaign, it sounds very much like it has got all the content of KoTS and a whole lot more as well. £30's a bit steep for a game that's a couple of years old though, don't you think? Games have usually come down by then - unless they've been selling spectacularly well. I'll track it for a bit and see if it comes down. Shame it isn't on Steam - games that are around two years old often appear in midweek SuperDeals - such as when I picked up Napoleon Total War for £5! And Mafia II for the same price.
Posted By: ArgonV

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 03/24/11 05:39 PM

I would not worry about the price at this point, for what you get is more now than what it was 2 years ago. There have been pretty significant improvements to the engine, as well as new aircraft.
Posted By: Hellshade

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 03/24/11 06:29 PM

If the price is a concern, it should be noted that additional planes above the 9 included are going to cost $7.62 each to be able to fly them. Bombers are $14.99 to be able to fly. Try the demo. If you love it, you may find it worth the money. If not, considered one of the other two fine WWI sims out there.

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 03/25/11 12:20 AM

Stuffy, you can't think of RoF as being two years old. You can't think of it in the same way as Mafia2. Mafia2 and games such as that, are two years old, and they're over. Done. RoF is an ongoing thing. What the game was two years ago, is not what it is now. And isn't now, what it will be two years from now. It's changing with every new version. New planes, new effects, terrain changes, clouds, gameplay.
A lot of the people who didn't like Rise Of Flight when it came out are coming back and changing their minds. Me...I liked it from day one.
So, it's not two years old. It's still new.

I'm running Dawn Patrol in SVGA and it runs pretty smooth.
Here is what you need to do:

I have made a DOSBox conf file for Dawn Patrol:
Quote:
# This is the configurationfile for DOSBox 0.74. (Please use the latest version of DOSBox)
# Lines starting with a # are commentlines and are ignored by DOSBox.
# They are used to (briefly) document the effect of each option.

[sdl]
# fullscreen: Start dosbox directly in fullscreen. (Press ALT-Enter to go back)
# fulldouble: Use double buffering in fullscreen. It can reduce screen flickering, but it can also result in a slow DOSBox.
# fullresolution: What resolution to use for fullscreen: original or fixed size (e.g. 1024x768).
# Using your monitor's native resolution with aspect=true might give the best results.
# If you end up with small window on a large screen, try an output different from surface.
# windowresolution: Scale the window to this size IF the output device supports hardware scaling.
# (output=surface does not!)
# output: What video system to use for output.
# Possible values: surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw.
# autolock: Mouse will automatically lock, if you click on the screen. (Press CTRL-F10 to unlock)
# sensitivity: Mouse sensitivity.
# waitonerror: Wait before closing the console if dosbox has an error.
# priority: Priority levels for dosbox. Second entry behind the comma is for when dosbox is not focused/minimized.
# pause is only valid for the second entry.
# Possible values: lowest, lower, normal, higher, highest, pause.
# mapperfile: File used to load/save the key/event mappings from. Resetmapper only works with the defaul value.
# usescancodes: Avoid usage of symkeys, might not work on all operating systems.

fullscreen=true
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=original
output=surface
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper-0.74.map
usescancodes=true

[dosbox]
# language: Select another language file.
# machine: The type of machine tries to emulate.
# Possible values: hercules, cga, tandy, pcjr, ega, vgaonly, svga_s3, svga_et3000, svga_et4000, svga_paradise, vesa_nolfb, vesa_oldvbe.
# captures: Directory where things like wave, midi, screenshot get captured.
# memsize: Amount of memory DOSBox has in megabytes.
# This value is best left at its default to avoid problems with some games,
# though few games might require a higher value.
# There is generally no speed advantage when raising this value.

language=
machine=svga_s3
captures=capture
memsize=16

[render]
# frameskip: How many frames DOSBox skips before drawing one.
# aspect: Do aspect correction, if your output method doesn't support scaling this can slow things down!.
# scaler: Scaler used to enlarge/enhance low resolution modes.
# If 'forced' is appended, then the scaler will be used even if the result might not be desired.
# Possible values: none, normal2x, normal3x, advmame2x, advmame3x, advinterp2x, advinterp3x, hq2x, hq3x, 2xsai, super2xsai, supereagle, tv2x, tv3x, rgb2x, rgb3x, scan2x, scan3x.

[cpu]
# core: CPU Core used in emulation. auto will switch to dynamic if available and appropriate.
# Possible values: auto, dynamic, normal, simple.
# cputype: CPU Type used in emulation. auto is the fastest choice.
# Possible values: auto, 386, 386_slow, 486_slow, pentium_slow, 386_prefetch.
# cycles: Amount of instructions DOSBox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this value too high results in sound dropouts and lags.
# Cycles can be set in 3 ways:
# 'auto' tries to guess what a game needs.
# It usually works, but can fail for certain games.
# 'fixed #number' will set a fixed amount of cycles. This is what you usually need if 'auto' fails.
# (Example: fixed 4000).
# 'max' will allocate as much cycles as your computer is able to handle.
#
# Possible values: auto, fixed, max.
# cycleup: Amount of cycles to decrease/increase with keycombo.(CTRL-F11/CTRL-F12)
# cycledown: Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.

cycles=max
cycleup=10
cycledown=20

# Possible values: 44100, 48000, 32000, 22050, 16000, 11025, 8000, 49716.
# blocksize: Mixer block size, larger blocks might help sound stuttering but sound will also be more lagged.
# Possible values: 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 512, 256.
# prebuffer: How many milliseconds of data to keep on top of the blocksize.

Then from the DOS prompt run PATROL ? and select SVGA ON THE GROUND AND IN THE AIR.

Have fun running Dawn Patrol in SVGA. smile

This might also work with other old Rowan sims like Air Power and Navy Strike, since they are based on the same game engine, but I haven't tested this myself.
By the way, does anyone know how to run Flying Corps Gold on Windows XP or Vista (64 bit)?

I don't quite understand this whole , old game, retro, thing. With something as good as ROF out there, why would anyone want to play a ten year old game? I still can't see why people are playing EAW. Even with mods it looks like ass. Falcon 4.O with the new 4.32 BMS mod is the only old game (sim) I still play. But, what they've done is amazing.
I'm all for the new stuff. Forget the past guys, move forward, men!

I've got the new stuff, but every now and then I like to fire up the old school.

P.S. I had FCG running in Win XP in software rendering... But it was unstable. I haven't tried it in Win 7.

The new stuff may have all the shiny graphics and huge numbers of buttons to push....but the old stuff often had real gameplay that is sadly missing in the new (russian) stuff.
I've nothing at all against the russians or flying Migs, its just that playing their games is a little too like playing chess (a favourite russian pastime I believe).

RoF is brilliant, but I only ever play one mission over and over. FCG I remember being sucked in and needing to progress.
And going to work next day and telling people about it.

Oh I know. Some of the old ones were great. I was a Janes WW2 Fighters fan. Fanatic, really. One of my favorites of all time. But, that was then. I remember spending a lot of tme on these old games trying to get them to look better. Terrain mods, skins...etc.
Was up to the wee hours of the night playing Warbirds, too. Was hooked, badly.
But they look too dated, now. Graphics aren't everything, but it is part of the experience. I couldn't look at those old games anymore and get as immersed as I used to.

Ursus' FCG help site is still up. Should get your FCG up and running on a WinXp machine.

http://web.comhem.se/carlberg/fcg/help/help.htm

Can you all please report back on how FCG is running for you because following re-installing my WinXp sometime ago, my FCG will play just fine for about 15ish minutes then freeze. I can get back to my desktop with alt-tab and close FCG manually, but because of the way wow exec is designed I have to reboot my PC to be able to run FCG again. Before my OS reinstall FCG was running fine with no problems. I completely re-installed FCG; but it will still do the "freeze". A work-around is to close after a bit of flying then restart it; but that's no good for the great campaigns and long patrol missions. I suspect its due to poor memory handling; just not sure.

I'm surprised you got it to work at all, with me it wouldn't even start.
The only thing I can think of that might work is to use some kind of virtualization, like VirtualPC or VMware.
Probably can't use 3D acceleration then, if it will even work at all.
Posted By: RedVonHammer

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 12/18/11 11:43 AM

FCG`ll probably work with VirtualBox, basically it`s like dosbox and d-fend in that you set up a profile with the kind of hardware, i.e you give it a 12mb graphics card, 2gb harddrive etc. Then you actually install Windows 98, or MS-DOS 6.22 or Win 3.1 or whatever you want on it. You start the program, then you start a virtual computer inside the program then install whatever O/S or GUI you want, then drivers and directx and what not, then you got your own virtual computer!
I had a bunch of games not working in D-Fend that I got working in VirtualBox minus a weird problem with the mouse cursor flickering in-game.

My thought is that a lot of us are suffering from the old school syndrome now and then, I mean.. You would have to be pretty stoneage (In terms of computer and game/sim technology development) not to know of RoF and OFF and still be a SimHQ member, this thread is about DP and thats what we`re discussing with nostalgia in mind, in spite of playing RoF and OFF smile

Re: Anyone remember Dawn Patrol?? - 12/18/11 06:54 PM

For what it's worth, I've "flown" FCG in XP_32, XP_64 and W7_64; never had ME or Vista. Try here:

http://www.wingsofhonour.com/flyingcorps/tipsandtricks/html_woh_flyingcorps_tipsandtricks.en.html

The sequence was:
1) Full install, do not run;
2) Update with proper patch;
3) Get the updated Smacker.dll file
4) Then set compatibility mode.

I've pretty much stopped "flying" anything that doesn't support TIR or at least have "mouse look" for TIR 2dof.

I've had success with installing FCG on XP using this method:

Set FLY/WINSTSTB.EXE to 95 Compatibility mode
Apply all checkmarks except the last on the compatibility tab
Double-clcik the file to install
Apply update
Apply smacker32 from Mig Alley, or from a download from the net

I played all of them, Knights of the Sky and SWOTL were my favorites. SWOTL was the only sim where the Axis could actually win the War (based on your mission success rate).
Makes me want to get an old 486 PC and play them again. I still have RB1, not sure about SWOTL, but how would you get old titles like these again?

You don't need an old PC, just DOSBox! I've got it running just fine on my Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine.

DosBox is fab!
Gives the opportunity to play all these old
flightsims now and then!
From Ace to Birds of Prey and Strike Eagle!
