Janes Fleet Defender - 12/03/11 04:24 AM

Having starting to use D-fend reloaded for older DOS games, is Fleet Defender an abandonware product yet or only available via Ebay/Amazon? Also, anyone know of any posted discussions about a post XP playability? I really liked this title when it was released and only abandoned it when it's graphics became dated and support began to wane.

Hi Matt. I tried running Fleet Defender Gold last year but never could get the sound to work. I was also using D-Fend reloaded. IIRC no one has been able to find the solution to the sound problem. I might be wrong though. I've heard wonderful things about this Sim. I wish I could play it myself. I was running XP so I don't know what the deal is with the newer OS. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Did you purchase your version or is it available as abandonware, like the TF1942 title? I am sort of hoping it's available as abandonware so I can see if it's playable or not in Windows 7. Thanks Pescador, knowing if I do find it, sound may be a challenge.

No problem Matt. I just checked my hard-drive and its Fleet Defender NOT Fleet Defender Gold. Its the 5.6 Meg abandonware download. Sorry about that. I remember seeing Fleet Defender Gold for sale at Amazon for not too much if I remember correctly. Maybe the Gold version would be easier to get working on Windows 7. Don't know though. Yup, sound would probably be your major obstacle. Keep us posted if you can. Lots of Simmers would love to get that baby going also. That's for sure.

BTW are you stationed at Ft. Lewis? I always wanted to be stationed there but never did. Beautiful country the Pacific Northwest is. My family and I got to visit Seattle a couple of years ago and fell in love with the place. Don't they have a Ranger Battalion Hq'ed there?

Hey Matt. Amazon still has Fleet Defender Gold (cd version) for sale. $16.00 plus 4.00 shipping. Don't know if you want to spend 20 bucks for something that might not work, but I thought I'd let you know anyway.

I am stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, formerly Fort Lewis again. It's my second time here and is indeed a great station to be at. We do have 2nd Battalion of the 75th Rangers here, along with 1st SFG, TF160 (SF Aviation) and three of the army's Stryker Brigades. It's a busy place to say the least, but fantastic because we have two different training climates available, dense mountainous rainforest and arid high desert.

I didn't know Fleet Defender was available as abandonware. It would be a great start before spending money on something that won't work properly. Do you know the link where you found it?

Wow I didn't know the Special Forces were there also. Interesting. I was stationed at Bragg for most of my tour however during my first Enlistment I was at Ft. Ord, Panama Canal Zone, Ft McClennan, Benning and of course Bragg. Thank you for your service Matt. Fleet Defender is a small file Matt so I wonder if I could email to you as an attachment? Its approximately 6 MB in size. Let me know what you think. PM your email address if interested. Its a clean file so no virus or malware to worry about.

Re: Janes Fleet Defender - 12/04/11 02:41 AM

Spent half of my first enlistment in Panama and Honduras (Palmerola). I loved central America as an infantry guy!

I did find Fleet Defender on one of the abandonware sites. I've installed it into D-Fend, but now have the missing mouse, EMM and EMS messages to resolve now. Man, I forgot how much a pain in the arse the old DOS games were. Now, we #%&*$# about DRM, but hey, everything mostly boots right up now.

Thanks for the offer Pescador, much appreciated. Also, thank you too for your service. Just hit my 20 years, so time to think about what i want to do when I grow up now, a bit daunting.

No problem Matt. Good to hear from another Vet that's been to Panama. Stay safe and congrats on your 20 years. It takes a very special person to do 20 years.

Re: Janes Fleet Defender - 12/06/11 01:49 AM

Bought FD when it first came out and got FD Gold soon after. I still fly it occasionally under DOSBOX on Wxp. Best F14 sim ever made with great A/B modeled cockpit. Great campaigns also!

If anyone still flying this sim is looking for additional missions, I have Bosnia, Iraq, Vietnam, etc. 60+ total I would be glad to send.

Also have the Player's Guide to Fleet Defender by Robin G. Kim and the F14DECOD utility which lets you open all campaign missions and save them as single missions in the mission builder. Great utility! I used it to help me re-do the three North Cape campaigns in Janes F18.

Email me at: lee61156@aol.com and tell me which of these items you want me to send.

Please don't post a request on this thread. I will only respond to an email.

Major Dragon. How were you able to fix the sound problem using DosBox? I also run XP but was unable to run FD correctly with the sound being the major issue. Do you think FD Gold would be easier to run than the regular FD on XP SP2 Home Edition? Thanks for chiming in. I really appreciate it. I might have to give FD another try using DosBox.

Re: Janes Fleet Defender - 12/06/11 02:36 AM

I have my FD game sound configured for SB Pro Later address 220, IRQ 7 DMA 1

My DOSBOX is configured as follows:

sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=7
dma=1
hdma=5
sbmixer=true
oplmode=auto
oplemu=default
oplrate=22050

Works fine.
